Jude had heard it from a couple of Hunters as they passed by a spot where he happened to be sitting and reading a book on a break between whatever duties he could think of doing simply because ... He had little else to do.

Something about Maebe doing better. Why would Maebe be doing better. Was something wrong? Did something happen? Jude didn't get up to follow them around and only heard something distantly about how Maebe was still at the infirmary. That was all he needed to know.

Closing his book he first disappeared to his room and picked up a couple of things and then went to the infirmary where he appeared by Maebe's bed looking down at her. "So. I was thinking this would happen the other way around."

Was he supposed to hit her and call her an idiot? Was he supposed to hug her? Maybe he'd wait for the end of the visit.

Jude just quietly placed the notebook book on his lap after he dragged up a chair along with some pens, "On a scale of one to ten, how bored are you?"

Maebe was awake when Jude came to see her, but her eyes had been closed, because it was easier that way. She was lying in a gurney, uncomfortably close to another one - but the curtain separated the other patient from her, this time around.

When she heard Jude's voice, her dry lips rose in a weak smile, and her eyes opened, fluttering to adjust for the bright light. "Jude." She whispered out, legitimately happy to see him. "How'd you know I was in here?" Nobody would have ever told him, and she certainly hadn't called for him - or anyone. The quiet moments she sat alone, in the gurney, unwatched by any melancholy presence, were her favorites. Shiloh had Ian watching him day and night. Maebe had no one.

It was a relief.

But she still smiled when she saw Jude sitting there. She couldn't move yet, but she could feel, and everything hurt. She turned her head and gestured her chin at him. "Could you adjust the bed? I want to sit up when I talk to you." His question was, for now, left unanswered.

"Magic faeries came down to me from the heavens and informed me," he said dryly as he moved to make the adjustments needed to help her sit up. "Also someone passed by and mentioned your name so I thought maybe you could use a friend of some sort."

Not that he would have minded if she had summoned him, it wasn't like he thought she was a horrid individual or anything. He quietly placed the notebook and pens down at her side after he finished adjusting everything.

Awkward second or two he picked up the cup of water on a small table nearby and offered it up to her, "You sound like you haven't had any water in days."

She also looked like she hadn't seen a drop of water in days but he politely avoided saying so.

Maebe appreciated the sarcasm. It made her feel less like a cripple, and more like two people having a conversation in a normal setting. The adjustment of her bed also helped, and she relaxed against the cushions. The covers fell away, but she had a hospital gown on. The thick layers of bandages that wrapped around and around her stomach and chest made her look pregnant underneath it.

"A friend." She chuckled out faintly. That was the last thing she wanted, but what Jude offered her was better. Jude never seemed emotional when he tried to keep Maebe safe. There was professionalism in him that soothed her worries.

Jude would not mourn, she told herself. It made her smile again.

"Can't drink that." She warned him. "Can't put anything in me yet." She couldn't move her arms to show him any of the bandages, but they were thick enough to be obvious. "You're right, though. I would kill for some water. But they said I'd die for it, too. Can you do me a favor though?" She licked her lips. "Put some on my lips. They do it with ice chips, but waters fine too I'm sure. Just can't drink it."

She pursed her lips out and made weak, but still sarcastic kissing noises.

"Or at least someone to yell at you to be more careful. I'm not doing so well at the yelling part," he gently poked her forehead with a free fingertip. "Can't take my eyes off of you for a minute."

At the explanation and view she'd given him he sort of made a strange face that not many see on him and that was one of caring, at least it didn't stay long as she went on to explain further what he could do to help her.

Jude then sunk back into his sarcastic behavior, "Careful, people might think you're hitting on me and that would get awkward for everyone."

He snorted as he dipped fingertips into water, "You are at my mercy, better hope I wash my hands regularly," and then he pressed them over her lips to help moisten them before she could think twice.

Luckily for Maebe he did wash his hands regularly.

"Nobody should."

Maebe watched his expression changed, and tried to push through the drug induced haze to read it. She couldn't tell for sure, but something about the melancholy in his eyes worried him. Don't disappoint me now Jude, Maebe thought to herself silently. He'd been so perfect until that moment.

"Jude. I'm always hitting on you. Right now, my entire body is just hurtling towards you at the speed of no, trying to climb up on that train and ride it to nosville. My ticket's in my panties. Can you reach down in there and get it for me? I can't actually move."

Her smile turned slow and smug.

She was very confident that Jude was meticulous about cleanliness. When his fingers pressed against her lips, her eyes fluttered closed, and she sighed in relief.

"God. Thank you." She huffed out. "Is it just me, or does licking your lips make your lips even dryer a few seconds later?"

Jude stared at her as she taunted him and he raised an eyebrow as he calmly put the cup of water down after he helped dab some of it on her lips. He reached over and gently patted her hand, "I'm sorry but someone else is riding this train," Then he flicked her on the forehead because hey, she couldn't do anything about it. "It's cute that you thought you could fluster me, though. Try again later."

Jude surely should have been a doctor.

"Saliva isn't a very good way to keep lips from not going dry, no," He settled back down in his seat again and folded his hands on his lap.

"So, do you remember how it happened or is everything a haze to you?" He pointed at her lazily to pretty much indicate her state of being.

Maebe groaned as Jude did not even so much as give her a blush. He was such a disappointment. She knew that Ariane had that train locked down, but she could have at least gotten him to look away.

Nothing. Jude was a rock.

What a d**k.

"I remember everything until the end," She figured the conversation would turn to this, eventually. "My first real mission. I think it was a rousing success." She smiled, and her teeth gleamed white with pride. "Up until the part I was stabbed in the chest with a Hunter weapon. Though, hey, I'm alive, aren't I? I consider that flawless."

"Yes, being filled with gaping holes is always a signature of success," he murmured softly with a little bit of a furrowed brow. It was not the most supportive set of words she would hear from a person. Jude shifted a little bit in his seat to lean forward, "I mean, yes. You made it, you are here now. That is thing to be proud of but... "

Stared at her solemnly, "If you do die before I do I will find a way to bring you back and kick your a**," he said in a rather serious tone. It was like he'd adopted her or something. Weird

Like hell he was going to cry over her corpse. It isn't like he liked her or anything.

"Wait...Stabbed with a hunter weapon? Did the target acquire your weapon?" Jude looked ... un-surprised but suitably concerned.

"Ha." She huffed out dryly. "I could probably take you. Even dead." Sheyawned, and shook the sleepiness away. She was brushing off his warnings because she didn't take them seriously, she refused to take them seriously. Jude felt obligated to say things like that, because he was a good guy. She understood the way guys like him worked. He probably felt guilty for not being there, but that was just what good people did when others were hurt.

She would have patted him fondly on the arm, but she couldn't move.

"Oh. Uh. I guess, not exactly a Hunter weapon, what of the runic daggers - I mean, that's technically a Hunter weapon, right? He had one. Well no, he had a real Hunter weapon too, he used it to sledgehammer me across the room, wiped my shield right out. Poor Thaw's still brooding silently over his incapability to protect me, haha."

She felt the angry, overheated grumble, and welcomed him back. It had taken a while to restore him, as well.

"Dream on," He said simply with a dismissive handwave. He noticed the yawn he wasn't really sure he was ready to leave her side just yet. Jude simply stayed put for the time being and listened to her explanation of what had happened - at least as far as she remembered.

There was a small thoughtful sound, "Who hurt you then? Not that I could do anything about it in the long run. Just being overly curious I guess..." He had at least a one potential candidate in mind, but then it could be a complete surprise to who it was.

"My weapon doesn't seem to worry about protecting me too much but then again she also picks random times to worry about me," he shrugged his shoulders.

"Another Hunter." Maebe mumbled out sleepily. Her head was turned to rest on the pillow, but her eyes, heavily lidded, were still trained on Jude. "He said he wasn't on our side. That much is obvious, huh." She strained to keep talking. "I didn't recognize him. He uh.." Her memory was getting a little fuzzy, but she could still remember the details. "Two fingers missing on one hand. And a big O on the back of the other. Maybe he got branded or something. Does that sound like anyone here, to you?"

She struggled to remember more, but there was little to pull from. "And sledgehammer weapon. And.. I don't know. Maybe he was working undercover." She looked down at her chest, where he'd stabbed and then electrocuted her. "Deep undercover."

"Huh." Jude sort of felt taken aback by this revelation. Teach him to not pay attention to missions or really do much at all around him. Jude couldn't claim that he was any more interested in being proactive either. "Not anyone I can remember. I mean there is a Hunter when I first woke up...He was missing an arm but he'd also woken up around the same time I did."

"I just uhh...violence of Hunter against Hunter has never been uncommon." Jude quietly scooted his chair closer to her little resting spot and then just put a hand on her shoulder and patted her a little awkwardly, "Don't let me fill you with paranoia though, I'm just always expecting the worse in people now a days."

Maebe was probably one of the few people that he probably didn't expect the worst from even if they had butted heads a little.

"Oh. Don't worry." Maebe's voice had gone quiet, and the look in her eyes had cooled to icy disgust. "I'm well aware of how common the violence between Hunters is." She looked away, sullenly brooding over the loss of her best friend to none other than another hunter, himself. If she'd had any idea that Shiloh, AND Rep, were somewhere in the ward with her, no pain medications in the world could have kept her on that bed.

"I don't get it, Jude." She whispered. "I don't get the point. What are we doing here?" She turned back to him, her eyes pleading with unanswered questions. "What are you doing here?"

The disgust in her face didn't invoke any particular reaction in him other than to shrug. If she was aware of it then he had no reason to further his case on the subject - she was one of those girls that seemed almost naive and streetwise all at the same time. It was always hard to try and explain things to those sorts of girls.

He gazed up at the ceiling as her pleading eyes centered on him. Jude wasn't sure how to answer for a few seconds, "I am here because I was running away from something and protecting someone. I also wanted to protect people in general from the things that went bump in the night, I guess..." His expression was one of those uncertain faces one had when they were lost for a moment.

"Except I guess I lost my own way on the path to that. Why did you sign up? Wasn't it to protect someone or are you hiding, too?" He finally looked at her again with a neutral expression on his face.
