There came a hard knock on Finn's door. There was an obvious purpose behind it, but it was mostly because he didn't know if Finn would be sleeping and, if he was, how heavy of a sleeper he was.
"Finn? You in?" He gave the other man half a moment's pause to answer before he continued on anyway. "Come on, stop moping and get out here, we're going to beat s**t up!"

Finn wasn't asleep, but he was at least lying down, so it did take him a few moments to sit up, swing his legs off of the side of the bed, and stride towards the door, throwing it open to reveal the short haired and now facially scruffy man on the other side, a lit cigarette dangling from his lips. He took a long drag, reached up to remove it between two fingers, and blew the smoke out into the hallway, pretty much directly at Ripley's face. He scrutanized the other man for maybe five seconds total, eyes narrowing slightly, mouth parting as though to make some kind of witty retort to the moping comment. Instead all he said was. "Sure. Why the ******** not. I can test out how well my arm healed."

Ripley's eyes narrowed as the smoke was blown practically into his face, but he resisted the urge to cough. No, he wasn't about to let him have that victory! His resolve didn't last too long though, as his lungs insisted and he let out a small cough as he turned away.
"Good, this way then~" He was about to make it down the hall but paused suddenly, turning on his heel to face Finn again. "I don't care that you smoke. If you want lung problems on top of the giant bugs, that's none of my business. But please don't do that again." Ripley took great care to sound pleasant and his eyes even thinned to continue the illusion, but it was clear as day to anyone that there was a very subtle or else I'll put it out on your face to it as well. At least he could deny it, because he had been nothing but polite.
"Anyway, I thought we could do with the 'Shadow Run'. Never done it myself, but it sounds like the go-to if you want to hit something." The mild threat to his voice had dropped and in it's place remained that pleasant tone. He really did want to hit something, though.

Finn followed the other man, strolling out into the hallway and swinging the door shut behind him, checking that it was locked before leaving. He hadn't given two shits about Ripley's cough, and gave even less about whether the smoke bothered the other man. At the death trainee's pause, however, Finn stopped too, turning towards him with eyebrows raised and a mostly unimpressed look on his face. And then he smiled, his own eyes just as cold as always. "Whatever you say, Ripples." The subtle threat to the other mans tone of course, did not go unnoticed. Finn actually gave even less then less then two shits about that as well, unsurprisingly, but he'd likely do as the other man asked, which was mostly due to the fact that it wouldn't be nearly as funny the second or third time as it was the first, so what would be the point? He could strive for other means to piss off his friends. Stretching his arms out above his head as they walked, he let his joints, stiffened from lying around idle, pop and creak, letting out a half yawn-half sigh before he let them fall back to his sides. "Nah, haven't done it yet either. Hitting things sounds about perfect to me right now." It would, at least, be a good means of releasing some pent up frustrations, before they built up for too long and became dangerous. "How's your neck?"

"Thank you, Huckleberry ." It wasn't as horrific of a nickname, but hey, it made him feel better. That was really all that mattered to him essentially. It was the same for whether or not his threat was listened to; he gave it, which made him feel better, and if it were to happen again, well...at least he had warned him.
"Hey, would you look at that...we agreed on something!" He tossed a grin over his shoulder, except he still turned a little bit at the waist to keep him from using his neck too much. The bandages had come off but the scar and the ugly bruises remained, though the worst of it was hidden by his turtle necked sweater. At the mention of his wound though, he brought his hand up to gingerly touch it.
"Better. Not perfect, but better." The Trainee rounded a corner and started down another hallway, having the map to the training area laid out in his head. "And you? How's your arm? Your burns?"Seussi THOUGHT OF A BETTER NICKNAME biggrin

Oh ******** Jesus Christ. Huckleberry. Finn leveled a cold gaze on Ripley, and took another long drag on his cigarette. It might have looked like, for just a moment, that he was going to blow it in the other mans face again. And then he turned and blew it out straight ahead instead. Because friends. Or something. "You'd probably find you'd agree with me more if you finally came to the realization that I am always right." He shot back at the man, lips curling up into a vicious grin that bared teeth, before glancing back Ripley's way, and noting that he was still moving a tad gingerly, so probably not quite mended up just yet. "The arms out of it's bandages, healed up, but still..." He lifted it up, eyes dropping, and for a moment he swore he could still see the insect leg jutting through it. "It's not as strong as it was. Need to get the muscles working again." As for the burns.... "All gone. Like a bad sun burn." He followed along beside the death trainee, sort of recognizing the layout of the hallway, but not really. He'd just trust Ripley to get them to their destination.

"Is that so?" Ripley caught the vicious grin and returned it with one of his own, albeit he put a lot more emphasis on making it light. Finn's display of dominance was not going to phase him, and it likely never would. "Well, we'll see I guess. So far, you're questionable at best." Another grin, this one a little wider and definitely showing more of his own teeth.
"That's great to hear! Your hair looks good short, by the way. Makes you look ruggish." He hadn't meant to be teasing, but Finn certainly looked a lot more menacing now than he did with the longer hair. "I'm sure this training will help us both, then. I'm still a little stiff myself." It was good of Finn to trust him, and Ripley didn't let him down. He lead his friend down the hallways and right to the training grounds without getting lost even once. There was a reason he had wandered with that stupid little stick map for so long.
Because it worked.
"Well, here we are." He gestured to the massive door that lead to the Shadow run. "It's a Sun training mission, but I figure it'll do us just fine." As he spoke he fixed his gloves, then tried to stretch his neck. "We just have to make it through five waves of shadowlings, apparently. It's supposedly all very fast...if you falter even once, you're done." It sounded interesting, though honestly he was nervous; so far he hadn't done so well with the battling thing.
"There's no golem though, so if we're overcome..." He let that thought hang in the air.

Sun Hunter SHADOW RUN General Information The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

The idle chatter continued as they worked their way to the course. There was a reason Finn got along well with Ripley, and it was for much the same reason he got along with Jack, and to some extent, with Fini. Anything he dished out, they could take, and along with it were willing to dish it straight back at him. At the mention of his hair, Finn's eyebrows rose. "Ah yes it seems to have brought out my more roguishly handsome qualities." He agreed. "Glad you noticed." He winked at the other man, and that small motion itself could have meant almost anything, or nothing. Soon enough they'd arrived at their destination, and Finn listened as Ripley explained what they were meant to do. The part where he mentioned they might be overwhelmed, and they would not be using golems gave Finn pause to stare at him, until Trynt was summoned to hand. "Well then. I guess we better not ******** this up, then." And then he was throwing himself into the course. When the first few shadowlings leapt out towards him, he was ready, and he swung his lance around so that it's sharpened, bladed spikes came in contact with them, slicing through them and leaving them to disintegrate back into nothing. It was just like being in a very familiar, and very awesome, video game. He even had the right weapon for it. Status Wave: 1 Attack Dmg: 3 Total Shadowlings taken out: 3 Recoveries left: 0

”I’m sure you’re beating the girls back now~” It was hard to tell how he meant that, and at best he sounded distracted. There was preparations for the training going on, and he was more apt to watch them rather than banter on about Finn’s rugged good looks. Though he did catch the wink, and he did flash a grin in response for all the trouble.
“I make no promises.” Ripley more than acknowledged his terrible luck with training courses, unfortunately. “Good luck.” And he meant it. Wilhelm was summoned and he joined the course hot on Finn’s heels. The Moon seemed intent on carving their path forward, and so Ripley fell in to natural step behind, catching those that tried to sneak up on them as well as the ones that snuck past Finn’s defenses.
Wilhelm swung and hissed through the air, tearing through shadowlings left and right.
“They weren’t kidding when they said this was intense!” Ripley yelled over the shriek of the shadowlings.

There were a lot of shadowlings. That was the first thing Finn noticed once he had literally thrown himself head first into the fray. Many of them were sneaking past him or trying to come in from behind, or to attack him while his attentions were elsewhere. It was almost completely overwhelming, and he began to fall back, swinging his weapon in a wide arc to take out one in particular that had jumped right at him. He scoffed out a laugh back towards Ripley, lance held up between two hands, almost using it like a shield against their attackers, pushing back any that got too close. "Ya. That's one way of describing it. Sure." Status Wave: 2 Attack Dmg: 1 Total Shadowlings taken out: 4 Recoveries left: 0

It was one misstep that did it. One single misstep. His foot slipped on something (was that Finn's heel, or was the ground uneven?), and he glanced away for one moment to try and regain his balance, but it was already too late. The shadowlings saw the opening and pounced, burying the trainee under layers of shadowed bodies.Status Wave: 2 Attack Dmg: GOOD JOB a*****e YOU FAILED AGAIN Total Shadowlings taken out: 7 Recoveries left: 0

Ripley fell beneath the swarm of shadowlings, and it didn't take Finn long to follow, now with nothing to stop them from surrounding him, their numbers much too overwhelming for him to handle on his own. <******** son of a bi--" Was all he managed to get out before he was completely overcome, his body buried beneath their masses. Ripley woke up some time later, groggy as anything and covered in runic bandages. Yet he felt okay, through all that. Enough to sit up and stretch his sore limbs to their current limits. Well, that was fun. Actually that hadn't been fun. Not at all. Being swarmed sucked. Wait. Did Finn--? Yup, there he was. The Death Trainee fixed his friend with a blank stare.
"Want to go again?" He asked, breaking in to a smile.

Did Finn want to go again? As he also sat up, brown eyes blinking open, he stretched his arms out to each sides, then swung them forward, then bent them at the elbows, fingers flexing. "Of course I want to go again." He said. "Can't let those little assholes think they're capable of taking us down that easily." The smile he returned towards his friend was just as cold and dark as usual, as he pushed himself slowly up to his feet.
