Carrion waited patiently for his current guardian to rouse himself. Well, maybe patiently was too strong of a word... The Necrakein sat precariously perched over Oblivion, nearly falling atop him as he bounced excitedly. The sky was growing ever darker and the moon was glowing brighter with each passing minute. And Levi promised that when night fell, he'd take Carrion out on a hunt. For real dragons! Wasn't that just grand? Of course, it would've been even grander if his dad was coming along, but Sam had departed almost as quickly as he'd arrived, muttering something about 'needing to fulfill a few quests before he was too tied down.' Of course, that was all a load of dragon manure! He already had a child! You didn't get much more tied down than that! But Sam was spending less and less time with them of late, leaving Carrion and Levi by themselves...
The Keindred sighed as he looked over Oblivion's sleeping form. Yes, he liked the glowy-eyed Alikein, but he couldn't take the place of his own father. That would be asking too much of him, as much as Carrion could clearly see how the Diabi desperately struggled to ingrain his life with the other two, for reasons unknown to the Keindred.
The young one scowled as the soft sounds of Oblivion's snoring reached his ears. At this rate, he'd never wake up, and they'd never get to hunt together! That was simply unacceptable. Carrion was already perched close enough that Levi's feathers dusted against him as he breathed. All he really had to do was give him a little nudge... Just a little one. Carrion sat up on his haunches, pulling his front claws close to his body. It would only take a little bump, nothing too serious... Levi couldn't be that much of a sound sleeper... The Keindred leaned forward, ready to give the older, larger Alikein a pat with his claws. But as he shifted his weight, he misjudged the strength required to hold himself, and ended up pitching his whole body forward, claws landing heavily against soft feathers. With a squeak of surprise, he darted away as Oblivion bolted upright, glaring around the cave until his glowing crimson orbs landed accusingly on Carrion.
"What's the matter?" The Ayrala squeaked, clearly flustered, yet doing his best to feign innocence.
Oblivion just scowled at the youngster and shook his head. He wasn't dense, Carrion should know that... With a roll of his eyes he stretched himself across the cool stone floor, feeling his bones creak and arching his back. His feathered tail flipped across him to tickle his own nose, before plopping to his side as Levi rose. "You're such a troublesome child..." The Alikein grumbled, rolling his neck to get the quirks out. Despite his time here, he still wasn't entirely used to sleeping on the cold, hard ground... His nests on Soudul were just as feathery and soft as he was. He almost felt like living there was like being pampered compared to this place...
Carrion's frill poked up indignantly. "I am not!" He retorted hotly. "It's just... You said you'd take me hunting tonight..." The Ayrala muttered quietly, red orbs dropping briefly to the floor before managing to find Oblivion again.
Levi gazed curiously at his companion before he slowly nodded. Yes, he did remember saying something like that. He'd remembered regretting it soon after, too... It wasn't wise to take a child out into the desert. But then, Levi was the best protection Carrion could ever have. He was sure they'd be fine. "I do remember that..." Oblivion agreed. "Very well. If you are so eager as to pounce on a sleeping Alikein, I suppose I have no choice but to take you! But be warned: The road may be long and grueling! I'll send you away if you start complaining!" Oblivion told the youngster firmly, giving as stern a look as he could manage.
Carrion's eyes lit up, and he nodded furiously. "Yes, yes, fine!" Hmph! So long as Oblivion kept things as interesting as he thought they'd be, there was no reason to complain, anyway. Without any further ado, the two of them departed out into the desert.

With the sun having dipped below the horizon long ago, the sky was now completely blackened, the moon hiding beyond the mountain range and out of Carrion and Oblivion's sights. Neither minded of course. Oblivion had grown up on the dark continent of Soudul, and though neither knew it, it was also Carrion's homeland. Both were well-suited to the nightlife, something that couldn't be said for their draconian prey. Not to mention the fact that Levi had been diligently stalking every night since his arrival, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike the perfect can. He had his sights set on a group of Kiandris. They made their home in the desert not too far from the mountains that Levi and Carrion lived in.
The Diabi wasn't stupid enough to think that he could take on a whole family of dragons, but this particular bunch sent out one or two of its members each night as a hunting party, hoping to catch prey that slunk around in the safety of night. But not even a dragon could beat him in his own element. Even if he had the added handicap of toting around a young child. Levi did his best to explain his thoughts to Carrion while they traveled. At this time of night, the desert was painfully cool, especially to the sensitive young Keindred. So, Levi offered him a snuggly ride within his soft feathers, at least until he needed to fight.
Then came the waiting. Levi took up a post hiding behind a rocky formation while he waited for the Kiandris to emerge. It was clear that it was neither he nor Carrion's favorite part of the night. Especially since the young Keindred only stayed quiet grudgingly. But his anticipation was practically palpable. Levi had moved him from his back to nestled right between his front legs. Hopefully, all his gleefully fidgeting would be muffled against the Diabi's feathers...
But after what felt like forever, Levi finally heard the faint sound of wing beats. The Diabi leaned down to press his maw right up against the Ayrala's ear, hoping he wouldn't catch his prey's attention. "All right, little guy. Are ya ready?" He questioned softly, nosing the youngster to his feet.
Carrion bounced up without a second thought, his gaze instantly going skyward in hopes of seeing his first dragon. "Yes!" The Ayrala hissed just as softly, crimson orbs flitting about eagerly.
"Good, then. Watch and learn." Levi hummed in amusement, crouching as he prepared to take off, but a thought occurred to him and gave him pause... "By 'watch,' I mean, 'stay here.'" He informed his companion with a nod before he shot into the air.
Stay?! Carrion thought, flabbergasted. If he'd just wanted to sit and stay, he could've done that at home! With a 'Hrumph!' of disapproval, he clawed his way onto the rocky outcrop. As he glanced up to the sky, he had just enough time to see Oblivion smash headlong into one of the dragon's bellies. He gaped in awe. There were two golden dragons up there.Neither had been expected the quick attack. The dragon that Oblivion hadn't collided with was suddenly assaulted by an array of dark spires. They circled it and then pierced it from all sides. It didn't even stand a chance. The beast disintegrated before it's body could even hit the sand.
Meanwhile, Oblivion took advantage of the other Dragon's shocked state. Though he was much more proficient with his magic than he was with his claws, he raked his nails along the dragon's flank. hoping to get his teeth into the beast's soft neck. But the dragon would hardly allow it, and when Levi dove forward for the kill, the Kiandri retaliated by driving its fangs into Oblivion's shoulder, sending waves of sparks through its body.
While it didn't stop the Alikein from making his kill, as the dragon fell to earth, Levi went with it, landing in a harsh plume of sand. He shivered. The sparks had actually stung him, and the bite was pretty deep... But as, he expected, he was still alive. He groaned softly, turning to nose of few of his shoulder feathers out of the way so that he could lick the puncture wounds from the dragon's teeth. He didn't have any kind of healing magic, unfortunately...
Carrion beamed gleefully, skittering from the rock as he prepared to leap to Levi's side. He couldn't fly, so there had been no fight for him, but... He paused and blinked. In the cold chill of a desert night, he suddenly felt warmth. He turned to look over his shoulder, eyes widened in fear. Before him stood a tall, orange Firani, already reveling in the easy kill it would be able to make this night. the Ayrala was too afraid to move, and his voice came out as a squeak. "L-Levi..." He croaked.
The dragon bared his fangs and then dove for the kill. Carrion took in a sharp gasp of air and then blew out hard, making a gust of wind just strong enough to scoot his tiny frame across the sand. "Oblivion!" He shrieked, turning and running toward his coal-colored companion.
Levi perked up from his grooming, turning to see the youngster running toward him with a fiery Firani hot on his tail. The Diabi gasped in surprise and flew into action. If Carrion got hurt, Sam would never forgive him! His feathered wings beat quickly, despite the pain in his shoulder.
When the Firani spotted him, it paused to send a heat wave out at Levi, but the Alikein didn't let that deter him. He erected a shield of darkness at his front to guard from the heat. When he crashed into the dragon, the shield splintered, and shards of it drove into the Firani's body. It roared and swatted at him, but Levi gracefully shot into the air again, before diving back down with one of his dark spires as a lance. It pierced through the top of the dragon's skull, and down it went.
With a huff, Levi plopped to the sand next to it. "Carrion... Maybe we should try something a little easier next time."
