001. New Beginnings
For the last two, nearly three years, this is what my life has been about.
I dated the same boy from age 16 through 20. Through the reading of much needed self-help books, and a nasty 3rd degree sunburn which he helped cause, I finally decided to wise up and leave him. I will not lie and say that it was easy. It was actually difficult at first. We shared a bed for the last eight months, had gone to school together since eighth grade. He made up over a fifth of my life at that point. That's a huge number at age 20. Yet, that has little to do with deciding to be with someone if that someone makes you feel miserable. We broke it off, and it was very mature and amicable. (It did not stay that way on his end, but that's a completely different topic.) During that four years we were together, we'd had a friend we all called Penguin. (I had liked him since seventh grade, but he seemed not to really even notice me until ninth grade or so.) I became really great friends with Penguin through German class and eventually eating lunch at school together nearly every day. He was weird, and funny, and cute, and let me put glitter glue and heart tattoos on him. My own boyfriend wouldn't let me. I was even more hooked than I had been before. Little did I know, he had developed an enormous crush on me over the two year period between ninth and eleventh grade. So, during my and my ex-boyfriend's rocky relationship, he and I remained friends. He would listen to me when I spoke, and vice versa. We laughed together, and could be silly. Eventually we began emailing one another. When my relationship had ended, I realized I could finally go after the person I'd wanted to be with for so long, whom I had originally thought was not even remotely interested. On July 18, 2011, we had what we call our Zeroeth Date. After my boyfriend and I had broken up, my friend we called Penguin took me on a library date to use his library card and get myself some books to keep busy. On July 22, 2011, he picked me up and we went to a park and it was our first date.
After that, we continued on our path of moving fast. (Which, honestly, was not fast enough for us. We hated wasted too many years not telling the other how we felt.) He moved in with me at my parents house in February 2012. We got engaged January 22, 2013, and married July 22, 2013. Right before the marriage, we moved into our first apartment on July 13, 2013. We both got new jobs back in 2011 and 2012. In June 2013, we left the apartment and moved into a quadruplex, which is huge. We just celebrated our one year anniversary in July. Now, we come to the point in our lives where I'm about to turn 23, and he's not far behind. We both want to have children. He's trying to get a better job. We're looking into buying a house. Less than three years together, and all this has happened. I love all these new beginnings. Let's hope 2014 keeps 'em coming.
