How many years had he been in silence? Not talking to anyone except for the bright blue tarantula who was his only friend. Was he lonely? It was hard to tell, he had built a wall of ice over his heart when he abandoned yet again by one he loved. She did not leave him like his mother did, she died and abandoned him by going to a place where he could not go. Tears came to his eyes, when he thought of her he was always close to breaking. The stallion shook his head, he could not bear to think about her now, now that he was leaving her land forever and entering a new one. His pale coat was in stark contrast to the woods around him, it was warmer as well, for there was no ice flurries that would freeze a being to the bone.

The forest was quiet, darkness seemed to be prevalent no matter which direction he looked. “Helkelia, it seems we are not in the Frosty Mountains anymore.” His claws would dig into the dirt and pick up clumps of earth mixed with decaying leaves. It was such an odd feeling, he was used to the rough solid ice beneath his claws and a constant scraping sound as he walked. Now he was almost silent, except when he stepped on a twig which seemed to echo loudly in the silent woods.

He continuously got the feeling that he was not alone, that he was being watched from the shadows. Time seemed to drag on as he waited anxiously for the lurker to appear, his apprehension was growing with each passing step and his imagination was creating vivid gruesome creatures that craved his blood. Ungwe Nique shook his head, trying to rid his head of such absurd imaginings, there was no such thing as creatures who thirsted for blood, it was just a story his mother would tell him at night to scare him from leaving the herd alone. The only creatures he needed to fear where the purewalkers that had slain the spider who had become his second mother; his fear for them was justified, while his imagined fear of blood thirsty beasts was childish and had no basis in reality.

As he talked himself out of his fear, he continued to walk through the dark woods, hoping to be out in the open by nightfall. The closeness of all the trees was starting to make him claustrophobic.

A deathly calm had settled over the forest ever since the massacre had taken place. It was as if birds refused to sing for fear of attracting unwanted attention, and leaves held their breath as they stared down upon the haunted scene. A white stallion, his maw drenched in blood stared blindly over a valley brimming with white lilies. The sweet scent of the flowers snagged in his throat and caused his icy blue eyes to water until he eventually had to turn away and head down the path he had worn into the earth. Day after wretched day he would visit the field of flowers seeking…what? Redemption? Sympathy? Atonement? Whatever it was he was looking for, he never found it in the innocent white faces of those flowers. And why should he? Beneath all of that beauty rested the corpses of all of those he had slaughtered because of his curse. He did not deserve their forgiveness, their sympathy, or their mercy for he had given them none. His head hung low and his dark forelock blocked out his vision as he walked mechanically along his chosen path, sinking deeper and deeper into the dark solitude of the forest.

It wasn’t long before something within him began to pull as he sensed the presence of another nearby. The muffled thudding of a strong yet unsteady heartbeat echoing in his ears called to the slippery dark tendrils uncoiling within his gut. The beast yearned for blood and another innocent had stumbled upon his hideaway, unwittingly calling to the monster of the forest. Black spots began to attack Craevan’s vision and he took to leaning against a tree for support. Within his breast the pace of his heart quickened at the prospect of the hunt, and he was barely able to utter a feeble “No” before the darkness latched onto his soul, tainting it and opening the gate between the prince and the beast. When he confidently stepped away from the tree he was no longer the unfortunate prince seeking redemption or merci, he was the beast whose greatest wish was to feel a jugular vein pop beneath his fangs.

The continuous beat of the stranger’s heart lead him directly to his pray and he soon found himself peering down through the trees at a taloned stallion. “This should be fun…” He growled, saliva dripping unattractively from his lips. Nothing made the beast happier than a target that would not make his meal an easy one; it was less fun if they merely surrendered. A devious smile split his maw and shone his two lethal fangs more fully as he swiftly and silently swept through the shadows until he was in the perfect position to strike. He waited patiently as the figure trudged down the path, uttering a few words to himself before finally coming within range. Rolling his shoulders back the armored stallion made his move, leaving the camouflage of the forest to fulfill his desire.

Stepping slowly out from his hiding place Craevan cocked his head toward the stranger and, in the most unassuming tone he could muster, fired a question at the other. “Are you lost?” He took a step closer, maintaining a pleasant expression upon his countenance. “Not many wander here for fear of the deadly beast lurking within these trees.” As he spoke of the beast his eyes warily scanned the forest surrounding them as if attempting to detect movement. “It is said that, even when the forest is calm, he is likely still nearby. Watching and waiting for the perfect moment to strike.” Adjusting his posture so that he was more relaxed he looked over the stallion, his eyes lingering on the location of his jugular vein as he imagined how much blood it would yield.

The sensation of being watched tickled down his spine, it would not alleviate, and instead with each passing step it would become worse. He began to look side to side, trying to find the creature who was watching him. His discomfort was growing, but he quickly pushed it away. He believed in monsters, but he did not suspect one to linger in these woods, that seemed so much younger than the ancient forests of his home land. Bumpump budump, his heart rate increased as he went deeper into the woods and nearly exploded from his chest when a pale stallion emerged from the shadows. He gave a sigh of relief, the stallion before him was not a beast, it was just someone guarding their territory, “What's it to you?.” He did not answer the question, it was stupid and implied that he did not know where he was going. He knew perfectly well where he was and never needed to ask for directions. He was on edge from the creepiness of the woods and did not want to spend time having small talk with a stallion who came from the shadows. But with the stallion’s next words, the frosted spider soquili had to laugh, it just seemed ridiculous, “That is just a myth, there is no such monster in these woods.” His laugh was forced, for only a few minutes before he was quite afraid of the creatures that lurked in these woods. It was in that moment, Ungwe realized he had enough, he was tired of being scared and being pranked by this stallion, he would not continue jumping at every shadow just because this pale stallion had a sick sense of humor. “That is not a very nice way to welcome strangers into a new land, threatening them with myths and silently watching them from the shadows so they believe your tale of a beast of the wood.” He scoffed and prepared to leave, “This was a fascinating conversation and all, but I am leaving. I do not take kindly to being pranked and lied to.” The clawed stallion started to turn away from the creepy pale coated watcher of the woods, if all the people in this land were as weird as him, Ungwe may just return to the desolation that was his home.

His ears pricked as the stallion spoke but Craevan was not interested in the tenor of his voice nor the meaningless syllables he breathed, instead he focused on the uneven rhythm of his prey’s heart. Each pump allowed the beast to see through the false bravado and straight to the fear driving the stallion to turn from him now and he closed his eyes, his body swaying to the beat as a look of terrifying pleasure settled over his countenance. “Oh yes, a myth.” He hummed, his delight lacing each word as it fell from his lips. “Ignorance..” he hissed, “it makes the best bedfellow.” Seizing the chance he slipped smoothly into the dark embrace of the forest once more as his game reached his favorite part, the chase.

Using the trees to his advantage he unleashed a dark laugh that bounced sinisterly off of everything it encountered, making it difficult to pinpoint the place of origin. “I’m sorry you felt lied to,” he started with an edge of mock sympathy, “but I will be more than happy to rectify that wrong.” A harsher and more maniacal laugh erupted from his chest as he moved deftly through the forest, his eyes never removed from the stallion for too long. Ropes of syrupy saliva dangled from his chin as his body readied itself to taste the sweet flavor of life water. “I shall try and make this prank more realistic.” He spat.

He took off running before the stallion did, knowing he would have to pick up speed and remain ahead of him until he could safely intersect him. He had noted the talons that would surely act as his prey’s only means of defense and had already begun to calculate ways to avoid meeting with them. His mind went into overdrive as his lungs pushed air and his muscles stretched to meet his intended speed. He was already anticipating the sensation of his prey’s body going limp beneath his fangs and he was rocked with shivers of desire.

Run. Run for your life. Panic filled the stallion as he stared in the woods and he began to run. His claws dug into the damp earth, picking up clomps and then dropping as he made his hasty retreat to some place safe. But where was safe? Not in these cursed woods. Sweat soaked his body and his breath was coming out ragged, he would not give up and become prey to the twisted creature who lurked in these woods. He was Ungwe Nique, slayer of Nevadia, a large spider who he believed to be queen. Yes she was just a baby, so was he at the time, and he paid dearly for the murder, but the point was he had killed before and would do so again to stay alive. His gaze swept across the tree filled landscape, where was the beast who stalked him? Budmump, budump, his heart pounded in his chest, a mixture of fear and adrenalin. He quickly cut left, hoping to trick the enemy and continued to run, making a zigzag trail. Where was the edge of the woods? The cocky attitude was gone, replaced by the need to survive.

He remained like a phantom for quite some time as he trailed the pale blue stallion frantically speeding through the woods, always sure to stay just out of sight. His hooves matched the rhythm of his prey’s heart as he ran along beside him and his chilled eyes glinted with the light of lustful excitement. He loved the game just about as much as he loved draining the other player of their blood. The adrenaline, the air filling his lungs, and the purely primitive desires driving him all accumulated into one sensation of pure joy. A joy that his weaker self shunned out rightly and recoiled from like a beaten animal, unable to stomach any of it.

Snapping his teeth he broke out of the line of the forest and made for the stallion’s shoulder. He was not yet ready to taste blood for he wanted to drive the stallion to a spot of his choosing. It all amounted in having the power in his hooves, in being able to choose the when and where. It made him feel good to be in charge of another living being, to have them bend to his will. “Is this real enough for you?!” He spat as he lunged at the clawed male.

Ungwe skidded, his legs a tangled mess as he tried to avoid the attack of the monster. But it did not work, it only slowed him down and made him an easier target. Run. Run. RUN! His heart felt as if it would burst from his chest and his lungs were heaving. Sweat covered his pale body but he did not give up. He did not want to die. His desire to live made him stand and attempt to fight. He shook his sharp horn in the direction of the Bloodlustful shadow, only to encounter air. Where was that demon? Ungwe shifted his head, looking around him, his talons dug into the dirt. “Why are you doing this? What did I ever do to deserve this?” He was whining, no longer did he hold that cocky attitude that had most likely gotten him into this situation. Ungwe knew that he was a pathetic stallion who hid behind bravado and it only made him loathe the Demon more for making him realize how much a weakling he was.
