Listless and lost. Coasting through ruinous lifestyles and all the drivel and rot they left behind, like wayward markers on an open sea. That was how Alois defined Destiny City through the lenses of ceaseless night - nothing but a sullen wasteland home to those too far rotten to maintain that coveted wholesome image. And in a sense the senshi perpetuated that myth of completion, perfection, perpetuation. He didn't like it much, but...

Ever since he found Ida on that fateful day, he'd realized his attempts to alter the course of those around him was utterly pointless. No need, no reason. No benefit.

He hated it, but swallowed it all the same - for the ocean had its own means of purging its waters.

Only days had passed since he forsook the visage of Bischofite, the force he considered harrowing and powerful until the wool was lifted from his eyes. Now it simply withered to a mask-like state - a second skin he might dawn should he feel the inclination toward mischievous encounters. But why fight anymore? Why allow swaths of chaos to envelop him when nothing came of it?

But Alois hadn't the luxury to dwell on such thoughts, not tonight. Not amidst the sickly street lamps and their jaundiced glow, which neutered the faces of the masses to nothing more than sallow skin stretched over a warped frame. And perhaps that's all people were to him now: taxidermied rejects perpetuated on an autonomous frame. Curious it was, to evaluate others in a steampunk horrorshow concept. It coaxed a smile out of him, but nothing more. Just another passing fancy borne from a frivolous mission.

Brick walls parted abruptly into an alley yawning open like the mouth of a leviathan. A brick arch framing a wrought-iron gate barred his path, and for a moment he considered its uncanny resemblance to the alleys he'd prowled in Europe. He considered climbing the gate, fiddling with the lock using his switchblade, digging under it somehow, but all that work for some meager hunch seemed entirely unnecessary. What senshi lurked in the barred passageways smattered across the city? What Negaverse officer camped such a location in hopes of running across a senshi? With a dejected sigh, he turned away from the gate and departed towards the equally barren main street.

Footsteps caught his attention easily enough, and Alois peered past the brick and mortar corner to search for its origin. No civilians stood in his line of sight - at least, he wouldn't initially classify her as such. The blonde wore clothes far too formal, far too fantastical, for a spectator in the war. However, he wouldn't have classified her as a participant were it not for the curious whip she brandished. And if he listened carefully... It sounded as though she addressed another.

A cheshire grin crept across his features as he sought a better view of the affair.

we discussed this a while back but tsui and schörl were gonna duke it out with a certain spectator, in case you forgot!

Another day, another dollar, another run in with the Negaverse.

The Senshi of Tigers may have taken up a part time job, but that was always a secondary job to her. Running the cash register and helping Krishna set up bouquets and floral arrangements did put money in the bank and helped her gain some necessary experience and people skills, but Gwendolyn Caspian's heart was always set on her senshi duties. And it seemed like Eternal Sailor Tsui didn't have to go too far to find herself within the presence of a Negaverse officer, one that rung bells within her head and reminded her that she had made a name for herself within their ranks.

Not necessarily a good name, but Tsui was alright with such a reputation for now. She managed to make it a few feet away from Padma's Bouquet before running into Lieutenant... no, Captain Schörl, and it was hard not to remember their last run in. One of them ended up in the freezing cold river, and as aquatic as tigers were, it wasn't this senshi.

"Good to see you've survived your little dip," Tsui said, genuinely meaning that part even though she could not wipe the smug grin from her face. She hadn't meant for the fight to end that way, despite being enemies, but now that she was alive, it was likely that she might have held some residual anger towards her, and Tsui couldn't blame her. "Let me guess... you're after revenge, right? Because I totally wouldn't blame you if you held a grudge over that."

Which likely meant a fight was inevitable, and that was alright with Tsui. There were no rivers or bridges here, and as far as she knew, no civilians. A good throwdown was always on Tsui's to-do list, it seemed.

The captain had been making rounds in the crappy neighborhood that surrounded Easy Street and the few shops that clung to life there. There were some dives and decent undertow joints that she was familiar with from her biker and goth acquaintances, and teh few street artists that she liked to keep up on the work of. That there was a sudden feel of a senshi nearby was just a bonus, and she sought it out immediately for identification and reconnaissance if nothing else.

Well, well, well.

It hadn't been until Carnelian had picked her up off the street that she'd learned what the white-and striped fur scout was named, but Schörl hadn't forgotten it since then. "Glorious White Tiger, wasn't it?"

"It's been a while, Tsui. Come, nothing so paltry as 'revenge'. We were playing last time, remember? More of the same- I want to see if I can catch the tooth or catch the tail." The captain whorled her hand like a presentment, but it was indicating Tsui from head to foot like a prize.

"And a fine tail it still is. What shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?"

"Grudges are for children. I promise that I won't go easy and I'm not going to let you leave without a little fun, so don't run. What do you say?"

Oh, how lucky was he, to have witnessed a meeting between friend and foe alike. Idly he wondered if their boiling interactions would draw him into the mix - if he would succumb to a demise born from crossfire, or if they might use him as stakes to heighten their individual resolves. He marveled at the irony of a senshi rescuing a plainclothes Negaverse agent, or a captain attempting to rip out his starseed to prove a point. Or maybe just to bait the other senshi. What a trite demise - still, he didn't have his choice over how he died.

And that was fine. But what drew his eye almost immediately was the telltale furs entrapping the senshi's uniform - grey and tiger-striped, and telltale even if he hadn't recognized the girl who wore the three stripes beneath her eye. He identified her from her part in the convention, where she encountered Xenotime in a rather impressive standoff. But she had already sustained some damage at the time, and she now stood proud and untouched to face off against this captain.

He knew these odds were slanted. The match lay in her favor.

He knew he could potentially offset those odds. He could assume the visage of Bischofite once more and match her in that power.

But even as he considered it, an algid despair peeled its icy veins from the pit of his stomach outward, like tendrils seeking the unknown for hidden morsels. It sought his drive, his dedication, his interest in the scene, and he had to forsake the concept of powering up to protect what hadn't yet been frozen.

Alois ducked into the shadows at the mouth of the alley, sharp gaze still focused on the Tiger Senshi that taunted the officer opposite her. And as he watched them exchange insults, he searched his pockets for a recent purchase - an already somewhat crumpled pack of cigarettes that still retained its cellophane. He knew that peeling away its casing and lighting up might draw attention to himself, but they had more important adversaries to worry about. Why waste time on an idle civilian who sought to watch the show?

With the casing discarded and a miraculously intact cigarette in hand, Alois used a newly obtained lighter to chase away that untouched perfection and facilitate the draw of smoke into his system.

And it met his lungs with scathing heat, with memories long abandoned and vivacious resignation. He shuddered and coughed, but it felt good.

He could watch the show and enjoy his cigarette too. What more could he ask on such a dismal occasion? In fact, he was beginning to think that forsaking his powered identity was an excellent choice that he should've made sooner.

Tsui wore a lopsided grin, likely to show off the tooth that the Corrupt Senshi Euclase had knocked clean out of her mouth in an encounter, before standing at the ready. The way that Schörl addressed Tsui made it appear that there were no harsh feelings over the matter, but Tsui wasn't so naive to trust anything that a Negaverse officer said at face value. Whether she held any lingering anger against her or not didn't matter- the fight was inevitable anyways, at this point.

"Well, good luck on either. I have no intention of just hollering to be let go, though, since you're so keen on these rhymes," Tsui said, not sure what to make of Schörl's keen ability to recite poetry at the drop of the hat. Maybe she was trying to impress her and maybe if Tsui was more of the snooty intellectual, she might have appreciated it. Unfortunately, Tsui's love of the arts could be narrowed down to having a casual habit of doodling, but it also indicated that the one she was going to fight was likely out of her league when it came to wits. Not a good prospect for someone that bullheaded as Tsui, but she'd welcome the challenge...

The Tiger Senshi shook her head, unaware of their visitor, though it might have changed her approach on the matter if she knew of Alois' presence. "I've run from too many fights already to say I like it, so don't worry. I'll stick around for this one... and I won't hold anything back either!"

No rivers to push this one off of, no immediate danger in the area for civilians or family members, more time to enjoy the fight. Tsui charged at Schörl, going for the first strike as she had a want to do.

When Tsui showed her teeth, and the missing part therein, Schörl couldn't help but don her own appreciative smirk. The comparison of Blake to the children's counting rhyme just made her mouth curl wider. The girl was trying to keep up with the banter, and that was something that made the dance worth more attention.

Then there was the quiet, but distinct, rapid grind of a wheeled flint and click of butane- a lighter? They had an audience? The captain didn't turn her gaze from the tiger, but her attention was halved- she'd had more than enough of two front battles for a little bit at the Convention. There was someone in the alley, and the scent of cigarette was clear to her smoker's nose. The question was were they friend or foe? There was the probability of neither, just some curious citizen or activist or paparazzi trying to get in on the media interest in the terrorists. But showman as Schörl could be, she wasn't interested in a purely ignorant awareness of a third party.

Tsui couldn't have been more obliging- it was easier to defend than attack for tai chi, even with the training bits with Xenotime more recently. The tiger was still fast, but ranking up meant it was less incomprehensible to follow the motions. Schörl turned, not fast enough to avoid all contact, but enough that the Eternal's charging strike grazed rather than bowled into her. It let momentum carry the scout a little past her, more like a bull fight than a tiger, and Schörl tried to offer a jab of her own so that they would match sore shoulder to sore shoulder.

The new positioning, facing sideways, served her purposes of letting her try to get a look down the dark alley for the source of the cigarette and lighter while keeping Tsui in front of her to keep track of as well. "What have we here...?"

Alois took another drag, and exhaled through his nose with old memories. He closed his eyes temporarily - he wanted to enjoy the dwindling smolder in his chest while the two exchanged banter at a mild rate. One failed to grasp the concept of acerbic wit, while the other maintained such an overwhelming lead in the act that Alois was left questioning whether the battle would be won on semantics alone. It felt illuminating, invigorating even, to settle into the sounds of battle while he enjoyed a well-missed cigarette.

He wasn't far now from the roots of his old life, when he first moved here from the border of Germany. From Bexbach to Destiny City, which sported no Rhine river, and no Schwarzwald for him to explore in wonder and introspection. But it didn't matter now - he was no different than he was some months ago, when Alois had no Bischofite to wear on nights like these. He stood outside the pulse of the city again, and the atrial and ventricular systoles clashed not twenty feet away. But as he opened his eyes to take in the sights once more, to watch in wonder as their first assaults on one another peeled away in a fraction of a second, he couldn't help but smile softly.

They held such power, and it became natural to them in a matter of days. But that smile quickly dwindled when his unwitting ally had spotted him in the shadows of the alley.

He made no move to acknowledge her - rather, he watched her from his vantage in the mouth of the alley. He should've figured that the muted orange glow on the edge of his cigarette would've given him away, as she most certainly could've spotted him based on those minor movements alone. But... Then came the smell of the smoke, unfurling toward the night breeze with indifference. It stole away his cover, and faded into the air.

She felt him, recognized him, but did it mean anything to her? No - it wouldn't. He was just a passerby at this stage, just a gawking pedestrian watching a war he never really understood. And he might have the ability to speculate on it, to attach abstract roles to the two while they fought, and find a reason to define the grueling pieces of his life through their battle. And he might walk away with an epiphany, with the temporary resolve to stop treading water and find a job that didn't wear away his humanity or a girlfriend that didn't love him for his money or any manner of s**t that plagued the common man these days.

They were their own marvel, and he didn't need to superimpose familiar ideals to understand that. He could watch their inhumanly quick tactics from afar and enjoy them for their face value, because the impossibility of it didn't bother him anymore. He could match the tiger in her speed, but she didn't know that. He could command the blonde with the whip, but she didn't know that.

And it felt good to rest in the shadows for once, where failure never reached him.

Because -- he couldn't fail to wait.
Because -- waiting didn't change anything.
Because -- with waiting came action.

He took another drag, and waved toward the gawking officer with a stoic expression safely in place. She might see his movements, but she wouldn't find a friend in him just yet. If she survived this, maybe, but...

She lost her focus. He caused her to lose it. Now the Tiger Senshi had the upper hand, as if she didn't already, and the officer would likely fight a losing battle. But he was a spectator here, not a participant - he needn't retreat to the folds of the alleys to assume a more powerful visage because it wouldn't change anything. If the blonde was fated to die here, no amount of intervention might change that. If she would succeed in driving off the Tiger Senshi, she could do so without his help. And he sighed, another quiet smokey sigh, and leaned against the brick and mortar that crumbled slightly beneath the pressure of his back.

He could wash his hands of this war and just watch from the shadows. Bischofite didn't matter to them, didn't impact them, didn't shock or inspire them. The only thing that mattered was each other, and that's where the passion flowed.

And that's what he looked for - not some misguided notion that he could make a difference in their lives.

The Tiger senshi wasn't certain if Schörl was the type to be impressed by such a display of scars and old battle wounds, but it always made her feel good to know that they were seen to others. Others might have been disgusted or horrified by such things, but Tsui saw it as a testament to her will to survive, and a warning that she wasn't afraid to throw a few more scars or blemishes on her body to get the job done. She wanted Schörl, and everyone, to know that when she doned her attire, she meant business.

Tsui had not heard the flick of the lighter being lit, nor did she really smell the cigarette smoke that hit the air nearby. If she did, she may have been much more curious, but her attention was purely on the fight. And with good reason. She remembered their last encounter, before she ended up pushing the (at the time) lieutenant into the river, and she recalled this one being extremely quick and articulate when it came to combat. Had she been an ally, Tsui could have definitely sought out lessons with her and would have loved to have her as a sparring buddy. Unfortunately, be at is may, this made her a very dangerous opponent, and while Tsui should have been happy to manage a blow in on someone that had easily dodged and countered her the last time they met, she was disappointed in herself for only grazing the shoulder, as well as allowing Schörl to strike back.

The blow connected with her shoulder, and never the type to hide behind a good poker face, Tsui grit back against the pain and didn't bother hiding it. Instead, she tried to bear it, fuel her determination, and she sought to return the favor, balling her fist and trying to a right hook to the captain's midsection to force her back. Her statement didn't stop her from striking, but it certainly did cause Tsui to raise a brow in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

Only then did she smell something distinct, and the realization that there might have been an onlooker immediately came to mind. She didn't feel chaos or order aura around her besides themselves, which meant that there was a civilian nearby, and that forced a curse from Tsui's mouth. "s**t."

I guess we can't all be eloquent. Tsui hadn't even noticed the bystander before? It lessened the chances of it turning out to be a senshi ambush. Schörl laughed at herself in her own mind- And what reason would they even have for that? You've been on a couple of operations now, but you certainly haven't made any sort of lasting marks on their collective psyche to make you worth hunting. Well....I guess there was that one time with Pinky McLacebritches. But that is barely worth a song.

Marking a tiger that wore its wounds so proudly would be more worthwhile even in a failure. And if they do not join the dance, they may watch as they like. Will you won't you will you won't you?

The problem, as she'd suspected, with a stronger opponent remained the same. Fraction the distance between them and the response time was proportional. At melee distance, as in a punch, it was more troublesome than it had been with the lunge. Approaches were always well telegraphed, much like how kicks were. The punch cracked into her side quite successfully, tossing her back a handful paces and shearing air out of her lower lungs.

But I can still use this much to my advantage. Well, she said herself she doesn't holler. Catch a tiger by the toe. The captain brought around her knout to bear, bringing the thongs low for the senshi's legs. "Thanks for the breathing room."

It made wheeling the knout with more force and velocity much easier.

So he couldn't maintain his anonymity forever. No matter. The battle's course would not alter from his presence alone.

The sea breached the shore, with or without ships.

And as he drifted, powerless and defeated, those waves delivered him inevitably. And he would not need a lighthouse to see the sharks; they eyed him from the depths, with eyes so black and cold that he found nary a scrap of depth within them. Alois smiled; captain in his own slow demise, he took solace in knowing what came next. With every fight came a conclusion - it was an inevitability, just as the rocks would inevitably give way to the pounding, stormy sea. The grayed waters would suck it away with such force, such absolute power, and the remains would stand broken and jutting against a fate long foretold.

"Haie, seh ich gut aus*?" He spoke softly. Smiled. A flash of teeth illuminated by the soft glow of a cigarette. The street lamps didn't reach the darkness here. No - from this vantage point, he could watch without wariness of the churning waters. For the sea would deliver him, but that was not its sole intent. To taste the shore meant to taste blood, so their ventures lay elsewhere.

Between each other, not him.

Alois watched flashes of movement where Bischofite might've seen a series of missteps. He heard quick exchanges, slight blows to the ego managed where applicable, though he knew not why they would waste their breath on such trifles - not in the midst of a dead heat. But he would not speak of these things, for he did not belong in the fray. The tiger would most surely recognize him, and with that sudden knowledge came likely biting remarks about his failures in the convention. A desperate act like that allowed for a slim margin of success - and he did not meet those margins.

If he did, the city would be flooded in youma by now. Chaos would reign supreme, where organized retaliation would be met with travesty. It wouldn't differ too greatly from this country's early history, and a war fought and lost years ago - long taught and easily predictable tactical movements crumbled before guerilla strategy.

Perhaps the two were a reflection of that - the blonde managed her part well, but she was likely outmatched. He could not easily peg her as a captain or general, but slower movements confirmed what he already suspected. And the tiger... winged accoutrements already confirmed her place at the top of the senshi ladder. He'd sensed it himself some time ago. She stood fast and deadly in the midst of this war, fueled by her failures as well as her successes. He wondered; did the blonde have that same drive to match her? Or would she fold beneath the pressure of fighting a greater opponent?

The onlooker took a quick drag and exhaled through his nose. He watched the two with muted interest, almost too tired to focus on the show. Who would stay and who would go? He wanted to know, if only to sate his morbid interest. So Alois sat against the brick building, wincing slightly when it dug into his back through the thin shirt he wore, and readjusted with legs loosely crossed over one another. He had little intention of leaving, no matter their protests.

"Thanks for the what now-?" Tsui wasn't the type to ever plan out her attacks and for that she paid the price. After she punched the captain, she hadn't thought ahead to think of how troublesome that would have been for her, considering Tsui's short arms and legs made her prime for close combat but not so much mid to long range. In that department, Schörl certainly had her beat, and she could not hold back the pained gasp when that weapon slammed against the side of her leg, tearing into the skin and leaving its bloody mark before she had the chance to pull away. Blood splattered on the pavement, but Tsui remained standing, her stance wobbly but standing nonetheless. "Hgh… fitting you try to take a tiger out with a whip…"

Even she had to admit that it was rather fitting, but there was little time to dwell on the humor of the situation. Not when there was possibly a civilian in the area. The Tiger senshi wasn't one for paranoid ramblings, but she could not help but worry for the civilian's safety, as well as their possibly identity. Was it one of her own, refusing to power up out of fear of Schörl? Or was it a Negaverse officer in disguise, merely waiting for the perfect opportunity to jump in and force her to defend herself? Such truths were beyond her, and the Negaverse captain she currently fought gave her little time to think on it, forcing her attention back to what Tsui knew to be the obvious threat.

"I'll tear that thing to pieces before the night's through!" Tsui growled, seeking to close the distance between them again, unable to run into a full sprint thanks to the burning gasp on her thigh but limping as fast as she possibly could. She had to take care of this captain first, before she tried to harm the fool that insisted on watching them. An forward approach was predictable, but Tsui was hoping to get a good jump into the air to avoid that incoming strike… a risky move, but it wasn't her style to do things otherwise.

"Tame, pretty, not take out, " Schörl was already getting the weapon around again as the Tiger was 'rushing' in. Threatening....my ...knout? Well....its original, I'll giver her that.

The loss of the full sprint was glorious on the white tiger. It made it just that little bit more reasonable and telegraphed for the Captain to prepare. The jump did take Tsui out of range for the initial follow-up strike, so Schörl kept with the momentum to crack the knout for the sound effect and to waltz step to take the place Tsui had been, reversing them on the battle field from their orientations seconds before.

Battles were as much about Morale as anything else and sound had its place in that. Tsui had avoided this one, but she'd felt the first. Hearing the weapon sing would play on it, for good or ill. Schörl was interested in seeing if this tiger took it as a boost to hear it and not feel it, or remembered the kiss of it and felt the dread of its next sounding.

"I could say that about your fuku, luv."

"Kill her already," he mumbled into the darkness. It looked like the blonde spent more time on showmanship than actual blows, which had its place, but he wasn't here to watch a wrestling match. He knew he was one to partake in those very tactics, but he buried darker intentions behind them. So was this captain of similar mind? It seemed more an exchange of trifles more than an attempt to scathe her opponent physically and mentally.

But who was he to judge?

Alois tapped out the ash accumulating on the edge of his cigarette and looked on. The white tiger retained a kind of perseverance that he hadn't seen in other senshi yet. She could take hits, and continue to take them for a lengthy period of time, which meant she was a powerhouse in her own right. But... as with her inability to keep up with the captain in terms of wit, she wasn't terribly smart. And such a weakness rendered her perseverance useless - for what good is it to take a thousand hits when one has been taken out of the battle entirely?

Stubborn as she was, she'd be easy to trap. So why hadn't the captain used her environment to construct such a means? Maybe it just wasn't in her interests - the captain possessed a battle prowess that he did not, and she likely wanted to rely on that rather than the crutch of traps.

Well - it was time to shake things up a bit. Alois ground his cigarette into the nearby building, both leaving his own small mark and allowing it to roll across the ground uselessly. He folded his arms behind his back, against his pinstriped black jacket, and approached the scene with a brand of calmness he was certain would identify him as a powered individual of some sort. In his own brand of mockery, he looked both ways before crossing the street toward the two. "Hold ze fighting for a second - I'm sure neizer one of you wants to smear me across ze ground and disappoint your factions. You're bos' good, and zat's well and nice, but you're not getting anywhere wis' zis... I don't even know what to call it. Playfighting?"

Alois cocked his head toward Schörl while still remaining a respectable distance away. He gestured toward her as if offering the cigarette between his fingers that he no longer had. "Hey, Negaverse officer. Captain, maybe? General? Obviously I can't tell, so forgif' me if I ******** up your rank. Last I heard, you haf' a quota to fill, and beating around zis fluffy cat doesn't contribute to it."

"Eternal senshi," he began as he about-faced toward Tsui with the same disjointed, animated demeanor that did nothing to impart a scrap of emotion to him. After snapping his fingers, he pointed toward the wings framing the small of her back. "You're eizer equal to zis officer or abof'e her in power. You must know how to pick your battles, or run into zem headlong, from ze sound of it. From what I remember, you want to protect everyone. So," he paused and retreated a step, while gesturing toward the blonde captain once more. "Protect me.

"Captain, general, whatever you are - drain my energy. Pull my starseed. Doesn't matter which. But you two need somesing to fight over, aside from egos."

Tsui couldn't deny the fact that the sound of the whip cracking did make her wince, even when she tried to hide it behind a low growl, and she may have allowed too much of her frustration be seen when her strike missed. She managed to come to a skidding halt, spraying droplets of blood on her clothing and the ground and immediately regretting that decision as it sent a searing pain throughout her leg. The insult to her fuku went unnoticed, however, when the civilian stepped out of his hiding place, and Tsui couldn't stop herself from cursing aloud. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

Even with his thick accent, she could tell that he was outright mocking them, and without taking her eyes off of Schörl, she looked over the civilian and had to hold in the urge to sneer when the smell of cigarettes hit her nose. Playfighting? Given the blood that trickled down her leg, he thought they were play fighting? And the nerve of calling him a fluffy kitty really dug under her skin. Before he had the chance to correct him, he drew his words directly to her, and she swore she could feel steam rising from just how red hot her anger was becoming. His request was enough to quell that anger, but only replaced it with some slight confusion, and she cast a glance to Schörl, as though to dare her to even try.

"Lay a hand on him, and I'll do more than snap your weapon," Tsui warned her, certain that she was falling into some kind of ploy here, but so long as there was a civilian in danger, as foolhardy and insulting as this one may have been, Tsui had to protect him. Even from himself. Schörl was far more composed than she was, she had to admit, which made her unpredictable to Tsui, and she wondered what the Negaverse captain would do with such an invitation.

Playfighting? Schörl snorted at first. This one was certainly bold as fortune's bosom. But then he kept talking, using a very, very interesting set of vocabulary. Her overall expression didn't change from self-satisfied amuse, buut her eyes did- like a hunting predator her pupils had widened to let in every detail in the dim light. Such was her focus and interest.

'Quota to fill'? ...And what little bird ever said that to anyone not one of our own. The senshi, last I knew, had no understanding that there were specific amounts meted out by each member and rank.
