After her physical therapy appointment, Tallulah stopped by the diner near DCU. It was a total whim - nothing could make you crave pancakes more than two hours with a therapist who resembled an animated Barbie doll in a lab coat and was far too enthusiastic about hand weights, and she had time, so what the hell.

Slipping off her coat, Tallulah started to slide onto a seat at the counter. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a familiar brunette sitting at a booth. Tallulah slid back off the chair and picked up her coat. "Erika?" she called, crossing the diner. "Hey," she said, pointing to the bench opposite the girl. "Can I sit? I didn't know you were back in town. When did you get here?"

"I've been back since a bit before Thanksgiving," she added, while she waited for Erica to make up her mind as to whether she could sit or not. "I guess we've got a lot to catch up on, huh?"

The one small light about being back in Destiny City, back at St. Mag's and the life she thought she'd left behind was that now Erika was sixteen. Sixteen was old enough to work. She might not be able to drop out and work full-time (Shepherd wouldn't be happy with her if she did!), but she could at least look into part-time employment.

That's what she was doing here now. Loathe to part with very much of her hard-earned and meager funds - especially on something that wouldn't last, she sat in a booth with a glass of orange juice and an application, poring over the requirements for working here. Would it be worth it? There would be a lot of people coming in if she worked at a place like this...

Erika was startled at being addressed, and it showed as her grip on the pen she had been holding loosened and her eyes widened. She hadn't expected to be spoken to, let alone from someone she didn't even know was in town!

"Tallulah?" The name was framed as a question, but the gray-eyed girl waved to the bench on the other side of the booth. "Sure, you can sit." She grabbed her orange juice and sipped it slowly, trying to make it last as long as she could, before adding, "I got back last week. Still unpacking."

Frowning at her application, the brunette wondered idly what kind of experience a diner could want, not that she had any to offer in the first place. "We do - I didn't know you were here, either; I knew you were getting better, but coming back to Destiny City's new." She probably should have known Tallulah was coming back, but when Shepherd lost his job she'd stopped checking in.

Tallulah slid into the booth, setting her coat on the seat beside her. "Well, my dad would have liked it if they'd kept me a few more months," she shrugged, "But I'm out of the woods, so I rallied to be sent home. I'm far enough behind on school as it is." If she really hustled with winter classes, she could make up a semester - and with her senshi activities on hold for the time being, she had plenty of time to study.

"Back to Saint Mags? Or somewhere else?" she asked, pulling a menu out from behind the napkin dispenser. She'd been craving pancakes, but thought it might be awkward to sit here and eat a whole meal when Erika was only having juice. Should she offer to get something for Erika as well? Or would that be more awkward? She decided to go for it.

"I just, um, I just came from physical therapy and I'm starving. Do you want anything?" she offered, smiling at Erika. She'd always meant to be more hands-on helping Sailor Callisto and her civilian counterpart, but time got in the way. "I'll treat. It's good to see you."

Erika smiled tightly as she met Tallulah's gaze, then turned back to her application. She'd never filled out one of these before - could she list all the times she'd helped out at Saint Mag''s as experience? No? How was she supposed to get experience without a job? No wonder Shep had such a hard time. "At least you're getting better," she said, glancing up again at the older girl. "You were really sick... it must have scared him." If she'd been that sick, it would have scared Shepherd, after all.

"Yeah, Saint Mag's," the younger girl added, making a face. "Home sweet home, I suppose. At least I know how everything's supposed to work there." Which made it a lot less frightening than an entirely new place, with new people and new rules and so many ways she could mess up and get hurt for it...

Treat? Erm... Well, she was pretty hungry, and Tallulah was a friend, but. Why treat her when they hadn't seen each other in so long? And was she wanting to treat her because it was good to see her, or was it good to see her because she could buy her food? Or--- If she turned her down would that be worse? She probably just didn't want to eat in front of her, or something.

In that case, she... probably should accept, at least a little.

"You don't have to, but if you have to I guess... toast would be okay?" Erika suggested, naming the cheapest, simplest thing she could think of.

Well, Tallulah couldn't blame Erika for being less than thrilled to return to Saint Mag's. It was, after all, a reformatory school, and Erika didn't need any reforming. Plus, the whole brother issue, which didn't really need any narrative rehashing because all parties present understood it well enough, so moving on. "Just toast?" she asked with a frown. "I mean, I don't mind you getting actual food..."

Perhaps it was best not to push Erika, she decided, and ordered pancakes for herself and toast for the other girl when the waitress came around. "If you decide you want something else, let me know," she offered, and that was the last she was going to say on the topic, for better or for worse.

Dropping her voice, she changed the subject to more serious matters. "I guess I should just put it out there that I'm nowhere near strong enough to get back to patrolling," she said quietly, hoping that between her reduced tone and their distance from other diners, they wouldn't be overheard. "I've been in touch with a few people, but mostly I'm just trying to keep a low profile so no one accuses me of slacking off."

As if anyone who knew how sick she'd been would do that! But Tallulah didn't want to risk it. She was willing to guess that if Erika was still unpacking, she probably hadn't had a chance to henshin up yet. "If you want someone more experienced to go with you - when you're ready, of course - I could give you a few phone numbers to try." Which, she hoped, was not pushing too hard. Callisto had never been the most willing senshi, but Tallulah hoped she wasn't making Erika wish she'd never come back to Destiny City with this line of inquiry.

"Toast is enough," Erika said, refusing to budge on the idea of getting more. She didn't want to owe Tallulah any more than she already would for the toast! At least not until she had a job that would help her pay for it. She didn't want to tell Tallulah that she was genuinely considering dropping out so that she could work full time (except Shep wouldn't hear of it, for some reason.), so she smiled at her friend instead.

And then winced. "...Patrolling. Right." Back to Destiny City, back to being a Senshi. "And you really shouldn't if you're still getting better." Senshi or not, Tallulah had been so sick! "You should take time to get your strength up before you do anything... like that," she said, fidgeting as she wondered about the real point the older girl was making.

...There it was. "I hadn't thought too much about it yet," she admitted slowly. "I don't even know what's been happening here." Gray eyes sought Tallulah's, and Erika clutched her pen in her hand so tightly that her knuckles turned white. "For all I know, everyone's gone..."

Tallulah suspected she knew what sort of rationale was behind Erika turning down her offer of more food, but she wasn't going to argue and make things more awkward. Moving forward, she could see she needed to reassure the uncertain younger senshi that the team hadn't completely dissolved in their absence.

"No," said Tallulah reassuringly. "Everyone's not gone. I mean, I don't know what's going on any better than you do." She'd been trying to keep her head low, dating a civilian and playing at being a civilian, because knowing the state of things would only make her want to get back in the game too quickly. And if she was almost passing out after swimming a few laps too many, then she definitely wasn't ready to patrol.

"But people are still in town. Ganymede - and I assume Valhalla, they're kind of a matched set. I think Babylon just got back, and Pasiphae, I think... and there was another knight..." She didn't really know the status on everyone else - part of keeping her nose down meant that she couldn't exactly get a full report on the Jovians.

"If you want, I'll give you Paris's cell number. She's got a better idea of what's going on," Tallulah said, reaching into her bag preemptively for a notepad. Quietly, she continued, "Ganymede, I mean. She's pretty much as experienced as I am at this point. More, probably, because she hasn't taken a year and a half off."

So people were still around, that was... good. Well, of course it was good, it meant that the worst hadn't occurred (yet) and so far, everything was okay. Ish. That just meant that worse was coming up, still, but for now... for now, maybe she could live with the waiting for it. After all, at least she hadn't lost the few people she'd known - maybe she could find Tomlin again?

She hoped the guardian cat was okay... Tallulah hadn't mentioned him. Frowning, she puzzled over the application for another few moments before setting it aside for now. This might not be the best place for her to work at, anyway.

"I'm glad they're okay," she said at last. "But... I wasn't very good before, and now I've had a year away. I don't really think I could be much help." Nor was she overly interested in trying again, honestly - she had more important things to worry about, like staying safe and out of trouble. Neither of those things went along with being a senshi, and she knew it.

But then again, it wasn't like she could really get out of it either. Not in this city - oh, she could try, and she was considering it - but, knowing her luck, something would happen to throw her back into the fray regardless, so she might as well accept it now and try to be a little more prepared for the inevitable.

Tallulah shrugged, not exactly trying to be dismissive of Erika's concerns, but at least trying to downplay them. "We all start somewhere," she said, "And plenty of us started without the kind of support system you have." Which, she realized, sounded like she was trying to guilt the younger girl into patrolling again - and maybe she was.

Anyway, she could drop the senshi talk for as long as it took for the waitress to come by and drop off their orders. Tallulah drizzled syrup onto her pancakes, considering. She didn't want Erika to come out of this conversation feeling overly pressured, or worse, hating her... she just wanted to give the younger girl what she considered a much-needed boost of confidence!

Smiling as she smoothed a napkin over her lap, Tallulah said, "The only way that any of us ever got to be any good was by practicing. Me and Ganymede and every other eternal scout - we all started out uncertain and untrained, same as you. And then we kept at it and kept at it until we got better."

She was sure that Erika would have some kind of counter to that, but at least she had tried. And, like punctuation on the statement, Tallulah popped a slice of pancake thoughtfully into her mouth.

Senshi. Patrolling. Erika had been going to apply for a proper part-time job, one that paid and would let her take care of herself like she wanted. She had been going to get that much closer to true independence, to not having to rely on anyone else or ask anyone for their help - but if she had to go back to patrolling, then she wouldn't necessarily have the time or energy to manage what amounted to two jobs.

But at the same time, she couldn't just... pretend it never happened. Not without feeling the guilt of knowing that she could have done something to help, and didn't.

"Give me some time to think about it?" 'Please?' It wasn't that she would - or could - say no, but the gray-eyed girl needed a few days to come to terms with what she was going to be doing again. To come to terms with going to war.

When the food arrived, she thanked the waitress and buttered her toast, taking a small bite of it and chewing thoughtfully as she contemplated how best to talk to Tallulah. She swallowed and put the toast back down before returning her attention to the older girl.

"It's not something I've thought about much, yet. I... I understand what your'e saying, but I... I need a little time. Not much! But a little."

Tallulah understood needing time - she was, herself, taking a rather long while to recuperate and get back into the swing of things. And while Erika hadn't been ill, a war was a rather lot to mentally prepare for, not something you just jumped into feet first. (Which was probably why so many rookie senshi seemed so shell-shocked, she reflected. The cats didn't exactly give you much preparation before you had to go fight for your life.)

"Of course," she said finally. "It's a lot to take in all at once."

"You've still got my cell number, right?" she asked, cutting up more of her pancakes. It didn't seem very logical to her, now that she really considered it, to give Erika Paris's number without making sure the younger girl also had hers. Short-sighted, was what that would be.

"Take as long as you need, and if you ever need anything - even if it's got nothing to do with senshi stuff, call me or call Paris, okay?" She really hoped that Erika would take her up on the offer - Tallulah lived to be helpful, and she didn't feel like she was helping anyone by being sickly and useless.

"Thank you, Tallulah," Erika said slowly, breathing a sigh of relief at the pressure to get involved in the war again finally letting up for a short time. Taking another bite of her toast, she nodded to indicate that yes, she had Tallulah's number, then swallowed the bite so she could answer properly.

"Yeah, I have it. Unless it's changed?" Erika didn't think it had, but it was best to check just in case. Otherwise she might be caught with a defunct number and be effectively lying to her friend. And lying was not only a way to get into trouble, it was something that just didn't sit right in this particular case. Whether or not she got involved in the war again, she couldn't afford any potential alienation - that could only end badly.

"I will," she said, though it was something or an empty platitude. She would take care of herself unless she absolutely had to have the help, even though she did kind of appreciate Tallulah's effort. She thought the older girl was just trying to be nice - unless she thought Erika couldn't handle it? Couldn't take care of herself? Oh no what if she thought that?!? What had Erika done to make her think that about her? "I... yeah. Okay."

"Nope!" Tallulah assured Erika brightly. "Same as always." She might have been away for a year and a half, but she'd had her cell phone number since freshman year of high school and hell and high water couldn't take that away from her. And barring civilian modes of communication, senshi phones were totally a thing. Although if Erika was holding back on rejoining, then she might not answer that...

Best not to overthink it, Tallulah decided. She'd just do her best to keep things low-pressure and make it clear to the younger girl that no matter what she decided or what pace she did things at, she had at least one true friend in Destiny City.

"Great," Tallulah confirmed, although she had to think that Erika sounded a little less than convinced. Had she come on too strong? Oh, now she was worried... Should she tone it down a little? Huh.

"It's really great to see you, Erika," she reiterated. "Seriously. I'm glad you're doing okay."

Redbud-Tree
I'm so sorry I'm so late in replying to this! It must have gotten lost in the shuffle at some point. :C We're probably good to wrap it in a post or two if you want to?

"Okay," Erika said, and smiled tightly at Tallulah. She was glad it hadn't changed, but more glad that it sounded like Tallulah would tell her if she did change it, which was kind of... nice. And reassuring, in a world that kept trying to throw rocks at her.

Erika tried to read Tallulah's expression, but she couldn't really guess at what the older girl was thinking. Was she concerned? Upset? Angry - angry at Erika? Had she said or done something wrong? The gray-eyed girl shifted and took another hesitant bite of her toast, listening to the other girl speak.

"It's - it's good to see you too," she mumbled, staring at her plate like it was far more interesting than it actually was. There were some crumbs on it that formed a tiny mountain range, but it wasn't really all that interesting. "And - and I'm glad you're feeling better," Erika added, lifting her eyes to meet Tallulah's once more.

"I was scared for you," she admitted slowly. Tallulah had always been nice to her, and when she heard that she had gotten so very sick... well, it had been another rock tossed at her by life. She had been worried that Tallulah would die - because that was what happened when people got that sick, they died - but Tallulah had gotten better, was almost recovered, and... and she hadn't died.

"You'll keep getting better, won't you?" She wasn't going to relapse or anything... right? Because that would be terrible.

Silverah

Would she keep getting better? Well, there was always the odd chance of going into kidney failure, but she'd been assured that it was a very slim possibility. "Yeah," Tallulah said, smiling, "As far as I know, I'm out of the woods and I'm going to keep getting better." She had no plans to wind up back in the hospital any time soon!

"So," she added softly, "You don't need to be scared for me anymore." She felt a faint twinge of - of something, selfishness, maybe, at Erika's admission, though. Which probably just meant that she was a horrible person.

She'd finished her pancakes, mostly, and at some point the waitress had dropped her check onto the table. Tallulah picked it up, gave it a quick look, and then dug a few bills out of her bag and put them on the table.

"I should probably get going," she sighed, offering Erika and apologetic smile. Although she didn't say so, since she didn't want to make Erika feel rushed, the lunch crowd would probably be in soon and they'd want the table. "Good luck on the job search - and please don't be a stranger! You can text me about literally anything."
