The kitchens of the Academy are located in the same building as the dining hall. There is a door on the east side of the room that leads into the dining hall proper, and a door on the west that leads down into the ballroom for easy access to events.

The staff of the kitchen work very early in the mornings to late at night, making sure that everyone at the school is properly fed. They do not like to be bothered, as the kitchen runs on a very tight schedule. No students are allowed in without a staff member, unless a prior arrangement has been made.

Inside the kitchen are all manner of kitchen equipment made for producing large quantities of a myriad of foods. Shelves well-stocked with proteins, vegetables, stocks, spices, and other staples line the entire north wall, almost completely blocking out the windows. Wheeled carts are constantly zooming around the kitchen as bussers bring food out to the dining hall and return with empty plates for washing.

Kenton arrived in the kitchens, and immediately flattened himself against a wall to avoid being run over by a cart full of food. He whirled around as another cart whizzed past. The place was hopping already, and there were still a few hours until dinner began. He supposed that made sense, all the food had to be cooked by the time the first diners arrived.

"Excuse me, my name is Kenton Pelagius," he said to a man wearing a tall hat. "We spoke earlier, I've been assigned to help with dinner service. What may I do for you?"

The man nodded, barking instructions at him. Kenton jumped into the fray, used to following split-second orders. This, as far as it was from his history, made him feel the most at home. A busy place, orders shouted across lines of soldiers... or, now, chefs. Perhaps he ought to hang up the waterfighting and take up an apron upon graduation.

Kenton doffed his gloves and his water pouch, depositing them in a communal locker by the door. He scrubbed his hands in the sink on the wall, plucked a knife from the knife rack, pulled out a cutting board, and set to work chopping vegetables for some sort of stew. It seemed no one quite trusted him to do any actual cooking. That was probably for the better; he'd subsisted almost entirely on hardtack and dried meats while deployed. Content with his current role of service, he started chipping away at the massive pile of carrots and celeriac he'd been given to work on.

Kenton arrived in the kitchens and again slammed against the wall to avoid the perpetually zooming cart. The head chef barked orders at him, throwing a few carrots and some celery stalks in his direction for him to catch. Perhaps telling them he'd been in the military had been a bad move.

Kenton grabbed the vegetables and tossed them into the sink. He doffed his gloves and stuck them in the pocket of his robes, scrubbed his hands clean, and went searching for a knife. After locating a bowl and a cutting board as well, he set up camp by the sink to wash and chop the veggies for the soup stock. The chef continued shouting, listing off things for Kenton to do. There was rather a lot today, probably due to the banquet. Since they wouldn't have him at the banquet proper, it seemed they intended to make the most of having him now.

Kenton set to work, chopping and slicing and scraping the pieces into his bowl. Haaaa... it's not glamorous work, but my work never is.

Maeza barely avoided the cart as she entered the kitchens. She sighed and grumbled to herself. She was stuck here for the day. She found the head chef and explained her punishment. The man was even less thrilled than Maeza was. Her told her to wash up and chop vegetables beside the other student. Maeza nodded and scrubbed her hands. She was handed a knife and carrots and got to work. She cut the carrots without mercy, still muttering to herself. "Stupid Viola...ruined everything...and Haidee with her stupid colors..."

The presence of another student broke Kenton's focus. She was mumbling furiously, and chopping vegetables even more so. He scraped the celery he had finished with off of his cutting board, pouring it into the large bowl of soup stock.

It was hard not to eavesdrop on the distressed student, what with her setting up so close to him. Hm. It sounded like she was having social troubles. Kenton gave a tiny shake of his head. Far be it from him to offer advice in that respect. And yet, she was mutilating the carrots beyond repair. Oughtn't he say something?

"Respect, but I believe the chef would like the carrots chopped, not destroyed," he said, resisting the urge to correct her knife technique. She was a fellow student, not one of his men.

Maeza gave the other student an angry glance. "Pardon me, but I highly doubt he'll notice if the poor carrots aren't absolutely perfect," she spat, chopping through another carrot with the same force as the others. "If he does want then perfect, then he'll just have to find someone else, someone who's not in such a bad mood because so far her day has been ruined for not one, but two days in a row. First, turns out the guy I was with was forced to get engaged over the summer, and the fiancee is rude and she's my roommate! On top of that, I was just trying to have a casual conversation and some pretty little princess of color or something shows up and he can see color and he just ignores me for colors. I know he's colorblind and all, but after a whole summer, you'd think he'd at least want to catch up!" she said, chopping another carrot and narrowly missing her finger. She saw the cuts in the board and sighed. The fight left her in a rush, leaving her deflated and a bit out of breath.

Kenton listened to the student rant and rave, vitriol spewing from her mouth. He blinked as she slammed the knife down, barely missing her finger. Kenton slowly reached over and tugged the knife away from her by the flat of the blade, sliding the cutting board out of her reach. "I am sorry, but I do not think I trust you with this right now." He stabbed the knife into the far side of his own cutting board, to be sure she did not grab it back.

Once he did, he looked to the side and caught a glimpse of her face. She was missing an eye. That was peculiar, but not his business. Just behind her were dark, delicate wings, quite different from his own shining dragonfly's pair. Before a passing glimpse could turn into a rude stare, he looked back down at his work.

"Forgive me if I have misheard, but none of that seems to be your fault or in your control," he said quietly. Honestly, it sounded like a petty romantic squabble, something with which he had absolutely no experience. He'd heard Prince Valerius speak of noblewomen when he was still the Crown Prince, but that had all changed. And, Kenton imagined, it was rather different from the lady's point of view. "Raging about it will not change it, as much as you may wish it."

Kenton scooted a barrel of potatoes out from beneath the counter, and held out a potato peeler. "I can handle the carrots. Would you kindly peel these instead?" he asked, careful to phrase his words as a request rather than an order.

Maeza sighed and pulled her hand away from the knife as the other boy took it. She didn't blame him for not trust her with it; she didn't really trust herself at the moment. She stared at the now empty space and sighed. She glanced over at the other, noticing that they shared a scar. He had a lovely pair of wings, the kind she's only heard of in stories of distant lands. At home, everyone's wings were dark. She didn't say anything for a few moments, silently peeling the potatoes. Finally, she nodded and softly said, "Ranting may not change anything, but it does make me feel a bit better. It really helps to have someone listen, so thank you." She was silent for a few seconds before realizing she'd never introduced herself. "I'm Mae, by the way.

Kenton worked in silence, chopping his vegetables and taking the peeled potatoes when the girl finished with them. At least she was no longer cooking so violently. Finally, she spoke again, to thank him for listening. "I am nothing if I cannot serve," he said.

He cracked a small smile, realizing how rude he'd been speaking without an introduction. He took a few steps back and presented himself in a small bow to her, his knife held lightly between his fingers as he did. "I am Lord Kenton Pelagius, of Crescent Tide."

Kenton returned to his work, chopping some chicken into the pot. "Where are you from, Madam?" he asked. "I have never seen wings such as yours."

Though she had heard the school was no longer exclusively for royals, Maeza was a bit surprised to hear the boy- Kenton- was a lord. She said nothing on the subject and smiled when she heard where he was from. "Ireland. I'm a Night Fairy. Our kingdoms have very good relations. My parents often spoke of Crescent Tide and it was always with a pleased tone," she replied. His statement earlier bothered her and she couldn't stop herself before she blurted, "If you are nothing if you cannot serve, then what would you do if you were injure so that you couldn't serve?"

Kenton smiled lightly, thinking of Ireland. Had he actually seen the isle, or only passed it by? "We have sent pleasant waves to the Emerald Isle in the past, though I have never been myself. One day I am sure my route will take me there."

He paused in his chopping, a little startled by her question. "Respect, but it will take a lot to put me down," he said, winking with his injured eye. "If I must leave the military, I suppose I will enter politics and serve as a tactician. If I am so injured that I cannot even speak, I suppose I should like to die," he said honestly. "I think I would rather that than put the burden of my hopeless care on those around me."

Kenton shrugged his shoulders, tossing some celery into the pot. "But that is grim talk. Let us find another topic. Is this your first year?" he asked. "It is mine, as you have surely inferred."

Maeza frowned slightly at Kenton's answer. What an awful life that would be for me, she thought. Didn't he have dreams, goals, places he wanted to visit just for the sake of visiting them? Before Maeza could ask, though, he'd changed the subject. She smiled again and shook her head. "I figured you were new. This is my second year here. Hopefully it will end better than last year," she said as she finished peeling another potato.

Kenton immediately stiffened his back and set back his shoulders. If she was returning, that meant she was definitely a princess and not a noblewoman.

"Madam Princess, what are you doing in the galley?" he asked. "Surely you have better things to attend to."

He took her potato and began cutting it up. "If I may be so bold. May you tell me what happened last year?" He wiped the juices off his knife, the better to cut. "I have heard many a tale and read as many press releases from affected kingdoms as I could find, but I have yet to hear a firsthand account. And I am loathe to ask it of the headmaster himself for fear I may not survive the retelling," he added. Seldom was it that Kenton was honest-to-goodness intimidated, but the headmaster had managed to truly frighten him.

The change in Kenton's posture was not lost on Maeza. She sighed internally, the new formality seeming to weigh her down. "Just call me Mae, okay? Not 'Madam Princess.' Another student seems to think I attacked her when I fell on her, so my punishment was to work here," she said as she started to peel another potato.

Maeza fell silent for a few moments to gather her thoughts. "We were in the middle of the winter ball when we were attacked. I was with some friends...they came after us, and in the heat of the battle I lost my eye and wings...I...that's all for now," she said. Her voice was soft and broken. A tear streaked down her face, but she quickly wiped it away. She didn't want to cry. She hated, absolutely hated crying, and she had done enough of that last year.

Kenton's stare hardened. Two direct orders conflicted in his brain. What to do? "Madam, it would not do to address you informally when you outrank me," he said staunchly. "I am bound by orders from my King to treat everyone with the respect their rank deserves." At the end of the day, after all, his loyalty was to Crescent Tide and no other.

He chopped in silence, listening as she spoke. He listened to her voice break, to the memories flood forth and be stifled, and stopped mid-carrot. He knew the feeling well. How to handle this, from a stranger in a kitchen? Telling his own war stories to a lady was hardly becoming, nor was it wise in the presence of so much food. And a princess, none the less!

Kenton responded by resuming work on his carrot. "Madam Princess, you must not be ashamed of your battle scars, be they visible or not," he said, choosing not to ask through what unknown magic she had reclaimed her wings. "Wear them with pride. They are proof to all who see you that you were stronger than whatever was unwise enough to oppose you."
