The trees were still cloaked in their bright fall colors, though the forest floor was looking quite spectacular as well with the carpet of fallen leaves. On this comfortably cool day, Truffles couldn't help but explore. It was a new world for the season, and today the chill of winter had receded, making it perfect for kicking through the leaves. Usually so busy with watching out for her brother and trying to fix up the shack they lived in, Truffles didn't get much time to just be a child.
Today, that child came out fully, laughing as she kicked a smaller tree and the leaves fell around her like confetti; giggling as she jumped into a pile and startled some poor little caterpie that had been napping there. Here, she didn't have to worry about anything!

There was someone else near by who didn't have the same luxury of being a child. No she was instead gathering provisions to see her through the winter. Berries had been gathered, and seeds, and plants and anything she could get her hands and vines on to save and dry for the long winter ahead. She had a storage cellar in the center of her one room home that kept things relatively cold for the winter and kept them from going bad quickly.
At the moment she had vines wrapped around tree limbs and she was gathering acorns and such and dropping them into the basket she had hanging around her neck with some cloth she'd tied around her neck. It kept her hands free for picking. The next tree over had some wild apples that might still be good...
It was laughter that caught her attention and she watched the scene beneath her, at the girl walking through the area giggling and having fun. Demeter was done with this tree and lowered herself as far as she could, landing on a stick and leaves, a staccato of snaps filling the air suddenly and startling even herself.

Truffles almost felt bad for having so much fun by herself! ...almost. She let out another laugh as she startled the same caterpie from another leaf pile, and watched it streak on up a nearby tree. She gave chase, and jumped up to climb a couple branches before dropping back down, giggling as she rolled along the ground.
However, her entire demeanor changed at the sudden loud crackling, giving away someone else's presence. Gasping, she jumped to her feet and crouched down to all fours out of habit, tail fluffed and teeth bared in warning and ears perked forward. She quickly picked out the startled movement, and frowned when she saw the other girl. "What do you want?" she asked sharply, instantly on the defense. Girl or not, the other child was an unknown!

What was the girl doing? She was behaving strangely. Was she being affected by something she ate? Demeter watched her curiously for a bit even after she dropped. Why was she acting so peculiarly? Seeing the change in behavior though made her shift a little herself, eying the other girl. "Are...you...okay?" she spoke haltingly. She wasn't used to talking to things that could talk back!

Truffles stared down the other girl, not budging an inch as they watched each other. Slowly, as the other girl spoke, she realized she was crouching and stood up. "O' course I'm okay," she snorted, crossing her arms. No way had she been startled! Nuh-uh! "Why? Are- er-.. are you okay?" She looked over the stranger suspiciously. The girl seemed uninjured... "Where'd you come from, anyway?"

Demeter continued to stare at her oddly even as the other girl assured her she was alright. "I am...fine. Confused I think." she continued to look at Truffles as she pointed upwards. "There. I was gathering fruits from the trees." she motioned to the basket hanging on her neck. "Why were you behaving so strangely?"

Truffles raised a brow. "I'm strange? You're the one dropping out of trees!" Her lips suddenly twitched into a small smile. "You startled me when you dropped down. Can't expect a girl to not be ready to defend herself when someone surprises her like you did."

Demeter frowned a little at the other girl, still looking sort of confused. It was so weird seeing someone after so long she couldn't help but stare a little! "I'm sorry I...." one hand came up and dropped as she spoke, fumbling for the right words. What were the right words anyhow? Confusion filled her face as she dropped her gaze to the ground.

Now it was Truffles' turn to be confused, her fluffy tail twitching. Was she so intimidating? ...Well, of course she was! She pulled herself upright and puffed out her chest to look larger overall than she was. "Well, no harm done," she said casually, waving a hand dismissively. "You just gotta be more careful, 'cause others won't be so nice as me when you go and startle them like that."
Still, she thought about what the other girl had said. Gathering fruits... Cocking her head, she took a few steps closer and peeked up at the tree. "Those fruits... um... are there any more left up there that're good?" It wouldn't hurt to grab some to take home for dinner, or to dry for winter.

Demeter was semi oblivious to the fact the other girl was trying to be intimidating. "You startled me...carrying on like that. What were you doing?" her head tipped again curiously brows furrowed as she tried to make sense of what had been going on. She'd not had much of a child hood after all. The question of the food however made her smile and she nodded. "There are." the basket on her neck was pulled free, and she held it out. "You hungry?" why not offer? She was about done preparing for winter after all.

"I startled you?!" Carrying on? She didn't carry on! Clearing her throat bashfully, she kept her eyes on the tree. "I told you, you're the one that startled me. Can't be too careful out here, with the bad folk that wander around."
Speaking of... she finally took a moment to look the other girl over as the basket was held out to her. "I can get my own. I don't wanna take from you." She looked around the woods, then back to the girl. "Are you alone? Don't you have someone with you?" The girl didn't look like much of a fighter... Who did she have to watch out for her?

"You did yes....no one has ever come through here before so it surprised me...then you were doing whatever it was you were doing." she shifted her weight a bit, skirt clinging to her ankles. "Well...if you climb well there's plenty up there. If not, I can help. Want a basket? I have some empty ones you can use." she pointed to the two empties sitting beside the two full ones. There was a shake of her head at the question that had been asked of her. "No, there's no one with me. I'm all alone." she didn't seem particularly broken up by this fact, but then it had been quite awhile.

Truffles sighed heavily. This girl really didn't understand the concept of self defense? "I guess this is my first time in this area.." He looked over at the available baskets, her ears twitching. She debated quite a while before walking over to scoop one up. "Thanks," she said quietly, her gaze rising to the tree. The basket would be so much easier than her hat....
She looked over as her previous question was answered. Alone... "Well, you seem to be doing fine on your own," she observed with approval as she jumped for the first branch and pulled herself into the tree.

The sigh made Demeter wonder a moment but she didn't ask, instead. "Most don't come this deep into the forest so it's no surprise you've not been here before." Watching the other watch the tree she got closer, and there went her vines whipping out and pulling her up into the tree. "Catch! I'll get you some good ones!" She was obscured by the leaves as she climbed around, carefully dropping fruit down. "You learn to do well alone. I've been alone a very, very long time. Ever since my mama died."

Eyes widening as the other girl suddenly flew past her, Truffles finally smiled and giggled. So that's how the girl had gotten up there in the first place! That was a handy advantage to have. She reached out to catch the falling fruits, her basket filling quickly.
Her ears perked as the girl continued on about being alone. "I had to learn about living alone, too. I have my brother, but he's kinda hopeless." She giggled affectionately. She loved her brother, but he sure could be a pain to take care of at times! "We were left alone after we changed." She looked up at the girl, and hesitated a moment. The girl didn't seem too emotional about what had happened, but still... "Sorry ta hear about your mama." Believing that her owner hadn't loved her anymore, she felt she was surely better off now without the human. This girl's mother though... surely she hadn't wanted to die.
