Tick. Tick. Tick. The sound of the clock in the kitchen, tick-tocking away, was going to drive her insane. Arms wrapped around herself, she sat on the very edge of a kitchen chair, looking down at the cup of coffee, laced with cream and sugar, long since turned cold as she mused over the jumbled thoughts in her mind. Ears flicked back, twitching with each tick of the clock until she couldn’t take it anymore. Swallowing the last sips of the brew, she emptied the cup and put it in the dishwasher.

Their apartment was small, but cozy. The first real home they’d had since…well, since they left their past behind. For the longest time it was just the two of them—Bipolar and her twin brother, Panic—and it was nice. Familiar, and anyone who knew Bipolar knew she craved the familiar. Things tended to frighten her, tended to spook her and rattle her to the core, and when that happened…sometimes the results were dismal.

A flash of red, a splash of blood, the soft gurgle of—

No. She shook her head, sucked in a deep breath, focusing her gaze on the birds outside her window because if she closed her eyes, she would see him. Her resolve now shaky, the ticking of the clock drilling into her mind, she spun away from the kitchen sink just to get away. She needed out—the apartment was slowly suffocating her.

Grabbing her favorite coat off the back of the chair—plush baby blue with a faux-fur hood—she yanked her arms through the sleeves and shoved her feet into her boots. Writing a note for her brother, she left the apartment complex behind on foot despite the chill of winter’s air. It was crisp, cold against her lungs and she reveled in the chill, letting it soothe her frayed nerves. She was fine. Everything was fine. Okay. Great.

Her boots crunched over fallen autumn leaves as she found the park and with a squeeze in her heart, a longing for a simpler life, she sat down on the abandoned swing set, wrapping her fingers around the cold chain and pushing off with her feet, her hot-pink hair fluttering in the wind.

What she wouldn’t give for a normal life…

Aklys held onto her scythe with great caution, fingers tapping against the weapon before, with a gentle tap of her fingers, it vanished. Ah, the ability to make your weapons appear and disappear, something so over-looked by her family and yet so useful when all you wanted was to pass as "normal" in this world.

Normal. She knew that was a word not permitted upon her. Not when your entire life is built around the idea of peculiarity. Her world was something most would desire, minus the blood and chaos. It was magical, creative, and strange, and as a child she had loved her world. She had loved watching the weather change in seconds and the moon chase the sun within an hour. It was not predictable, and as a little girl that had been all she wanted. Now? She wanted the security that the normal world promised. She wanted to know when the sun would set. She wanted to not smell blood every few days. She wanted to avoid that violent world, but she knew better.

She belonged to that world.

Wonderland was a part of her. She knew this, and she accepted it. She tried to play the role she had been given, and the ticking clock in her chest reminded her consistently that she had a role, and she was lucky. She had a face. She had a purpose. She was supposed to be violent, yes, but she needed to appreciate what came along with the violence. Life. A home. Her family.

She knew this, but it didn't stop her from slipping into the "normal" world time to time for an escape. It didn't prevent her from hiding her weapon and slipping into a park, eagerly pulling herself up and over the worn down fence and landing within the wood chips. Back home, there'd be no such thing. Safety wasn't as important as it was here. It wasn't needed. Death was normal, and expected.

"I wish I came here as a kid." She murmured under her breath as her fingers tapped the wood chips, not noticing the bright-haired woman on the swings. Not yet. She was too fascinated with what could have been. Would she had grown up differently? Would she have been normal? Would she not have been awkward? Or would she still be the same?

What would this world have given her that Wonderland couldn't?

Bipolar pumped her legs, pushing the swing higher and higher, the chains rattling and squeaking, but she was also watching, ever-wary…and up high, she could see as the sun glinted off the steel of a blade, a certain scythe and her heart stilled in her chest, fear clogging her throat. Her own blade hung at her belt and she was unafraid of pain…but terrified of death. Terrified of the unknown. She slowed the swing, watching as a pretty pink-haired thing climbed the fence, seemingly awestruck by the playground.

The swing fell to a still, Bipolar’s toes of her boots skimming the ground. Her heart thudded hard, steady but fast. The girl hadn’t noticed her yet…was that good or bad? Her shoulders bunched--god, she was becoming paranoid. The girl didn’t even have a blade…and you couldn’t just HIDE a freaking scythe, but she did have an extremely long tail.

BP scented the air, but all she smelled was the brisk scent of winter’s approach, cold and crackling and promising snow. She let out a shaky breath, shaking her head fiercely enough that it might rattle the fear, the demons lodged into her mind like leeches that sucked away at her soul. She wasn’t a fool--a coward, sometimes yes, but not a fool…

Standing despite the patter of fear of the unknown--come on the girl isn’t scary! She mentally chided--she stepped forwards. Tail wrapped around her, hands fisted in the plush purple fur, she fought back the demons and offered a small smile to the pink-haired girl. “Hi there…” Her voice was soft with a lilt, an accent no one could place, and she tried to be pleasant versus paranoid. “Are you…have you never been to a park before?”

Aklys drug her shoes across the ground, head dipping closer into her jacket as strange eyes peered at the other woman. The soft voice was pleasant, despise that odd accent. She actually liked it, and it made sense that Aklys hadn't heard it before, due to not being a part of the Outside. Her head tilted, hands twitching across her lap before she turned her head, drawing her legs closer into herself as she stayed sitting upon the woodchips.

"No." She mused back, her breath causing wisps of cold to exit her mouth. 'Look tough.' Her brain echoed to her, causing her body to try and straighten and eyes to attempt to look at the other, however her nerves came into play and her head turned away once more. "I've been to an amusement park back home.... if that counts?" Mary Gowland's park was something she had witnessed as a small child, and hadn't gone back to since.
