With the reaper dorm clearly beaten in the school's house cup, Brenley had gone back to bettering himself rather than dwelling on how much his race sucked as a whole. Since he had failed to excel at running or jumping or, embarrassingly enough, taking a quiz, there was nothing to do but vow that he someday would. He was only in his first year here, after all, and he'd already done and seen more than he had ever thought possible.
Today, he was accompanied by his dromaiusaurus Screech, and together they were tackling the arduous task of documenting the flora of Amityville. All of it. The boil was currently skulking in the bushes outside the monster dorms, sketching the leaves and flowers he found there. Every so often, he would pick some berry or another and offer it to the minipet, watching closely as Screech swallowed it whole then trotted off again. So far, the creature had shown no ill effects, but it was only a matter of time.

One would hear Hel before one saw her. The reaper let out a loud peal of laughter as she was chased across the grounds by her familiar. She tackled the large bird when it had landed from stretching its wings, and now it was seeking revenge. The ghoul happened to be running along the wall of the Monster dorms, and as she was quick to dive around the corner and right into some bushes. It worked. The familiar let out a shrill cry as it zoomed by, and kept right on going. Hel cackled, shifting herself in the bushes, and then realized she wasn’t alone. She tilted her head all the way back and stared at the other being who she was sharing the bush with. She blinked and then stared. Even upside down, he seemed really familiar…see, one thing that Hel picked up on, even better than faces, were auras. The way others carried themselves…and this one was familiar! The reaper grinned, and then snapped her fingers excitedly. “Oh! Oh! OH!” Her grin widened. “I know you! From the Tear! We fought along side each other often in the mist, ya!?” Smerdle YAY THANK YOU *A* EEEEEEEE -rolls all over this like mad-

Brenley wasn't terribly good with auras, but he was fine with faces, and he had plenty of time to examine hers, even as Screech remained true to his name, letting out a terrified scream as he ran off. Bren didn't need the time to recall the valkyrie, so instead of spending it trying to remember who she was, he simply stared, eyes wide and fingers frozen above his notebook. Hale. Some small part of the boil was pleased she remembered him too, but most of him was quite surprised by her sudden appearance. He had caught sight of her once or twice from afar since they'd met in that dreary dimension—the Tear, she called it—but the last place he'd thought he would speak to her again was... here, in a bush.
He swallowed, stowing his notebook at his waist with brisk efficiency. "Yes, we did. I'm Brenley. Bren." Something seemed to click in his mind, now that he wasn't struck dumb, and he pressed his lips together for a second to keep himself from babbling. "Are you being chased?" He hadn't actually seen her pursuer, but the noise it had made was right out of a human world horror movie. "By a dinosaur?

Hel’s eyes went wide momentarily as something else scuttled out of the bushes and screamed. She was silent for a moment, blinked, and then laughed, loudly. “What was that!?” She cried, and sat up. The ghoul then spun around so that she was properly facing the boil, and sat on her knees, back to grinning. “Bren!” She echoed. “So good to put a real name to the being!” She held out a dark hand to him to shake. “I am Hel! Ha! I was…” She glanced through a gap in the bushes. “But I lost it, ha!” She looked back at the boil. “Ah, no, not a dinosaur! That was my chicken!” Such a good thing to call her familiar. She then leaned closer to the boil, still waiting for him to shake her hand. “So Bren…what are you doing in the bushes next to the Monster dorms?” Her grin widened. “ Are you peepin’?”

Chicken? Huh. He turned to try and see where this chicken had gone, but all that was beyond the bushes at the moment was open space and empty grass. Bren's attention shifted back to the ghoul, and he straightened slightly when he noticed she had moved closer. Shrugging off his mild discomfort, he offered Hel his hand as she questioned him, giving her what probably ranked as one of the top three wimpiest handshakes ever recorded.
"I was... no!" Uncomfortable again. "I wouldn't..." He shook his head once, trying to reclaim his hand, at least until he noticed her grin. "You're..." He let out a sigh. It was a joke. He could handle a joke.
"I was cataloging plants. And that," he pointed at where the minipet had been before it had fled, "...was Screech." Brenley smiled, faintly and briefly. "He was helping. I would ask you to help, but you seem rather, um, busy." Hiding from a chicken.
He swallowed again. "It was very nice to meet you properly. We fought well together." He would sooner forget how giddy he had felt every time he had seen her emerge from the mist or how he had hoped to find her safe once they had returned home. He hadn't been himself in that other world, at least not at first. He'd been carefree and stupid. He was not stupid.

One of the wimpiest hand shakes every recorded and noted. Hel looked a bit baffled at that, and unfortunately for Bren did not let go. “Aww, come on, Bren!” She cried. “Ya! We did fight well together, so I need a hand shake to match!” She squeezed his hand. “I am not letting go until you give me a better shake!” So while clutching his hand, she carried on the rest of the conversation. “Ya! I am just kidding you!” Bren definitely didn’t seem like the peepin’ creepin’ type. “Oh, Screech, fitting name!” The reaper blinked once the boil explained what he was doing. “Cataloging plants?” She echoed. “Ah, like…collecting them and pressing them or…I WANNA HELP!” She suddenly cried. "I am not busy at all! I lost the chicken, and he will go to his lady friend anyways!" She explained before she grinned again. “Ya! I am so glad to have found you again! It warms my heart to see that you are well!” She had made some bonds out there in the midst of that crazy battling…what she went through with those in the Tear was just something she couldn’t relate to with others who didn’t.

He tugged his hand back once more, only to find that it was still being held. How odd. Why would she need a stronger shake? He tried to be nonchalant about the whole holding-hands-with-a-ghoul-in-a-bush thing he was currently experiencing, but once she had stopped talking again, he quickly took the opportunity to squeeze his fingers tightly around her palm and give her hand two decisive shakes. He looked slightly embarrassed at the display, but it was what she wanted, right?
"Your enthusiasm is appreciated, but no one wants to catalog plants." Except him, but that much was obvious. "And it was more eating them than pressing them. Screech was doing the eating. I was taking notes on the effects of each."

"Good job!" Hel cheered, pleased now at his better hand shake. "Now just do that to everyone you meet for the first time! First impressions are really important!" Hel didn't really know how to make a proper first impression, but she could pretend she did. "Oh...but you are!" Hel informed, finally letting go of his hand and resting her hands on her knees. The reaper looked pretty into it...right up until he said something about effects. Hel looked like she swallowed a bug briefly...her mentor dealt with chemicals and things and Gramps also did stupid science stuff with plants...and effects were concerning. "That is pretty ah... daring, friend...what if you found a plant that turned you into a frog or made you laugh for an entire day!? Or, even worse, it made you tired!?" Somehow that was worse.

Brenley smirked faintly at her praise, briefly hiding the expression in his scarf as he lowered his head, at least until she voiced her concerns regarding his research. He supposed he could come to the same conclusions by reading about local plants in a book, but the thought was less than satisfying. He'd learned about the world through books all his life, and now that he was out in it, he wanted to experience what he could first hand, even if he was transformed into an amphibian or forced to... take a nap? What was so bad about that?
His shoulders rose in a slight shrug. "I would live with the consequences." He recalled the strange bread Ruth had consumed in the human world and how she'd spent the next ten minutes puking. "Though first I suppose I would hope the plants around here wouldn't do any of those things." This was a school, after all.
Oh, who was he kidding.
Reaching for his belt once more, Bren retrieved his notebook from where he had stowed it and held it out to Hel. "You can take notes if you're skittish." He almost smiled in earnest at the ridiculousness of that statement, but he managed to keep this show of amusement largely contained as well.Lucyal sorry my pony demanded i tag all of his old rps this weekend because he's a fairy princess idefk

Hel still looked a bit skeptical. Plants, okay. Crazy a** things. "Ah...it is not the plants I am worried about exactly...it is what the creeple around here do to the plants." She puffed out her cheeks briefly, and then looked like Bren had slapped her with his next words. What. How dare Bren question her manhood courage! The reaper leaned right into him, clenching her fists. "I am NOT skittish!" She cried, and then leaned back a bit to stare at the surrounding foliage. Oh, her pride was always going to get her in trouble. "Besides..." She muttered. "Me writing looks like someone had a seizure while sitting in a room that was shaking." She then huffed, and looked back at Bren. "Which one needs to be tested next!?" Smerdle LOL that is a-okay <333...I love it when unexpected things happen in RP, haha!

Hm. He supposed she had a point. Too bad he barely had a chance to think on the subject before she had moved within hitting range and gotten all bristly. Bren had been well aware he had been baiting her a little, but he hadn't expected her to leap to his challenge with such fervor. It was interesting. And frightening. What was even more interesting than her reaction, however, was the twinge of guilt he felt in response.
"Y... you don't have to," he said, dropping his gaze to his notebook and busying himself with turning to a clean page. A moment later, he looked at her again with most of his usual conviction. "But, if you insist, I'll do it too." Hopefully, they wouldn't ingest deadly poisons at the same time or anything. Bren quickly moved farther down the wall until he spotted several specimens he hadn't documented. He picked a spade-shaped leaf for her and a spiker one for himself.
"I suppose since you can actually speak, you might comment on the taste as well," he continued, peering down at the plant in his palm with apprehension.

"Oh, I have to now!" Hel replied, puffing out her chest. "Eh...? But are you not recording...?" Oh, whatever! Hel crawled down right after Bren, sticking close to the boil, and settled close to him once he stopped as well. Briefly, Hel was thinking along the same lines as the other reaper. What if she died eating one of these? Should she send a text to someone? But then Bren had some leaves in his hand, and it was go time. #Do Lots Of Stupid Things Because Why Not. Hel snatched the spade-shaped leaf from his hand and immediately shoved it into her mouth. She didn't really chew it, and instead just inhaled it...The reaper was quiet for a moment, seeming to think about what she just inhaled. "Tastes...very lightly of mint and--" She hiccuped, and then hiccuped again, and again. Hel groaned, and then hiccuped.

"I am perfectly capable of taking notes while I..." As she sucked down the leaf without warning, Bren unconsciously held his notebook a bit higher, as if to ward off any negative effect the plant might prove to have. He tried to cover his momentary hesitation by scrambling for his penstrictor and making a quick sketch of the plant as she started to hiccup.
"Hm. Um. Interesting." He glanced down at the leaf he was still holding, now thoroughly crushed in his minor panic. He dropped it hastily and bent to pluck a fresh one, but instead of eating it himself, the boil held it out to Hel, trying to look as innocent as possible as he did so. "Minty. Good to know." No. He didn't think he wanted to eat the plants anymore, thank you.

“Uh huh.” Also, Hel didn’t miss the way Bren handed her the leaf he was supposed to eat. She gave the boil a look that said I see what you did there. The look was ruined when she hiccupped, but she took the spike looking plant regardless. Oh well. “You are buying me lunch after this.” Hel declared, which was followed by another hiccup. “And I eat a lot.” She placed the new leaf into her mouth, and instead of swallowing the spike leaf, she sucked on it instead, and then made a disgusted face. “Oh this tastes foul! Like sour milk and—“ She paused. Her hiccups were gone, but now her mouth felt tingly and then it felt— Hel spit the leaf back out. “Mah mouf eh num!” She silently scowled.

"Lunch?" Brenley parroted, his mind running through a number of awkward mealtime scenarios before latching onto the one that was most acceptable. Colleagues in science, toasting a day of exploration and study. Yes. That's exactly how it would...
He was jolted out of his own head by Hel's spit-dampened leaf, his brows lifting curiously as it missed his shoe by only a couple of inches. Apparently, this one had not been as pleasant tasting as the first. He made a note of her findings, adding, "I could get you more of the other one to wash the taste away," in a surprisingly cheeky monotone as he finished writing. He swallowed as soon as the words had left him and he seemed to remember that she could probably kick his a**.
Bren began to edge away in what he hoped was a subtle way, picking up a third leaf at random and offering it to her. "Last one?"
