xxxxxxxxxV Who ┊ Katya Manning [THE SEMBLANCE OF UNITY] and Rabia Humayun [QUITE UNEVENTFUL]
xxxxxxxxxV Where ┊ Teufel Town General Hospital
xxxxxxxxxV When ┊ late afternoon on a blindingly sunny day
xxxxxxxxxV Why ┊ Katya has got a nasty bit of anemia and Rabia happens to need stitches
PostPosted: Thu Dec 05, 2013 10:35 am

It was the anemia that had finally sent her back to that hospital. For so long, Katya had avoided it, the hulking mass of white, or worse, foamy green walls. The hospital itself no longer frightened her, instead it reminded her of the things she dreamt at night, where the hospital turned into a menagerie of terror and swallowed her whole. But here she was, hooked up to an IV selected carefully to replenish lost vitamins. Her father had not come to see her. Katya was not surprised. Instead, she was bored and a little apprehensive.

The longer she laid in this room, the more it seemed as though it would come alive. Shivering, she stood, the sudden movement causing a wave of dizziness to wash over her. Grabbing the IV pole, she smoothed down her white dress and tentatively stepped into the hallway. As Katya left, she glanced back, heartbeat rising. Had something moved in the shadowed corner? She gulped and shut the door. Dragging her pole along as she walked, she debated trying to find the courtyard. Katya had no real aim in leaving her room, other than to occupy her mind.

Moving as quickly as possible, she walked the hallways. Most nurses did not look twice at her. After a while, she fancied herself one of the shadows of this hospital.

......Katya Manning..... paging Katya Manning.... please return to the nurses' station in B wing....

Well, the game was up now. Katya stuck her tongue out at the rudely loud intercom. The nurses remembered her wanderings when she was young, perhaps she should lead them on a merry chase again! Claire, the most strict nurse, poked her head down this hallway, clearly searching. If she found Katya, it would all be over. Katya turned and ran down the hall before slipping inside a door. Breathing heavily, she sank to the floor. She still wasn't up to this.

"Ugh," she groaned, rubbing at the dark circles under her eyes. Abruptly, she realized the room was occupied. Expecting the worst, she slowly scooted around on her bottom. Huh. It was just another girl. What should she say? What if she said the wrong thing? Katya's eyes widened dramatically, unfocusing. Finally, she squeaked out the first coherent thought to pop in her mind.

"H-hi. Um.... t-the doors here sure are sturdy."

The track here in Teufel town was way more complicated than the one in Lahore. The one in Lahore was just a straight track going in a circle, no creativity whatsoever, but the one over here- Allah, that track was a RUSH! Twists and long turns, obstacles... Rabia Humayun couldn't help but sigh in excitement, mouth curving into a small smile remembering how many times she imagined herself riding on that track. And then she finally did it. After begging the boss(whom she was on good terms with), she was allowed a free ride around the course. She strapped herself in, made sure everything was running properly, and... ZOOM! Just a tiny step on the pedal made the car go way faster, giving her a rush. She screamed out of happiness, hands firmly on the wheel, letting herself melt into the car seat with guilty pleasure.

Although she did have experience with go-karts, this one was almost completely different from the ones she used to. Swerves made her crash almost every time she turned, and just pushing the gas made it go faster than she thought it could ever go. She didn't feel anything other than the thrill of the ride. Rabia couldn't hold her excitement, laughing out of enjoyment— until she reached the end. She couldn't get out. Not that she wouldn't— she couldn't. She felt faint and almost passed out in the middle of it all. She had to be lifted out— the last thing she remembered was her coworker calling yelling at someone to call the hospital.

And then she woke up here. Turned out she had passed out due to a long cut on her left leg reaching from her knee to a little above her ankle. A loose piece in the vehicle had gone ballistic, and she didn't even feel it. Now she had stitches on her leg. She really needed to learn to calm down... They changed her clothes to the uncomfortable dress and sewed her shut while she was still knocked out, and that was good— she didn't think she could handle seeing blood. Her boss was taking full responsibility for her, going as far as to even pay the hospital bills. She almost insisted she could take care of it, but remembered... She didn't have her fathers credit card this time. She left it with him and his so called "family" back in Pakistan. A sigh escaped Rabia's pursed, pale lips. She must've looked like a mess— but she didn't care at the moment. Where were her things? Her bag? At least her phone would be something...

Turning to look around the room, she realized her stuff was on the table to the right of her, along with another bag, one she recognized to be her brother's. He must be here, maybe he went outside or something? She flipped over in the bed, pressing her head against the cold metal of the bedpost. How much time had passed? Rabia eyed the wall to the left of her, sighing when she saw the bright orange color on the hospital walls. Afternoon. Not too long ago. Turning around in the bed again, she lay with her eyes staring at the ceiling with a bored expression. Allah, she was so bored. Was there anything to do in a hospital like this but slowly loose your mind? She groaned and turned on to her right side, laying in the bed with the intention of falling asleep, to try and do something. She couldn't get up, and the more she tried to move her leg, the more it hurt. Rabia rubbed one of her eyes. Who was she kidding. She wasn't going to sleep!

Fumbling with the bed sheets, the redhead stared at the ceiling once more, lip pouting. In the background, an announcement echoed throughout the hallways of the hospital, something about a girl to return to the nurses station. Rabia didn't give it much thought. At that very moment, the door clicked open, followed with heavy breathing. Rabia sighed, sitting uip in bed, eyes closed and hands rubbing her temples. "Castro, thank Allah you're here, I was so bor—" At this moment, she opened her eyes. "—ed?" Rabia blinked. Then blinked again. A young girl with messy, light green hair sat on the floor, exhausted. Rabia almost ahem-ed to get her attention. Who the hell was this? That sure was one way to make an entrance. The girl turned around, looking a bit embarrassed. Her acid green eyes widened, and Rabia almost thought she was going to throw up. When she hesitantly spoke to her, pointing out a somewhat obvious fact, Rabia blinked, staring at her with a confused look.

"Hey stranger." Rabia responded, looking at the door and then back at her. She seemed a bit awkward. "What brings you to my..." She looked around, scrunching her nose— "...hospital room?" Bringing her eyes back to settle on the girl, she looked her up and down. She was a hospital patient, like her, and looked like she was running from something. Was this the girl the announcement was looking for? Catija, or something? She looked like a deer in headlights. "Are you the girl the intercom just called for? You look like you've been running."

In that moment, that exact space between the last syllable flying from her lips and her next shallow breath, Katya wished the floor would swallow her whole. She felt her skin flush and her muscles tense. Oh no, you said something stupid. You miserable failure. No, no. You can do this this! Those first words had been a screw-up for sure, Katya could not afford another. The thought of being hated even by someone she did not know terrified her. Taking a large, gut-wrenching gulp, Katya opened her mouth.

And closed it.

And opened it again. A cascade of tremors wracked her slim body. Gaze darting about wildly, she blinked, deliberately fixing it on unknown shadows, subconsciously searching for her dreams. Katya was nervous, even more so because this was the hospital. This was the day-lit, supposedly horror-free version of her nightmares. Forcibly, she raised her eyes to the other girl, realizing belatedly that she still sprawled on the ground. The IV pole shuddered as she pulled herself upright. Had the other girl called her strange? Flushing a deeper red, she bit her tongue and admitted the girl was likely right.

"I-I'm Katya. S-so sorry for barging in! I was j-just.... I don't like this place much, so I ran. I used to hide from the nurses all the time, you s-see, as a sort of game." Her hand twisted around the metal pole as she spoke. But her words came more and more easily. The other girl had red hair, she noted, looking at her directly for the first time. It was the red of sunsets, of playground scrapes and warm clay. A small tentative smile stole across her face, lighting her eyes. "I was wondering.. c-can I hide here for a bit? I think they spotted me." Her voice lowered to a conspiratorial whisper and she mentally patted herself on the back. Six whole sentences to a stranger! As if on cue, a nurse called out down the hallway. "Katya? Katya Manning; I know you're here!"

Goodness this girl was adorable! She looked like she actually thought she would sell her out, all nervous and red-faced. Rabia mentally shook her head. This girl really needed to work on her people skills. She could literally see the insults she was telling herself slide onto her pained face, and although Rabia wanted to interject, she didn't know how. Either way, it wasn't like she knew this girl well enough.

Rabia held in a chuckle. With her mouth opening and closing like that, it made her look like a machhli* with no air. She looked like she wanted to say something, but then couldn't. For what reason? Rabia was curious... Ai devtaa mere*, this girl was even shaking. Giving her a mischievous smile, the fiery redhead decided to play around with the girl a bit. When the girl stood up, she pursed her lips together purposefully, as if not impressed with her little entrance. Raising an eyebrow at her words, Rabia heard her out.

Katya. Oh. She really needed to learn to hear names better. A wide smile broke her unimpressed charade, and she finally let herself chuckle. "Hello, Katya. Don't worry about..." Rabia paused, thinking for a word... But not being able to find it. Instead, she quickly used another word: "—barging in." She winked at her in a 'don't worry, I'll keep your secret' way, and giggled. Nodding her head in sympathy, the Pakistani female grinned. "It's... understandable. Places like these would give anyone the creeps. Myself included," The red head admitted, putting a hand over her chest and giving a sincere smile.

"Of course you can hide here." Rabia stated in an excited voice— "Though you might want to find where to hide. I think she might be opening the doors to check if you've busted in anywhere." Which was funny, because she actually did. She looked at the closet on the side. It must've been empty, as she wasn't a stay-the-night patient. "Gimmie your IV pole— I'll make it look like it's mine." She didn't need one after all, so she didn't have hers connected to her. Instead it was near the wall, covered by the closet's large exterior. Nodding toward the closet, she smiled. "Go hide in there for a bit, I'll call you when she's out. Or..." She paused, then looked around a bit more, "As you seem to know your way around here, what place would you hide in?"

Rabia looked back at the young girl's hesitant face and sighed with a smile. "Calm down, Katya! I won't bite you." At this, she bared her teeth playfully. "My name is Rabia Humayun. Now hurry!" She whispered, "She's coming!"

Katya's pale eyes flickered to the red-head, waiting for the inevitable awkward silence. In her mind, past the nerves, past the sinking feeling, she knew this was an opportunity. Another girl, close to her in age... could this be the beginning of her normal high school life? Not if she kept screwing this up. The other girl's voice was pleasant though, almost soothing.

"N-need m'I.V, pole, though." she mumbled, holding up one arm. The skin around the needle was bruised and thin. Katya took a deep breath and counted 1-2-3. When she spoke again, her words were clearer, and a small smile accompanied them. "Thank you, R-rabia. Closet good. I-I didn't hide there last time." Katya moved, a burst of motion and purpose. Opening the closet door, she stretched up and snapped a folded sheet open. The closet, even though empty, had been used as storage. Several folded sheets lined the shelf and stacked neatly in one corner. An extra I.V. pole was actually in the closet as well, along with a side tray for the bed. Katya turned to Rabia and gave her a hesitant thumbs up before steeping into the closet. She pulled the door closed and carefully squeezed behind the tray, draping the sheet over her.

Two brisk knocks sounded on the door. "Ms. Humayun?" The door opened and a nurse entered. Her name tag read "Kensey"and she smiled warmly, although there was a harried look around her dark eyes. "Have you by chance seen a small girl with pale skin and blond hair?" Her hand hovered around Katya's height. As she spoke, Nurse Kensey walked further into the room, purple scrubs swishing slightly, and peered under the bed. Her braids swung wildly and she quickly snapped a rubber band around them.
