 Our Mission The Dorough Lupus Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit organization. The Foundation's goals are to aide in research, educate the public and to provide financial assistance to organizations helping individuals living with Lupus who cannot afford treatment.
The Dorough Lupus Foundation was established as the direct result of and in memoriam for the tragic loss of Caroline Dorough-Cochran to the devastating disease, Lupus. In response to public interest generated upon the web-site of Howard Dorough (a.k.a. Howie D. of the Backstreet Boys) and at the urgings of prominent doctors within the field, Howard Dorough and family established the Dorough Lupus Foundation. The goal was to create a financial avenue for "donors" to send in charitable contributions to be allocated to organizations and individuals dedicated to the research, treatment and public education of the disease Lupus.
Angelia M. Herring took on the awesome responsibility of heading the foundation as the Executive Director and through a series of fundraising events and sponsorships, has been able to generate enough financial support to benefit the aforementioned organizations and individuals. The overwhelming lack of support, both financially and emotionally for those afflicted with this disease, has brought the Dorough family together to help give others what was unavailable for their beloved Caroline.
The Dorough Lupus Foundation has made tremendous strides in their primary years through their annual events, such as the Cruise and the celebrity filled Concert and auctions, all of which generate funds allocated by the foundation for the financial support of research, treatment and public education on Lupus. Additionally, the Dorough Lupus Foundation has established and implemented support groups for those affected by the disease and help sponsor financially stricken families to enable them to support and care for their loved ones while receiving medical treatments.
It is the objective of the Foundation to make our organization the most prominent and compassionate Lupus Advocacy group around the globe, aiding and supporting those effected and/or affected by Lupus.SponsorsAmerican Airlines

>> What is lupus?
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease, which causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood and kidneys. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials.
In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and it own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes anti-bodies directed against itself.
>> Is lupus contagious?
Lupus is NOT infectious, rare or cancerous.
>> Is lupus easy to diagnose?
No. Lupus can be very difficult to diagnose because it mimics other diseases and illnesses. Some symptoms of lupus can be transient joint and muscle pain, chronic fatigue, a rash caused or made by sunlight, low grade fevers, hair loss, pleurisy, appetite loss, sores in the nose or mouth or pain sensitivity of the fingers to the cold.
>> How many people have lupus?
A study by Bruskin/Goldring conducted in 1994 showed that about 1.4 to 2 million people have been diagnosed with lupus. It is estimated that more than 16 thousand Americans will develop lupus each year. Lupus is more prevalent than AIDS, Sickle Cell Anemia, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis and Cystic Fibrosis.
>> What causes lupus?
Although the specific cause of lupus is not known, scientists suspect that individuals are genetically predisposed to lupus, and know that environmental factors such as infections, antibodies, ultraviolet light, extreme stress and certain drugs play a critical role in triggering lupus.
>> Who is more likely to have lupus?
Lupus is often referred to as a "woman's disease. Many men have the disease also. Lupus can occur at any age, however it occurs 10 to 15 times more frequently among adult females than male, usually during the child bearing years. Lupus is more prevalent in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and Asians. The reason for the ethnic selection is not clear.
>> If I do have lupus, what's the prognosis?
The idea that lupus is generally a fatal disease is not consistent with the facts. In 1955, half the patients died within 4 years, and by 1969, half the patients died within 10 years of being diagnosed.
Today, more than 90 percent of all lupus patients live more than 10 years, although--if organ-threatening disease is present-- only 60 percent survive 15 - 20 years. Most individuals can look forward to a normal lifespan.
