It was dawn, the morning after the Vitterfolk had their festival. She had promised Ciro plenty of time after the ceremony out of respect for the herd. It had been overall, a very enjoyable night. The only downside had been finding out that her precious, eldest daughter had been hurt by a stallion.
...and knowing she had failed to be there for her, as her mother.
'I promise, sweetheart, I am here for you, now.'
Dual-toned eyes watched the sun peek over the horizon, the gurgling river providing a pleasing, hypnotic backdrop for their night's rest. The mare shifted on her hooves before settling, at ease and comfortable. Cocking a back hoof, she stretched her wings skyward with a deep breath and slow, soft exhale. Her wings lowered and one was tucked against her side. The other she spread, fanning to shelter her daughter.
She was gorgeous, really. Soft gold sun with the fire of a brilliant sunset. Aleera marvelled at her, at how she looked so much like herself. She could feel her gaze soften as she watched the young mare at her side. Her eyes passed back and forth as the sun continued its climb through the sky and set the world on fire with the light of a new day.

The morning passed without much excitement and despite the cover provided by Aleera's wing, it wasn't long before the warmth of the sun hit Ciro's face. The young mare stirred and blearily opened her eyes to drink in her surroundings. Or at least try to at any rate. It had been a long night for them at the festival and wanting to go back to sleep was the first thought that crossed her mind.
"Mmmn...going to be a long day..." Ciro murmured, staring at a few long blades of grass in her face. She let a few moments of silence pass before stretching her wings out. She let out a startled gasp when her wings brushed the older mare at her side. Ciro had completely forgotten she had been reunited with her mother the night before.
The young mare beamed up at Aleera, much like she used to as a foal during the time they had been together then. No matter how old she got, Ciro felt she could never avoid giving her parents a bright smile every time she saw them.
"Mom~"

The stirring murmur from the young mare at her side brought Aleera's attention firmly back upon her daughter. Her gaze was watchful, concerned, and above all else: warm with love. Her ears flickered a bit at Ciro's words, but, the gasp of surprise caused a smile to curve her lips upwards.
And when her daughter looked up and beamed, her heart melted all over again. Not that it was hard, but she saw so much of the bright character Ciro truly was, and not the dejected mare she caught glimpses of more frequently than she wanted to.
"Good morning, my beautiful baby~" She greeted, keeping her wing extended in that sheltering gesture as she gently nuzzled her daughter's forelock. "How did you sleep, Ciro?"

"I slept fine." Ciro replied, looking back down at the grass before her and then out across the field. "Looks like most of the herds that were around last night have dispersed...."
Pushing herself to her feet, the young mare smiled again and nuzzled her mother. "I'm glad you're here. I really did hate it when you left us...dad did his best, and helped me, but it just wasn't the same." She murmured, casting her gaze down to the ground.
"He misses you, even if he won't admit it openly."

Aleera dipped her head in a nod. "Indeed they have."
She'd watched some of them leave when she woke at different points, but more had left before she'd fully woken not too long ago. As Ciro rose to her feet Aleera took the time to stretch her wings out with a sigh, lifting them high over her head before folding them back in, but curving the one that had been extended in a sheltering gesture back over Ciro's back as she turned to nuzzle her little girl in turn.
She was quiet as she considered her words and wondered if she blamed her mother at all...
The mare caught her daughter's forelock in affection and apology.
"There are no apologies I can say that can make up for it, Ciro, but I hope you know I regret it and I am deeply sorry." As for Al'ar...she breathed in. Maybe she could have allowed herself to fall in love with him, but her heart had turned her down a different path. "I've missed him, too, truth be told. He is a fine friend...and I did you all wrong in leaving."

Ciro smiled brightly in return to her mother's affections, pressing her own head against Aleera's gently. "It's okay, I understand. It's been hard...but everything's been more or less okay otherwise....except for the whole mess made up of...that stallion." She mumbled, her words dripping with both crippling sadness and hateful venom.
A frown crossed her features with the thought and the young mare pulled away to hide her face among her mother's wing. "...but you're here now...and it's all going to be okay..."

Aleera's ears swept back at the tone and then pinned as her daughter hid her face. Both disgust in herself and in the stallion that hurt her little girl flared to life...
...but her breath was soft and warm and patient. Her nuzzle was gentle and loving and reassuring.
"That's right, Ciro. I'm here, now, as I should have been before. You don't have to work through this alone."

She felt a small smile cross her features once more with the safety and assurance of Aleera's words and touch. It reminded Ciro of the times when she was still little and was able to go to her mother about anything in the world. She felt safe again for once in a long time.
"It...it's really okay, momma...I...I got my baby Melon and I love him...so I'm not always alone." She said, looking up at her with tear filled eyes.

"Oh, love." Aleera murmured, giving her a tiny nudge. "You can have many or just a few others around you and still feel alone. But...I would like to meet and spend some time with my grandson, as well. With you."
She smiled, needing Ciro to know that what she likely felt sometimes was okay and normal and part of heartbreak and life. Even with her, Ciro might still feel lonely or alone. She hoped her presence would fill that void and mend it...but she was wise enough to know it would take time.
What mattered was that she was here.

Ciro nodded and nuzzled against her again happily, reveling in the warmth and comfort radiating from her mother. "Y-yeah...anytime, momma. You can visit us anytime...you can meet him anytime! I just...I just wish you could meet the other two as well..." She murmured "I love you." She continued to stand against her in silence for what seemed like forever. Her gaze only shifted a few times, mostly to watch a bird fly overhead or p***k her ears towards a possible rabbit in the grass. It was a while before she spoke again.
"Where do you live now...?" Ciro asked, closing her eyes. "I never knew where you went, I was always curious, and to know I have other siblings now too..."

"Perhaps our paths will cross in time." She gently reassured. As Ciro nuzzled in, Aleera's wing dipped down and curved over her back. Her eyes softened. "I love you, too."
Her nose brushed against her daughter's hair, but she stood, relaxed, one hoof cocked and resting against the ground as she soaked up the silence and simply enjoyed being near her daughter once again. Her eyes, partly closed, opened up again as her daughter the colour of a jeweled sunflare spoke once again.
"A few days away from here, by flying. A little further, recently." She murmured. "I wandered, for a time, and just contented myself to have Adelis nearby. Eventually... I came across the one that, despite being unaware at the time, would become my lifemate. He was injured...and actually quite unruly and somewhat hostile--mostly because of his injury. I had three more children with him. The one that you bumped into is Ae'ilvainyx."
