The Crypt

Quote:
It's that time of year again, and rumors are once again flying about haunted places and strange creatures being sighted. The Blood Moon is shining and the world of Magesc seems slightly darker and more dangerous. Normally you count all these strange rumors as just that, strange rumors. But you overhear one conversation that perks your interest: a man, badly wounded, is talking to a woman. Apparently he found an odd place out in the wilds filled with danger and treasure.

You may rp out his conversation; talk with him or merely eavesdrop if you wish.

He doesn't know who made the place, describing it as an odd and spooky underground labyrinth filled with alcoves where the dead are laid to rest. The skeletons don't have much treasure on them, ht e fine clothes they wore to their funerals have all rotted away, but their jewelry still remains. The woman looks disgusted, stealing from the dead? He quickly shakes his head: No! He saw but didn't take those, for who knows what curses were on them. The dead keep what is theirs. But he found other treasure, deep inside the crypt. It was in a huge room that reminded him of a temple, but had three statues in it. He had seen the chests, but dare not go and look inside them: strange things were floating about in that room. Huge shadows that looked like carrion birds, and bright balls of fire with a floating skull inside of them. He hadn't wanted to explore the place any further, the Blood Moon made things too dangerous!

The woman asks if he would try to go there after the Blood Moon is gone, and he shakes his head vehemently. He'd been all over that area many times before and had never seen the entrance to that place before!

To get the location, you have 2 paths you can choose: eavesdrop some more as he speaks about where it is, or ask him directly. Either way, go to The Entrance.

Ainsley stared idly at the small pint that sat in front of him, his dinner plate already having been whisked away by the pretty waitress not more than five minutes ago. He wasn't all that into drinking, actually, but, although tonight wasn't really all that "special" in the first place, Quan seemed to insist that the two of them celebrate some holiday or other. The blood moon, as the blonde had observed it while the two travelers made their way into the local watering hole, was still out and he felt, though he'd never admit it, a bit antsy about celebrating anything on nights that looked as ominous as this. He'd heard stories...

And that's about all there was to his nerves. Quan, who seemed to catch his pupil's tired expression, clapped a heavy hand on the teen's shoulder as he usually did and laughed. "Loosen up, boy! We're celebrating a life tonight, and if that old b*****d was still alive he'd want you to be celebrating too!" Quan's words were already slurred since he was getting into his sixth drink that evening. Ainsley didn't seem to be too interested in the drink at all, so he sighed and gave his mentor a weak nod before turning his attention away again.

Really, he had other things he could have been doing besides wasting their money on ale or...whatever they were drinking. The stuff sure smelled like some kind of fermented liquid, and when Ainsley took a swig he made a face and forced the stuff down before pushing away his mug. "Augh, that's disgusting..." he muttered, then was readying himself for another sip (because he figured Quan would force him to at least finish the one pint) when he overheard someone at the table to their left.

"A labyrinth, Reira, a dark, underground, maze of a place! I tell ya, even'f there was a ghost of a chance that I see it again, ya couldn't pay me to take ano'er step in there!"

And the man went on to describe the place as "spooky" and "eerie" and with the strangest feeling of being watched despite being alone in such a place. He made mention of the alcoves where the dead were laid to rest, and the remains of the fine clothing that still clung to the skeletons, along with their finest jewelry. The woman named Reira seemed to made a face at that, but the old traveler ensured her that he didn't have the nerve to take anything from the bodies.

"Cursed, that lot of treasure!" he said with a bang of his fist on his table. The tavern was loud enough that such an act went unnoticed, though it certainly took Ainsley by surprise. "Their spirits would probably pry it out of your cold, dead hands if you tried to take any of it! The dead keep what's theirs, Reira. That's how it's always been."

And the man continued, excitedly sharing about the treasures that were in a deeper area of the labyrinth, in a room filled with floating balls of something that he couldn't explain. He said that he would have gone further if not for the blood moon, and so his story ended there rather abruptly. At the idea of going back he vehemently refused, saying something about never having seen such a place before the blood moon. The woman reacted almost as expected: she kind of freaked out and excused herself to likely get her head together. Ainsley took that chance to slip over to the man's table and, after offering to buy him a drink, ask him for directions.

It may have been due to the blood moon, but Ainsley was feeling that itch for adventure again. It may have made him a bit antsy to celebrate, but nights like this were almost perfect for adventuring...

The Entrance

Quote:
You've traveled deep into the wilderness, fighting some monsters, slinking by others, until at last you have arrived at the location the wounded man had described. The sun is barely above the horizon, painting the sky a blood red. To the East, the moon has risen; full and glowing with that odd amber red color. You can clearly see the entrance, it lays like a black hole on the side of a huge hill, and all around it is a flat grassy plain; no trees grow near it, nor are there any other hills nearby.

The entrance is made of stone, and there were once words carved into the archway above your head. Time though has caused them to become cracked and faded and all you can make out is the word at the end: "Fallen."
The stone archway holds no door and beyond lays a room that you can only see shadows in. From within comes a sudden breeze; a dusty and earthy scent fills your nose as the breeze passes you.

Go to The Hallway.

"You know, you really didn't have to come," Ainsley protested as he hacked away an offending, low-hanging tree branch.

"If I hadn't, you'd probably be lost by now. I'm helping you on your adventure, remember?"

The drunken Quan, who somehow didn't sound drunk anymore, trotted merrily behind Ainsley, who was doing all the work of navigating and finding the entrance to this "crypt", as the man had so put it. The area they were in was unfamiliar even to Quan, much to Ainsley's surprise, so they were almost just flying by the seat of their pants and hoping that the wounded man wasn't just crazy.

Soon enough, however, as they came upon a hill they could see a hug, black hole exactly as the man had described. "'Flat, with no trees' was what he said," Ainsley said with a huff as he looked on at the odd sight. "Just the one hill in a clearing."

"It does look a bit strange, but we didn't come all the way out here to just look. Move it, boy."

So the two pressed forward and eventually came to an archway with faded words inscribed into the stone. "'Fallen'," Quan answered when Ainsley looked in his direction. "It says 'Fallen.' We move forward carefully, understood? If this tunnel caves in, you and I will both be 'fallen,' exactly like what that archway says."

The teen would have laughed had Quan not looked as serious as he did, so the two proceeded forward into the tunnel. His eyes could only catch shadows in the distance, and every so often an earthy-smelling breeze would pass them by the deeper they moved inside.

The Hallway

Quote:
As you enter the crypt, you notice that it is unnaturally silent. You can't hear the sound of the wind or bugs anymore. If you look behind you, you can still see the plains soaked in red light; but they look farther away than they should, and there's too much darkness between you and the outside. Into the room you go. It is small and narrow, more like a hallway than a room. Statues of armored figures line the walls. If you take a closer look at them, you'll notice the statues that line the right wall have no eyes. While the statues on the left wall have carvings of wings on the wall behind them.

Opposite the entry way is another archway, this one has stairs leading down beyond it. The light in this hallway is dim, and the stairs themselves vanish into the dark. A light may be needed to explore this place.

You may go down the stairs, Go to Downwards.
Or you may leave Go to Quit.

The further in they went, the less Ainsley could hear. Rather...the less noise was being made? It was an unnatural sort of silence, the teen noted, and he looked warily at his mentor, who looked normal save for the sleepy eyes. Quan's grass green eyes were almost always alert in these sorts of situations, so it was a little weird that the man was as relaxed as he looked. Ainsley, on the other hand, couldn't do much else besides keep moving forward. It was his brilliant idea to come all the way out here anyway, so he had to keep moving, if only to save face. Quan would never let him hear the end of it if he chickened out now.

To calm himself a bit, Ainsley took a look around. The hallway they were in was lined with ornate statues on either side. On the one side, it looked as though someone had purposefully neglected to carve out the eyes, while the other side looked like someone tried a little too hard with the wings in the background. Whatever meanings were meant to be represented in the work was lost to the teen Orderite, who felt his nerves calm just a bit as he let his eyes just wander as they kept moving forward. Unfortunately, he stupidly made the mistake of glancing back toward the entrance.

"Doesn't it look...further away than it should be?" the young blonde asked, his nerves slowly creeping back.

Quan didn't even bother looking behind him. "Keep your eyes ahead, boy. I see another archway, I think..."

And sure enough, when Ainsley turned his attention forward he saw the archway that the older Orderite mentioned. Just beyond it were stairs that headed downward and vanished into the darkness. With his nerves and the idea of moving forward like he was being pressed by a silent dare that Quan was giving him, the "beyond" of the stairs just didn't look at all appealing. Ainsley's itch to adventure was all but gone by then, but he had to keep moving.

His small, tiny bit of pride was at stake, after all.

"You've got a light, right?"

"I always carry something for this kind of situation," came the answer, so Ainsley took the initiative and began to descend.

Downwards

Quote:
Light may be created by any Orderite mage, any Kiandri, Firani, Auedaun Dovaa/Drakein, and by using items. Fire Feathers also put out light. Or you can rp your characters making a torch, that works to. If you wish to do the adventure in the dark that's fine! Just be aware that your character won't see all the details and stuff!

As the stairs go down, the air gets chillier and the scent of dust and earth gets stronger. The walls of the stairwell are covered in carvings depicting battles. Some you can tell are between certain races and others are against dragons. But all involve death and violence. Once you reach the end of the stairwell, the corridor widens and you see a large room filled with statues. Along every wall are alcoves that contain a skeletons. Some of them have rusted armor others have rotted clothing, all have a weapon of some sort lying next to them. Above each alcove is a name carved into the rock. As you wander the long corridors of the Crypt, you see every wall is covered in alcoves and statues. The statues depict all races, and you wonder who they were. If you look close enough, you notice at the bottom of the statue is a name carved into the rock. And if you look hard enough, you can find that same name above a skeleton... Someone took the dead and carved statues of them, but there are so much more skeletons than there are statues. Who did this? And why? The silent walls hold no information on who built this place. Maybe deeper inside you'll find some clues...

As you are wandering, another thing catches your eye. The glimmer of gold. Forged gold is special, it never tarnishes, nor do the precious gems set in them. Every skeleton in here has something that shines, and flickers in the light. But should you steal from the dead?

If even one of the group steals from the Dead, Go to Combat!.
If everyone decides to leave the Dead in peace, Go to The Shrine.

"So, where's that light?" Ainsley asked as soon as he heard Quan walk beside him. A light rustling was heard as the two explorers stood in silence, then the rustling stopped and he heard his mentor quickly inhale and exhale.

"Well, we were out drinking and celebrating, so I guess I uh...didn't bring it."

If looks could kill, Ainsley's expression at this little announcement probably wouldn't have disintegrated Quan. Luckily, they were both in the dark and could see little more than shadows and silhouettes, so even if that was the case Quan wouldn't be able to see the one being given to him by his pupil.

"Never mind," was all that the young blonde said. He was, after all, just as ill-prepared for the same reason, so there really wasn't much he could say by way of reprimand. So the two navigated through a pitch black hallway and soon found themselves in a larger room. Ainsley's eyes had already adjusted enough to the darkness so he could see that there were more than just statues and things in this room. At the very least, he could make out the alcoves that the wounded man had mentioned. Besides the shape of a skeleton and a weapon, there wasn't much else for Ainsley to see in each alcove. Quan stayed silent as well, and the two quietly continued to navigate the large room.

And then Ainsley saw it. A little glimmer coming from a few feet to his left, inside one of the alcoves. When he was close enough to make out the shadows inside the alcove, he could see that this particular skeleton had on it a very beautiful, very ornate golden ring. Then he remembered the wounded man's story, and he inspected a few other alcoves and found similar pieces of jewelry in each one. A small smile crept onto the Orderite's face, and wanting to live a bit more comfortably he began to reach inside to pick out a piece of jewelry to pocket.

Quan stopped him though, and Ainsley could feel the seriousness in Quan's action by the intense grip his mentor had on his arm.

"What?" the blonde asked, trying to pull his hand away so he could make another grab for the jewelry. Quan didn't let go, and instead only tightened his grip. "It's not like they'll miss any of it," Ainsley defended himself.

"'The dead keep what's theirs,' remember?"

The phrase brought the wounded man's story back to the forefront of his mind, and he finally managed to shake of Quan's vice grip. Ainsley looked on at the jewelry, fighting the urge to reach out and take some as the thought of running into some kind of trouble in their state -- a drunk old man and a younger, inexperienced fighter -- wasn't at all pleasant. Not to mention they'd have to fight nearly blind, in almost pitch black darkness.

"Fine..." the teen said at last, and they pressed onward towards the exit. Perhaps next time, if he got the chance to come back...without Quan, of course.

The Shrine

Quote:
As you go deeper into the crypt, after fighting your way down or not, you come to a large door. It's the only door in the entire place. On either side of the door are statues of small Dragons.. or maybe Drakeins. They are the only Statues of their kind in here that you have seen. What is beyond the door? As you open it, you notice that the door is completely silent. No creaks or squeals at all... Which is odd, the rest of the crypt looked and smelled old as did this door, and old doors creak...

Peaking beyond the doorway you spy exactly what the man had. Huge shadows that flap about silently, completely black except for the odd sharp bird legs. Mixed in are floating balls of green and blue fire with vague skull shapes at the center. And yes, there is the chest! In fact there are 3 chests. One at the foot of each large statue. As you look at them, the majority of the status are covered in shadow, but you get a feeling that they look familiar.

Looking at them closely, you suddenly recognize all 3 of the Gods! This must be a shrine to them...

No matter what you do in this room, the Draugur and the Will-o-Wisps merely pass you by, just floating silently about the room. Should you try to touch them, your hands become chilled and numb for a bit as your hand passes through the creatures. It is oddly silent in here, and a feeling of deep sadness presses down upon you, but these chests are calling! Should you go to a chest that does not belong to your god, the chest will not open, but the one at the foot of your god does...

Drakeins of all clans except Diabi and Aeduan find the chest at the foot of Abronaxus' statue opens. The Diabi clan find the chest at Soudana's statue opens and the Aeduan Drakein find the chest at the base of Seren's statue opens.

Chest contains (no matter which one opens):
x2 Firani Dragon Tears and either a Shield of the Ancients, Arrow of Courage, or Bottle of Dreams. You chose which you want! Post in the finished adventure thread and make sure to specify which one you want!

You may now RP leaving, all the dead and will-o-wisps are quiet and nothing moves as you leave. But you get eh sense that eyes are watching you and it would be a very bad thing to disturb the dead right now....If you do try and take their loot, the dead wake up, take back their loot and chase you out.

"A door," Quan broke the silence as they continued on their way. Ainsley, who was still a bit upset at not being given the chance to do a small bit of grave robbing for their benefit, had gone completely silent as their little adventure continued.

Having been woken from his trance-like state, the blonde looked and indeed saw a door. There really wasn't much else to do except try to open it, but when it opened without so much as a sound Ainsley couldn't help but feel a bit wary about going inside this door as well. A part of him already wanted leave, another wanted to go back and try and take a few bits of jewelry to sell for some cash, and the other wanted to strangle Quan. But that last one was a bit off, so the teen merely heaved a sigh -- mostly to calm himself -- before stepping inside.

It was still dark, though there were strange...things...floating around all over the place.

"Don't touch them," Quan said in almost a whisper as he broke away from Ainsley and began to wander.

"Won't have to tell me twice," the teen said as he observed one that was simply floating past him. Ainsley let it pass, then began to wander about as well. The statues were as the wounded man described, and there were large shadows that were flapping about. Everything was quiet, and the more time they spent in the room the more Ainsley could feel a heaviness impress itself onto his chest. The feeling was similar to the feeling the teen got when a distant memory would revisit him in his dreams, and while it wasn't entirely unpleasant it just wasn't...comfortable.

The teen noticed the chests soon enough, though he only approached the one at the feet of a familiar statue towards his right. Even in the dark he could tell that the statue depicted their goddess, Seren, and its presence brought about a sense of familiarity and warmth to the teen.

"It's a shrine, I think?" he muttered aloud.

"Probably..." was all the input Quan gave as Ainsley opened the chest to find a nice little stash that he pocketed without a word. When he finished, Ainsley went to Quan and jabbed a thumb towards the exit.

"I feel like we might have overstayed our welcome," he said, to which Quan smirked.

"We're intruders, and you, a potential grave robber. I hope you found something good for all the trouble we went through to find nothing more than a shrine to the gods and goddesses that made the world we know today."

Ainsley didn't bother to defend himself, and instead just left things at that. He did find something good for their trouble, though he wasn't about to share. At least not right then. The two travelers found their way back out of the Crypt, past the floating things and the alcoves, back up the stairs and across the hallway before finally exiting.

Outside, the blood moon was shining as brightly as ever. It cast everything into its eerie, ominous light and, upon looking back, Ainsley noticed that the entrance to the Crypt was gone. There was no black hole, no archway, not even a mist to cover up the possibility of such an entrance even existing. For all anyone knew, it never did in the first place. Ainsley almost expected it, in all honesty, considering the way the wounded man had talked about such a place, so after staring at where the entrance ought to have been for a bit, he turned and faced forward once again.

Quan was strides ahead of him soon enough, so the Orderite pushed the Crypt and his experience in it to the back of his mind and followed after his mentor. It wasn't likely he'd visit again, even if the entrance did happen to show up again.
