Welcome to the Destiny City University Cultural Festival!

Taking a page out of the leaflets of schools in Japan, all of Destiny City's major schools have come together to put on a very special event: a cultural festival! These fairs are designed to highlight the achievements of students and clubs at each school, and to give people a chance to enjoy the works of others - as well as allowing parents to evaluate where they want to send their children.

Each school is hosting their own festivals, but they're all on the same day, and it's easy enough to get from one to the others, right?

It also provides an opportunity to foster interaction between students of different schools!

This ORP will be open until midnight EST on November 17, at which point I will post closers and lock the threads!

Here are the festival threads for each school:
Knightside Elementary
Hillworth Grammar
St. Magdalena’s Seminary
Meadowview High
Azure Valley Academy
Crystal Academy
Horizon Institute of Science and Technology
Sovereign Heights Prep

Baseball Team
Involved Students: Chris Gallo. Others welcome!
Faculty Advisor: Coach. He obviously has a name, but for the sake of leaving things open for others, he'll just be called Coach.
Booth Description: The DCU baseball team is raising money for Destiny City's local Boys & Girls Club by hosting a Kissing Booth. For a donation of just $5 you can smooch one of the participating players, of which Chris is one. While Chris's partner Paris supports this endeavor (enthusiastically, says Sun), Chris would like to remind everyone that kissless donations are also acceptable!

Jewelrymaking
Involved Students: Arian Laith, NPCs from the Jewellery and Silversmithing course. Anyone else welcome to join though
Faculty Advisor: Who's your teacher? NPC
Booth Description: A few members from DCU's Jewellery and Silversmithing course have banded together temporarily to run a booth for the festival. In honour of the occasion there will be some origami jewellery (earrings and simple pendants) on sale. There will also be a few pendant-making demonstrations and the opportunity to pick through some of the beads on the stall and ask one of the booth runners to make up a simple pendant for you (for a small fee) with all proceeds going to The Ark (an animal rescue home).

Dance Department
Involved Students: Paris Gallo. Some NPCs. Other PC dancers are definitely welcome! :3
Faculty Advisor: Department Head is a heretofore unnamed NPC. Individual students have their own faculty advisers.
Booth Description: While not a club, the DCU Dance Department has decided to use the event as a way to garner interest and support from students, faculty, and local citizens. The department has sometimes been known to struggle in acquiring new talent due to fluctuations in the economy and the highly competitive nature of the art. As they search for ways to showcase the talent they do have in their ranks, the Dance Department puts on a variety of shows and performances over the school year, some of which DCU students can attend for free.

The Dance Department's booth will be nestled near that of DCU's baseball team (at Paris's insistence; she might have had to do a lot of convincing of faculty members and event organizers to make this a reality), in the hopes that the spectacle caused by the baseball team will not only prove amusing, but also bring a bit more notice to the booth right next door than the Dance Department might have received otherwise. The booth itself will be comprised of little more than a standard table covered by a festive Nutcracker themed tablecloth, with an iPad propped up streaming through videos of various performances and variations by the department's dancers. A variety of pamphlets and programs will be available, as well as a list of course descriptions and requirements for those who might be interested in pursuing a major (or minor). There will also be a jar for donations. (Good costumes don't come cheap!)

Students who assist in running the booth are encouraged to bring snacks. Paris will be supplying homemade chocolate chip cookies, individual snack-sized bags of trail mix, and hot apple cider!

Future Teachers Association
Involved Students: Aurora Namid and NPCs (any other characters that are studying to be teachers are free to join!)
Faculty Advisor: NPC Teacher, unless someone with a teacher character wants to be the head. :3
Booth Description: Bake sale funding the Future Teachers Association (as if Aurora could ever participate in a charity or event that didn't include one)! There is a large variety of treats (though mostly sweets) and all are decorated with school related themes such as apples, black boards, papers, crayons, buses, etc. Beyond the baked goods there are also flyers talking about the teaching program at DCU, pictures showing the members in action working with students or preparing lesson plans, and other literature in an attempt to draw in more members or donations for the program. Children are our future, support the people who will be teaching and helping guide our future!

((Breaking it down: Apple shaped Cake pops, Sugar cookies shaped like buses, lockers, and books, Brownies that look like blackboards, cupcakes decorated to look like globes and others that are decorated with candy crayons, Rice Krispie Treats shaped like apples, cartons of milk, and regular apples tied with a pretty bow. There are a few more expensive cakes, pies, and fancier desserts set back on display tables that are available for larger donations.

* If others would like to join and offer other products like crafts or whatever I'm totally fine with more stuff at the booth!))

To say that Paris was amused would be somewhat of an understatement.

But then she didn't have the proper words in her vocabulary to describe her mood, so “amused” would have to do. It had taken a lot of convincing of a lot of people to get her department's booth situated beside that of the baseball team (“Think of the attention! Isn't that what you guys want?”), but in the end it was so worth it—just as she'd known it would be.

She sat in her chair behind the table covered by a Nutcracker-themed tablecloth (clearly the obvious and terribly unoriginal choice), her posture expectant as she grinned victoriously and waited to watch the spectacle she hoped would soon be taking place next door.

Perhaps it was cruel of her to so thoroughly enjoy something that clearly made her husband a bit uneasy. Some might even find it surprising that she would approve. But it was for charity. And, besides, she was totally secure in their relationship. What did she care if a bunch of people they didn't know wanted to come up and pay five bucks for a measly little peck? It was silly—hilarious, even. And, yes, it was for a good cause.

Anyway, she got way better than a little peck.

Way.

For the moment she stayed at her own booth (that was ostensibly what she was here for), enjoying the snacks she'd prepared while she waited for anyone with any sort of interest to approach so that she might converse with them and answer questions or... whatever else the department expected her to do here. But she kept grinning, and lifted a hand to wiggle her fingers in a little wave in Chris's direction.

Keren Della-Blue wasn't much interested in the tables going on at her own school. She'd missed enough of the school year to not be involved any clubs, and with only seven months left until graduation and a full course load, coupled with the pressure of college applications, she didn't much see the point in joining any now. Instead, she beelined to the DCU booths, eager to find information on athletics. If there were a chance of her going there next year, she wanted to know what she was in for!

It had never quite sat right with her the HITS had no athletic teams. Playing pickup basketball at the rec center wasn't the same as tearing down the court as a Crystal Academy Valkyrie, and Keren was looking forward to playing what she thought of is real basketball once she got into college. She didn't see a booth for the basketball team, of course, but maybe it had been misplaced!

Maybe, if Keren paced back and forth from the baseball team's booth to the dance team's booth and back, the basketball team's booth would appear. Magically. Like Platform 9 and 3/4ths.

Right?

Okay. No. But it was worth a try. Keren hesitated, watching a video playing at the dance team's booth, and then stepped a little closer. "Um. How much is the cider?" she asked the blonde girl in charge. "It's kinda cold out, yeah?" Well. November.

Ah! A person!

Paris perked up as soon as she heard the voice and was made away that someone had approached. Of course, she was generally perky enough as it was, so it wasn't too dramatic of a change—just a straightening in her chair and a quick lean forward instead of reclining. She gave the girl a quick once over to determine whether or not she'd actually seen her anywhere before, and after arriving upon “no” Paris looked more fully up into the girl's face with a welcoming smile.

And she had to look up. This girl was tall! Paris made a few other quick observations as to the girl's size and general build and wondered if she should start in on a little departmental promotion or if she should just stick to the snacks.

“Oh my God, it's so cold. I should have brought a jacket or something,” Paris said, as she sat there in little more than a pair of leggings and a loose pink sweater. “The cider's free, though,” she added, and nudged a stack of cups forward in case the girl would like to take some. Then she tapped a large plastic container, clear but for the Angelina Ballerina stickers that had been stuck on there, and a colorful paper sign that proclaimed “Starving Artists – Please Donate!”

It was a bit tasteless, but Paris had never really been known for her good taste.

“But we accept donations,” she added. “Do you go here? Or just getting a feel for it? Either way I'm supposed to yap at you about how majoring in dance can change your life and take you places, but that's probably not true for everyone and I think it's kind of bullshit anyway so I'll spare you the spiel. Are you looking for anything in particular?”

Keren poured herself a cup of cider, then reached into her pocket and rounded up a few spare dimes and pennies for the collection jar - she liked their wit. "Thanks," she said, taking a sip. Maybe it was store bought. Maybe it was someone's old family recipe. Either way, it did the trick. "Maybe you should sample your wares," Keren suggested to the girl behind the table. "It might warm you up."

Leaning in, in a way that she tried to make look conspiratorial but was mostly doing because the festival was sort of loud, Keren explained, "I don't go to DCU, but it's one of the schools I'm looking at for next year." The jury was out on whether she'd actually wind up there - Keren was still telling herself it was a safety, but she had a sinking feeling. "Actually," she added. "I've been set on going pre-med since age five. So you can save your breath."

Not that the blonde didn't seem nice! It was just - Keren hadn't ever taken to dance. It wasn't violent enough! She liked contact sports. "I'm not very graceful, anyway," she admitted. "You wouldn't happen to know if the basketball team has a table, would you?"

Aloysius walked in quietly and looked around, his eyes instantly floated over to the dance department booth. First off it seemed to be put together well, especially the food. A wonderful aroma was coming from the table as he slowly walked up to the booth. He was still a bit hungry since he hadn't eaten since the night before because he had spent a lot of time practicing a new piece that he had been working on for awhile. He also felt a bit bad about not really attending any other events that were not directly related to his music or tutoring.

"Excuse me if I am interrupting but I was wondering how much a cookie costs, as well as the cider?" He looked between the two people, the one at the booth as well as behind it. A moment later he had his hand on his wallet in case he would need it as he shifted the weight of his viola in his opposite hand. He knew too well that being an artist of any type was a big burden on the wallet and was ready to donate a few dollars after he got his answer.

Paris took a cup for herself and quickly filled it with cider with a “Don't mind if I do!” once the girl had gotten her share.

“DCU's a good school to go to if you want to stay in town. Not too many other choices as it is, but they've got decent programs, so...” she said, but elaborated no further than that. There could be plenty of reasons why someone would want to remain in Destiny City, but of course for Paris that reason had less to do with family and friends and finances and more to do with a magical war.

“I'm actually not too sure if the basketball team has a table,” she added, leaning over the dance department's table to try and look around the area for anything that stood out or screamed “basketball.” Unfortunately, there was nothing that immediately grabbed her attention, so she sat back down and set her cup aside to begin riffling through the papers she'd bought with her. “You'd think they'd give us a map or something. Crap, did they? I can't find one. They might have some up at the student union. I figure it'd make sense if most of the sports teams had booths that were close together, but I don't see them around here. Maybe they're set up closer to the arena...”

After having no success in finding anything even remotely helpful in her pile of course descriptions, Paris set about straightening up the papers as yet another person approached.

“I feel so popular!” she said cheerfully. “The cookies and cider are both free. I made the cookies myself! But we accept donations! My name's Paris, by the way,” she said to the both of them, eyeing the young man's instrument with moderate interest as she asked, “You play the violin?”

Keren moved out of the way to let the new boy approach the table and help himself to refreshments, then reached forward and helped herself to a cookie, which she dipped experimentally into her cider. "Thanks for looking," she said sympathetically to the blonde. "The arena's a good idea. I'll go check in a bit."

Well, maybe just as soon as she finished her cider and got another cup for the road. Keren bit into her cookie and smiled enthusiastically. "These are really good," she enthused, once she'd chewed and swallowed the bite. (Manners!) The cider was still a little bit hot to drink, but the company wasn't bad if she was going to stand here a while longer. "You could get me to be a dancer if you bribed me with baked goods. Maybe."

She certainly fancied herself graceful enough. And it couldn't be hard, right?

Well. Maybe.

Keren blew on her cider and took another bite from her cookie. "So you do. Um. Ballet?" she asked.

“Well, you know, some of us do have to watch our figures,” Paris joked. She knew it wasn't often a joking matter, but humor (or a weak attempt at it) was her salvation when it came to these subjects. “I figured homemade is better than store bought. And I like to bake anyway. Take as many as you'd like,” she said, both to the girl as well as to the boy with the instrument that, to Paris, looked like a violin.

“Is the ballet that obvious?” she asked lightly, and made a show of looking herself over. Skinny, pale, tiny and compact, she knew she looked the part. “I've done some hip-hip and jazz, too,” she said, as if to try and fight the image of the delicate little dancing doll most people judged her to be, as they forgot (or perhaps chose to overlook) the strength ballet required to perform.

“But, yes, ballet. The department has beginner classes if you're ever interested,” she offered. “I don't always bring cookies to the studio, but I could be persuaded. Even if you just want to do it for fun or get some exercise in, it might be something to think about when you're buried under all those pre-med books. Dance has plenty of health benefits. Er... if you do it right. Lots of people try it to get their phys. ed. credit out of the way.”

She shuffled through her stack of papers again, pulling out a list of offered courses with their accompanying descriptions. “Here, in case DCU ever strikes your fancy and you want to take a look. There's ballet, ballroom, hip-hop, jazz, some modern and contemporary too, plenty to choose from. There are a couple of classes on African Dance I've been wanting to take if I can just figure out how to fit them into my schedule. And then one of our instructors teaches belly dancing during the spring semesters, and my faculty adviser's trying to get a pole dancing class through, so if you're ever looking to improve your flexibility, endurance and coordination doing something fun and a little outside the norm...”
