It's dark in here, Kararti thought as she bounded through the forest. Though it was just nearing the end of the day, the evergreens that surrounded her blocked out the light of sunset. She supposed that it was a good thing that she wasn't afraid of the dark; her brothers had scared that fear out of her during their foalhood. Brats though they might have been, she knew that no monsters lurked in the dark - well, aside from them, if they had managed to follow her. Despite all the stories they had told, the three of them had always failed to bring back a beast of the night from their hunts, and so had concluded that they didn't exist.
Prancing between the trees, Kara tried listening for songbirds. When she was in a good mood, and she was, she loved to hear their voices. They could find little tunes, notes soaring and warping through the air as they flew overhead. When they huddled close in cold weather, their song took on a shrill quality, like they were expressing their need for warmth. She giggled a little at the thought of the tiny birdies, all huddled in a row, their plumage puffed up and eyes closed against the cold. It made her smile.
Eventually, when she was out of breath, Kara stopped. She found herself in the middle of the forest, in an even darker place than she had been before. There were rounded hills and bare boulders sticking out all over the place, as though something had scoured them from their beds. Curious about her surroundings, she began to inspect the rocks - if she was lucky, she could find a gem to string around her neck.
