Al was keen to take full advantage of the offer.
Nuru was already drawn as he hit the training field. He waited there impatiently for the fellow trainee to arrive and get this show on the road.
Al was already hungry.

Noah made a face at Al as he arrived to find Al waiting with Nuru already summoned. "Ready to get your butt kicked?" he teased, and summoned Lazarus. The cleaver's weight and shape were getting more comfortable as he got used to it, more like an extension of himself than an alien presence. That could be generalized to all of Laz, actually. The presence in his thoughts had felt intrusive at first, but he was getting used to the feeling of having the zombie dog waiting patiently just behind him.
It was still unnerving sometimes. But it was getting less weird.

"Bring it on!" Al embraced the trash talking with wide open arms. If he could hear Noah's thoughts, he would have agreed. He moved the staff behind himself in a low sweeping motion. Where it stopped and held in a position to lash out the second a body got in his way.
The weapon grumbled softly in approval.

BITE BITE BITE. Laz growled a low note of eager anticipation, focused and hungry. Noah moved in closer, keeping a wary eye on the way Al held Nuru ready to retaliate. He estimated how long Al's reach was, and darted forward in a burst of speed from just outside that distance, swinging Laz in a tight, controlled slice.
Lazarus growled and fed.

Just outside it. Not enough to avoid entirely as Al managed to stretch the weapon out enough just barely hit him as he fled backwards. His own slash still fresh in his mind.

The glancing blow brought a ferocious growl out of Laz, and Noah brought the cleaver down at the staff as Al swung. The blade skittered unevenly across the rough surface of the staff, and it felt almost like a shock had been delivered to Noah's arm. He shook his head and backed away, a little startled by the result.
"You better be on your game," he called, almost as an afterthought.

Al clenched his teeth as he felt the blade and the power behind it rake over every bump, nook, and cranny of Nuru's surface. The feeling was intense but he allowed it to wash over him... until it became too much.
He shifted his grip on Nuru and put his weight behind him as he pushed the gnarled weapon back against the blade in one sharp movement before retreating back again. He drew a deep careful breath as he braced himself for more.
"Always," Al replied with a challenging smirk.

Noah got the sense of a silent exchange of snaps and snarls, then Laz returned to growling low and wetly in his head. Noah tried another lunge, but he misjudged this time; the cleaver's blade swung wide, and Laz grumbled with dissatisfaction.
Noah recovered and stuck his tongue out at Al.

Al chuckled breathily at Noah's completely mature gesture.
Nuru was bristling eagerly in his mind now. These passing exchanges left him feeling more hungry than when they had started. No. Nuru needed the meat, his teeth bared and ready as he was swung out at Noah with Al's strength behind him. Teeth finally dug deeply into the fear shield in one swift crack. Violet runes lit up in a blaze of glory at the contact.

Noah stumbled back dizzily, swinging haphazardly at Al's arm as he did; the slice was barely a scratch, but Laz snarled in satisfaction as his runes lit pulsing white. I CAN FIX YOU NOW.
Wait, Noah answered. I'm still okay.

Al held Nuru firmly in Noah's direction as the runes pulsed with more and more violent light that seemed to abruptly drain into one location - the mouth - before bursting forth in an eruption that engulfed his opponent in flames. They dissipated as quickly as they emerged but the damage had been done. Nuru hungered for more.

It wasn't any easier to face fire washing over him the second time. Intellectually, Noah knew now that he wouldn't get burned until Lazarus's shield broke, but the instinctive flinch reaction remained automatic. Lazarus responded with a furious, bubbly growl, and as the fire flickered out, Laz's tongue flopped out of his hilt and coiled wetly around Noah's wrist. The runes flared bright white, and there was the weird sensation of damage being reversed.
I didn't tell you to do that now! Noah yelped silently.

Al braced himself, uncertain which way Noah was going to go after such a blast. Then his weapon moved and Al's heart skipped. God damn Noah, you are made of bricks aren't you?
He attempted to lash out too soon and his attack seemed to have no effect whatsoever.

Laz's tongue slithered back into the weapon's hilt, and Noah tried not to think about how creepy that was. He yelped and dodged as the staff swung right past his nose, but the attack helped snap him back to paying attention.
He danced a couple steps back, then lunged in again, swinging Laz at Al's leg. "You missed!"
