From the interview room, the Mists crossed the main courtyard of Deus Ex. Past the training yard where a group of Suns were apparently getting ready to attack a pinata, past the window where a certain Death assistant was apparently getting his creep on, past whatever the Moon and Life divisions were up to. They didn't quite go to the Lighthouse. Instead their path veered off and, once hidden away and out of sight, Aria opened a portal and ushered them in.

The other side was gloomy. A dark, gray sky promised rain above them as a squeaky weathervane twisted and turned, pointing the direction of the wind. They were on a field of some sort, one that had been trampled. The far end of the field had what looked to be a large weathered barn, complete with a dark pile near it. Perhaps it was whatever was inside of it? The barn itself looked like it could collapse at any minute. On another side of the field away from the barn was another building that looked like it had work recently done on it. The lights were on, however it was too far away to see what was going on inside.

Their division leader lead them across the trampled field towards another section of it. This one held what remained of a fall harvest: cabbage, carrots, onions, potatoes, and turnips. She glanced at the hopeful applicants. "Here we are. I haven't picked a name for it yet, but it's still in its trial period. I finally decided to move my growing operation off-island," she explained as she knelt down to examine a growing vegetable. She shook her head as she stood, dusting her hand off on her coat. "Thing is, something keeps eating my vegetables here. I've already lost a good portion of my crop, but let's see how well each of you can handle a new situation, yeah?"

Aria gestured towards what remained. "Go ahead and choose a crop. There's markers at the end which'll let you know what's being grown in case you don't know what's what. There's no advantage or disadvantage to choosing a particular crop. All of them might get trampled and wrecked tonight if I'm particularly unlucky." A leveled glance was thrown towards each of them. "I'll explain a bit more once you've made your decisions."

OOC

MIST INTERVIEW

- The Mist interview/trial will have SEVERAL STEPS/events.
- First step: pick your crop.
- Second step: please list your STATS in either an OOC box or spoilers.

Name:
Rank:
Sun:
Moon:
Life:
Death:
Mist:

Sun - All skills pertaining to attacking. Knowledge of using other weapons. Feats of strength. Think "str."

Moon - All skills pertaining to defending. Moderate healing skills (first aid focus). Think "endurance."

Life - All skills pertaining to scientific pursuits such as runic tech/moderate healing skills (less first aid more emergency room know-how). Knowledge of using/maintaining equipment, both runic and non. Think "skill," kind of along the same lines as an astronaut knowing how to use their equipment.

Death - All skills pertaining towards information gathering/investigations. Information-gathering. Think "int."

Mist - All skills that don't fall into the above categories. This is essentially your "luck" stat.

Stat Numbers:
Trainees get 20 points for distribution
Intermediates get 25 points for distribution
Full Hunters get 30 points for distribution
(please make these as IC as possible according to your character's focus/strengths)

The upcoming trials will be a test of your character's luck and abilities; these numbers will come into play and offer some advantages (and maybe even disadvantages). There is no "right" or "wrong" way; file points according to your character's experiences/strengths. ie, Lance would have most of his points in Sun with a little bit in Life and Mist, with 1 or 2 points in Moon apiece.

Basically, I am stealing liz's format from the House Cup because it's useful + gives me a good idea of your character's various "strengths." c:

IF YOU ARE LATE:
You are intercepted on your way to the Lighthouse by another Mist, who blindfolds you, takes you to the Lighthouse, and then warps you here with unnecessary rough-housing because you don't get many chances to hassle a future higher up and get away with it.

As they passed through the portal, Cass gave everything a curious look - not in that child like 'what here do I want to take home with me' sort of way, but more of a 'if I was asked to make a canon in 2 minutes flat, what could I actually use to do that' sort of a way.

Aria's explanation was met with a small raise of her brows. She sure had moved everything fast - guess that was the smart idea when 'Kaiju' (there were so many mental bunny ears around this it wasn't funny) were likely to spawn and stomp on everything. And less FEAR. So less of a chance of sentient veggie time.

Still, it sounded like a pretty sound test run for all of them, and Cass shot both of the other girls a thumbs up. "Good luck." she smiled as she moved around the field towards the marker that said Potatoes.

She wasn't sure why she had expected an actual, simple interview. This was Deus after all.

Immediately upon exiting the portal, Stormy turned wide eyes to the scenery. Flat field meant at least they'd see something before it got close . . . Though she too was surprised at how relatively fast the operation had been moved from underground. She was pleased, though, to see most of it had made it out, and that whatever damage they had caused before hadn't dented the harvest too much.

More importantly, they weren't sentient.

Stormy moved to the patch of carrots for the trial; it had been the crop she and Nevada had taken down and, acutely aware of standing on her own against two full fledged Hunters, she sought the familiar. "Right, then . . . " She touched two fingers to her temple in both salute to Aria and as a response to Cass, lightly bouncing on her feet.

Alright, don't think of this as part of the interview; think of this as defending something important with your fellow Mist sisters. The thought was more appealing and soothed her rising nerves.

Candace also looked around at the area they stepped through the portal. She had to see where they were, what was around them, what could be used just in case. Was this..a farm? Huh. She smiled at Stormy and reached over to affectionately tug at a piece of hair, tugging her close in a quick one-armed hug as they walked. "You'll do great, Belle," she whispered to her before letting Stormy go to walk up to the field they were stopping at. Ah, that was it.

"Huh...that doesn't sound too bad." She moved to stand in front of the lettuce crop. "So are there footprints or anything to give some kind of hint what this thing might be?"

Molly had been intercepted on her way to the Light House…and she was very confused to say the least as she was blind folded and then rough housed into the portal…well…couldn’t say she was upset. She’d been through worse. It just made for an even more flustered trainee once she finally did arrive, luckily catching the tail end of what she was supposed to be doing.

“I’m so sorry I’m late!” She cried, taking up her spot at the onions. Molly loved onions…especially sautéed in butter. Mmm.

At Candace's question, Aria gave her a long look. It was the type of look that came with a certain smugness that indicated she knew more than they did. Then again, that wasn't anything new especially when it came to the superiors on Deus Ex. "Good question. Why don't you take a look around? But first -- Molly!"

"You're just in time," Aria said as the intermediate arrived, changing the subject. "All right, let's get started. Whatever's wrecking these only comes out at night. It's only shown up fairly recently too, but before the main garden back on Deus went haywire. I'm not sure whether it's a run of the mill animal or something from Halloween."

Aria raised an arm, gesturing towards the fields. "All of you will have full run of the farm, but don't stray too far. Your goal is to defend your crop of choice. And if you're not around, that's a bit difficult isn't it? However," Aria pointed towards the barn, and the large pile next to it. "Next to the barn is a collection of, well. Junk. You can use that to construct a fence or traps. Whatever you do, don't go in the barn."

Aria crossed her arms, giving them a glare. "And before you think about peeking in there, it's a cow. Leave it be, having things stomp around the farm at night is bad enough for the animal's stress."

"I believe that's about it." Aria shrugged. "I'll be here if you have any questions, but this is a chance for me to see how far along your training as a Mist hunter has come. With that... Begin."

The OOC

As a head's up I am going to be scarce the 8-10th, so if you have questions/concerns please don't hesitate to reach out to me!

You guys now have free reign of the farm! You can perform five actions before preparation phase is over. Here are the actions you can take:

  • Prepare Traps: Prepare mundane traps such as spikes, barbed wires, etc. If successful, you can add to your attack.
  • Prepare Defenses: Create defensive barricades that will mean your crops have a better survivability rate. Maybe. Will add to the crop's HP if successful.
  • Set up Runic Traps: Turns out some of the things in that junk pile were deactivated runes. If you can reactivate them they may prove useful... Can provide a wide variety of effects if successful.
  • Investigate: You can learn more about your surroundings. Please specify which you'd like to learn more about, as successful investigating can lead to additional bonuses:
    - Crops (specify which)
    - Surrounding Woods
    - Wrecked Fields
    - Farm House
    - The Barn
    - Other (please specify)

When you've chosen which action to take, please post it in bold red. Repeat actions for additional bonuses, however remember you can only roll five times. You can do it one roll per post or all five at once.

To perform any of the above actions, roll 1d10 and add your stat to it. ie, if I wanted to investigate my crop I would RP looking around it and roll 1d10, and add my death skill. If I had a low death skill, I could add in my Mist skill. You can only add your Mist skill to ONE attribute ONCE.

Aside from that, talking to Aria costs nothing~

Cass was totally suspicious about the cow. Clearly it was a mutant cow and if they looked at it they would turn to stone. Or something. Maybe she'd try to bribe someone with a candy bar to go take a look at the cow for her. Or 5 dollars. That could buy a taco meal, man. That was good money to bribe someone to look at a cow with.

But she didn't have $5 on her so it would have to happen another time. Alas. Maybe she could bribe Aria later to let her see the cow.

Never the less, Cass' first course of action was to investigate the potatoes she'd taken post by.

Yep. Those sure were potatoes. Maybe. If the sign wasn't there, then it'd just look like a cluster of leaves poking out of a hump on the ground.

POTATOESSSSSSSSSSS they were very unexciting.

Stormy wibbled a little at the attention Candace gave her and offered a little smile in return. Molly got a little wave (oh thank God, now she wasn't the only intermediate there), though she felt a pang of sadness that Nevada hadn't made it. Maybe she wanted a nap instead . . .

Either way, they had their orders. Prep for an attack, don't touch the barn, and try not to smush the crops. Right. Saluting, Stormy got to work. Her first instinct was to check to see what she could learn by investigating the wrecked fields. Maybe she could get a clue about what was going on from there and act accordingly.

When Molly showed up, Candace's face practically lit with joy. Her Mollybird~. "Hey there, pretty lady."

She turned to Aria again as their leader started to give a little more instruction to help them along. Huh..so something new but not brand new? Maybe it was a young Halloween creature or something. Aria was also smart to tell them why they shouldn't go in the barn, because simply telling her not to do it had her very curious. A cow. Right.

Was she sure it wasn't just the cow trampling her crops? That could be a thing.

She would investigate things soon but for starters she was going to set up her defenses. Candace wandered to the junk pile, digging around and carefully pushing things out of her way until she came across a few large planks of wood. Oooh! That could be helpful! She dragged them back to her lettuce crop and built a fence around it. It wasn't perfect but it stood pretty well!

Candace was actually pretty damn proud of this stupid little fence. She took a picture, it'd last longer.

Her lettuce surrounded by a safe wall she felt was pretty damn sturdy for a wall of her creation, Candace wandered off to set some traps. She returned to the pile of junk and found some spikes to hammer into the ground as well as a long string of barbed white. Hey..that could work.

She dropped everything near her lettuce crop and then found a large rock she could carry one-handed. The spikes were hammered almost completely into the ground and the barbed wire was very, very carefully wrap and weave the wiring around the spikes almost like a lattice fence laying flat on the ground.

Perfect.

Her crops were safe for now. Candace decided to investigate what was around them. She noticed Stormy at the trampled fields and followed her over there. She came up behind the girl, putting a hand on Stormy's shoulder to let her know she was there and trying not to surprise her. "Find anything?" Candace asked as she also looked over the fields, crouching down beside one of the crops. Maybe there were footprints or holes or just some sign to tell them what had done this.

She glance was cast toward the farm house and forest that surrounded them. So if the cow was safe they should check those locations too just in case, right?

Investigation: 9 + 2 = 11

As Cass leaned over to look at the potatoes, a hand reached out and held her back. "Wait." Aria knelt down next to her, carefully moving the dirt aside. Not too long after the division lead found the gleam of metal. "Thought so," she murmured. "Someone was thoughtful enough to plant mines here. I wouldn't step onto the potatoes at all if you can help it, just in case."

The fields were a mess. It was a mixture of trampled crops and churned dirt, however there wasn't even a hint of any leftover produce. A majority of it looks like it was once a corn field, or someone's attempt to draw crop circles gone horribly, horribly wrong. In terms of footprints, it's difficult to say whether the perpetrators were humans, animals, Halloween, or a mixture of all three.

It seemed to Stormy that there were an indeterminable mix of both animal and humanoid prints. There were even a few misshapen prints that could possibly suggest a shapeshifter of some sort, but what sort of shapeshifter would attack a garden?
