Right, well as we all know the Matt Smith Doctor is the 13th Doctor, not the 12th because of the Time War Doctor. That being said, they are still going to have Peter Capaldi become the 14th. So, it seems the whole regeneration limit for the Doctor may be removed or at least bumped up and I was doing a bit of research and thinking and came up with an idea how he could possibly beat the regeneration rule. As with most such "rules", there were occasionally exceptions to the twelve regeneration limit. The High Council offered the Master a new regenerative cycle if he rescued the various incarnations of the Doctor from the Death Zone. (TV: The Five Doctors) Although he did not receive this award on that occasion, during the Last Great Time War the Master was given the ability to regenerate at least once more. (TV: Utopia) It was implied he could regenerate further. (TV: Last of the Time Lords) That being the case, I believe that since the Doctor found a way to save Gallifrey, he will be awarded more regenerations as a reward. What are your opinions on this?

nah uh, dude, I only counted 12, including the war doctor.
I though the rule was 13, not 12...

In the Stolen Earth, the Tenth Doctor regenerates but uses his hand to stay the same. This creates the Meta-Crisis Doctor, which counts as a regeneration. So Matt was originally 11, add 1 for War Doctor, and then another for 2nd 10, so Matt is actually the 13th regeneration but is considered the 12th doctor.
Confusing right?

kalenakeeper nah uh, dude, I only counted 12, including the war doctor. I though the rule was 13, not 12... Moffat's counting Tentoo as a regeneration, so according to that, Matt Smith's Doctor would be the thirteenth Doctor. And the rule is 12 regenerations, which makes 13 lives.

Well, here's my thoughts on the matter. Remember how in "Let's kill Hitler" River Song gave up her remaining regenerations to save the doctor? I'm gunna say that Moffat's gunna be all like "that allowed him to regenerate a couple more time because she gave him some spares."
That, or since the twelve regeneration rule was a time lord thing, and they no longer exist, he's just gunna throw that rule out the window. (Not sure if that's possible. I'm not even sure how it really works, I never got a chance to see much classic Who.))

In that same episode, the Doctor made it seem regeneration was an option until the voice interface said regeneration was disabled by the poison. However, there are other ways he could have gained regenerations. After all, the 8th Doctor died before he could regenerate and was given a potion to regenerate him in a specific way after being revived. This may have been a freebee, or it could have reset his regeneration count. Plus the Time Lords police regens, so they could have upped the limit to help win the war. Pleanty of possibilities.

Since Tom Baker appeared at the end of Day of the Doctor stating that the Doctor revisits some of his old favorite faces it will be interesting to see how the new Doctor Who throws out the "A timelord has 13 regenerations" rule from the Doctor Who movie.

I do know that in Sarah Jane Adventures when Matt Smith appeared he said he could regenerate over 500 times so I'm guessing they sort of threw the whole only 12 regenerations idea out the window

No because the war doctor doesn't use the name of the doctor so technically he's the zero doctor or the half doctor so he's not counted. There!!!!! eek surprised xp
