As always Ismene had her head in a book. She was sitting in he back of her father's book store and library while she should've been in the front in case people came in. She had found a rather interesting book describing one of the first wars between her race and the Oblivionite's and she hadn't been able to put it down. She wasn't sure how accurate the book really was, but it still had battle plans that she could learn and than possibly use later on.
Swinging her legs and humming to herself ever so slightly while she sat on the chair, Ismene was completely oblivious to the world around her, surrounded by battle plans that she had never seen before, which was a rare find for her. She had read many books in her father's story, and it was a rare and fortunate day when she found a book that she hadn't read.

Avani held her father's hand as they walked through town. They were going to the bookstore today. Papa wanted to see what books they had on Leklans and Sherons. Avani had heard Mama and Papa talking about perhaps raising one or the other on the farm in addition to those they owned already for basic needs. Avani was wondering if they had any books on growing things. They had a lot at home, but she had read them all already. As they walked through the door, the bell that hung in the corner rang. Avani loved hearing the shop door's bells ring. She then breathed deep, the smell of books. She loved books, especially ones on farming.

Lost in the book as she was, it was surprising that Ismene even heard the ring of the bells that signaled that someone had walked in. Looking around for her father Ismene remembered that he had left her in charge and closed her book with a sigh, placing a piece of paper to mark where she had stopped reading as she did so. Jumping down from the chair that she was sitting on Ismene rushed to the front of the store to greet whoever it was that happened to come in. Although she normally didn't like talking, people who came into book store and library wanted to learn so that made them the kind of people that Ismene didn't mind talking to.
When Avani and her father came in to Ismene's view she smiled. She had never seen the pair of them before, and it always made her happy to see people her age that liked to learn. "Hello! Are you interested in browsing books, buying books, or do you just want to look around? Any particular kind of book you're looking for?" she asked clasping her hands together with a bright smile. She prided herself with knowing where just about every book in the store was. If she didn't know exactly where the book was she would at least know where it would be found. Privately she wondered if the father had brought his daughter here, or was it the other way around?

"Well arn't you a cute little one!" Papa said to the girl behind the counter, "Bet you know every book in here!" he winked. "I was wondering if you had any books on Leklans and Sherons, or related articles. My wife and I might begin to raise them." He looked down at Avani, "You get one book Avani girl. You were mighty good when we had to unpack the house."Avani was surprised at this. Books were a rare commodity for farmers, and every one she had she had ether saved or traded for. She smiled brightly up at her Papa and said, "Thanks Papa!"She turned to the counter and smiled brightly at the girl who was helping them. "I'd be mighty happy if you could show me some books on farming.... or farming equipment!"Avani's mind turned about the prospect of perhaps obtain a book on the newest farming techniques and equipment she could find here. Secretly, her ambition was to help Papa and the farm. She wanted to take over for Papa one day.... hopefully....

Ismene beamed at the older man. Although she didn't like being called little, she wasn't that young anymore, she did like being called cute and she felt as if he was acknowledging her skill. Yes she liked him. When he asked her about Leklans and Sherons she nodded happily. "Yes sire we do! There are two books on Leklans, and a few on Sherons on the shelf all the way to the back on the left." she said pointing towards where she knew he would find the books.
Turning her attention towards the girl she wasn't surprised about what she was asking for. She had the look of a farmer, like her father, and it was just something about the way she spoke. None the less Ismene liked her, even though farming wasn't something that Ismene herself would read about she did think it was cool that the girl wanted to read a book at all. So many people she met at her that were her age didn't care to read and learn. It was sad really.
"Sure! They are in the same section, and we have a lot of different books about farming." she said as she moved from behind the counter and beckoned for Avani to follow her. The farming books weren't far from the books that Avani's father had asked for but Ismene thought it was best that she helped the girl personally. "My name is Ismene by the way." she offered with a smile.

Avani smiled at the new person. "My name is Avani!" she said. Avani loved meeting new friends. She smiled at the new girl, "Nice to meet you!"She followed Ismene to the section on books she was looking for and looked up in appreciation, "A good selection! Glad to see there are a lot of books in here!" Avani had spent a lot of time dodging her friends in their last hometown to get into the bookstore to read the books the owner had. She ran her finger over the spines of the books, names of ones she knew of, a few she wanted, some she had yet to read. "So many to choose just one from!"Avani turned sheepishly to Ismene, "Do you think I might come in to read some of the time...?" Her family didn't have a lot of money to spare, but she could read the books, then decided which ones she wanted. The ones she wanted would help her to her ultimate goal.

Ismene repeated Avani's name in her head three times before smiling back at the girl. "Always nice to meet someone who wants to learn." she replied.
When Avani commented on how many books they had Ismene beamed. She was proud of her father's shop, and even prouder when people complimented it. "A lot of people farm around here, so my dad makes sure to have all kinds of books for them." she replied. And it was true, although it wasn't the path that Ismene herself wanted to follow she did know a lot of people who were farmers. The more she thought about it the more she realized that she didn't know much about farming... Maybe she should pick up a book on it some time soon...
Avani took her out of her thought by asking if she could come and read sometimes. Ismene beamed brightly. This was perfect! She would have someone, besides Fluff who never talked back, to talk to! Plus Avani was a farmer, so she could help Ismene learn about farming more than any book ever could. Well, not more that any book but it would be good hands on information. "Sure! I'm always down here reading, and if my dad is in the store we could even take the books upstairs to my room and read them so no one bothers us!" Ismene was getting excited, this was too good to be true.

"Can't always learn what to do by just doin it." Avani said smiling at Ismene, "Got to have some basic knowledge on how to start." "I'm glad ya all have a lot of farm books. I have a lot I would like to do for Papa..." She looked back to the books and smiled at all the knowledge there. It was just not farming she was looking for. She wanted to do something to help her Mama and Papa. It was something she had wanted for a long time now. Avani blushed and looked down at the floor and said, "That would be nice to come here to read. Not all my friends back in my hometown liked reading books." she then looked back at Ismene, "Thank you for letting me come here to read." she smiled shyly. Avani then turned her head questioningly to Ismene. "What is it you like to read?"

Ismene nodded. When learning something one had to read and learn from books, but also go out and practice it. The two went hand in hand. Just like although Ismene knew a lot about battling and fighting from the books that she read she was pretty sure that in the outside world she would be near useless when it came to actually fighting.
When Avani said she wanted to do stuff for her father it made Ismene like the girl even more. Ismene's father was her favorite person in the whole wide world and it was interesting to find someone who also wanted to help her father. "I understand, I work here to help my dad. And one day I plan on taking it over, after I write a few books of my own of course." she said with a bright smile. She wasn't sure what she wanted to write books on exactly, but she did want to educate others on something. To make a difference in the world was her goal.
When Avani said her friends back in her hometown didn't like to read she frowned slightly. How uneducated. "Yea, I don't have many friends because most of the people I know that are our age don't really like to read or learn." and with that she shrugged. If you didn't like to learn you weren't very high on Ismene's list of people she wanted to meet. "So in a way I should be thanking you as well, for liking to read and learn."
When she asked Ismene what she liked to read Ismene wasn't sure what to answer exactly. She liked to read all sorts of things really. "I like to read just about anything I can get my hands on really," she laughed "but for the most part I read books on war and battle plans. My mother use to be a warrior, and although I don't want to ever fight I think it makes her happy to know that at least I like to read about war."

"I love helping my Papa." Avani said feeling the love for her parents, "I love helping Mama too, but I'm no good with making things yet." She wrinkled her nose. Mama made the best cakes and sweets... Oh how she wanted to make things one day too. Avani smiled brightly when she heard Ismene wanted to write a book. "I call first copy you sign!" she said happily. It would be great to write a book on something, she thought, the world needed knowledge to survive. "No problem!" Avani said smiling, "At least I have somewhere to read with a person who likes it as well." Avani nodded understanding why Ismene wanted to please her mother. "It is good to know you wish to make your Mama happy." she then sighed, "I try to make mine happy, but I don't think I can make it as a cook."

Another thing the two of them had in common! Both of them were more like their fathers than their mothers. Why hadn't she meet this girl forever ago? It seemed as if she would have someone to talk about these things to. Most people didn't understand how much it sucked to want to make one of your parents happy but not be able to because you couldn't do what they wanted you to do. From Avani's sigh she was pretty sure that the other girl felt the same way. "I know I couldn't make it as a battler. I don't ever want to kill anything. But it's okay, I know that bother our mothers love us and at least we can make our father's proud by following in their footsteps!" she said with a smile hoping to turn the conversation to a more cheerful one.
Ismene laughed. "Deal! The first books I write and sign I will personally deliver to your house!" she said happily. She didn't think she would be writing a book anytime soon, but she would one day and when she did she would be sure to keep her promise.
"So how long ago did you move here?" she asked cuirously. Avani said her friends back in her hometown, and her father did say something about unpacking so she assumed that it was recently.

"We just recently moved here. A few weeks ago." Avani said thinking about it. The reason why was vauge to Avani, but she knew it was mostly because her father wanted land of his own to pass on. She didn't mind, she was far away from the cousin that would tease her the most about her tinkering and reading. Avani smiled and said, "I have met only one other person, a girl who lives near me called Sueno."Avani liked Sueno. She seemed as energetic as she was, and that wasn't including farming!

Ismene nodded. It was just as she thought, Avani had only just moved. "Oh well now you have two friends!" she said excitedly. Ismene wondered about this girl Sueno, she wasn't sure that she knew her but maybe she just didn't know her name. It was possible. Ismene had lived here her whole life and if she kept talking to Avani and Avani liked her than she would be Ismene's first real friend.
"I'm sure that the longer you are hear the more friends you will make." Ismene reassured the girl. Avani looked nice, and she seemed friendly, she would make friends easily Ismene was sure.
"You know if you want to borrow a couple books to take come and exchange next time you come than you can do that." Ismene offered.

Avani smiled at Ismene. A new friend here! She couldn't wait to see what adventures she would have with Ismene! Avani's eyes widened when Ismene offered to let her barrow the books from the shop. "I'd have to ask Papa, but I'm sure that's fine with him!" The fact that she could take out the books that offered the best diagrams of some tinkering projects she wanted to try for free. She looked shyly at Ismene, "Would your Papa be alright with that? I wouldn't want you to get into trouble with him."She looked at the books on the shelves and tried to find one she could get today from Papa. She saw one she had wanted to get for a while and reached up and picked it off the shelf. "I think I will buy this one today." she said smiling at Ismene, "I can come back later to read one of the new ones."

Ismene nodded. She was sure that her father would be okay with her lending books to her new friend. After all she would just tell her father she would be responsible if anything happened to the books while Avani had them. Plus she was sure he would just be happy that she had made a friend in the first place!
"Yes I'm sure that my father won't mind." she told the other girl. Watching Avani, Ismene tried to remember what books she liked so maybe she could look at a few before she saw Avani next and they could compare notes!
"Sounds good to me! Let's go see if your father has made his decision." she said as she lead Avani over to where her father was.
