User Image Belenus pawed at the earth under his feet as he though, pale, impercievable eyes almost invisible beneath their mask. He sought the...company of others to fill the void he felt being away from his herd but that had turned out to be fairly...fruitful. More so than he had expected. The star had been unaware that males could beget a new generation together and beget he certainly had. Now he had two foals to keep alive with only the vaguest idea of what that meant. He felt a warmth toward them - they were himself, after all, but he had no real means of understanding them. After all, Blod had not exactly been mare of the year and though she taught him many valuable things, he did not necessarily want to be like she had...

The two winged beasts frolicked in front of him and it almost made him smile. Almost. Instead he snorted, thankful for Helias being the older of the two. With his strong wings, he had already managed to glide a bit and it was clear he would be a strong flier. He would be able to teach Melitta. Belenus certainly had no idea what it was like to be high up in the air but having both a solara and an arion could most definitely prove useful...Muscle and finesse...

If he had a herd to run.

---

User Image Melitta dropped to the ground and began to happily munch on a daisy, only vaguely aware of her father looming ahead of her. He was a quiet sort. He didn't talk much but she loved to talk. She learned more and more every day and every day Helias showed her new words! Words were wonderful things. So much meaning produced so...eff...effor...effortl...easily.

Easily would work. Easy was good.

As she slurped in the stem, she glanced up at Helias. He was quiet like daddy too but not as grumpy. He seemed to think a lot and she found herself wondering what was going on in there.

Oh! Another daisy!

The hot pink solara boy watched his little sister dutifully. He was a little older than her and though they had different second dads, he felt like it was his job to protect her. He had seen dad get defensive of them before when strange stars got too close...and he had come back painted red before. It made him smell strange and Helias didn't like it. He'd asked his dad to wash it off but it only made him angrier and he yelled.

Daddy was strange.

Helias found himself wondering about his other father. His body had to have taken after him more than Belenus. Was he as angry as he was? Was he as quiet? When it got cold, would he had allowed him to lay down with him? What had happened to his sister?

A slurping noise brought him from his thoughts and he glanced down at Melitta munching on some flowers. He leaned down and nibbled on one before looking at her wings. Dad was distant but perhaps he and Mel could be close.

"Say, Melitta...Have you ever tried to fly?"

Melitta blinked and looked up at her older brother, her head cocked to the side. Fly? Not really in particular, no. She was, however, hungry. She shook her head before ducking down to chew on some grass.

"What's that?" she questioned through mouthfuls of grass.

Whatever it was, she hoped she could eat it.

Helias smiled at his sister's antic and nudged her with his nose to get her attenion, which she gave him now that she had a mouthful of something tasty to snack on.

"Your wings, silly. You use them to fly. You flap them really, really hard and they lift you up. You're like a bird! You can soar the air and you can see everything from up there!" or at least he had heard as much, anyways...He hadn't ever managed to do more than glide a few feet. Flying was hard.

"Would you like to try?"

Belenus sat back and began to chew on some grass as well, heeding the call of his empty stomach. That boy. He was...soft. He wasn't like the rest of the shadow herd. He would need to toughen up before he could truly be integrated. It was bad enough he was bright pink. The herd had some color stigmas what with Ret's eye bleeding brood of ankle biters. The last thing he needed was for his son to be ill treated because of the color...Sure her matched Blod, but nobody messed with her. She was untouchable.

He, however, was a young stallion who hadn't grown into his wings yet. He would need to put on a mask, a face, and he would need to toughen up to become the son he really needed to be.

Melitta stopped her chewing long enough to glance up at her brother, eyes going wide at the thought. Fly? Like a bird? Imagine what she could see from up there! Food...everywhere. She would never be hungry. And she could see so many others from the herd! Why...she could hear everything.

She swallowed and stood up straight, turning to look at her wings. She fluttered them curiously before looking at her big brother's own larger, stronger wings. They were more muscular...But there was no reason not to try!

"I want to fly! I want to fly! I WANT TO FLY!" she shrieked in excitement, bouncing up and down before taking off in circles around Helias, flapping her wings excitedly. Maybe if she ran fast enough she would just take off! Be a natural at this flying business!

---

Helias chuckled and didn't try to repress the smile she brought to his face. Melitta was something else. Very sweet little foal. He hoped this herd never changed that. It was full of mean stars who did not care about anyone but themselves. It made him sad.

Sometimes he would cry. Sometimes someone would find him. Sometimes he had to run before they could hurt him.

Shaking those thoughts from his head, Helias stepped out and laughed when his sister, not paying attention, ran into him. As she got up and glared at him, he said "just watch".

The colt began to run, building up decent speed before he opened his wings. With a nervous flap or two his hooves came a foot off the ground and he let out a laugh before he lost his momentum and came to a skidding halt.

"Now you try!"

---

Belenus watched, his irritation with the boy growing. He was so...gentle.

Bah.

What sort of first born son was this? Perhaps he should have kept the girl. Perhaps she would have had the instincts he needed for this herd.

"Try not to fall next time," he muttered under his breath before turning his head down to chew. Surely Melitta would be able to pick this up quickly so they could move on. Belenus was getting annoyed watching them play. This was time wasted. Time that could have been spent teaching them how to fight now that Melitta was growing older...

Melitta's eyes grew wide with amazement as she watched his hooves leave the ground. He flew! He really flew! Big brother Helias was amazing! He was the best flyer ever! He was the coolest! He was awesome!

"WOW!" she cried out, swooping her head down so she could get a better look at just how far his hooves had left the ground.

Before the words had left his mouth, Melitta took off running, flapping her wings fervently...But nothing was happening.

Maybe if she jumped.

The filly's hooves left the ground and...she immediately fell in a tangle of legs and tail.

---

Helias watched, holding his breath, as his sister tried her best to lift herself off the ground. For a minute it looked as if she would succeed before..Nope.

He trotted over and tried to help her untangle herself. Once she was on her feet, he nuzzled her neck and stepped back.

"Maybe if you try a few strong flaps rather than a bunch of crazy little ones. I'm sure you'll get it!"

---

Belenus snorted with laughter as his daughter bit the dust. Oh god. This was going to take forever.

His head was starting to hurt and he sighed.

"I'll be back!" he called out, watching as Helias nodded before stepping away. Some peace, quiet, and clear stream water would do him some good.

Where was Akane when he needed her?

Tears welled in Melitta's eyes before she wailed in pain as she hit her own leg with her forehoof and she frantically untangled herself. She did not pick herself up, however. Instead, she leaned her head against her brother's neck and sobbed into his mane.

"WHY DOES FLYING HURT?!" she demanded through sobs and sniffles. Wasn't she supposed to be good at it? She had wings after all! Just like...great grandma or something. It was in her blood?

"Why am I so bad at thiiis?" she sputtered through sobs.

Helias repressed a grimace as his father laughed at Melitta. She was only a foal, she needed guidance...Not his criticism. She was probably embarrassed that she had fallen and now she was getting laughed at.

He nodded to his father in hopes that acknowledgement would get him to go faster and was relieved he left before he could notice Mel sobbing into his shoulder. The foal sighed and nuzzled his baby sister before pulling away to look her in the eye.

"That was not flying, Mel. That was falling. It is a necessary part of learning. You don't suck at this, you are just new to it. Let's try again, okay? We will try together."

--------------------

Melitta hiccuped into her brother's main and looked him in the eye as he spoke. So many people around her lied but brother seemed to always be honest. She liked that about him. He didn't laugh when she fell.

Still, she would make daddy proud!

While she didn't fully believe what Helias was saying was the truth, she sniffled and nodded before the two of them took a running leap into the air.

Helias' powerful wings expanded and caught the air. He tucked his legs beneath him and flapped powerfully, making sure he had enough room so that he would not hit his sister. He needed more room with his powerful leathery wings than she did with her smaller ones.

"Come on, you can do it!" he cheered as he took flight, staying close to the ground in order to console his sister in case she needed it.

--

Melitta sniffled again as she leaped into the air. The little filly closed her eyes tight and scrunched up her face. She was determined and all of her muscles were taut with concentration.

Her little wings flapped vigorously and she braced herself for the inevitable fall...and...it didn't come. Mel hovered in the air, her hooves reaching for the ground that was not there. After a moment longer of not hitting the dirt, Mel opened a single eye. She was...in the air. She was...she was flying!
