It never sat well with the blonde Orderite that he'd lost so many times against those stupid Firani. It wasn't as though he was weak or anything, or maybe it was? Or perhaps it was just bad luck...he really couldn't be sure, but for the last few days he'd been rolling around on his bed at the local inn (because thankfully Quan had said that he was too roughed up to be roughing it out on the road) frustrated, and completely discontented with his situation.

"Dragons..." he'd muttered earlier that morning before promptly getting up and heading back out into the Malro against Quan's wishes. He knew he'd get an earful from the old man when he got back, but since Quan had been out it wasn't too hard to get out of the inn and back to where Ainsley believed he belonged, even in his injured state.

Of course, once he finally sighted a Firani after an hour or so's worth time of walking, he suddenly realized that it was really dumb of him to come all the way out here only to risk death because he was being stubborn. Bull-headed, more like, because he didn't want to accept the fact that he'd lost so many times to these creatures. In his frustration (and boredom), he'd come all the way out here, only to sigh and want to turn back and roll around on his bed at the inn again. Just as he was about to leave, though, the dragon seemed to notice him and fired off a quick blast from its mouth which Ainsley barely managed to roll away and dodge.

That was his thing these days, apparently, "barely" getting away. The teen gripped the hilt of his axe and readied himself for another attack, only to be barraged by strikes from the creature's large claws. He was able to bob and weave and use his axe as something of a shield, but he didn't last very long and eventually had to turn tail and run...

Again.

Not that running even did him any good out in the Malro. The last time he'd run for an extended period of time, he landed himself in a ditch and was forced to stay overnight to let his wounds heal and rest up so he could get out in the morning. As he ran, his legs heavy and the wounds he'd incurred from his last encounter with a seriously unpleasant Firani suddenly beginning to open again because they had yet to fully heal, his mind reeled at the idea of finally succumbing to these beasts. He didn't think he'd be so young though...

He felt the heat from the dragon's flame attacks on all sides as it continued to come after him, and at some point he couldn't run any further so he got his axe again and turned around to face the beast. Before he could jump to make an attack, though, the dragon butted heads with him and sent him flying several feet. The teen saw stars and felt blood trickle down his face from yet another new injury, and he grit his teeth and forced himself up. The dragon didn't seem at all affected, and if anything it snorted, as though mocking him and his efforts.

Ainsley, whose mouth was normally running ahead of his brain, held his tongue and instead raised his axe once again. He didn't want to lose, not again...

So he ran and tried to swing his axe at the beast, only to be swatted away for his effort. Perhaps he was too frustrated? Too anxious? As he landed in the sand, more blood soaked his clothes and his body was suddenly very heavy, but he got up again anyway. It was the sort of determination that Quan constantly praised and chided him for having, the absolute refusal to lose.

"Something about learning when to turn and run..." the teen said as he squinted at his target in the distance, who stared right back at him as it snorted once more. "Yeah, right."

And Ainsley made a run at the Firani, this time going in a sort of zig-zag pattern so he wasn't such an easy target. His axe made contact with the beast's claw as it tried to swat him away again, but it only managed to deter the Orderite a bit before he sidestepped out of the dragon's claw's way and tried to jump and hack at its body. It seemed like a good idea, until he saw the dragon's tail coming.

In the air he couldn't dodge or weave, or even force himself back down towards the ground. Ainsley could only take the hit as the dragon's tail sent him flying in some direction or another, and the teen once again landed in the sand with a cloud of dust.

Ainsley picked himself up out of the sand once again, looking at his sweat and blood-soaked clothing and wiping away the blood on his face with his sleeve, successfully dirtying the shirt that much more. He was injured and exhausted, but the adrenaline high was still there, and even though he knew he was well past his body's limit of taking such hard hits from beasts so large and so powerful the Orderite just couldn't get himself to back down. The effect of too many losses, perhaps? He didn't even want to think about it.

Instead, he gripped the hilt of his weapon once more and look at his target in the distance. It look almost bored at his attempts, but snorted, bits of flame escaping its nostrils in the process. Really, the blonde was getting tired of this kind of this as well. Perhaps it would be a better idea to target creatures that weren't almost guaranteed to kill him, but that would have to wait until after he got out of this encounter alive. With any luck, he just might.

After taking a deep breath, Ainsley ran for the dragon again, his axe dragging in the sand as he waited for just the right time to jump and strike. With such a large weapon there weren't really many choices with how to wield it, so Ainsley did what he knew best. At just the right moment, when he saw the dragon poise to strike and let fly its claw in his direction, he jumped and swung his axe, feeling the blade of his weapon finally make contact with his intended target. The dragon let loose an angry roar as Ainsley cut through its shoulder, and in its anger it successfully managed to scratch and claw Ainsley and his axe off of its body.

The Orderite was able to land safely, though he had to roll away as the Firani came at him with its flame breath this time, and he felt the heat once again as the dragon began to chase after him. It didn't seem any slower than when it first attacked, much to Ainsley's annoyance, but the Orderite ran as fast as he could, occasionally risking his wings so he could glide a bit further ahead and rest his legs in the process. It was probably just chance that the dragon slowed to a stop when something cried out in the distance. Ainsley couldn't be sure what it was, but the flames stopped coming and he heard the beast snort in the distance as he glided forward once again, glancing back only to see that the Firani had taken flight and started in the opposite direction.

The teen landed none too gracefully, face first into the sand as he struggled to catch his breath. He was completely worn out, though his wounds were numb because he'd managed to re-open every single one of them during this stupid little excursion of his. Stubborn, likely to his dying breath, though thank Seren that wouldn't be today, the teen managed a bit of a laugh at the thought of what Quan's face would look like when he saw him again later that day.

When he was able, Ainsley sat up and glanced around the desert, noting that it was high noon already and he'd die of dehydration if he didn't get back into the city. It'd be another few hours, so he got up and began the slow trek back to safety.
