The brown and gold lioness was in a sour mood and woe to whoever crossed her path. That damned captain had come back and while everyone lauded the loot he'd found, the fact was that he'd brought something else with him. Skinnende looked around surreptitiously to make sure she was alone. Good. Then the lioness sat down to do some furious scratching. Blood of her ancestors, these fleas were driving her insane! It was almost a shame that she wasn't a Reaver, as a viking might be able to distract her from the inane itching. On the other paw, she'd been told that a viking was as much about waiting as it was about action. Hmm...maybe not then. But augh, these bloody fleas! The lioness snarled as she persisted in trying to remove them from her person, oblivious to the world around her.

Death. Death to captains who came home infested with parasitic vermin. Couldn't the band have dunked themselves in the salty water and gotten rid of the fleas before coming back and sharing the "wealth" with the rest of the pride? Nakki would have loved to get her claws into those stupid reavers' hides.
She let out a half-shriek of frustration as she stopped in her path to rake viciously at an itchy spot behind her right ear with her hind paw. This was ridiculous. It wasn't as though the pride had been flea-free, although there certainly weren't a lot of them, given how the Stormborn seemed to submerge themselves in water at every opportunity, but this was really, really bad! And it was making Nakki's life wretched. She could hardly bear to be in another lion's company for fear of acquiring more of the bloodsuckers, and that was really putting a cramp in her husband-catching style.

Skinnende looked up, startled, at the unexpected noise. Turning, she saw a very dark lioness not too far away, scratching away vigorously. Well, she supposed it was nice to know she wasn't the only one suffering!
"He got you too, huh?" she called out, pausing in her own itching long enough to move to reasonable speaking distances. Not as close as she'd usually come for conversation, but who could blame her? She didn't want any additional passengers, and she was sure the other lioness felt the same way.
"Damned lion."

Nakki ceased her efforts and looking around for the speaker. There she was. Nakki couldn't say that she knew the lioness, but she was pretty sure she at least knew her name. Skinnende. She'd grown up in the pride, maybe? Nakki didn't usually spend a lot of time around other females, since she didn't see how that would help her find a husband. Most of the lionesses here seemed a lot prettier than Nakki was.
"Yes. The b*****d," Ordinarily she tried not to use language like that where she could be heard since it seemed proper Stormborn ladies didn't and she was doing her best to seem like one of those, but the occasion really seemed to warrant it.
"How did he get you? Directly or were you merely the victim of over-friendly friends?" Nakki frowned, realizing that was not the most sensical phrasing she could have used. Oh well.

"My sister," Skinnende grimaced. Her sister was ever so much more enamored of the returning Reavers than the brown lioness, and had insisted on being there when they got back. She'd come back to the family den and no one had even realized about the fleas until it was far too late.
"What about you?" The brown female wondered if the darker lioness would have any better reason than Drifa had. Then again, she didn't think too much of anyone who spent their time waiting around for the others to return. There was, as always, more than enough to do in the pride.

Nakki had sisters. Some of them had been all right and others had been wretched on occasion. None of them had ever given her parasites. Nevertheless, she grimaced in sympathy.
"Direct transmission, I'm afraid. I was among those greeting the reavers on their homecoming. I had no idea what I was getting myself into." She shook her head in disgust. She really had no reason to expect that she would be attacked by pernicious fleas. "I have been doing my best since then to keep away from people and avoid passing these horrid things on."
"Times like this, though, I almost wish I had an enemy. You know?"

Ah, so the other lioness had probably been there with Drifa and the others who...well, who seemed to have far too much time on their paws. Not that Skinnende would ever say as much aloud, especially not to her conversation partner, but that didn't stop her from thinking it.
"Now that is a shame," she commented instead, remarking on how awful it was that the idiot Captain hadn't even tried to protect the pride from himself. "At least you're being courteous about it."
She had to laugh, sharply and loudly, at the other's comment about an enemy. "That may be, but I don't know that I'd wish this...irritation...on anyone!"

She really did try to reduce her exposure to other people, mostly so they would not associate her with fleas. but it got boring to be on her own all the time, and when she went to get meat that the thralls brought back it was unavoidable. And it wasn't like she was going to hunt for herself. That was something she really loved about the Stormborn. Thralls did all the unpleasant work and a freeborn lioness such as her self could get away with doing absolutely nothing if she so chose.
"Oh, I don't know. Enemies. Rivals. Rivals especially, I think. They could be all itchy and twitchy and I - ideally - would be sitting cool and pretty and not itching. I can't imagine anything more satisfying." So Nakki was a petty b***h. Some people were like that. She was one of them.

Well, Skinnende couldn't say that it wasn't a view she hadn't heard before. Rather, it seemed to be a rather prevailing attitude. The brown lioness wasn't entirely certain that she approved, but what right did she have to pass judgment on other people's attitudes? She could simply choose how she lived her own life.
"I guess," she replied neutrally.
"Well, in the interest of not encouraging your fleas to jump ship to my fur, or vice versa, I should probably get going," Skinnende told the dark lioness. "It was nice talking to you, we'll have to do it again sometime when these pests are gone!"

Nakki recognized that neutral tone of voice. The one that told her she had said something wrong and in doing so made a bad impression on her interlocutor. She didn't really know what she had said this time, but she knew enough to take the out that was being offered before she actually managed to give offense.
"Good point," she agreed. With hope she added, "I would like that."
Because as easily as Nakki managed to leave people with less than favorable impressions, she was still a basically normal lioness who did not much care to be alone, and she felt like she had spent a great deal of time alone since coming to the Stormborn. It would be nice to make a friend. Or at least a friendly acquaintance.
She gave a polite nod and wished that she could come up with something traditional to say by means of farewell, but she could only come up with don't die in bed, which didn't seem appropriate for one lioness to tell another.
