Quinn was still trying to wrap his mind around it. The death, the destruction...

The Os.

What he had seen on his phone the other day was terrifying, almost as if it was nothing more than a TV show broadcasted on their tiny screens. Only all the people inside were real, he knew a few of them.

And he watched a few of them die.

He felt a shiver go down his spine, threatening for him to drop the stack of paperwork he was carrying around the life labs. Setting the stack down, he only so happened to peer down into the infirmary part of the establishment.

Squinting, he thought he saw a name.... wait. He approached this time, not spending too much time in this section of the building but... No he was..... "Maebe?" He peered into the room, brows creasing. What was she doing here? "What happened?"

He then remembered what happened last time they met, and was glad that he did not flush easily.

Still in the seated position, the bed Maebe was sitting in gave her a nice view of curtains and sheets. She reached out, trying to grab at one of them in order to pull them down so she could see the rest of the infirmary, but her body was still troublesome to control, and her arms never made it very far. When she heard Quinn's voice, she choked in surprise at the sound of her name, and turned to stare up at him, wide eyed with shock. She wasn't expecting any more visitors, at this point. She wasn't even expecting people to know she was hurt.

She felt disoriented at his presence. Disoriented, and suspicious. Quinn wasn't like the others. He was an actual nice guy - decent, caring, good. He didn't belong there. It must have been a fluke - a mistake.

"Hey." She crooned out hoarsely. "I met the bad end of a runic dagger. Is there even a good end? Maybe I got the good end. I am alive, after all."

She reached out one hand, crooked a finger, and gestured for him to come closer. Her skin was getting some of its color back, but she was still paler, and more tired looking than usual. Coupled with the fact her hair was kind of a mess, she wasn't feeling up to snuff.

"What about you? Why are you here?"

Quinn took a moment to assess her general appearance, and took noticed of how disheveled she looked. To be fair his only other time he could compare her to was when she was super drunk, but she looked a lot more pale this time. Smaller too, something about hospital beds made people appear weaker...

He took the invitation and approached closer, looking down at her with a puzzled expression. Was that a trick question? "Well the good end of a dagger i guess is the hilt... nothing pointy on that end normally because thats where the person holds it." It could cause bruises to get hit with the hilt but it was better than being stabbed really. He could be wrong and there was something sharp on the other end of some daggers but, either way he should not be focusing on matters of dagger ends or not.

The point was, she was stabbed. With the really sharp end from the looks of it.

To answer her next question, he turned around and pointed to the back of his coat, which symbolized the Life division golden tree. "Im in life division." He spoke at the same time, back still turned. Only after he paused for a few seconds did he turn around to face Maebe again. "I was passing by doing some work and saw your name on one of the doors." He remembered her name, given only after she was close to sleep the first time they met. It wasn't a easy name to forget. "So I.... wanted to check up on you." Thats what you did with people you knew right?

"Who would stab you though? If you dont mind me asking." He thought fear shields protected against this, unless she was in a training session gone awry?

He actually answered the question. No bite of sarcasm, no ignoring her own, he just.. answered it. It was...

Cute.

She cringed.

Her eyes briefly wandered across the division logo, trying to find some kind of mystical answers to all of her questions inside of the jungle of tree branches that crawled menacingly up his back. She found nothing, of course. But when he turned and explained himself, she breathed in a deep sigh of relief. He was only here because he'd seen her name. He hadn't been searching her out. Quinn was, just as she'd already known, just being a good guy.

It was still difficult to understand, but she accepted this, because it was better than the alternative.

"A bad guy." She answered, her face lighting up in a big, smug grin. But a moment later, she decided Quinn deserved better than her normal sass. "I don't know who he was. I thought he was one of us. He had a hunter weapon, and a runic dagger, and hell, he even kind of acted like he was on my side for a minute. Buuuut, he wasn't." She chuckled. "So I don't know. He was missing a couple of fingers, though. It looks like this wasn't his first rodeo."

Even as she started to snark back at him, it was so quick and then gone he didn't seem to notice. Or if he had, he didnt say anything.

Instead he listened intently, rolling the information she just gave him around in his mind. If she looked she could more than likely almost visualize the little cogs as they moved around in his mind. "Hmm." Bad guy that seemed like a hunter with a few fingers missing and yet...

"Well if he attacked you then yeah he certainly wasn't one of us. i hope." That was a scary thought though. He realized that if that was the case... who else was inside that wasn't supposed to be? "Do you think there are others like him inside too?" He couldn't stop himself from looking back towards the door as he said it.

The other hunter hadn't killed her, which he assumed was either an accident or... maybe the other hunter had a reason for keeping her alive. "I'm glad you seem to be okay though, even if recovering from a nasty wound, is there anything you need?" He was a life trainee so he was certain he could find things if she needed it.

"No, not one of us. But must've been, in the past. Got any intel on unhappy ex-Hunters? Maybe they got pink slipped before their time." She still thought of this place as a real job, with real consequences - like being fired and living through it.

"I don't want to start conspiracy theorizing just yet. I mean, the best guess is some people are disgruntled. So if they're still here.. has anybody taken a paycut lately? Do we..do we have a Hunter equivalent of a union?" It was one of those moments where Maebe looked the way she dressed - young, naive, clueless about what she got herself into when she joined.

As soon as he asked her what she needed, a thousand sarcastic answers flooded through her mind. She winced, and tried to hold her tongue, because Quinn was just trying to be nice, and she'd made quite enough enemies lately. Besides, if she wanted any sort of real info.. she needed people to trust her.

Or other methods of persuasion.

"Nah." She murmured quietly, holding her hand out. "I feel better looking at your pretty face already."

Finding a wall, he leaned against it. "Even so i doubt you have pissed someone off enough to the point of them wanting to flat out kill you in cold blood. Even more so it was someone you didn't meet until that day you said?" Conspiracy theorizing wasn't exactly too far off. If there were hunters whom attack their own, with intent to kill, inside the island... then it wasn't exactly a theory was it?

A pause.

"Besides, why would they try and hurt you because of a paycut or a union? Unless you secretly the book keeper plotting against us or something, thats not your fault." He was trying to toss logic into a situation lacking it, grasping at straws. They needed more intel.

Though his mind was suddenly far away from intel with her next words. He turned his face away from hers, trying to hide the flush that was creeping up his neck. The first time they met she was drunk as a skunk, so he dismissed anything she was really saying then. Maybe she was on some sort of pain killers messing with her head this time? "Glad i could help?" Quinn did say earnestly, still not sure what to say.

He did stare at the hand she was holding out, curiously, wondering if he was meant to take it? Did she want something?

Even as tired, and disabled as she was, Maebe's face managed to express the very clear emotion of suspicion and disbelief when he questioned whether she had the power to make someone want to kill her. She thought that was a challenge - one she could have beaten in ten words or less. She was sure of it.

"You don't know me very well." She exhaled out in a chuckle, burying her head deeper down into her curtains. "Which is a good call. On your part. But no, I'd never met the guy before. I'm not really surprised he tried to kill me - he was clearly doing something illegal, didn't want the Hunters finding out. I walked right out in front of him and gave him something to target. If it wasn't for Taym, I'd be dead."

Quinn's questions had her squirming with discontent. What was that guy doing out there, that was so awful he couldn't be caught? And why did it seem like she should have known better than to try to fool him into thinking she worked for him? Why didn't anybody ever tell her anything?

Quinn was blushing from the compliment, and Maebe would have taken advantage of it, but the entire issue of the botched mission was still heavy on her heart. She curled her fingers up when they were ignored, and stared at her empty hand as she tried to figure things out.

"Yeah." She breathed out in distraction. "I really wish there was more you could do."

He did little more than listen for a short while there, but by the end he had pushed himself off the wall and grew closer to her. It was a little unlike him to approach an issue like this head on, but from the way she was acting it seemed she needed it.

A little late, he ended up reaching out and grasping at the hand that was once offered, even if her fingers were now closing the invitation. "You know, Maebe, it sounds like your almost relieved i don't know you very well." That was curious even, she seemed to be drawing away again. She did this when she was drunk too, get all close but once he pried with questions she seemed to draw away.

"Would i be too forward if i said that, from what i have seen, you are worth getting to know better? I, for one, am glad your okay." He meant that too, he wished nothing ill to happen to her, evil hunters or not.

"What did you want me to do, then?" He managed to tack on at the end. She seemed to have a question following up her statement of wishing he could do more.

She tried not to laugh.

"I can't believe you're the kind of guy who non-sarcastically uses the phrase 'Would I be too forward.'" She breathed out, her lips cracking with a helpless smile. "It's ridiculous. You're ridiculous. The fact that men like you still exist, is ridiculous." She closed her fingers around her hand, and patted his knuckles affectionately with the pads of her fingertips. "I'm glad the world has just a little bit of the right kind of ridiculous left in it, hiding in its little nooks and crannies. Behind all of the bullshit."

Of course, both she and Quinn were now dead to the world. So he wasn't going to be anyone's diamond in the rough, out there in the real world.

"You don't want to know me very well, Quinn." Her fingers slid away, and she managed to turn away enough to make her point. "It'll ruin all the mystery." And that's all she had left anymore, was mystery. For all he knew, she was a ballerina or a porn star. It was better to keep them all guessing.

"I told you. You've done all you can. And I appreciate it, really I do." She turned her head just slightly, side-glancing at him. "I'm not trying to push you away. Just keep you right where you are. You and all of that.. ridiculousness."
