The Tempest family is an incredibly old magical family, dating back to before the enactment of the Statue of Secrecy.
The family carries on a noble tradition of blood purity and general disdain for those of weak blood.
The home is managed by a small army of House-Elves, who are only allowed to be seen when serving dinner.
The true Tempest Family no longer resides here; the eldest son and his branch were disowned, the youngest son and his wife murdered by the eldest. The 'daughter' is not in fact their daughter at all, but a woman who adopted the identity to run from her crimes.
After the death of Edgar and Lenore, Callidora was left to inherit everything. She and her husband Remington moved into the estate with his daughter Cassandra and their son Edric.
Callidora's first act as owner of the estate was to remodel it from top to bottom. She despised Lenore's taste and reveled in removing all traces of hers and Edgar's presence.
Due to a recent scandal, the majority of the family has left the estate.

Lenore was seated in the parlor of her elegant estate, fuming. Her hands were like claws on the ends of the chair's armrests, tapping away incessantly, her jaw set, her eyes sparking with anger. This... this was all Edgar's fault. He was the fool who'd- well, it was really too late to bother tearing into him for it (and she'd already done so anyway, many times). She just didn't... there was a reason Callidora had been sent away, a reason they'd not spoken of her since she was eleven. Apparently, Edgar'd forgotten about that. But she hadn't, and she was not looking forward to welcoming her... daughter, back into her home. As if the woman who'd be arriving today could really be her daughter. She was a stranger; they'd never met, not really. The woman looked to her husband, her demeanor stiff, barely holding back the venom. "Edgar, dear, what time is she to arrive?" The words were simple, conversational, and held none of the disgust evident in her eyes. She'd have to wipe it from there as well; it wouldn't do to let the girl.. woman, know how she felt about this entire ordeal. It was an enormous inconvenience to have to do this, really it was... but it was the price she would pay for her past sins. If sins were what they could truly be called.

Edgar sighed when his wife addressed him, turning his gaze to her, glaring. He'd been ignoring her since they'd entered the room, honestly longer than that, ever since he'd decided to allow Callidora to return home. Lenore was quite displeased with his decision, but what choice did he have? There were factors he couldn't ignore, factors she was choosing to pretend weren't pressing matters... no, Callidora had to come home. Even if she wasn't truly welcome in their home, even if her presence was little more than a nuisance. There was nothing he could do about that, after all... he met her gaze, his own reminding her that there would be no argument. "Noon, my dear. Curb your aggravation; she's not late yet. She has ten minutes to arrive." He ignored her muttering, not particularly caring if convention said that 'fifteen minutes early is on time, and on time is late.' Lenore had never been on time for a damned thing in all her life. Even their wedding had began thirty minutes behind schedule. Lenore was merely using the time as an excuse, and he knew it. Honestly, he could care less. After all, it had been his decision, and one which she had no say in. She forgot her place sometimes. This seemed to be one of those occasions. Ah, well. Perhaps he'd have to reprimand her in front of Callidora, and it would set an example for the woman. Their daughter had been gone from their home a long time; she could probably use the reminder of how things worked.

❖ ❖ ❖ 'And you might say it's self-indulgent,

Lysandar watched his parents with a smug expression, amused at their bickering. The two of them seemed to be a happy couple out and about, but within the walls of their home, the veneer wore thin. They tried to keep up the act in front of the family, but it always fell through in one way or another. Today, it seemed, Mother was unhappy with Father making decisions without consulting her again. It was amusing how, even after all these years, she still somehow thought that she had a say in anything. Consultations with her weren't because she had any power; they were a show of politeness and goodwill by Father. In the case of matters of importance, this show was ignored in favor of doing what was right for the family. Surely she knew that? Even he received Father's attention before her if the occasion required true consultation. And yet this failed to register with Mother. Honestly, it amused Lysandar more than anything else. She was a woman; what made her thing she had any right to anything other than wants was given to her out of kindness?

Still, Lysandar kept his mouth shut, though it was pulled into a smile. Callidora had not darkened their family's doorstep since he was a boy, still attending Hogwarts. She'd been a mere child. He remembered what a waste of space the girl had been, and how much fun she'd been to torment. Would she remain so? Would she squeal and cry and threaten to tell their parents? It was a habit she'd never been properly broken of; thinking that her parents would care if she cried. They'd hated her then; did they still? This new Callidora was supposed to be an improvement over the child they'd done away with, but he wasn't convinced. After all, if his parent's couldn't teach her respect, what good could any other family have possibly done? Still, he waited, somewhat impatiently. The boy was fun to toy with, but he had to be careful; Nikolas was protective of the brat in spite of his deficiency. Callidora, on the other hand... no one would care what he did to her, so long as there were no marks to show. And he'd gotten very, very good at not leaving any signs...

Antony sat, silent and still, listening to the back and forth between his grandparents, his expression only slightly betraying his attempt to cover up how very, very uncomfortable he was. He caught his father's eye and offered a small, tight smile, which pulled a chuckle from the other man's lips. He sighed. Of course Father would find this amusing. Grandmother was annoyed at Grandfather, Grandfather was... well, he honestly didn't seem any more annoyed than he usually did, but still, when coupled with Grandmother's, and his own discomfort, it made the atmosphere entirely too tense. He sighed, his hand on his daughter's shoulder, and she sat next to him, confused and bewildered and having no idea what was going on. He hated putting her in this position. She had no idea what was going on; hell, he barely knew.; He'd not even known he'd had an aunt until last week when Grandfather had suddenly announced that she would be coming home. There were no photos, no portraits. There was no mention of her in the family tree. It was as if she had just... appeared. She was supposed to've gone away when she was eleven, to be homeschooled by his grandmother's mother and sister. After that, Grandfather said she'd traveled the world, never staying in one place for too long, and never returning home... or even bothering to write?

Antony didn't understand it. She was apparently a source of shame for the family, so why was she returning home?Grandfather had said her travels had been taxing the family's bank account, but he'd never seen any evidence... there had been a monthly sum that had been taken out, so perhaps that was it? Except that it'd hardly made a dent in their funds, so how was it such an inconvenience that she was being made to return home? Antony thought that, perhaps, it was more that she'd been behaving shamefully on her travels, and Grandfather didn't want word of it to come back and bite him in the a**. He'd never say so out loud, though. It'd be a sure way to gain trouble from his father.

                                                                      ═════════════════════════════════

                                  Something was going on.

Assuming from the viscosity of the tension in the air, which was knife-cuttable at its very best, it was something big. The boy cradled a tiny fox carefully in his hands as he hid outside in the hallway, out of sight. He had just returned from the less-kept parts of the grounds and the woods beyond it to find his preservation senses tingling like mad the moment he had stepped foot in the house.

                                  "She"

Someone was coming. They had a guest. And they weren't very happy about that. Slipping down the hallway, barefoot and silent, Ava crept up to his area in the house, careful not to alert anything or anyone of his presence. It got tiring sometimes, living in a house where hostility was a norm--- towards him; it was secular. He wondered who was coming, brushing blonde locks out of his eyes as he made his way up the stairs, clutching his shoes in one hand and the fox with the broken leg in another. Perhaps someone important? Had the family gotten mixed up in something? He hoped not. Perhaps he could ask Antony or Seph later on. Nikolas and Camille would be busy. A brief twinge of pain erupted on his lower back and Ava remembered.

Oh, yes. Stay away from everyone.

                                  That too.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════

Persephone, perched as she was next to her father, had absolutely no idea what was going on. Everyone seemed exceptionally tense, with the exception of Grandfather, who seemed almost amused at whatever it was that was going on. They'd all been summoned by Great-Grandfather. Someone was coming to stay with them. Persephone had seen the House-Elves scurrying about, preparing an extra room in the chambers Father shared with Grandfather, seen the rather feminine looking accents and decor. Some woman was coming to live with them... Persephone wasn't sure how she felt about that. She sighed and bit her lip lightly, turning her head when she heard something in the hallway. She thought she caught sight of Ava, and smiled. She tugged her father's sleeve, knowing that Ava wouldn't join them in the Sitting Room, although she never understood why. Antony nodded gently, and told her to return quickly. As she left the room, she heard him inform the family that she was going to the bathroom. Grandfather in particular was not supposed to know when she spent time with Ava... she didn't quite know why, though.

She approached her older cousin with a smile and a wave.
"Do you know what's going on? No one told me," she asked quietly, her voice the faintest whisper. She didn't want anyone to hear her talking in the hall, or they'd investigate. She wasn't overly hopeful when she posed her question, though. If anything, Ava typically knew less than she did about the goings on in the family. She had no idea why; she didn't understand much of anything in regards to how the family treated Ava. Something was supposed to be wrong with him... but she didn't see anything. Ava was nice. Funny, and she thought he was smart, although she was pretty sure everyone older than her was smart. But something was wrong with him... people were strange. Even her own family.

                                                                      ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════

When the familiar blonde head had peeked out and over at him, Ava had nearly spazzed out in worry. Motioning for her to move over, the blonde teen crouched down, replying in the same tiny whisper. A stifled smile came over his features when she had asked him what was going on. "No one told me either," he said wryly. It was unnecessary on their part to tell him, but he wasn't completely clueless about the going ons in the house. "Someone's coming, though," Ava said, looking in the direction of the dining room's entrance. "I don't think they like it very much. Persie," the quiet teen said seriously, expression turning solemn. "When they come along, don't call attention to yourself, alright?"

He felt apprehensive about what was going to happen, about the 'guest' that would be coming over and living with them.

He hadn't not noticed the flurry of activity going on around the house on the elves' part. He spent a good part of his time with them, after all, and he was still of Tempest blood, even if he hadn't the magic to go with it and the elves were good, kind creatures. 'Mistress Callidora is coming to stay, yes. She is coming home after so very long.' He didn't know who Mistress Callidora was, but if she was family, why was she not known to them? No portraits, no nothing, no mention of a Callidora anywhere in the house, and he lurked in it everywhere.

"Be a good girl and behave, alright, Persie,"he told his niece. Ava wondered about Antony and his parents in the room as well. "You'd better hurry and wash your hands so they don't get suspicious," Ava told Persie, assuming she had used a bathroom excuse to get out. It was common enough. "They'll be waiting for you."

Standing up, Ava gave a small wave and a smile before slipping away, fox still cradled in his hand--- he forgot about the poor thing--- his naked feet made no noise as he disappeared from view. He liked being alive.

And I don't like the look on his face, either. That's the scary look." The child of seven might love her grandfather dearly, and might be the only person in all the world he was decent to, but she still knew that look all too well. He'd never turned it to her, of course, but he didn't think much of staring like that at the House-Elves when they annoyed him and she'd seen it enough times to know that good things never followed that look. She bit her lip again, an incredibly bad habit she really needed to shake, and frowned. She really didn't want to go back in there. Whoever this person was, she didn't think she was going to like her very much. But Ava was right; her absence would only go unnoticed for so long. So, she gave him a quick hug before running down the hall to the nearest bathroom.

The blonde returned to the sitting room minutes later, having drug out her hand washing for as long as she could. Her father's stern look told her that she'd taken too long, but she truly didn't want to be here right now. Ah, well. She sat close to him, placing her small hand in his, smiling slightly when he gave it a gentle squeeze. No one spoke a word. They all just sat, staring at the door, waiting.

                                                                      ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════

Callidora stood at the doorstep and waited until the exact second the clock struck noon to knock on the door. When she was greeted by a House-Elf, she sneered down her nose at it, wanting to establish then and there that she despised it. Callidora didn't care for the creatures one whit. They disgusted her with their very existence. If not for the fact that without them they would have to find reliable witches to clean their homes, she'd be all for the entire species being killed, or at least shipped off to some island to spend forever trying to clean the sand off the beaches. An ugly island, of course, not a lovely one she'd enjoy a vacation on. Unfortunately, witches were still rather annoying with their desire to be treated as equals in spite of cleaning the houses of their betters for a living. So, the damned elves were still a necessity. Ah, well. She'd just have to establish that she didn't want to see them. Ever.

Her expression turned to a cold, sly smile when she entered the sitting room to see her so-called family. Her parents stood to greet her with tight smiles of their own, muttering greetings she was sure were supposed to seem heartfelt but really just made her want very badly to stab them both in the gut (and she might have done it, too, if not for the fact that it would be too difficult to clean the blood and explain the authorities, particularly with so many witnesses). She smirked at them both, glad that neither of them made any attempt to embrace her. Her brother, however, apparently thought a hug was just what was needed, and stood just behind their parents. As soon as the two of them were out of the way, he pulled her into a too-tight hug, giving her a sickly sweet smile as he pulled away.
"So good to have you home, Callidora. I've missed you," he said, pulling an annoyed scoff from her lips. "Yes, brother, I'm so sure you missed me terribly," she replied sarcastically, annoyed at his lies. As if he'd ever cared about what happened to his dear sister. She turned to Nikolas, who'd remained seated, and smiled.
"What, Nikky, no greeting for your sister dear? You're not going to introduce me to your dear wife?"
This was said with venom. His dear wife, who'd muddied their family line with a Squib. She offered a small wave to the woman, and a glare, to punctuate her obvious feelings on the matter of heir offspring.

Finally, she turned to the young man seated on the couch with his little girl. Her nephew (the only one she'd acknowledge) and great-niece. As if she was old enough to have a great-niece. Even one so young. She waited patiently for the young man to rise, but when he didn't she sighed, crossing her arms.
"Well, I suppose I can't expect much of a greeting from you, Antony. I was long gone when you were born, after all. But it is lovely to finally meet you, and dear Persephone," she told him, kneeling down before the child, chuckling when the girl flinched at her closeness. She grabbed the child's chin and stared deep into her eyes, as if she were searching for something. After a moment, she released Persephone and stood once more, tossing her black locks over her shoulder and turning to her parents. "I'll be retiring to my chamber. I haven't the stomach to socialize with any of you, and I'm rather tired. I suppose I will see you at dinner." She frowned when the House-Elf from before moved to lead her out, but acknowledged that she needed the thing. Otherwise she'd not know where to go. When she'd last been here, her chambers had still be the nursery, after all.

                                                                      ═════════════════════════════════

Touching onto the lawn, the blond let out a relieved sigh, near-moaning in happiness as his bare feet sunk into the grass. It was nice today, he decided, looking down at his lower appendages and wriggling his toes deeper into the green carpet. Cool-- moist, he realized, but not too moist-- not like yesterday. Hoisting up the small satchel he had with him, Ava stole a look behind him at the house. Hopefully no one would catch him out again. Seeing blank windows and reasonably uplifted by the birdsong and the nice sun out for the day, the teen sprinted across the wide expanse of lush lawn, ducking under an arch before twisting around and diving behind one of the hedges.

How long had it been since he had actually had time to go play animal? Probably too long, Ava sighed with an exasperated laugh at his person. People came into his life not so long ago, expanding his human-circle to include more than his family, which didn't count much with regards to his circle seeing as the majority of them weren't all that fond of his existence anyway. There was Ava, and Bris, and that guy-man-guy he had met at the park that time, though he didn't really catch his name but Ava most definitely remembered him, Caitlin and Rick-Richard and it might not be much, really, but that was how it was and the blond was glad for what he could get.

Anyway, now wasn't the time for low thoughts. Chastising himself for the near-blunder, Ava carefully made his way along the perimeter of the wood line. It was the first thing to do-- who knew what creature he would find among the leaves.

spaceLysandar had been watching the house for days, ever since the night he'd taken care of Antony's... boyfriend. Boyfriend, because while the pair had engaged in such disgusting public displays of flirtation, he never saw his son go to the man's house, so they weren't lovers. He at least had that to be thankful for. He knew that his family wondered where he'd vanished to, since it was quite unlike him to take off like that, but he couldn't risk being inside the house. If he'd come across the Squib, he wouldn't have been able to control himself. Someone would have stopped him... that was unacceptable. This needed to be taken care of. His mother and father meant well, but they were so concerned with appearances. For the boy to suddenly vanish would arouse suspicion, and they would be unwilling to let that happen. His parents, fools that they were, would try to save him. And besides, he didn't need to risk Persephone being exposed. When the time came, he would make her understand, but for now, any show of violence would only scare her. He didn't need to scare her away from him... it'd make it so much harder to teach her in the long run. Her father had been too... delicate, to be made to understand. She was not; she showed such promise. It was rare, but at times, she had a positively cruel light in her eyes... he would cultivate it. But first, the filth had to be gotten rid of.

spaceLysandar wasn't stupid; he knew who was to blame for the sorry state his family found themselves in. Before Avis' birth, they'd been on the right track. Wealthy, noble, holding positions of power, but not too much, able to whisper in the ear of powerful people. They held influence, but were in the background. It'd been better that way. The more they were noticed, the more they'd have been expected to interact with those who were less than them, and to treat them as equals. His parents were old-fashioned. They knew their place, and the place of those of less than pure bloodlines, and while they could treat them with respect when they had to, they would never allow one into their home... or, that had been the way before Avis. He recalled his childhood, his teen years... he recalled when Callidora's time to attend school had come. His eyes narrowed. Father wasn't very good at keeping secrets, try though he might. Outsiders may not know, but he did. Callidora did. Nikolas might not... he'd never been particularly bright, though. That was what made his defection so unsurprising. It was still disappointing, of course, but unsurprising. And now, because he'd been too weak to do what was needed of him, because he'd let his disgusting son remain in their home... now that son had corrupted Lysandar's own. His heir, cavorting about with muggles... and men. It was nauseating. And it would stop. One more had to die... and then Lysandar would punish Antony until he understood.

spaceThe former Slytherin's lip curled as he spotted the Squib running outside. He'd been waiting for a moment like this, a day where the child would get brave and decide to go running in the woods. He was so bloody predictable... but then, his mind was small. It was to be expected. Still, Lysandar had to be thankful; his inability to be smart and remain indoors would bring the boy straight to him. Lysandar waited until the boy was at the woodline and grabbed him. His hand covered Avis' mouth before the boy could scream, and his wand pointed at his throat. "You'll stay quiet. I'm not even going to make you; you'll do it because I say to. Understand?" His eyes glinted maliciously in the low light of the shade, his expression a cross between an insane sort of glee and cold fury. The result was quite unsettling.

spaceLysandar pulled Avis deeper into the woods on the edge of the estate, trying to decide how he wanted to do this. He'd been thinking on that for days waiting for his opportunity, but nothing had really... spoken to him. Did he want to torture the child first? ... That wasn't even a question, of course he did. The question was, how? He'd used the Cruciatus on the boy so much it almost seemed old hat... hm... perhaps he'd break a few bones first. He hated to admit it, but there was a certain sense of accomplishment in feeling bones crack under his hands. For the muggles at the bar, that'd been too crass of him to do, after all, he had to show them just how unworthy they were... but Avis... well, he'd put his hands on the boy before, however rarely he might've done it. Yes... that sounded lovely. He shoved the Squib away from him, then kicked him square in the chest. He was going to enjoy this...

                                                          ═════════════════════════════════════════════════

The hand that clamped over his mouth was large, calloused and glinted with the light of faded, grainy gold rings. A muffled scream built up in his throat, flexing madly as the sounds they attempted to make gained no purchase in finding their way to open air, pushing against the blunt wooden tip of a death-stick digging hard enough into his throat to bruise.

                                  Help!

He thrashed about, a futile attempt to free himself from the vice-like grip over his mouth, each breath shallower and shallower as he took in the same air he had expelled. What was happening? Why was this happening? Pale lashes, clumped together and moist with the beginning of tears fluttered over blue eyes as his hands began to claw at the arm that held him. It only took a glimpse for Ava to realize what was happening as he took in the look of his assailant, the bubble of fear growing in his chest swelling to terrifying levels as his uncle's mad gaze bore back into his. For a moment, he didn't believe it.

                                  Almost couldn't believe it.

But he did. Any hope of rescue died in the squib, the young Tempest still struggling-- because he couldn't just do nothing-- against the drag further into the woods, the hiss of the words of his own uncle making its rounds of horror in his ears. A few tears leaked from his eyes, streaking their way down his red face as they did, trying not to think about everything and failing miserably. Ava couldn't say he hadn't been expecting something like this-- he really couldn't, but now that it was here, it was far more terrifying than he could imagine. There was no telling what would happen to him. Close to blacking out, Ava was suddenly released, shoved roughly before the sole and heel of a hard-booted foot collided with his chest, knocking the wind out of him as he landed harshly on the ground. A sharp, slight crack travelled up his arm as he landed on his hand.

                                  He couldn't feel anything.

Staring wide-eyed and terrified up at Lysandar, he could do nothing but wait. There was not a single thing he could do.

                                  He was going to die.
