Dusk. Or just before it. Sherry really should research the exact meaning on that word someday, since she liked it so much. But basically the sun was working on setting, perhaps a bit sooner than she would have liked considering their current plans.
Leaning over, Sherry gave Jake a small kiss on his cheek, for luck or whatever, before stepping back. "You ready?" Jake was given a glance and smile as she asked the question.
I know you are. Sherry summoned the weapon with a bit of a sigh. It was getting tiring- all the grumpiness.

Jake sighed, not sure if he would ever be ready, but he had to do this. For Chester's sake.

He paused.

Sherry planted her feet firmly on the ground. "Tell you what. I'll stand here and defend, you come at me." Defensive stance was a go. Later. Sherry was still working out the best way to deal with two close range weapons and make this a fairer fight. He wasn't up to par with those runics.

When Sherry took on a defensive position, Jake only stared.
What was she...
"Take the weapons but try not to use them. Try to envision your weapon if you do. Focus."
No, he could do this. He just had to concentrate.
"Here I come, then."

He seemed to be... not quite in it somehow. Hesitant? Even as she moved to counter his attack her brow furrowed in thought.
She didn't intend to actually hurt him, yet, it was a spar after all. Blunt end of her weapon was aimed at his shins.
"You can do better than that."

The daggers were barely raised to defend himself when Sherry attacked, the shield only absorbing some of the impact.
No, he shouldn't... rely on them. It was risky, but he had to take a chance.
What else did Mark say...
Talk to your weapon if it makes you feel better, they can sort of still hear you.

She'd been matched against Jake before, and she'd fought alongside him. He rarely held off on attacking. Heck, their last spar had been with the daggers and he'd given it a great show.
He'd seemed to be defending her first blow, and she'd fully expected an attack to follow. The swing of her blade was short, form the side, and centered close to her body, just so she'd be able to adjust quickly to any such attack. But he hadn't. He didn't even look like he was trying to defend this time.
"Jake?"

The swing from Sherry's blade caught him off guard, and he let out an audible "oof", staggering back. He knew it had been the daggers that had protected him, but for a second...
"I'm fine, don't stop attacking."

She watched him close after her swing. His head was certainly NOT in the game. But he did take up something of a defensive position.
"Alright," she said. "I can do that." Another swing, half-hearted perhaps, but something to test his stance. "Are we working on your defense?"

She probably didn't need to know she was mentally screaming at a weapon who probably couldn't or didn't hear him.

She was readying herself for another attack but stopped at his answer. The butt of her glaive hit the ground next to her feet and she looked at Jake. "You suppose?"
Fingers tightened around her weapon as Armagnac began crooning in Sherry's head. The weapon thought this was a wonderful set up for a fight. "You're not even defending. Jake... Are you trying to have me beat you into the ground?"

It was one thing to have Caelius lecture him, but now Sherry?
"No, I swear I'm taking this seriously!"

Ok, no, he could do this.
He just had to IMAGINE he was using his own weapon, instead of Caelius' personal runic daggers that he'd probably have to pay an arm and leg for just to touch them. He could do this.
Ok, Chester, I'm using you to attack, ok?
He stepped forward, swinging the daggers at Sherry, imagining that they were tonfas instead.
Sharp bladed tonfas and Chester was going to yell at him for not taking this spar seriously.

Seriously? They'd just started but she could tell this was not his usual version of serious. Heck, she knew him to give her crap about serious spars when she was TRYING.
“Are you?” Even as she asked he was attacking, a real attack, tough not as solid as it might have been. “Better,” she said, smacking at his waist with her staff. Something was off about him, she knew that much.

He was. He really was.
Whether or not he was doing a good job of it was debatable.
Either his imagination wasn't very strong, or the concept of thinking the weapon he was holding was his actual partner was ridiculous, but even after he struck, he felt nothing, heard nothing. Not even a whisper, or even the faint feeling that Chester was there.
Was it... too late? Had he really taken too long, and the connection was gone?
... no, it couldn't be. It wasn't too late. It CAN'T be too late.
He just... he just had to try harder.
No, he could do this!

She aimed for his shoulder this time, with the side of her blade. It wasn't her intention to hurt him, but she definitely wanted his attention. It didn't seem like his mind was on the battle. Not only were his attacks not connecting, but his words made little sense- heck the look on his face worried her. He was distracted by something. And while training and excising was great when one had to think, sparring was not. Accidents happened during spars.
"Jake, what's wrong?"
