The last time he had gone looking for this... ancient necropolis, Brenley had nearly been sucked into some snowbound wasteland in the human world. That was not going to happen again, even if he had to spend the entirety of his student career searching for a decent portal to the place.

It was a lovely day at Amityville—the churrpups were chirping and the pumpkin sun was warm and bright for this time of year—but the reaper was in no place to enjoy it. He sat alone in the library, a thick, heavy book open on the table in front of him. It must have been enchanted somehow, because as he ran his thin fingers over its pages, golden words burst forth in their wake, fading to black as he read, then disappearing again when he turned the page. So far, he hadn't come across anything he didn't already know, but...

The boil slowly leaned forward in his seat, his eyes fixed on the newest collection of blackened words. It appeared he had spoken too soon.

those who enter the forest that weeps
will never uncover the secret she keeps
the way to sand and blinding light
is best unearthed in the dark of night

the one who shines a light, so bright
will find these caves of ancient might

Hm. Clunky but informative. None of the other books had mentioned going at night or lights of any sort. He could manage both.

The library was not on Ruth's list of usual hangouts, which was in its own way odd how at any given moment, there were dozens of students and sometimes even faculty available for her to watch and observe and possibly bother. Many were clustered together in small groups, discussing lessons and exams with hushed whispers in the study rooms, while the individuals kept to themselves, probably wanting privacy and to be left in peace.

It made for a somewhat stagnant pool of observational choices, or at least that was what Ruth initially thought of the library and its patrons. But the expected silence and amount of focus those in the building exerted became a siren call for the paranoia agent the moment she stepped inside. She soundlessly padded towards the back, searching for a table she could occupy and proceed to watch and stare and wait until someone noticed her attention.

It just so happened that she spotted a familiar face reading a book. Sure she only saw him during Rengath's class and hadn't actually spent time with him outside, but that sort of thing never stopped Ruth from approaching. Rather than casually greet him, however, the blonde hovered beside him, purposely standing in his light all the while grinning from ear to ear. Her bangs obscuring her eyes and hiding the fact she was also trying to sneak a glance at whatever it was he was reading.

Engrossed in his research, Bren didn't notice that he was being watched until the other reaper had been standing between the light and his book for well over a minute. Even when he did realize something was off, he felt Ruth's presence more than actually registering what was wrong, and he responded initially by shifting his eyes left and right as far as they could go, as if he could somehow see behind his back if he tried hard enough. Finally, he looked over his shoulder, glaring up at Ruth and moving to cover the book until he realized the gesture was futile at this point. He couldn't help thinking a companion would be beneficial on this journey anyway, so it was probably best not to chase her off.

The boil sat back and turned, forcing his expression into the realm of pleasantness. "Sorry. Um... Just reading." He slid a hand across the book's page, rejuvenating the letters' golden glow before they faded back to black. "I think it's a way into a place I've been looking for. It's not really a secret, I guess, since it's here... in the library... but I can't go there until tonight." Brenley forced himself to stop talking, raising his eyebrows and waiting, as if she would actually verbally contribute to the conversation.

How much Ruth managed to read over Brenley's shoulder she didn't say, not that that was important since her fellow reaper was beginning to explain just what it was he was up to. Needling and wheedling the information out of him would have been a much more fun activity, but he was already volunteering it and Ruth wasn't going to look a gift nitemare in the mouth.

At his pause, Ruth pursed her lips, tapping her chin as if in deep thought. She was processing what she'd read with what he'd said and it was, in all honestly, extremely interesting. Secret-ish journeys into a not-really-quite-forbidden location at sorta-dangerous times of night? Oh count her in!

Two thumbs were displayed before the capped blonde tapped at her wrist, suggesting that she was asking what time tonight. Until she realized she wasn't wearing a watch. Forcing a grin to hide her sudden embarrassment at the fact, she looked around to point at the library's clock.

His guarded welcome broke into a more genuine—if still restrained—show of enthusiasm in response to Ruth's reaction. Bren might have largely preferred doing things by himself, but he knew this particular job was too big for him to tackle alone. Plus, he trusted the ghoul, as much as one could trust someone they barely knew. At the very least, he had seen that she wasn't afraid to put herself in harm's way in the name of discovery, even if she ended up puking in some human world bush as a result.

"I guess that means you'd like to come?" he asked, a faint teasing lilt accompanying his equally faint smirk. "I could use help, so... ten o'clock?" It was kind of late to be starting an adventure, especially in the middle of the week, but the book had stressed 'the dark of night.' Nights didn't come much darker than ten... unless you counted midnight, but that was just ridiculous.

He lowered his voice to a volume even quieter than was appropriate in the strictest of libraries. "I'll meet you by Breck's shed with some supplies."

noooo you are far from the worst <3 i will time skip to nighttime in my next post wheeeeee

Again, the two thumbs up returned and she was nodding in agreement. At this point, if Bren had said she couldn't or shouldn't come, she still would. If only out of spite and because it made it all the more exciting. She raised the rest of her fingers, ten o'clock her hands confirmed. Her big, wide grin had a rather manic edge to it as she began to mentally list the supplies she would be bringing. She thrust her hand out to Bren, and tipped her cap off her head ever so slightly as if to seal the deal.

Tonight was going to be so much fun!

Quote:
Historical IC background: The Ancient Necropolis is a vast tomb system buried in the desert, located in the Human World but far from any human settlement. All the exits to the surface have long since been buried, but the tombs here have lain untouched for thousands of years. The artwork and relics within them would make any Human archaeologist weep. Of course, you're here only for particular relics.

(Oh, and watch out for the ancient guardians... )

gaia_crown [ Getting Started: ]

Getting into the The Ancient Necropolis:
- You need to camp out in the Weeping Forest after reading the information. Hunters can enter Halloween as well without a golem (recommended as the Altar itself is very golem unfriendly due to its climate and high altitude as well as natural enemies), for a max of 30 minutes. Each roll takes 5 IC minutes - students can pretty much park here as long as they need as well as horsemen while Hunters will need to exit and enter back again.
- Basically, all Hunter characters have 6 chances to find the portal. If they don't find it, they will need to leave and come back. Students and Horsemen do not need to ICly leave and come back.
- All players roll 1d100.
- Rolling 50 or less will let players find a portal that takes them to the frigid tundra, near a certain abandoned base that some older Hunters might remember. Some polar bears have taken up residence here, and gosh aren't they hungry? Better run!
- Rolling 70 or less will let players find a portal to an alley near a busy street marketplace in Cairo, Egypt, and a street vendor mistakes you for someone that stole some of his wares. Yikes!
- Rolling 80 or less will lead you to the Haunted House.
- Rolling 81 or higher will let you find the portal! Success! You can now proceed inside.

Long after darkness fell, Bren made his way to the outskirts of the forest, eyes wide as he remained on the lookout for any older students or instructors. He wasn't sure what would happen to him if he was found out, but he couldn't imagine it would be pleasant or good for his reputation amongst those who were in charge of his grades. Best to keep things quiet for as long as he could.

The last time he had come here, he had gotten quite turned around before he'd managed to reach his goal, or at least what he'd assumed his goal was. The portal had led to a warm, sunny desert, the climate much like the one he'd hailed from, minus the sand. But there had been nothing more to it, no obvious way inside, and in the end he'd been forced to conclude that maybe he'd been wrong. At least there was no question he'd been close.

Hefting the small bag he'd brought back onto both shoulders, Brenley took another look around, and not yet noticing Ruth's arrival, he began to inch deeper into the forest. He'd brought a small stone enchanted to provide a dim light source, but he didn't use it now. He was looking for something odd in the trees, a strange, wavering bit of air that indicated there was magic at work.

Eventually, he did find one, well, actually he found three. A trio of unopened portals shimmered in a ring around him, still visible from the shed where he'd agreed to meet the other reaper. He weaved around them, looking for some obvious difference between the three, but finding nothing concrete, Brenley chose the one that felt right, poking his fingers into the void and watching the portal spread open in front of him. The air inside was warm and dry, and the dark space ahead was lit by torches and filled with dingy chalices and coins. Bending through the magical hole, he retrieved one for himself, examining the tarnished profile on its face before tossing it back through.

It was fifteen to Ten o' clock came and there was no Brenley in sight yet. That didn't worry Ruth, she intentionally arrived before him because she was going to go exploring! She adjusted the small rucksack she brought along and set forth into the forest.

Of course, not knowing exactly what it was she was looking for, she was half-way through a portal before she realized what was happening. And she ran smack into freezing wind. But it was the moving pile of snow in front of her that had her internally muttering: Oh candlejack.

Ruth kept running, slipping and tripping on the snow. Her weapon barely fended away the polar bear and maybe she properly backtracked her way to the forest. It had taken her some time that was for certain as evidence by the silent wheezing and the continuous shivering from the cold. She leaned against the shed to catch her breath, not realizing she had missed Brenley's arrival on the other side.

Ruth had begun to unpack, checking over her supplies (it involved a lot of rope and variations therefore) to calm her nerves and still the trembling. She was never going to like the cold, she was sure of that but it was certainly an experience she'd keep in mind.

Once again, Ruth went in search of her co-adventurer, this time taking care to search for footprints and other signs of disturbances (that weren't hers). She didn't have to search long before she was greeted by a... coin.

Rubbing the spot where the small piece of ancient currency hit, Ruth noticed the odd shimmer in the air and pursed her lips. Tying a length of rope to the shed, and securely gripping the other end, she entered the portal with the soft crunch of sand beneath her shoes.
