Tantalus was glad that Damocles had agreed to patrol together, given that he had been thinking very hard on asking his boyfriend to train him. He had avoided bringing the subject up, mostly because he didn't know how, but they had reached a quiet open space in the park and really, he was out of excuses to make to himself.
"Would you be willing to teach me to fight?" He asked, bluntly. "I feel that I'd do better if I at least knew some basic self-defense."

"I can do that." Damocles said, as he glanced at Tantalus. "...I might not be as good as my teacher but I can try?" Trying never hurt anyway. "Okay, stupid question but you know how to do a defensive stance right? Do you know why it's good to take that stance?"

"Stupid answer, no, not really," Tantalus admitted, "beyond the most basic of it, really." Totally and completely useless indeed. "Well, I'd imagine it gives you better leverage for blocking attacks?"

Damocles rolled his eyes and took a stance. "Like this. And make sure your hands are up to cover your face. You know this much atleast. I know you do." Damocles then straightened out. "It protects your center." He said as he drew a straight like down the center of his body. "You want to keep that protected."

Tantalus copied Damocles, and then huffed. "Alright, yes, but I'd never thought of it as a proper defensive stance, more as 'the sane thing to do when someone comes at you.'" He pointed out, nodding. "That makes sense."

"You wanna make sure your feet are shoulder width apart." Damocles said, nudging Tantalus' back foot back just a bit. "You've got the idea though and that's what counts." The blonde stood in front of Tantalus again. "This, is your lead hand." Damocles said tapping the outer most hand. "When you throw a punch with this hand it's called a jab. And you're going to throw it until your arm is fully extended and locked."

Tantalus shifted with Damocles's nudge, and then, carefully not aiming at his boyfriend, he performed a slow version of the punch described. "Well, that's easy enough," he said, suddenly feeling better about the whole process.

He moved his hand from the lead to the back. "Cross." He instructed. "And when you punch, always pull the arm back to you. Never leave it out. Next is an upper cut. All you do is come straight up under the jaw." Damocles said 'demonstrating the move. "Either hand is fine."

"So, extend, and pull back quickly?" Tantalus did as demonstrated with the cross, and then the uppercut. "Huh, this isn't so hard," he said. "Though I suppose generally speaking my opponents will be quite a bit larger than me, that's the only issue I can think of."

"But make sure you throw the punch all the way." Next Damocles pulled Tantalus' arm out to the side before bringing it forward in an arc. "Hook. So those times in movies where someone shouting 'Give him a left hook, now a right. Another' this is what they are talking about."
Then he set Tantalus' hands into position. "Did you wanna try those out or move on to blocking??

Tantalus practiced both hooks, as demonstrated, his eyes a little wide and excited. This was good, this was easy, he could definitely throw a punch. "Let's try blocks, yes," he said. He was going to try and absorb as much as he could, as quickly as he could.

"Blocking is simple. If someones going for the side of your head, all your going to do is just tuck your arm back." He said as he demonstrated. Now if someone were punching straight at you, you just take the opposite hand they use and push it out of the way. So if they jab, you use your back hand. Cross would be your front. At this point it throws them out of balance and they would have to punch over their other arm to get at you."

Tantalus nodded, following Damocles's directions for blocks just like he had for punches. "I see," he said slowly, "that makes sense. The idea is to make it as hard for them to attack you again as possible, yeah?"

"Right. Typically, where you're going to want to aim for is their core. Solar Plexus, Instep, Nose and Groin. The instep is kinda more for if they got you in a hold." Damocles then moved to stand beside Tantalus. "Wanna move on to the kicks?

Tantalus was nodding eagerly, excited about every part of this. "Yes, let's do kicks," because the more he knew, the more confident he'd feel.
