Alistair Holmes was a man of many talents. He could act, he had a reasonably keen eye, and he had a fair mind for writing a mystery.
What he did not have was any sort of musical talent. That was one thing he envied his boyfriend; Lance could draw a melody from the piano.
Ali was embarrassing himself by poking out "Chopsticks" on the keyboard in Lance's room, waiting for his boyfriend to get back upstairs.
This was kind of sad.

Lance was on his way back to his room when he heard the chopsticks. Blinking, he followed it and was thoroughly surprised to find it was Alistair. As far as he knew, Ali usually didn't do musical anything. Unless it involved the theater. He leaned against the wall, watching as his boyfriend poked the keys.
"Not bad." He chuckled when Ali finished.

Alistair was hoping very much so that he'd hear Lance coming so that he could stop playing and get away from the piano in time to avoid being caught, because if there was one person he didn't want to see him playing piano poorly, it was Lance. He ducked his head and flushed fiercely.
"Isn't this an ironic reversal." He said faintly.

Ironic indeed. "I'd say so... Though I don't know how you though I wouldn't hear the keyboard go off." He teased. Walking across the room, he sat down besides Alistair. "Sooo what brought that on??"

"I don't know, I thought I was quieter than I was," Ali acknowledged. He was very determinedly not looking at Lance as part of his overall avoiding-dying-of-embarrassment strategy.
"I, uh, I thought I'd...at least attempt to play the piano?" He admitted. "Musical talent is one thing I very definitely lack."

"Ah... I dunno. You played Chopsticks... So I'd say you have some talent." Lance plucked away at some keys. "Want me to teach you?"

Ali sighed. "I suppose. It's something I'd like to be able to do, I'm just not actually very good at it." He looked over. "I...yes. I would like that." He agreed.

"Alright. Basics. There are 88 keys on a piano. 52 white keys and 36 black keys. The white keys notes are A through G." Lance hit the corresponding notes. "Black ones are Sharps and Flats... Depending on what you need." Lance hit the G key. "The black key in front of it would be a sharp. The black key behind it would be a flat."
Lance blinked. "...Am I going to fast?"

Ali scooted over next to Lance, nodding along with the explanation given. "No, I think I understand." He said. "White keys are A through G, black keys are sharps and flats, gotcha. Sharps and flats are like...half-steps up or down between notes?"

"Mhmm. Sometime's song's call for a different sound. That's where they come in." Lance played through the scale hitting all the keys. "See how they sound different? Also. That is called a scale." He hit another key. "This is Middle C. Cause ya know. Its the middle of the keyboard. Kinda."

Ali nodded. "Right, scale, gotcha," he said, following Lance's with one of his own. "And you can...identify the notes around middle C?" He asked hopefully. It was identified, it had to be important!

"Mhmm... Anything about Middle C is going to get progressively higher." Lance reached over and dragged his fingers over some keys to prove his point. "Anything below Middle C will get lower. " He repeated the process again on the other side of the piano.

Ali nodded. "Oh!" Well, that made a lot of sense. He was eternally grateful for Lance's patience with him, and he really did want to learn at least the very basics of playing the piano. "And, ah, sheet music? I have to admit, it utterly baffles me."

"Uuuuh.... Hold that thought." Lance got up and walked over to a bag he had stashed in the corner of his room. Grabbing a handful of papers he went through them all. It was all piano music of course, but he was trying to find a specific one. "Ahaha... Here we go." Resuming his place next to Ali, Lance propped up the sheets. "Don't go bugging out about the notes. This is actually kinda tame compared to others I have." He said.

Ali stared, uncomprehendingly, at the music in front of him. "Sweetheart, all of it is a little intimidating to me." He said. Being unable to read music certainly didn't help with that. "Is there, uh, a sort of...key to knowing what's what?"
