Sundays without a fail were swim days for Briar, with him almost always down at the pool. It was nice on a Sunday, devoid of the crowds that seemed to hang around the leisure centre where the pool was housed during the week and incidentally just the way Briar liked it. The pool had been equally quiet - no more than three people in there, although one had left not long after Briar had arrived. He'd ended up spending the afternoon there, lazily doing a few laps on his back and playing with the frog-shaped pool floats, eventually however, the free swim period had come to an end and Briar had reluctantly called it a day, waving at the pool guy on duty as he headed to the changing room to change. Both his parents were still working and it was early enough that Briar didn't particularly want to head straight home and so he turned right instead of the left that lead towards home, heading towards the little bakery up the road from the leisure centre. He had a little money on him and knew that they'd still be open, if he was lucky then maybe they would even still have cookies. Quicksilver the Archangel

litian So sorry, lit - I thought I had replied to this! At the bakery, a small Himalyan was balancing on her hind paws, her teal eyes wide as she stared into the window. Her front paws were pressed earnestly against the glass, as much as any human child's might be at a candy shop or a toy store where something they really, really wanted was inside. Her fluffy tail wagged lightly back and forth, the black and white checkered flag attached there fluttering cooperatively as well. How could she get in? How? How? How?!See, her keen nose never lied. There was salmon in there. The sign in the window confirmed it - it advertised bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Apparently it was some sort of new promotion, and the Mauvian wanted to be the very first customer to try it. The problem was that the bakery door was a round knob, not a push door. Knobs were hard to turn when one was as small as Horatio was - push doors, fine, long handles, fine, round knobs? Really hard. Her ears flicked towards the sound of footsteps, and when Horatio turned her head she saw what could very well be her salvation! With the speed that she prided herself on, she sprinted over to the boy and began to rub coyly against his legs. Maybe he could help her inside!

It would have been hard to miss the sign advertising the bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, given how large the thing thing was although Briar wasn't interested in bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon, more interested in whether the little bakery had any cookies left than in some promotion. As he walked up towards the bakery, it was easy to see that there were plenty of the cream cheese and smoked salmon bagels and Briar could even spot the rolls and a couple of pies, there were no cookies however - or at least none that he could spot at the distance he was up. He decided to walk up to the window and have a closer look - maybe there would be one or two left over and put to the side or something and if he was really lucky then maybe they would even be chocolate chip ones. At any rate Briar knew that unless he checked then he wouldn't know for sure and he really wanted to know for sure because if there were cookies left then he was buying them - or at least if he had enough change for them he was. He'd gotten about halfway when he was distracted by the feel of something rubbing against his legs, his reddish eyes looking down only to spot a small cream coloured kitten? Well it looked like a kitten to him - a kitten with weird goggles that kind of looked like candy and a chequered flag on its tail. Bending down he held out his fingers out to the kitten, having read somewhere that sometimes cats sniffed fingers to see if they could trust people, commenting as he did so "I don't know what you're going out here kitty and your goggles are kind of strange, but you have the coolest tail flag." And it was - cool that was and just like the ones that racing drivers had. Quicksilver the Archangel np, sorry for taking so long myself

Horatio eagerly sniffed at the boy's fingers, more for appearance's sake than anything. She was a pretty friendly Mauvian--some might say overly friendly--and any opportunity to make a new friend was a good one. Today it was down right lucky. Surely the nice child on his way down the street would rescue a starving kitty. ... okay, so maybe she wasn't starving, but there was salmon and she had to have it! The misunderstanding about her goggles was sort of made better by his compliment of her tail flag - but at the same time, her goggles were just as awesome as anything else! She rubbed up against his hand, demanding strokes as penance, as she mewed defensively, "My goggles are racing goggles! It's so dirt and bugs and stuff don't get in my eyes while I'm zipping around. They're really handy in the rain, too, even if they get a little foggy." It didn't bother her at all to be chatting with her new friend, and she tilted her head towards the window. "In there, they've got salmon on bagels. I'm trying to figure out a way to get in so I can get one. Can you open the door for me?"

Briar had been half-wondering whether the kitten would let him stroke him, when the kitten suddenly spoke. The voice, the very female voice causing him to start backwards a little so that he ended up going from crouching to sitting as he stared at the 'kitten' with startled reddish eyes. "You just talked" he said, his eyes wide beneath his golden coloured wire-rimmed glasses. "Does that make you a magic cat like Carbonel?" he'd recently read about Carbonel from a book that he'd borrowed from the library, adding curiously. "And if you are shouldn't you be able to um magic the door open or something?" Briar never met a talking cat before - but the ones in books seemed to be able to do magical things so surely opening a door shouldn't be too hard. Quicksilver the Archangel

"I did just talk, and I am a magical cat, but I don't know anyone named Carbonel. I'm Horatio. Hi!" She grinned up at him and gave another wave of her tail flag, since she knew that he liked it. "Who are you? We match because we both have eye gear, did you notice? That's pretty cool!" At his question about doors, she switched gears. "I can open doors, but that's because of physical dexterity and luck, not my magic." The Mauvian jerked her head back towards the knob in question and explained. "See how round it is? Super hard to grip when you don't have proper fingers. I can do latch handles because I can jump up and use my stomach to press down on it, and I can do push doors because, well, I can push them. But spheres? Super, super hard. And I don't have any magic that can give me fingers. ... I think?" Something about the statement seemed off, but the Himalayan did a quick double check by wiggling the toes on her paws. Nope, no fingers there! Her teal eyes sparkled as her forehead star began to glow. "If I show you some magic, will you get me a salmon bagel? I can do all sorts of stuff, like shoot a forehead beam but it makes me pretty tired. I can check to see if you're a winner though, and if you are, I can use my magic on you! What do you say? Fair deal?"

"Me? Oh I'm Briar" Briar said, although he couldn't help but smile as Horatio waved her tail flag at him - seriously the thing was neat. He thought about it and then added "Nice to meet you Horatio. Your name's pretty neat as well." Almost as neat as Carbonel and yes he was feeling disappointed, just a little at the fact that Horatio didn't seen to know Carbonel. Briar had read most of the Carbonel stories and Horatio was a talking cat just like Carbonel was supposed to be. Besides Carbonel was also supposed to be the Prince of Cats and Briar would have liked to meet a Prince of Cats - especially since given that Horatio was here and talking to him so talking magical cats were obviously real - unlike Santa and the Tooth Fairy who were just his Mummy and Daddy making things up or in the case of Santa people dressed up in red suits and fake beards. He looked at Horatio considering at her offer to show him magic in exchange for a salmon bagel, thinking over her offer - he really, really wanted a cookie, maybe even more than just one cookie if they had more and he didn't have enough for both the bagel and any potential cookies. On the other hand however Horatio was offering to show him real, live magic like the stories and he really wanted to see the magic too - especially if it was as neat as the forehead beam sounded. Eventually however the wish to see the magic won out over Briar's wish to get himself a cookie as he looked at Horatio and said gravely "Deal." Sacrificing cookies was a big deal, but getting to see real live magic would be much more awesome. Super awesome in fact. Quicksilver the Archangel

A grin spread across Horatio's face as Briar accepted her offer. The little ginger was a smart cookie, as far as she was concerned - knew a cool name when he heard one, was willing to deal for magic, and cute as a button too! "Alright, let's go!" The Himalayan trotted over to the alley way that connected to the side of the bakery. She often came here to revel in the delicious smells and sometimes to steal the heat that radiated from the ovens. It was a good stopping spot on a cold winter's day, but really she was the only one usually there. Which just made it all the better a place for it! "Okay, Briar, now what I'm going to do is put a paw on your chest and feel to see if you're a winner. You might feel something warm and fuzzy. ... well, besides me. Catch!" With only that warning, she made a mighty leap directly for the boy's arms. She could almost taste that delicious salmon now! Sharing it would a new friend would just make it twice as delicious.

Part of Briar had kind of expected Horatio to start performing the promised magic then and there, but he had followed after her obligingly enough as she trotted towards the alleyway by the side of the bakery. Baking was over for the day, but Briar could still smell bread intermixed with cake smells from the spot where Horatio had picked to stop, his reddish eyes puzzled beneath his glasses as he tried to work out how putting a paw on his chest would determine whether he was a winner and what that had to do with the whole promised magic thing anyway. She was already jumping before he could ask her however and Briar awkwardly moved to try and catch her, relieved when she managed to land in his arms and keeping his grip as gentle as he could as he waited to see what would happen next. The confident little Himalayan was not the least bit worried that her diminutive partner would drop her. He was a smart kid, all shock of red hair and brainy specs, and willing to trade smoked fish for magic. She curled up against his chest and squinted her eyes into little lines of teal. It took a bit of concentration to find winners, although she never thought about it much. She just reached out and felt around and-- There it was. Small, and bright, and warm and just… waiting. Waiting for her to come and tag it. Best. Game. Ever! “Congratulations, Briar! You’re absolutely, positively one hundred percent a winner. That means not only do you get to see magic, but you get some nifty prizes!” With the same speed and agility she had used to jump into his arms, she now leapt back down. She made a speedy sprint down part of the alley, and two objects clattered out behind her. One was a henshin pen and the other a cell phone. Horatio pawed both towards the boy as though she was smacking a hockey puck across ice as she mewled, “Mkay, so first thing. Take the pen there and hold it above your head. Then say ‘Oort Power, Make-Up!’ Trust me, it’s awesome!”

Horatio was a little bundle of weight against his chest and although he had no idea of what she was doing or what she was looking for, Briar didn't find the weight unwelcome - especially since she was warm with it. And then for a moment he thought he felt it, a warm fuzziness that was over almost as soon as he registered it, leaving Briar if he had really felt it, especially as at that moment Horatio was suddenly talking about winners before jumping to the ground and talking about magic and prizes as she dashed further down into the alley. There was a sudden clatter followed by two objects being sent whizzing in his direction. One looked like a cell phone, but the other was a pen? Briar peered at it closer, yep definitely a pen - kind of oversized and one with some sort of symbol etched into the top that looked kind of like a key. He felt a little disappointed though as it was still a pen nonetheless though and not really what he'd been expecting even if Horatio had made it suddenly appear out of seemingly nowhere. But she was still giving instructions, so maybe the pen did more than just write stuff, like shooting beams or something like Horatio said her star did. It was with that thought in mind that he reached for the pen and as instructed held it above his head before calling out "Oort Power, Make-Up!" There weren't any beams but there were sparkles and lights - lots and lots of lights and when they all finally faded away there was a new senshi staring wide-eyed at the pen in his hand. "Wow that was cool!" He breathed, the over-sized pen suddenly gaining a bit more respect in his eyes. Chibi Sailor Oort had awakened. Quicksilver the Archangel sorry again for the slowness Quick

The Himalayan sat, proud as any feline who had caught a mouse or a bird as she watched the henshin process take place. She really needed to keep a tally board of all of her successes so that she could show them off to everybody, but at the moment Briar's fascination was reward enough. There was no denying the excitement on the boy's face, and that made her grin excitedly too. "I know, right? I never, ever get tired of waking up winners because they always have something cool to show me and o-m-g there are keys on your sash." Horatio got distracted by the dangling metal objects almost immediately, stretching her paws out so that the lightly colored toes batted at them. Her eyes swang from side to side as she followed it, but her mouth never stopped moving either. "So I'm guessing you've got lots of questions, right? Well, if you don't, you should, and I've got lots of answers besides." She continued to paw at the keys as she mewled, "So, what do you wanna know about magic? I know all kinds of things. Like, you're Oort, Chibi Senshi of Keys, and your attack power is Oort Key Up, and... well, lots of stuff. Oh, and don't forget the phone--that's how you call for help if you need it!"

Between the whole sparkles and light thing and the excitement of seeing magic first-hand, Briar who was now Oort had actually forgotten about the cell phone, but he bent down to scoop it up after Horatio mentioned it. "So me being like this - does it means I'm like a superhero? Like in the stories?" he asked as he glanced at the cell phone in his hand before looking at Horatio. He'd never had a cell phone before. His parents did and his big brother did and he'd wanted one since his brother's phone could do neat things like play games, but both his parents had been pretty firm on the fact that he had to wait until he was bigger, even though he was plenty big now and all of 11 "And is Oort like one of those super secret identities or something?" After all Horatio had just called him Oort, Chibi Senshi of Keys and although the newly awoke Oort had no idea what a chibi senshi was - he'd read enough stories about magic and watched enough stuff about superheroes on TV to know that superheroes had to have a super secret identity even if the magic-doing people in the tales didn't always have one. "And is attack power like magic? Does this mean I can do magic beyond the sparkly stuff?" The fact that he got to have a cell phone of his own was neat enough but that plus magic? Oort might not have been a senshi for long but he was already liking it and it was definitely worth losing cookies over. Quicksilver the Archangel He's actually the senshi of keys rather than locks xD and Horatio probably should never have mentioned beams since he's picturing some sort of beam thing :3

litian I made the change to the sphere! Also, Horatio will totally show him her beam in exchange for carrying her home (and the already promised salmon bagel). Horatio wanted those keys with every joule of her energetic being. Having them dangling just out of reach was too much of a temptation, so her paws continued to reach for them. She could hear her newly awakened winner asking question after appropriate question, though, and her tiny heart swelled with pride. Key game would have to wait until she finished her favorite game of fill-in-the-Senshi! The Himalayan plopped her paws back firmly on the ground to keep still as she cheerfully replied, "Well, I dunno which particular stories, but you are most definitely a super hero! You get a neat costume and a new name and an attack and you get to fight monsters, it's pretty awesome! There's loads of other Senshi and Knights and even other kitties like me for you to play with, so you're gonna be part of the winning team right out the gate." An itch overtook her ear and was immediately scratched with her hind leg. It jiggled her goggles down over her eyes, but that she didn't mind so much as evident by her continued tlaking. "Oort's... uh... well, sort of? It's complicated. Oort is you, and you are Oort, but Oort is also the place from which you get all your nifty powers and somewhere you were a long, long time ago. So it's a secret identity but also more than that. While you ave on your fuku--that's the fancy name for your costume--nobody'll know your real face, though! So it totally does act like a secret identity that way, in keeping you and your family's identities safe." She ceased her scratching and began to bounce excitedly. Magic was always fun. "Sure can! Not quite sure what it does but... say Oort Key Up' and let's see what we get! I'll show you my kitty beam, too, so you know what it looks like."

Although a lot of Horatio's said made sense, parts of it, in particular the part around Oort being somewhere that he'd been in the past, was confusing. Despite that Oort had managed to glean that he apparently really was a superhero now and just like the superheroes in the cartoons he had his very own superhero outfit and super secret identity. Plus it was good to know that he was on the winning side given that it was no fun being a loser and that as an added plus (and in Oort's book it was a major plus) the winning side seemed to have other talking cats just like Horatio. He listened carefully as Horatio talked about how to use his magic as he wanted to make sure he got it right, not sure how keys would help him fight monsters but picturing something awesome like the mentioned kitty beam. Once Horatio had finished with her explanation however, Oort didn't immediately move to try out his magic but instead asked "And if I need to stop being Oort and turn back then how do I do it?" Since it had suddenly occurred to him that he still owed Horatio her bagel and the money to buy it was in his pocket - Briar's pocket. Quicksilver the Archangel sorry for the short post, Oort will try out his magic on my next post :3 and he will happily carry Horatio wherever she needs to go 3nodding
