"Now son, I've got somewhere very important to go... I might be gone a while. You and your brother are going to stay here with your...mother," Grim said the final word as if it left a poor taste in his mouth.

"Stay away from that...Reika...And keep quiet at night. Sleep during the day if you can and stay on your toes. Don't let anyone touch you," he delivered his orders to the teen as if they were the simplest in the world.

He had been looking back at the run down mansion while he spoke but now he turned his eyes towards his son who was obviously not paying attention. A growl escaped his throat but the boy was still oblivious.

"Pay attention, boy!" he snapped.

Soren heard him, of course, but his father might as well have been preaching to the choir. If he had not learned these things the hard way, he would not be covered in these cuts, these bite marks.

"Yes, father" he responded quietly, still not looking at him. Still, he could feel his father's glare roll away and he felt more comfortable.

Soren didn't understand why he was pretending to care now. It was not like he had ever protected him or his brother before. Soren and Dieter. Dieter and Soren. Forever together with nothing but themselves.

The growing colt finally turned his gaze onto his father who he saw was once again staring at the mansion and he rolled his eyes. Soren would never understand why his father refused to just leave...

Grim growled under his breath in annoyance at the child. He was more trouble than he was worth. Trying to wrangle his mother when she wasn't...in a bad mood, which happened nightly, could be a chore. He finally managed it, though, and they had the audacity to be born boys.

No matter. They could prove useful some day. Some how.

"This is your life we are discussing, Soren. You might not value it but I do. I just have some errands I must run and they are too dangerous for you and your brother. Just...please be careful," he finished in a tone that almost sounded like he cared.

Soren didn't buy it, though.

"KAJA!" Grim called out in an authoritative tone. He had met the mare before when he was traveling through the mansion. She had tried to guide him out. He walked through her instead. She was not fond of him but he saw her watching the boys from inside the house. She seemed almost...motherly. She seemed a king spirit at any rate and had always tried to protect anyone who accidentally wandered in.

User Image After a moment of silence, a pale see-through mare materialized at the front steps of the house. Unmoving, unblinking, the lyra watched them with curiosity. Grimhilt never spoke to her. In fact, he ignored her presence. That was why she had come to readily when he called. Not out of a sense of duty, he could not touch her to force her to his will, but out of curiosity.

"Yes, Grimhilt? What did you want?" her wisp of a voice floated over to them, chilling Soren to the core.

A ghost during the daytime? He had seen them, her even, at night. She hid him a few times but he had never seen them during the day. The colt found himself thankful she was a nice mare.

Grimhilt eyed the mare for a moment, inhaling deeply and puffing out his chest just a bit to make himself look bigger. Perhaps she was a ghost, and she had always seemed nice. Something about her was inherently trust worthy for the stallion. Sometimes he heard her talking to someone else in the mansion. It would seem she had lost quite a bit there and now this sad existence was all she had left.

What a pity. She looked as if she had been a rather vibrant mare in life...

After a moment of lingering on that thought he stepped closer to his son, not so much out of love, but to show ownership. This was his.

"Kaja, I must go for a time. I will return soon but in the mean time, look after my boys. They cannot tread the paths I need to tread...At least this on can't anyways," he paused and glared at his normal son for a moment, "I know a shaman who might have some answers about this place and I cannot wait another day to leave. Keep them alive at night and during the day, what's left of their mother can watch over them," he did not ask. Grim ordered.

----

Soren looked up at his father, glaring right back, before stepping away. A small rebellion that went unnoticed by his father, but nonetheless, it meant something to him. He was his own stallion, not some pawn of a star who did not care for him. Few really cared for him anyways. Sometimes he thought he mother did. Other times she tried to hurt him. Either way he wanted to make her smile again...He could not help but love her. The only comfort he had in this forgotten hell except for his brother...But they weren't exactly touchy feely. Soren was forced to keep his emotions to himself, locked away where no one could see.

Where the mansion couldn't see.

He feared if it were to peer into his soul it would swallow him up.

"I don't need anybody to watch me, I can take care of myself," he protested, stomping a small hoof into the ground, watching as the blood dripped down his leg from the effect.

The wounds never closed.

Was that the mansion's doing?

"Dieter and me'll be fine here all by ourselves! Not like you take care of us anyways,"

-----

Kaja sighed as she watched the father and son fight with each other. It was heartbreaking, really. It made her miss her own foals, long gone with their father.

It pained her to know that their death was what had lead to this hellish place laying claim on her...This was, of course, knowledge she could not let on that she had. Should the priestesses realize someone who was not a Kuze had some knowledge as to how the place worked, gods only knew what they would do to her...Or try to do to her.

Before they could argue any further, the mare stepped closer. Her presence chilled the air around her and it caught their attention. Both stopped speaking and watched her.

"I will keep my eye on them, but I can only do so much. They should know by now how to survive this place. I can only help if they choose to be foolish...

Grim growled at his son and lowered his face so that they were eye level.

"You should show your father some respect, you insolent whelp," he responded before straightening himself up to his fully height.

"Kaja, that is not my problem. Just make sure they survive. I might find a use for these boys yet, but for now the mansion is more pressing,"

---

Soren did not cower at his father's aggression. He was used to it. He stood stoically still only breaking the facade to stick his tongue out at his father. He was done with this conversation and done with listening to the hairy old codger bark orders at everyone around him. Soren was of the opinion that his father forgot he was no longer in his old home. He had held some sway in his old herd but he had not returned since his encounter with Nyomi and now because of it all, he was alive.

Joy.

---

Kaja repressed a laugh at the foal's antics and simply nodded to Grimhilt. There was no reasoning with a stallion so hard headed. Once he had his mind set to something there was no persuading him otherwise.

She wondered if he truly cared about the children he was leaving behind. Unfair. Horrible parents like him get to do whatever they please but devoted parents like her? Lost everything.

Bitter.

Feeling like they had finally come to an agreement, Grimhilt scoured his son, giving him one last look over before he turned. He nodded to the boy and the ghost mare before his form began to shrink, hooves splitting into paws, tail thickening as a spine wound its way through what before had only been hair. The sound of bones breaking and reforming filled the air. The sound and the pain associated with it were nothing to him now.

Grim did not look back as he departed.

---

Soren watched the transformation, holding back his fascination. No was was he gonna let the old man know he was interested in this amazing ability. No way was he going to show how much he wished he had gotten that trait too. Ah, to be a wolf...

Nevermind.

The foal sighed and turned to the ghost.

"wanna play?"

---

Kaja smiled sweetly down at the boy as his father vanished, her eyes flickering around for something they could do.

"...How about...hide and seek?" she cracked a wicked grin.
