The trees surrounded her, great and towering and green. It was the first time she had set foot in the forest; Del's parents were having some alone time, and she was in the mood for exploring - plus, she was old enough now that they'd let her go by herself. Fluttering her wings anxiously as she tried to decide what direction to go, Del grinned. The ocean still crashed behind her, familiar and soothing, reminding her of the whirlpool she'd seen this morning. She spun on the spot, just like that whirlpool, and closed her eyes. The ocean could choose her direction for her.

When she opened her eyes again and looked around, Del frowned. She was facing back toward the beach, the great blue-gray expanse opening up in the distance beyond the scrubby, sharp-edged plants that bordered the shore. "Well, that's no fun," she said, mostly to herself. The word sounded funny coming out of her mouth, like it didn't belong in the air without anyone else to hear it. Shutting her mouth again, she turned back around.

There it was again, the great green forest, staring down at her. It loomed over her like a shadow, but somehow it was welcoming and foreboding at the same time. She took a step forward, her little blue hoof harshly contrasted against the dark, moss-covered ground and decaying leaves. It's a step in the right direction, she told herself, using the phrase that she'd heard her mother say when she did something that was almost right. Taking another step, Del glanced around again. Nobody was hiding behind the trees, at least as far as she could see. It was strange - for some reason, she'd always thought of the woods as being populated... She'd always imagined that her beach-dwelling family lived on the outskirts of some great society, teeming with life, that was just beyond the edge of the trees. Instead, all she heard was birdsong and squirrels chattering angrily at her. Maybe I'm not far enough in, she thought, and took a couple more steps.
