The desert is a vast place filled with death and very little life, only those who are brave or stupid enter into the dry world. Coop was not sure which one he was at that moment he and Anaon stopped at the visage point on the mountain which over looked the sand covered landscape. Trepidation filled him and he looked at the mare beside him, who appeared so calm and yet he knew that her emotions were raging inside of her, small traces of doubt would soon become crippling if they did not move quickly and pass the point of no return. “Anaon, let us refill our supplies and then we can enter the desert.” He wanted to make sure that they both had enough water for this journey. He went to the mountain stream and walked into the icy waters, allowing the wicker baskets upon his back to be filled with mountain fresh water. Shivering he removed himself from the river and turned to Anaon. Her green eyes kept scanning the desert, was she trying to see the place where they needed to go? He shrugged, she would talk when she was ready; carefully he collected the sweet grass around him and placed it in the baskets on Anaon’s back, soon they were full of grass and Anaon had not yet moved. “Anaon, please drink some water and then we will head down the mountain.”

What was she thinking? She was risking the life of Coop for what seemed like a fool’s errand, they were entering a world where if they were not prepared, then there was a slim chance of survival. She knew that Coop was talking to her but she did not hear his words, her thoughts were only on the vast death trap in front of her. This was the last chance that they could turn around, the last chance to chicken out. She shook her head, she could not do this anymore, talking herself out of something this important. She was doing this for Amelia, for her mother, for happiness of her family. Coop’s words finally made sense, he wanted her to get water, so her thirst would be satiated before there was no more water. “Thank you Coop. You really are a kind soul to be helping me with this journey. I was a complete stranger to you only a few weeks ago, and now you feel like one of my closest friends.” She smiled at him, how did she get lucky enough to find a friend like him when the world seemed at its darkest?

Coop’s heart did a little flip in his chest, her smile had caused butterflies to erupt in his stomach. No, he could not be having these feelings now, she was his friend, and he could not be falling for her. She had just gotten over a lost love and he was still suffering from the love who tried to kill him. They were definitely a pair. He watched over her as she drank her fill of the water and then they slowly began their trek down the mountain, the water heavy weight upon his back, but comforting at the same time. They were doing this, they were going into the vast desert to find a flower to save Anaon’s sister. Coop kept thinking back to the smile Anaon gave him, he knew that he was falling for her, even though he was trying to pretend all he felt for her was a friendship. Anaon was a lovely mare who was determined to do anything to save her sister and her family; he loved that about her and knew that by the end of this trip he would be completely in love with the feisty little mare. What worried him the most, was what Anaon would do once she discovered his feelings for him. Would she reject him kindly or reciprocate his feelings? He desperately hoped that it was the latter.

Sand was an interesting substance beneath the hooves, it flowed around the hooves with each impression, yet it was solid. They had been walking on the uneven granules for a few days and they were finally nearing their destination. Every now and again Anaon would bump against Coop as they walked and her heart would begin to race. Was she starting to get feelings for her pink friend? The way she was feeling towards Coop was different than how she felt toward Lucian. With Lucian it was more of a deep insatiable need, when she was with him, her veins felt like they were aflame and her soul had found its mate. But with Coop, it was different. While with Lucian it was fire, Coop was water. He soothed her aches and healed her wounded soul; his constant companionship was a balm on her broken heart. Her feelings for him were not born out of desire, but of friendship. He was her rock during this adventure and she believed she would not have gotten this far without him.

Anaon turned her gaze to the stallion beside her, his muscles flexed as he took each step, the water he carried barely sloshed with his careful gait, “Coop… I… Thank you so much for all of this, I know I keep telling you this, but I really could not have done this without you. Thank you for coming with me and giving me strength to find this flower and for being my friend.” She did not say that she may wish for them to be more than friends, the idea was still too new for her to voice. And what if he turned her down? She could not handle another broken heart so soon after her last. She would survive, but at what cost? Would she no longer care for love? Would she wish to become a Spinster with Alma? Anaon gave a little snort, such a strange image that would be.

The two of them had said little to each other during the two day trek, for there really was nothing to say. They knew each other well enough that most of what they did was silent communication. Coop’s heart beat rapidly in his chest, did Anaon know that each time she bumped into him how she made him feel? Was she doing it on purpose? Why did he have to fall in love with her? He knew that if Lucian ever came back into her life, Coop would have to make a hard decision, so would it not be best for him to forget about loving her? He was not really sure what had happened between Anaon and Lucian, but it seems that Lucian failed to appear to give his goodbyes. There could be many reasons why this had happened, but Coop never voiced them to Ana, he let her continue to believe what she must; he did not want to dredge up old memories. That was one of the main reasons why he did not tell her the full story of his first Love. Anaon knew of her of course, but she did not know how much She still haunted his memories.

Blood rushed to Coop’s face and he bowed his head, “Anaon…” There was so much he wanted to say to her at that moment, but then they stumbled upon shade. Surprised he looked up at a huge rock face. Paintings colored the wall of stone, black figures of humans holding spears bowing before a great tree in a middle of a lake and upon the tree a single blooming flower. Flames danced at the base of the tree. His green eyes opened wide, “Were here.” His voice came out in a reverent whisper. Slowly they walked together, looking for the secret entrance that the detective had mentioned. Daylight was passing and they still had not found the entrance when Coop let out a startled breath, the last rays of the run danced upon the wall creating shadows, he walked forward and let out a woop. “ANAON! Over here! I found the entrance!”

He carefully made his way into the cave, keeping his eye open for rattlers or other creatures that could cause them harm. It was much cooler inside the cave than out in the desert, he did not realize how much he had missed the cool protection of shade. Anaon was standing next to him, she was riveted in spot, he looked in the direction of her glowing eyes and gasped.

Her bright eyes opened wide and all thought seemed to escape her. Amazement and awe filled her entire body. Before her growing in the sand and winding its way up the jagged rock wall was the most beautiful flower she had ever seen. The flower looked like a rose, but it was more vicious, sturdier than its delicate family members. The red and orange petals appeared soft, but they were protected by long red thorns which bent toward the inside of the flower, as if it was protecting it from those who wished to collect the seeds from the center. On closer inspection of the petals it seemed as if they bore flame markings, this was truly the flower they sought. A delicious aroma wafted to her nose and the mare closed her eyes, tears threatened to spill. Quickly she blinked them away and turned a determined look to her pink friend. It was time to get to work.

Coop walked to Anaon when she turned around, determination set in her gaze. He grabbed the empty basket off her back with his teeth and set it upon the ground. They had to be quick but also careful, they had a few minutes before the cave would be cast into darkness. He grabbed a sun bleached skull and began to use it as a shovel to put sand into the basket. Once the basket was half full with the granules of sand, the pink stallion stopped. “I wonder how this flower will fair in the less dry and hot environments of Kawanii. Hopefully your mother’s skill with plants will keep it alive. Oh, just in case, let’s get some of those seeds that those lethal looking thorns are protecting.” He was not skilled in herbology and he knew that Anaon was just as skilled as he was. How were they going to do this? Take the desert rose across the dead landscape and into the temperate area where Anaon last saw her mother? Would the rose even be able to survive the transfer? Was what they were doing all for naught? Quickly he pushed the thoughts away, it was not the time nor the place to be having these worries. They had about a minute left before they were cast in total darkness. It still had yet to appear to him that the cave had not gotten darker as night progressed, his thoughts where absorbed in the movements of the brown mare standing at the base of the jagged rock face.

She gave Coop a grateful smile as he worked hard filling up the basket with sand, she was glad that her collection of bones came in use and were not just extra weight to be carried through and out of the desert. While the stallion scooped up sand, the mare turned her attention to the desert rose before her, her eyes followed the intricate detail of the weavings of each of the vines and when she found the shortest vine with the flower upon it, she began to dig carefully, searching for the roots in the dry sand. It seemed like forever, but it was only a few short moments when she finally saw the thin roots of the rose bush. Careful to avoid the thorns that were on the flower as well as the vines, Anaon pulled the roots free of the earth and placed the plant into the basket Coop had just finished filling. He was talking about the seeds and how they should collect some. She nodded her head and released the plant, “Be careful of the thorns, they will draw blood.”
PostPosted: Thu Jan 02, 2014 9:42 pm

Coop held his breath as he watched her peel the plant off the jagged rock wall. He did not move, his green eyes were locked on the mare and her slight movements. When the flower came free and hung limp in her maw, he let out an auditable sigh of relief. As Anaon made her way to the basket, he moved out of her way and grabbed the bleached skull one more time. Once the roots touched the sand, he added more to cover up the delicate tendrils. He then carefully arranged the vines in a spiral on top of the fresh sand with the desert rose in the middle. His movements were careful, but the thorny plant still drew blood. Coop winced and sent a silent thanks to any god that was listening that the thorns were not poisonous.

Once the flower was arranged nicely in its temporary home, Coop turned to smile at Anaon, “And now for the seeds.” It was in that moment that he realized that they should have been in complete darkness and stumbling around like they were blind. His gaze went up to the cave ceiling and his breath left him in startled awe. Phosphorescent creatures of some sort covered the top of the rough cave; it was like looking up at a star filled night.

“It is so… Breathtaking.” He seemed at a loss for what other words would describe the scene before him. The loveliness of the cave swept him along in a giddy almost drunk excitement, he turned his gaze to Anaon, “But it pales in comparison to your beauty Anaon. I love you.”

Coop stopped as he realized what he had let slip, horror and dread filled him. What had he done? The seeds of the desert rose were forgotten as he stared at Anaon, wishing with all his might that he could go back into the past and take back those words. Her silence was a knife to the heart, he did not want to lose his best friend. Coop knew that he would do anything to remain her friend and he should have not wished for more. It was only going to cause pain and heart ache.

Shock filled the mare’s body, tingles of happiness or fear shook her legs. He loved her. Coop Amores loved her Anaon Nox. She had been hoping during their travel together that he may start feeling the same way that she did toward him, but it was just a dream, a fantasy, now that the words were said out loud she was filled with a sense of dread. The last time she had voiced her feelings to another stallion he had abandoned her, left her with a broken heart. She gave herself a mental shake, no, Coop is not like Lucian. Coop was there to pick up the messy pieces of her short, bright, romance with the pale stallion. Coop was her emotional rock. And he loved her. Silence continued to fill the space as she tried to grapple with her emotions. To her it felt as if time had stood still, but minutes were passing by and yet she uttered not a word.

Why was she not saying anything? He wanted to hide his face and never see her again, he was mortified. He had risked it all with this relationship, he had not felt this way since Her and now the mare he loved may not have the same feelings toward him. Coop knew that this was an option that this could happen. He was a match maker after all and how many of those couples lasted only to dissolve into nothingness or how many couples failed before they even were able to say hello. He shook his head, and gathered his courage, “Anaon, I know that what I have said is sudden, but these feelings have been growing ever since I met you. On that first day you came into my life, I wanted to be the one to dry your tears and to make you happy again. I wanted to always be there for you. I know that my saying these words will affect our relationship, but if you do not feel the same way for me, I would love to remain your friend, and help you find the love you so rightfully deserve. Because, Anaon, you are an amazing mare. You have gone to the desert in search of a flower for your sister, you have been selfless and even when you were emotionally distraught you continued on for your sister, for your mother. These are all the things that I love about you. You are creative and mischievous, astute and caring, the word still surprises you and you are easy to talk to.” Coop stared into the mare’s bright green eyes, “You have made me feel alive again during this journey. I had been alone before this, wandering, slowly getting over my own broken heart. With you I have become whole.”

Anaon pulled herself out of her inner emotional turmoil; his words brought tears to her eyes. They were so lovely, she did not understand how he could have loved someone who had been as broken as she was, but his words had the desired effect. Her fear of being rejected vanished; Coop was too good to do such a wicked thing. With him she could be happy, she was happy. “Coop, I love you too. You have been the rock that has held me in place; you have given me strength to accomplish this quest of mine. You have done so much for me, a stranger in the beginning of these travels and now hopefully something more. I don’t want us to remain just friends any longer… I love you!” Her words gushed out and a smile appeared on her countenance. She walked over to Coop and nuzzled him, “Thank you for all that you have done, and you are truly an amazing stallion who is blessing with a loving heart.”

Elation filled the stallion, he could have danced around the cavern if he was not holding precious cargo upon his back, “You love me? YOU LOVE ME!” A bright smiled appeared on his face and he returned her nuzzle happily. “You have just made me the happiest stallion in the world Miss Anaon Nox.” She wanted the same thing he did; she wanted them to be more than friends. His mind went to lifemating, but he wanted to ask her grandfather’s permission first, since her father did not seem to be in her life. For a moment sadness filled his heart, he wished that he could share this with his family, but his sister was killed by his last Love and his parents have been dead for years. The stallion gave himself a mental shove, he would not be depressed during a happy time such as this, Anaon loved him and that was all that mattered. They stood together side by side, enjoying the company of each other and soon the florescent bugs dimmed and the cave was cast in darkness. A dawn of a new day was only a few hours away, but to the two soquili within the cave, their new life had just begun.
