Perhaps now that Sherry knew what he was trying to do, she wouldn't try to hold back. He had been silly, assuming it would only make her go easy on him out of concern, but since she knew that this was the only way to bring back Chester, surely she would give it her all?
He readied the daggers.
"Promise me you won't hold back, no matter what."

One summoned Armagnac in her hand, Sherry stood ready. "I can promise that. No holding back." At least to a point. No infirmary if it could be helped and all. "Just have to keep each other informed on shield strength, ok?"
She grinned. "What do you want to wager today?"

Jake gave a startled look.
"W-wager?"
Way to ruin his concentration, Sherry.
"We can discuss that later..."
It was a one-sided fight anyways, but he didn't think she'd want something in return. Unless it was another backrub...

Armagnac heartily disagreed with that statement.
Sherry gave Jake a pleasant look. "We don't have to, though. I'd probably just ask for a kiss anyway." Sometimes her own honesty startled her. the attack that followed her words was meant to both start the fight, and cover up her blushing.

Perhaps he did, but he still thought Sherry was looking at it much too optimistically. Not only was he stuck with runics, he couldn't even use FEAR attacks. Not that... Sherry had to rely on those to beat him. But the prospect of a kiss sounded nice.
... wait, he was the one who had to give it? Uh...
He raised the daggers, as a means to defend himself, but also to cover his face because even after everything he was still embarrassed about public displays of affection.

Sherry would have argued that public didn't necessarily have to come into play in her wagers. But that was for another time, another place.
Not for when one is waving a large weapon in the direction of their boyfriend. Unless of course that's what the fight was about. But this wasn't a fight about anything. It was training meant to help the both of them.

Had he not been so frazzled about trying to resummon Chester and the prospect of make-out sessions, he would have realized this, but alas.
As Sherry swung again, the daggers were raised once more.

At least he was defending this time. Focusing, it looked like. Good.
Of course, it wouldn't do to tire herself out trying to get past those defenses. Or maybe it would. Who knew? As it was, she stepped back to give him a tiny little jab.

Maybe just defending wasn't going to get him anywhere. The only thing he would establish was that the dagger shields work. No, if he was going to make any progress, he had to try attacking, but not like this.
He moved one of his hands, brushing against the keys. The lock was still there. Was that why he wasn't able to summon Chester?
... No, he couldn't keep thinking that. He was capable, he could do this.
He took the daggers and swung at Sherry.
"Remember, don't go easy on me, no matter what."

"I don't intend to, don't worry." She really didn't. He needed her help in this, and training was always good for both of them. One could never have enough training. The moment you stopped improving you were dead.
She put some force behind her next swing and followed it with a smile.

It was questionable how much training he needed, since if after all this he was still unable to summon his weapon, then all of this was for naught. No amount of training would save him if he was stuck with runics for the rest of his life. His very short life, that was, as if he wasn't done in by horsemen or missions, then Caelius would surely have his head for going beyond his 2-week period, showing absolutely no results. Dammit, DAMMIT.
He hesitated, swallowing nervously as the daggers were raised again, fending off a blow.

Sherry was not keen on the idea of Jake dying, especially not soon. Which was why they were doing this. Right? Of course.
And it was why she did what she could to not hold back. Which was surprisingly easy when your target was set a bit more on defense.
Which was fine. Defense was important, too.

Thoughts of failure clouded his mind, and he hesitated, the daggers raised as a guard, acting as a shield not just physically, but mentally. Would it be easier to just accept that he wouldn't be able to summon Chester? Wouldn't that be easier than to try so hard, and fail in the end? Maybe it'd just be easier to have Caelius end his life right there and then, and put him out of his misery.

It was likely a good thing Jake wasn't voicing his thoughts. Sherry would have had some choice words for him.
As it was, she was doing her best to help him. She was doing what he asked. Attacking, not holding back. She didn't know if it was helping, but she hoped it was.

... no, that wouldn't be fair, not to Chester, and not to Sherry, who was doing her best to help him. How could he repay them by giving up? No, he would fight until the bitter end. If even then he failed, then that was that. At least he would have given it his all.
Glad to see that Sherry wasn't relenting, he decided to put some force into it also, taking a step forward, swinging the dagger at her.
