__________________________________ The cards were all laid out before him, The Journey, Two of Stones – A Challenge, The Pole Star, The Great Bear, The World Tree and Six of Arrows – Transition.
He stared at the old hedge witch, for many a moment, waiting for her to start speaking. Yet all she could do was stare at the cards in front of her, the rook besides her glaring almost painfully back. Then she muttered something, closing her eyes while entangling her fingers into her hair. It looked painful as she pulled, the rook flying above her, eyes aglow.
“You boy, you… You have special things to do. A sleepless night is ahead for you! Remember this! What dangerous things are rising from this strange fog! You must remember this! Chase you they will, attack you and enslave you they will! Break free and find the tree of life. Find it and you shall forever be changed. You will be strong… you…”
The old hedge witch paused and stared at him, eyes almost terrified. “GO!” Pushing him away from her, the hedge witch quickly stumbled away leaving him shocked and confused on his little hut’s floor. Her cards left behind almost like a warning.
It took him awhile to finally get to sleep, the message from the old hedge witch running its course through him. It wasn’t like his normal readings. Whatever happened, it wasn’t natural. It terrified Gildra and honestly, himself. Rolling onto his side, Emrick slowly faded a soft pumping of images touching the very tip of his mind. -------------------
Beads of sweat dripped from his brow as he lay all but paralyzed. Had it not been the steady shake in his hands he would have feared he was dead.
It had all been a dream, a strangely vivid and cruel dream, but a dream none the less. At least, that is what he told himself as he attempted to steady his heart and mind as reality slowly set in. There was something oddly unfamiliar about the place he was currently resting. His body was cold and wet and the warm, friendly smell of burning herbs replaced by an almost sulfuric scent. This was no gypsy camp, no, he was in a quagmire!
Gasping, Emrick quickly jerked up to a seated position, staring first at his still shaking hands before looking outward. A thick, strange fog filling the environment around him making it all but impossible to see. A total sense of loss washed before him, he was in the forest of Wardwood. A place that easily could swallow him whole and never release him, yet he stood a strange sense of confidence washing over him as something told him to head north.
-------------------
It was like he was almost sleepwalking, one moment conscience the next moving automatically, yet this time his heart was in his throat. His eyes staring straight into another, hungry mans. He was trapped, a hole becoming his prison in the night. Something telling him he might be forever trapped there.
Yet he faded again, this time dreaming, only it seemed too real to be a dream. The screams of his troupe the strong thick smell of burning flesh and then the loose grip of an old witch pushing him into the forest once more with only a few words on her lips.
“...what dangerous things are rising from this strange fog... “
-------------------
And then he awoke. The smell of campfire and patchouli filling the air. It had all been a dream. Only… the cards were still facing him and a totem was in his lap.
