The golems were functional again, but something had gone wrong somewhere; Ferros was still unsettled by the alterations. The golem body's build seemed lighter and more streamlined than it normally did, perhaps more delicate, if that could be said of riveted, jointed metal, but it was the extra attachments that were really unnerving. While they weren't visible beneath the trousers and vest, their presence was confusing and faintly alarming, and Ferros really didn't quite know what any of them did. Also, he felt vaguely like he ought to be she at the moment. He'd never been strongly attached to the pronouns, picking the masculine forms mostly on impulse. It hadn't mattered. It probably still didn't, but she still felt weird about it. She'd been in the pod room, though not for long. Answering questions about what she was doing there without her hunter would be awkward. It wasn't as though she'd wanted to be out for long, really, but when the use of the golem cost in runestones, she wasn't entirely comfortable with returning immediately, either. She'd assured Jordan that she was okay, though it had taken some convincing. It was difficult to be inconspicuous when you were nearly seven feet tall, and after a few odd looks, she opted to leave the labs for the training fields. She could destroy a few dummies, perhaps. That wouldn't require anything special, just the heavy claws she'd been built with. ((Using the genderswap golem prompt~))

Despite very clearly being told that the fields were training fields, it had taken this long for Thackery to put two and two together and realize that this was kind of like their version of the stuff in the gym. He didn't do much of the 'sparring' thing that some of his classmates did, and was probably headed for an abysmal grade in gym, but he knew enough - now that he knew the context, at least - to recognize the intended use of the training dummies that were lined up for use across the field. His promise not to hurt anyone didn't extend to any things, he guessed, but he was still being very careful, just in case. The boil opted to remain in his humanoid form as he barked and swatted at one of the forms, barely making it move. It was a laughable sight. The 'extensive training' continued until he caught a glimpse of someone approaching, ears perking when he stopped to get a better look. Were there even more students on this island? How had he not noticed when they went missing? Or had they come over sometime after he had? "Hey!" he called, crouching into a playful stance that looked much more sensible in his canine form. "Are you gonna play with the fake humans too? Is that why you came here? What's your name? My name is Thackery, and I'm behaving! Also, the fake humans are fun to play with, if you were wondering!"

Ferros recognized Thackery, of course, but it was natural that he wouldn't recognize her, not in this shape. The disappointment didn't make sense. She was a little surprised that he didn't have a handler attending him. "I'm Ferros. I came out to hit the dummies, but you probably shouldn't," she replied, tilting her head a little to angle her mouth into a smile. "If they see you swatting something shaped like a human, they might not like it. Are you bored? I can stay out a while longer."

Pleased that they were actually having a conversation, Thackery beamed over at Ferros, tail wagging. It didn't last for long; his cheerful expression momentarily faltered into confusion as he was told that he shouldn't be hitting these, then turned to one of horror when his new friend explained. "Oh Jack, I didn't mean to--I mean, I...I--oh no, you don't think they're mad at me, do you?" He put his hands on his head in a panic. "I was just trying to find something to do that would be okay to do! 'Cause I am bored, to answer what you asked. I hope I didn't get her in trouble...oh, hey, did she tell you to tell everyone Mark let you out too?"

Ferros shook her head, her red glass eyes flickering in a startled blink. "Nobody is mad. I am just walking because I do not want to be in the labs with techs looking at me funny. Who is the she that you're referring to? Am I assuming right, that you are a visitor and not a weapon now, Thackery?" Her head tilted a little sideways, and a ripple ran down her heavy tail. "Mark did not let me out. My hunter did. I won't be out very long, because I don't like it when I can't hear him and I don't have another reason to be out right now, past testing golems."

The sigh of relief that Thackery let out probably looked a bit excessive, but it was fairly accurate to the way that he felt. Ensuring that none of the Hunters got mad at him was the most important thing right now, which included actively avoiding getting the nice lady into trouble. Even if she wouldn't be mad, someone else possibly would. " Phew. I'm trying real hard to stay out of trouble and show them I'm good!" He smiled, head held high. "You're right, though. I'm visiting for a while! I dunno when I'm s'posed to go home. The lady--I mean...Mark? Um...well, anyway, I know what you mean I think, when you say how you don't like to be where you can't hear your Hunter. It doesn't feel so good to not be able to hear someone who is important. I kinda wish I had that all the time too." The smile faded, and he fell silent for a moment, before perking up again without warning. "Heeeey..." He tilted his head from one side to the other, and repeated this motion several times before speaking again. "Do I know you? From before now, I mean, 'cause now I know you!"

Ferros nodded solemnly. "I was asleep for a while once, and he was very, very upset," she said. "I was sorry I could not be there to help." She tilted her head in an echo of Thackery's gesture. "You know me, but you do not know you know me," she said. "When you have seen me, I have been a hammer. I am Jordan's weapon. The Blue King's advisor," she added, to clarify.

"I know how that feels too, kinda." Thackery chewed his lip and fidgeted, hoping that nobody was in too much trouble back home. He still couldn't really tell, among all the other anxieties that arose while worrying over all his new friends. "I mean, I'm not asleep, but I'm not there to help if they need me, and--" Then the second half of the answer registered, and his mood switched in an instant again, expression back to a smile. He hopped towards Ferros and flung his arms around the golem, laughing cheerfully. "Oh my Jaaack, sorry I didn't recognize you! Wow! Everything was so different in the kingdoms, huh? How're you doing? How's Jordan? How's the Blue King?" There were a thousand other questions that came to mind, but he held back for the moment, opting for just a couple more. "Is everyone okay? Is everyone happy?"

Ferros blinked in surprise and awkwardly, carefully folded her arms around Thackery, patting him gently on the back. "I did not expect you to recognize me. This is a weapons golem. It lets me use the body I had before I was a weapon, for a short time. Though there is something a little wrong with it today; usually I am closer to male. Do not hurt yourself. I have hard edges," she said. "We are well enough." She hesitated, considering how much of the current situation she should tell him. "Their mate has been ill," she settled on, "so we have been worried, but he will be well soon. Tracey will heal him. We keep our Hunters healthy," she added, with a note of pride in her voice.

Miraculously, despite his enthusiastic hug, Thackery managed to avoid hurting himself on the hard edges that Ferros warned him about. He pulled away and bounced on his toes as he listened, happy to hear the updates. "That's super neat! But, well, good thing I didn't recognize you then, 'cause that would have been like...maybe I had some kind of reaaally weeeird dream where you looked like this instead, and also we hung out!" He wiggled his fingers to show how mysterious that would be, to prove that it definitely didn't happen. "I'm glad everyone is mostly okay! I'm sorry their mate is sick, though. I hope he gets better soon." His nose scrunched up as he thought, deeply considering something. "How long's it take to help heal them? Like...what kinda help can you give? Can you really help fix everything that makes them feel bad?" Eyes suddenly wide, he shook his head. "I don't mean that I don't believe you! I just really wanna know about it, that's all."

Ferros blinked again, trying to untangle the threads of Thackery's statements in a way that made sense to her. She wasn't entirely sure she was following what he meant, but the good wishes at least she understood, and nodded to accept them. "Thank you." "I will have to explain a little to explain that," she said, and folded herself down to sit on the ground with a creak of metallic joints. She curled her tail comfortably around her legs. "When we bond with our hunters, our Fear weaves into their bodies. We use their senses, we hear their thoughts and feelings, and we feel their pain and joy. Humans heal much more slowly than Fear creatures do, but when they bond with weapons, our Fear speeds their healing. If it is a close bond, the healing is faster and more complete, because we are a deeper part of them. When Jordan has gotten hurt, if we rest and I don't have to pay attention to anything else, I can help it along and he will feel better sooner." She tilted her head. "Humans are fragile, but Hunters use our Fear shields and do not get so hurt so easily."

Things that required explanations were a bit hit and miss for Thackery, but he was happy for the fact that this meant their conversation was lengthened, if only slightly. He plopped down next to Ferros, widely grinning while he soaked the information in. It made sense, for the most part, even though it took a little while for him to get through it all. "So...you can hear their thoughts and feel their happy, but can you share how happy you are, too? Like when they're sad, can you make them feel better? If you're happy enough for them, do they ever have to be sad again?" Maybe Hunters didn't get physically hurt so easily, but he didn't think that extended to feelings - not from what he knew, at least. "And you and Jordan must have a really good bond, right? Did it take a long time, or were you always friends?"

"Our minds are together," Ferros explained. "He still feels his own feelings, but I can help him calm down if he needs to calm down, most of the time." She paused, thinking over what she wanted to say. "Some terrible things have happened to us, and sometimes I need to remind him that we are in the real world and he is okay. But I do help. I can feel it. We're very close," she said, with a note of pride in her voice. "We're two halves. Not one, but not quite two any more." Her tail thumped on the ground with a rattle of joints. "We have had two and a half years to bond, and when he trains every day we bring our minds closer so that we can be a good pair. I chose him because he is strong and persistent. We have been friends from the start." She tilted her head, the glow in her eyes muting. "Some weapons do not like their Hunters. I don't understand that. Why would you choose a human you could not like? It does not make a good strong bond, and we are in their minds until death. I could not be bonded to someone I did not like."

"Huh? Remind him that you're in the real world?" Thackery tilted his head to match Ferros. "Does terrible stuff happen in different places, like the time we were kings, or is it terrible stuff for real that makes it seem otherwise?" He clearly did not choose his words as carefully as his current partner in conversation did. "I dunno why anyone would want to pick someone they didn't like either...I guess I understand picking someone who doesn't like you, 'cause sometimes you care about someone who doesn't feel the same way back, but it doesn't make sense to me to do it the other way." A startled gasp cut through his words, and he put one hand over his mouth as he tried to put the sudden concern into words. "Wait...do weapons happen from some of us who want Hunters to die?" It looked like the idea alone was painful to him - his eyes were a bit more glassy than normal, and he'd stopped wiggling and wagging his tail so much.

"We can handle the terrible stuff in other places a little better." Ferros puffed a wisp of steam from the pipes on her shoulders. "Terrible stuff that happens here is harder." "I think so, yes," she said, the angle of her mouth taking on a troubled cast. "Some weapons do not like humans much at all. I like being a weapon, I am a good weapon," she added quickly. "Sometimes I would wish to talk to others more easily, but mostly I do not mind, and Jordan is good about saying what I have asked him to say for me. Though sometimes they do not believe that he has told the truth about what I have said."
