The Challenge
Rumors of strange creatures and places appearing have popped up ever since the Moon began to glow an amber red. People call this event the Blood Moon. Once such place was recently found by your friends. When the Blood Moon is full, a passage appears on Ayr that leads to a strange swampy glade. Gathering together a group of people, you've traveled to this place to test yourself. Your friend challenged you to a test. They said that deep with in the swamp, if you follow the twisting pathway, past the dead white tree and across a fallen statue, you'll come to a glade surrounded by a ruin. In the middle of this glade is a black flower that pulses with a dim purple glow. They have challenged you to go and pick this flower and bring it back as proof of your courage. If you don't, they said, you're a coward!

You may have just one person be challenged, or multiple and you all meet up outside the cliff that the challenger told you opened up to reveal the swamp.

Go to Below the Cliff

Shifting to sit low in the seat, Erionda pushed the heals of her feet forward. Guiding the cowardly Hastar to a halt with a soft proclaimed 'whoa'. Uassae and Lanzecki lowered their flight towards the ground. Pulling up beside Erionda.

The hybrid bit her lower lip, she had heard children and adults challenging each other to strange dares. Much like her previous adventure through the crypt, the strange tales seemed to be true then. Why wouldn't it be true now. Even if she herself wasn't being challenged, couldn't she take this tradition on herself and pretend someone she knew had challenged her?

What Erionda hadn't expected was the strange location she had found herself in. Never before had she seen shallow water with plant life surviving around and inside it to this extent. Kicking her right foot out of the stirrup and over the saddle Erionda shifted. Pressing her belly into the leather seat. Removing her other foot the Hybrid lowered herself to the ground. Taking back the reigns.

As far as she could remember from the people talking. There was a black flower inside she was supposed to collect. She wasn't sure on the properties of the flower. Or what made it so special to start with, but if she could prove she wasn't a weak and frightened young woman. What would be the harm in trying.

Looking skyward as an shadow passed overhead guided with the wind, whipping her hair into her face. Using both of her hands Erionda held her long hair back away from her face. Her shield and sword rested comfortably against her back for ease in traveling.

"This is incredibly stupid and I can't believe you're dragging me away from work for this." Maslin grumbled for what had to be the dozenth time. He had zero interest in the rumored magical flower they were supposed to be acquiring. He had even less interest in traipsing through a swamp on Ayr to go get it. The peisio mage was not the adventurous sort and he would happily have let Lazuli go off alone were the distance required not to great.

Not that he did not love his bonded, it was simply that Maslin trusted Lazuli to know his own limits. The peisio drakein had proven more than capable of going off on his own and getting into and out of small scraps before. Lazuli was more than he appeared to most people .

In response lazuli just whistled as he trotted forward and reminded Maslin
Your cousin dared us, it would be wrong to back down. Lazuli had been eagar to take the challenge and prove himself and his bonded to the cocky younger boy. Meeru would regret being so brash with his words when they returned victorious.

Maslin just sighed and shook his head as he followed after Lazuli. Meeru was a younger cousin of his, who's family lived in the small mining town the caravan had been passing through. He hadn't thought too much of Maslin and Lazuli's medals or their heroism and had dared them to prove their bravery by finding this supposed flower.

Maslin had been willing to let the word's pass but Lazuli was still smarting over a similar experience not too long ago and had accepted before he could brush his cousin's words off. Now they were stuck trying to find the damned flower, and return with it or return with proof that they'd at least gone searching for it.

Maslin for his part would be content to fill a jar with swamp water and return home.

That's cheating Lazuli pointed out. I smell something familiar up ahead, on the other side of the cliff. the wind made it hard for lazuli to know exactly what the scent he had picked up was but his instinct told him it was oen he knew and was not afraid of.

Kioda's wings flapped against the strong winds of Ayr. She wished she herself was a feathered Drakein, but as it stood fate had made her remarkably dull. Even her colors weren't as pretty as many other Drakein these days. She was a solid green blending in anywhere was hard enough. Her sister didn't have to bother about teasing her, calling her weak or fearful. Just because she hated the blood thirsty birds meant nothing! NOTHING!

The ysali grumbled as she flew overhead, teal eyes searching the swamp. She was sure this was the location her sister had described. Maybe once she returned with the flower she could shove the measly annoying thing in her face and demand that now she go get one.

Chuckling at the idea Kioda's eyes fell upon a familiar trio. She knew the female hybrid well enough and her traveling companions. As her shadow passed over them she noticed the female's eyes travel up to her.

Convenient, she would have company while going on this ludicrous trip. Tucking her wings in the Drakein took a nose dive towards the ground. Her wings unfurled just in time to catch the wind before she hit the ground.

"Erionda!? What b-" Turning her head abruptly Kioda sniffed the air that blew into her direction. It was the smell of a familiar Drakein. At least one she had met in the past.

Ignoring her current conversation with the female hybrid, Kioda lowered her body. Stalking towards the scent ready to pounce the moment it came into view.

Erionda beamed as she took in the site of the green Drakein. Perhaps now she would have the chance to perform a challenge on someone! She waited until the Drakein had landed before she tried to speak. Kioda beating her to that. Then as if Erionda had suddenly disappeared from view the Drakien was now interested in something else.

The hybrid shrugged. She was used to Kioda becoming easily distracted. The Drakein had even wandered off in the middle of a conversation once and hadn't returned. Her chance at challenging Kioda was missed. She herself still wanted to go through the test and prove to herself she wasn't fearful. Maybe she could even bring it back to Kilian. She wondered if he would even appreciate the dark flower.

Turning towards Uassae and Lanzecki, Erionda shrugged. Her eyes scanned the area ahead for whatever it was that would open this 'secret passage'

Walking ahead of his bonded it was Lazuli who spotted Kioda first, he had hazy memories of a drakein that spelled like this. She had been the first feral to not attack him and to compliment him. " Kioda?" she looked so different now and much bigger, although he too had grown much since they last met. those that lay beyond the other Drakein were forgotten for a moment as Lazuli was distracted by meeting this lost friend of sorts.

Quote:
You have arrived at the foot of the cliff. The moon hasn't risen just yet, but it should soon. All about you is darkness, broken only by the far off starts above you and the pale mists swirling about even though there is no breeze. The night is silent; no insects buzz, no dragons call out, there is no sound except what you make. As the Blood Moon rises in the East, casting a reddish amber glow upon the swirling mists, you hear a rumblings sound and soon the earth beneath you shakes and quivers. The cliff suddenly breaks apart and a howling wind rushes out from the newly opened crack. As suddenly as it began, it stops. And silence descends once more. Before you is a large crack in the cliffs... shall you enter and test your courage?

If you enter, Go to Passage.
If you chicken out, Go to Flee

Maslin had broken into a jog at the silhouette of a lone drakein in the distance, that almost always spelled trouble for Lazuli and himself. Fate seemed to determined to make this meeting no less troublesome than the rest. As the blood moon rose it bathed the area in an unsettling red light. Maslin had only just caught up to his bonded when the ground beneath his feet became unstable

I told you this was a terrible idea the hybrid snapped through the bond, holding tight to his staff int he face of the sudden strong wind and also lest he need use magic against the nearby feral.

Kioda's wings flapped open excitedly. She couldn't quite remember the name of this Drakein but she remembered him mixed with water. Along with her sore muscles, rumbling a welcome greeting Kioda chirruped happily. It helped that he called out to her with her name, he was certainly one she had met before. Was it on Serenia.

The Ysali shook her head, it didn't matter. A friend was always a happy thing to see. "What brings you here!? Did you come to find a flower too?" Her teal eyes shone brightly, her eyes turned to the Dovaa that followed after them. Wait, he was a bonded!? Had she known this before? She sniffed at Lazuli, he didn't smell any different.

Ruffling her wings Kioda shivered as the ground under her feet started to shake. Her eyes grew bright at the prospect of the challenge beginning. Pumping her wings quickly as the ground opened up like a large mouth. Her eyes whirled as she regarded everything around her.

Trumpeting her excitement Kioda's wings tucked against her body. The earth pulling her down into the crack in the cliffs. Hitting the ground Kioda pranced forward whistling back for Lazuli to join her.

Erionda heard strange noises as the footfall of others approaching caught her ears. She didn't have much time to calculate what she was hearing before a large gust of wind tore at her senses. Blocking sound from entering her ears. Covering them to protect her sensitive hearing from the wind. Erionda ignored the way it picked her air up and twirled it around her head. Her eyes carefully trained on an opening that formed in the side of the cliff.

Was that the place she was supposed to enter. Her eye's snapped to Lanzecki as he was the first to enter the unknown. It didn't surprise her he was often the first to enter anything. He was far too headstrong for his own good. Uassae tailed behind the Ayrala Keindred, his hide shifting to light the way under the blood red moon.

Shrugging her shoulders the Aiskala hybrid could do nothing more than press forward into the cavern. The sooner she got in and out the better. Even if she didn't have someone to challenge.

Lazuli had been startled by everything that had happened thus far and yet the mention of the flower had washed away any fears he had had. Clearly Kioda was also seeking to prove herself here. He bobbed his head in a nod as he caught up to the other drakein. " Yes, we were challenged." They would not fail either if lazuli had anything to say about it, even if he could feel his bonded growing more irritated by the moment.

Maslin was decidedly unhappy with the recent turn of events. While the feral drakein was not hostile, that did little to make up for the fact that a cliff had cracked open and no one else seemed bothered by this. Even if it was just an illusion it did not bode well for the sorts of things that could be ahead.

At least it appeared that the trio was not alone, there was the distinct sound of footsteps and some faint light, further in. With the drakein distracted by each other Maslin had no choice but to call out " who's there?" if they were friendly perhaps they could travel together for the safety that numbers brought. if they were foes then it was better to face them here where escape was easy to find instead of locked deep inside a cliff.

Passage
The crack in the cliff is filled with sharp rocks and is barely lit. Only a faint red glow comes from above where the cliff's broken halves meet. As you stumble your way through, you are continuously surrounded by a wailing wind that howls by you as it flees the Swamp. The further along you travel the stronger the smell of decaying life and stagnant water gets. Finally you reach the end of the cave. Before you lies a swamp like no other you have seen before.

There are trees here, but most of them look like they are dying; drooping and covered in hanging moss as if they don't have the will to stand up straight any longer. Strange pale blue balls of fire float about the swamp, meandering about on unseen paths. Small red dots flicker towards you then vanish, eyes of the animals that live here. As you walk forward, you notice that there is no boundary between land and water. grass grows on the water, making it look like land; while the land is often submersed under the water so that to follow the path before you, your feet get soaked. Strange hooting calls echo about, and you feel as if many eyes are upon you.

In the distance you spot a pale white tree, shining through the gray-green mists that lurk above the water and obscure everything.

You may continue forward, Go to Path
or you may flee, Go to Flee.

A voice calling out to her reached her ears. Stopping her progress into the cave Erionda turned around. Raising an eyebrow at the strange sound in the wind, the voice was familiar but she couldn't quite put a finger on where she had heard it from.

"Does it matter who I am? Shouldn't you introduce yourself first?" The hybrid was never one to give her name out. And certainly not recently after she had been introduced to the world. To many seemed to remember her, by her name alone. That was enough to sent the hybrid on edge, to force her to be more cautious.

Uassae rumbled, not many knew him to be bonded to Erionda and it was safer for him to check on the voices than it was for her. Walking forward, taking the light with him Uassae approached Maslin. Chirping when the familiar Dovaa came into view. Sending the image back to Erionda.

"It's only you. Pardon us, we can never be to careful when we travel." Uassae trumpeted in greeting watching Lazuli.

"Fantastic!" Kioda chirped playfully jumping around before turning to follow everyone into the cave. "At least now we wont be doing it alone and isn't there safety in numbers? I think I've heard a two legger say that once."

Prancing on ahead Kioda's eyes followed about the caverns. Wincing at the smell of decaying bodies around her. The wind didn't have any effect against her hearing. Even if it did sound like moaning. Maybe the moaning was dying blood thirsty birds. She would be more than satisfied with that. Every once in a while. Erionda attempted to shake her head free of the horrible stench catching in her nostrils. Even breathing through her mouth wasn't helping her at all. "It smells in here." She complained unable to see the white tree in the distance from the way her eyes watered at the smell.

" Things have been more difficult for you lately as well then?" Maslin inquired. The hybrid man sighed and tried to focus on moving closer to the familiar drakein. Even though each stepped seemed to take him towards an increasingly worse smell. At least he wouldn't be suffering alone. Unfortunately this meant he was also the only voice of reason and would be shouted down by the others if he tried to insist they turned back from this increasingly dangerous looking quest.

Maslin could fight and hold his own but he rarely willingly put himself in danger and this situation had' bad s**t will go down' written all over it.

Lazuli offered a cheery whistle in greeting to Uassae before turning his head to look at Kioda again. They were on an adventure and they were a large mighty group and nothing was going to bring the Peisio's spirit's down. " We will get through this quickly together," he insisted, picking up his place to keep up with the female drakein he remembered fondly.

Groups luck is over 100... whatcha gunna do bout that
Path
As you walk along the damp winding trail that meanders through the swamp, you sense something following you. Before you is the pale white tree that you were told to pass so next must be a fallen statue. As you look about the mists swirl about and you see in ahead of you a huge shattered stone facing staring at you. Then the mists swirl and its hidden again. Was this perhaps the statue? Every other direction has trees and more trees. As you stand by the pale tree that glows in the red moon light you hear a sound. Spinning around you spot ::

If the group does not include any battlers: You turn around and see a group of Will-o-Wisps floating towards you. :

The mists suddenly flare up and you spot many glowing balls of blue and green flames float towards you. You notice that there seems to be skull like shapes inside the balls of cold fire.

If Group's total LUK is between 1 and 9: You spot 4 Dunkels (LUK 2)
The dark shadows suddenly appear from the mist and 4 large Dunkels come flapping towards you, letting out a shrill scream.

If Group's total LUK is between 10 and 19: You spot 4 Will-0-Wisps (LUK 10) and (if the group has 18 or 19 LUK) 1 Animated Pumpkin
The mists suddenly flare up and you spot 4 glowing balls of blue and green flames float towards you. You notice that there seems to be skull like shapes inside the balls of cold fire.

If Group's total LUK is between 20 and 29: You spot 3 Borlarn (LUK 20) or 3 Borgnah (LUK 25)
Silently and quickly, the shadows come charging towards you. In the reddish light of the Blood moon you see the deadly slim shapes of the Borlan, deadly armored hunters. Or You see the large shape of a huge furry spider with glowing golden eyes.

If Group's total LUK is greater than 29: You spot 3 Draugur (LUK 30)
From the mists emerge the shape of flowing black shadows. Even though they enter the red light of the Blood Moon, you can only see black shadows in the shape of a large bird.. if a bird drooped and rustled like a cloak in the wind. It's the Draugur! You remember the rumors of how they are the spirits of the angry dead who possess the carrion birds that flock to battle fields...

Kioda snorted shaking her head back and forth at the smell. Her teal eyes on the blue Drakein. Snorting to flush her nose of the worsening smell she nodded to Lazuli. "The faster we get through this mess the better. I don't think my nose can handle this smell anymore. It's already burning."

Lifting her head from below her withers Kioda huffed. "Look it's the white tree it shouldn't be to much father beyond this point. Right? I can't remember the exact location we are supposed to go."

Erionda's brows pulled together as she caught the end of Maslins phrase. "It's because the leaders chose to subject us in front of everyone! Now they all know my face." Erionda let out a deep sigh as she calmed the temper that had flared from her short outburst. "Sorry, I haven't had many good encounters with other Dovaa these days. Nevermind that, I'm guessing you've already been challenged to this mess? Shame I would have pressed the challenge on you for the fun of doing so. I can challenge Kilian, he's not here..." Erionda trialed off at the sound of feathered wings flapping.

Shifting her stance into that of a more guarded posture Erionda glanced skyward. Three strange black birds were headed towards them. All shadowed with the light of the moon against their back. "Kioda watch yourself up there. I don't know anything about them but this is Ayr. It's nearly as bad as Aisko."

Grunting as if her words had fallen on deaf ears Erionda let her magic rush over her like water. Crystals of ice formed all about her feet. Sharp pillars of ice rose form the ground as Uassae took flight. Moving so his body was over one of the three attacking creatures. He would drive it towards the ground. Plunge it's body into the ice if luck was on his side and it was weaker than him.

Maslin's mood was no better than Erionda's. Peisio he might be but that didn't mean he enjoyed slogging through a swamp and having water pour over the tops of his boots and soak his feet. Not knowing what danger might lay ahead it was unwise for Maslin to waste attention and magic trying to keep his feet dry. Keeping an eye on the damned floating balls of fire and the glimpses of animals nearby was his main concern.

Upon reaching the pale tree Maslin suddenly wished he'd prepared better for this. The damn mist was going to make going both forward and back difficult, especially if the other landmarks blended in with it unlike the tree. If they had brought rope or something to make markers with it'd be easier but of course not.

" I didn't even accept this damn challenge," Maslin muttered to no one in particular. He still loved Lazuli and would always be close to his bonded but sometimes he wished the drakein was a little more laidback and closer to his own personality.

All that could be done was to continue on through the mist as the damned blood moon shone it's red light upon the hazy swamp in Ayr.

The scales that made up Lazuli's crest rose and the drakein snarled as dark shadow beasts appeared in the air. He was unfamiliar with the creatures but he knew they were a threat.

We outnumber them greatly Maslin noted soothingly through the bond. For his part the mage flung out his right arm in which he held the scepter he had reluctantly been wielding for nearly the pas decade. From the weapon sprung a whip of blazingly bright light that swiftly coiled itself around one of the flying shadows.

Kioda bellowed from deep within her chest. Eager to take to the skies for battle she spread her wings soaring upward as quickly as she could. Her jaw's aiming to snap at the first of the three creatures. Failing as it dodged out of her way Kioda flicked her tail, changing her course twisting as she moved and caught hold of the first best. Ripping and tearing into it. Crashing into the ground activating her power. Vines burst from the ground to choke her opponent. Satisfied when she figured the creature was dead.
