Bedwyr ambled down the forest path. The trees around him were mostly bare, casting sharp shadows in the sunlight of the winter day. It had been a long time since he had come this way. The last time he had been in this area, he had met his son and his human, but he was certain that the pair - and their goat - would have moved on by now. Everything looked different in the winter, and the fact that he was venturing through from the other direction didn't help things look any more familiar. It was quiet in this forest - somehow, though silence usually didn't bother him, it was unsettling today. Perhaps it was because last time he was here, the forest had been filled with the crackling of a fire, and it seemed eerie without it.
With a sigh, Bedwyr looked around. The deer trail that he had been following had come to an end, widening into a well-beaten track. Finally, he thought, and stepped onto it. Were it not for this path, he would have been lost; without it, he was blind. He would have had to go back to the beginning of the deer trail to know where he was again. Smiling and putting a little more spring in his step, the old stallion followed the path for a while. He had to be nearing the middle of the forest now, where he had met Fergus for the first time. He still marveled at the boy every time he thought about him; though Bedwyr had never had the chance to help him grow up, and Fergus had never known his true parents, he had turned out remarkably well. Of course, he knew he could never have expected Fergus to think of him as his "true" father... But Bedwyr would always think of the young stallion as his true son.
