Winter was coming, but the sun was shining and the air was slightly warm, it was the perfect day for the baskets to pop and to see the vibrancy of the world. Any moment now his three children would be coming out of hiding and he would see the fruit of his happiness for the first time.

Slowly each basket shook as the foals found their way out, first was the dark basket. One hoof, then another, and then finally the whole colt. He was strange, he did not have a normal tail, but one that was long with spikes. He matched his mother’s coloring that reminded Zach of the depths of the ocean. It did not matter that his son was different, Zach loved him even more for his differences.

Next came a filly who reminded Zach of his sister Ayla, she was dark in coloration but colorful all the same. She was beautiful. The last foal finally made her way out of the basket, she was pale with rainbow markings as well, but upon her back were spikes that were similar to her mother’s.
All his wishes had come true, he had found the love of his life and with her created a lovely family of two daughters and one son. He loved all his children dearly and was glad to see that they were a mix of both him and Neela, although his eldest daughter reminded him of his sister Ayla.

His eyes kept watching his small family, how did he get so lucky? He turned to Neela and gives a wide joyous grin, “I am the luckiest stallion in the world. Thank you for being in my life.” He knew he was being gushy, but he could not contain his elation. “And now to name our lovely children.” Names were discussed before the baskets even arrived, but now that the foals have left the baskets, naming their three children became an important task.

Was it time? How was one supposed to know when it was time? Is that not a question that all the world seemed to ask themselves? The colt stopped, how was he to know what the world thought, he had not yet even left the safety of his basket. That was the question he was asking, not the philosophical equivalent. Was it time for him to leave the darkness and enter into the light? Yes, he believed it was so, the small space was getting cramped and slight twinges of claustrophobia began affect the colt. Slowly he began to move, to wiggle, trying to escape from the confines of the basket that had kept him safe while he gained in strength after he left his mother’s womb.

The light was blinding, it hurt his eyes and he continued to see spots whenever he closed his lids. Once his eyes became used to the light, the first person he laid eyes upon was a large horse, the color was dark and similar to his own. She must be my mother, he thought to himself, she is the most beautiful mare. His gaze goes to the pale stallion next to her, he must be my father, standing there proud with a loving? Yes loving gaze upon his countenance. But wait, what was that? There was a flicker of something, almost like they were surprised about what they had seen. Was he different in some way? Was he not what they expected him to be? He did not feel different, he felt like himself. He shook his head, soon he would learn what that look was for, but for now he would watch his siblings leave the basket and watch how their faces brighten at the sight of their loving parents and the lovely world around them.

It was dark and it was cramped. They were not conscious thoughts but, rather, a sense of discomfort that drove the foal to push and pull, to shift and wriggle around. The quiet solitude that had once been pleasant for her was no longer enjoyable – now, it was almost suffocating. And it was not just inner turmoil that prompted her, either; there was something she yearned for... something outside.

Knees knocked against the walls of her basket and her head lifted from its resting position as she began to press and spread outwards. It took her only a few minutes of probing to discover one side was more willing to give than the others. After a second’s worth of contemplation, she poked it with a hoof.

Light; then, darkness returned. She blinked rapidly against it, though the pain was minor compared to the excitement she felt. Positioning herself better, she gave it a few more kicks. This time, the lid shifted towards the side and caught against the lip of the basket, so that the crescent of light that formed did not disappear. It took only a few more thrusts to completely remove the barrier and leave a moon of an opening. She was free, but something was wrong. She was upside down.

A braying noise of complaint was her greeting to the world, followed by the flailing of small limbs. She rocked wildly to right herself, but when she collapsed onto her side, the basket followed, so that it flipped around and caught her beneath it once more.

Neela was a bundle of nerves again. just as she'd been right before her little babies came into the world. Would they come out okay? Did they need help? What if they didn't like her? Silly little thoughts kept coming and going as they waited. For some reason they just knew, today was the day.

She lay facing the baskets, eyes darting back and forth like an excited puppy waiting for a treat. And then one of them moved. She jumped toward a little, ready to whip off the lid of the basket, but made herself wait. They could do it, her strong little babies would make it out! Her handsome little boy peeked his head out first, and she didn't see herself in him, if anything she saw her own daddy in that familiar dark coloring. She rubbed her nose against his little face. "Hello baby."

But no time to dwell another one was ready to come out and play too. The one that made her think of her and Zach if they had been blended together into one.

The colorful filly kept hearing all these strange noises around her, and voices seemed to be louder than before. She wanted to know what all the racket was about! But as she popped open the lid just a crack, cold flooded in and so did bright lights. With a sound of protest she shut herself back inside where it was warm... she'd find out what was going on later... maybe in the Spring.

Neela giggled, but didn't blame the middle one, she would probably need more coaxing to come out and see the world. As she nudged the second basket a lid popped rapidly off the third. It seemed their youngest was a little more brazen than the other two... and a little stuck. She couldn't contain a laugh once the filly had toppled over out of the basket. She picked up the edge to peer under it at their second daughter, "Having some troubles, darling? These baskets sure are tricky."

Zach was beside her, seemingly as elated as she was, and she returned his affection once she had tipped the basket off the little one. "Name them? Oh goodness. That seems like such an important task! How will we decide?"

Zachary could not help laughing along with his mate, it was a joyous laugh, and they were able to share in such joy. He turned his complete attention to her, he had asked her about the names, but now he was getting nervous, what happens if they made a mistake and named their children something that would allow them to be ridiculed? “Well I know we were talking about Killian if we had a son, although he is not bright as the name depicts, so perhaps we can name him that for his mind? We had so many girl names and now we have two beautiful daughters, how will we know which is the right choice for our little lovelies?”

He looked at his eldest daughter, still partly in her basket and then to his youngest who was upside down and seemed to be a mess of legs. His daughters and his son, he was a father, a stallion who will be shaping the lives of these little ones. Zach shifted back and forth, “Neela, what were your two favorite girl names again?” He knew them off the top of his head, but he wanted to make sure that they were still the same, perhaps she had come to favor different names instead of the ones they had pondered weeks before.

She pondered this for a moment and smiled at her spikey little boy. "Killian. I think it's a handsome name for a handsome boy." Her attention then turned to the two fillies. Er.. one filly and one basket. "Hmm. I think our brave little girl who jumped right out into the world should be Moira. That fits right? It sounds.. daring. Which leaves our sweet little darling who doesn't want to come meet the world." That earned her a little black and gold nose to peek out of the basket, and she smiled. "Lyra."

Killian… the name entered into his ears and made him pause, it felt right, yes, that was his name, he was to be Killian, the Bright One. He gave an internal snort at that thought, he knew that his name would now be an aspiration for intelligence, since he will never be light or bright in coloration. His pale blue eyes looked over to his sisters, one was still hiding inside her basket; his mother called her Lyra. He committed her name to memory. Then his gaze went to his brazen sister, what had his mother said, oh yes, Moira.

His family, all colorful in their own way. Words were coming to his mind which he did not know the meaning, did not have imaging to supply the knowledge, he had heard words while in the basket so his subconscious had stored them for later. He turned his gaze back to his parents, their joy was infectious and he wanted to dance with it. But he held still and let the words of those who created him wash over him.

Killian, Lyra, and Moira, his children. Zachary smiled at his mate, “those are perfect names for our little ones darling.” He walked over the basket that housed little Lyra, “Come on little one, come see the world, it is much more interesting than the dark confines of your basket.” He turned to his son and nuzzled him, “Welcome to the world Killian.” He smiled at the young colt, Zach would not admit this out loud but he was secretly glad that he got a son so he was not completely overrun by girls. He went to Moira last, “That was quite the entrance little one,” Zach nuzzled her in greeting as well and then went back to his mate, “Neela, our children are amazing. And it was as we hoped, two daughters and a son.”

Alas, the basket’s new top did not yield to her as easily as the one that had come before. The foal gave a huff and considered her options when, like magic, it lifted all on its own. In an instant she was lunging towards the opening, only to stop short when she noticed a gigantic muzzle loomed ahead. The face was a stranger to her, but the scent was familiar, and the voice, kind. She recognized them from before, back when she was content to remain in her basket... Ah, she understood it now. This was her mother.

Apprehension gone along with the basket, she maneuvered her legs so that they did not overlap quite so much. With a push, she was up.

The pride she felt flared briefly and was gone. The ground did not seem quite so steady with only four small hooves to connect her to it, and her dread may have rooted her to the spot had her parents not spoken so serenely above her. The light one – her father? – even came to nuzzle her as well as speak. The words were alien to her, but the familiarity of their pitch and tone was comforting. She took one step towards it, and then another. Keeping track of all four legs at the same time was taxing to her mental processes, as evident by the tongue slipping out from between her teeth, but before long it came so easily that she could walk without thinking consciously of it.

She was eager to display her newfound prowess and craned her head towards her siblings, one that was the same size as her and another that was strangely round with only a single eye and no ears. She bleated to announce her intentions, but when she attempted to head towards them, she realized she could only walk in one direction and had no idea how to turn at all. Bewildered by this unexpected challenge, she froze in place.

Another nose appeared in Lyra's vision that looked a bit like hers, white instead of black with a little gold on the tip. This smell was familiar too, someone close to her she figured. There seemed to be a lot of commotion going on outside concerning these others named Killian and Moira, and as cold and bright as it was it seemed she was wanted outside. Finally, she popped her head out. She was blinded for a moment before scanning the others who were gathered about. With a little bit of shuffling and scooting the little filly managed to tip herself out of her basket and tumble onto the ground, very similar to her sister's entrance. These long gangly things beneath her body were wobbly and shaky but she somehow managed to stumble her way over to the closest warm body, which happened to be Zachary, and huddled against his legs.

His eyes were filled with love and admiration as he watched his eldest daughter stumble to him. He leaned closer to his small daughter, giving her more warmth and protection. “It is okay little one, you are safe.” He began to hum a song to his timid daughter, one that his mother used to sing to him and his siblings before they went to bed. Lyra continued to shiver against his legs, but he knew that soon the world would be more interesting than the comfort and support of his legs. His gaze went to his other children, Moira had begun to walk in a clumsy manner toward her brother who stood firmly in place, almost as if he did not wish to stumble. Zach shook his head, he did not know what his son was thinking, the only thoughts for sure he knew were his own and those were filled with such elation and happiness he was surprised he was not flying in the clouds.

The small colt watched as his sisters took their first steps, Moira had announced her intention by giving a bleat. Her first steps were not at all graceful, her legs seemed to go in every direction except the one that she wanted them to go. And then when Lyra finally appeared from her basket she had as much grace as her sister as she stumbled toward the pale rainbow stallion. Killian looked down at his own shaky legs, why had he not tried to make his first steps since coming out of the confines of his basket? He was curious at what his sisters would do and now that they have satisfied his curiosity, he too would make his first stumbling steps. He returned his sister’s bleat and stared at his legs, one leg moved forward then the next one. His legs did not want to go where he wanted them to go. His first attempt at walking was no less graceful than his sisters. With a thud he landed on the ground, his legs sprawled in a discombobulated fashion. Killian felt like laughing at the scene he and his sisters were making. When will they finally get control of their legs? And form words instead of sounds of nonsense?

((Sorry for the sudden slowness there! Final projects are due this week, and my final exams will end on the 16th, but I should have more time after that!))

User ImageLyra’s movement caught Moira’s attention, but it was Killian’s bleat that kept it. Excited to find her call returned, she released another trumpeting sound as her tail swung from side to side. It appeared to embolden her, for she lifted a hoof as if to take another step, but the sudden shift in balance was enough to tip her over and send her tumbling the rest of the way towards her brother.

It was difficult to gain any momentum in the nearly flat field, and so the resulting crash was only a slight one. It didn’t seem to cause much harm, if Moira’s quick recovery was anything to tell by. Proud to have made the journey, she nipped at the hairs of her brother’s mane and seemed content to lie in the sprawled position the crash left her in.

Lyra was content huddle beside Zachary, he was warm and was making the nicest sounds that soothed her. Her siblings kept capturing her attention though, and it seemed she wasn't the only one with some leg difficulties. Her brother and sister seemed to be interacting, and she was curious what exactly they were up to, but the allure of her father's warmth kept her cemented to her spot under him. Strangely, they didn't seem bothered by the cold at all.

The small filly peered up at the large stallion from between his front legs. Lyra decided she liked him, she didn't really know why but it was just an instant feeling when she looked at him. Letting out a small whinny at him, she smiled and nuzzled against his leg.

Seeing Zachary had one foal covered, she made her way over to the other two. There seemed to be a pattern with the youngest as she was on the ground once again. Giving her a quick once over to make sure she really was okay, then gave her a quick nuzzle. Then another once over of the other foal on the ground. Her little boy seemed so stoic, she assumed the world was just seeming like a very big place to him. Her nose pressed into his little neck and she nuzzled him soothingly. He smelled so wonderful, her little baby... was that weird? She'd worry about that later. "You alright baby?"
