Blythe wore a perpetual scowl on his face today, despite the beautiful weather they seemed to be having. His morning had begun with Dire wallowing against the kitchen floor, a pathetic whine permeating the entire household until he couldn't stand it any longer and had crawled out of bed to see what on earth was the matter with her. He had been greeted with several new teeth marks along his cabinetry, table, and quite possibly the floor. He chastised her, of course; the deer knew better than that! Why should she need to gnaw on his things when she had plenty of-

Oh.

It occurred to him then that he had not gone into town recently to restock his pantry, including the cheap hay and grain that he bought just to keep Dire from going off the handle in his battered town home. With her constant foraging for anything that could fit in her mouth she had ruined couches, armchairs (including his favorite one, at that), rugs, a mattress. Her poor behavior knew no bounds.

So he found himself in the market district of Palisade now, one hand on the deer that refused to stay put in a home devoid of food. If he was touching her, she was far less likely to reach out and sample some of the goods being sold... or a child's fingers. His aunt still had not forgiven the deer for the incident with his younger cousin. Or his mother, for her flower garden (which had been a buffet for the gluttonous animal). And now that he thought about it, possibly his sister for the dress...

Blythe had allowed himself too long lost in thought, and Dire homed in on her opportunity like a true delinquent. She bolted from where she stood, making a beeline for a stall filled with delectable smelling herbs and other goodies. Her narrow eyes cast a sour look towards her chosen as he realized what she was about to do, ignoring his angry slew of profanities that came from his mouth next. She she was hungry, and she needed to feed. He could wait.

Darcy laughs softly, nearly bumping into a gentleman, as she darts and weaves through the thickening crowd in the market square. Her cheeks are a little flushed with exertion, having spent an entire morning running to and fro between patrons and is now barely left enough time to catch the late morning vendors. She only hopes that she won't be too late, and will be able to gather the things she needs for a few of her potions.

Finally, she stops in front of her favorite vendor and flashes her a grin, "Morning, Velma!"

"Oh? And where have you been, lately? I haven't seen you in awhile."

Darcy laughs softly, "Can't be everywhere at once, but I tr--- ooph!"

She stumbles, caught off guard, and nearly loses her entire basket of purchases as something, or someone shoves into her quite small frame. She turns sharply, about to give whoever it was a sharp tongue scalding about being rude and just what she thought they could do with such terrible manners, and pauses at the sight of the dark, sleek doe in front of her, a little bewildered.

The creature is eyeing the stall with a gleam in it's eyes, and Darcy has the sudden vision of it diving into the display of herbs, roots, and other things. Velma seems dismayed, and casts her a look as if Darcy might be able to do something. The young witch only arches a brow in response, and turns as she spots a man approaching them quickly -- shouting things that make her grin.

"Guess she belongs to him!" Her tone is mischievous, and, after a moment, Darcy fishes through her pockets and comes up with an apple, "Hey you -- don't go eating those herbs, now! Miss Velma would hardly appreciate that. I have a nice apple you might like, though."

Just as she had been about to delve into the bountiful feast before her, someone addressed her that wasn't Blythe (well, he was addressing her too, but she ignored him). Dire's eyes narrowed as she prepared to let out a defiant bleat when the woman mysteriously procured something from a pocket that looked absolutely edible. Her attention was finally caught, and with her gaze focused directly on the object she began to reach-

"No no nonono do not feed her!' Blythe called as he tried to get through the last portion of the crowd, but it was too late. The deer inhaled the apple, juice dribbling down her dark face as she munched contentedly for a moment. It wouldn't take long before she was seeking more, but she had been placated long enough for her chosen to catch up.

"What have you done?" he gasped as he finally made it to the front of the stall, trying to catch his breath, "Though I suppose you just could not have known.." His voice muttered a few more sentences mostly to himself before he rounded on the deer.

"And you!" he growled, "I told you we would get you something to eat! This is why I leave you at home you.. you..." He couldn't find a suitably angry insult to fling at her in the moment, and dropped his hands to his sides in frustration. Goddamn deer.

"She didn't eat anything, did she?" he sighed at last, turning to the woman across the stall from him, "If she did I will pay whatever it cost." As his anger faded Blythe appeared very weary, energy drained. Dire was just too much for him some days.

It's the first time that Darcy has been face to face with a guardian and a chosen. Unlike some ignorants who refused to believe in the old tales, Darcy has always known that there is more at work in the world than meets the eye. Still, now that she has one of the creatures before her, it's certainly much... well, more, somehow, than she'd ever thought it would be. The deer's eyes are definitely far more intelligent than some dumb beast, and far larger, too. Not to mention the coloring. How on earth could anyone mistake such a being for anything less than what it was?

Ah well. Darcy could aid or fix a number of ailments, but stupidity, unfortunately, is not one of them.

Her attention finally turns to the drawn, pale man, that approaches them, and she watches the exchange with interest.

"I gave her an apple, of course! Poor thing, she seemed rather hungry -- and I was worried she might go for the stand. I need some of those herbs for my patients," Darcy only dealt with people who had an actual need for healing. Sometimes she would sell potions and the like, to keep herself fed, but she never promised that they worked -- yet people still bought them.

She points to a number of herbs in quick succession for Velma to wrap as she speaks, and pays the women, before tucking the bundle into her basket, and faces Blythe with startling green eyes in sharp contrast to her wild, red, hair. Darcy then flashes him a grin which is quite unladylike, but then, well.... Darcy isn't exactly the appearance of a proper lady to begin with.

"Besides, I've decided that others shouldn't have to go hungry if I can help it, and the poor thing," she makes as if to pat the deer, catches Dire's hungry look and pauses before thinking better of it, and withdraws her hand, "seemed rather famished. What's the matter with you, anyway, not feeding her properly?"

Blythe ran his hands over his face, and exasperated sigh escaping his lungs. He could already feel Dire's incessant pushing, sense her determination to eat whatever was in her path. This woman could not have known, he told himself, there was just no way she could understand what a monster the unsuspecting doe was.

"She'll go for whatever she pleases if you give her an inch." he replied, swatting the deer's shoulder as she began reaching for something else on the table. Dire huffed, glaring daggers back at him. "She never stops."

Her grin only caused him to wrinkle his nose, already too fed up with his guardian to deal with anyone, let alone common people. Blythe watched her attempt to give the deer a pat, shaking his head as she eyed the woman's fingers next. No manners at all, really. His eyes narrowed a bit at her accusation; she had no idea how much the stupid animal ate on a daily basis, when in reality a guardian shouldn't need much of anything at all in the manner of food.

"I was just on my way to restock her stores," he replied, sharp exasperation apparent in his voice. He had no desire to sit around town and chit-chat all afternoon, it was a miracle that he had even lasted this long with Dire in tow. "I don't think you understand how she works."

On cue the doe had lost interested in the previously offered fingers and was snuffling around at the bottom of the stall for any fallen bits. She tried to chew the table, some rope, and a rock before she finally found a piece of some miscellaneous herb to set her sights on.

"She literally does not stop." How else could he convey this?

Darcy watches as the doe snuffs about the table, and is unable to suppress a laugh when she attempts to eat, of all things, a rock. What was it, she wonders, that made the creature so insatiable, then, if what the man says is true?

How could a spirit creature require so much food? Certainly, then, it had to be something psychological and she eyes Blythe for a moment but.. no, she realizes he looks far too weary and exasperated to be the cause of it. More the opposite.

Well. That's interesting.

"How is that possible? Where does it all go?" The doe certainly isn't as rotund as one might expect, considering her habits. And the more she watches her the more likely the man's story seems to be. Her suspicions are lessened, for now, and she seems willing to believe him for the moment as the doe gnaws on the leg of the table.

"....Well... have you tried therapy of any sort? I've always heard that Guardians are far more intelligent than regular animals, though this is the first time I've been so close to one." She doesn't add that the impression is far from enlightening, thus far, and wonders if it's possible that Guardians may, at times, be just as... varied as people.

"You're asking the wrong person," Blythe responded, brow quirked, "Becoming chosen certainly does not make you an expert."

He regarded the dark doe as she grew frustrated with the table leg (which was not edible, she seemed to have realized), and went for the tablecloth instead. Blythe was already too tired to tell her no, and resorted to casting a icy glare at the back of her neck. She nibbled on, ignoring him despite being fully aware of his distaste.

Therapy? He could have laughed out loud. He was the one that needed therapy after what this deer had done to him. Before she had butted into his otherwise lovely life he had had everything he could have wanted; money, friends, status... now he had an animal that ruined his furniture and clothing and scared other people away. His own family had become strangers as she pushed them away through one attack or another.

"There are hundreds of totems on the ward tree," he said, voice stiff, "To think that every guardian is a savior to their chosen would be foolish." The doe turned to him, eyes narrowed.

"I.. see.." She supposes that the man may have a point to that, but by the way the doe is looking at him she's not certain the creature agrees. It's hard to tell, in any case.

She wonders what in the world could bring about such a compulsion in a creature that doesn't even need to eat in the first place. That is, if the rumors are true and she certainly has no real reason to doubt them. Darcy is hardly unaware of some of the strange things the world is capable of, that's for sure.

She looks at the doe, "What's her name?"

"If you really would like to learn more, I'm certain Oldcastle may be better." he added slowly after a moment, "There seems to be more information out there, at least. I haven't found the urge to go seeking it myself." His brow furrowed. Although he certainly wanted to have been back in the relative safety of his home... he was out already, and the woman certainly looked disappointed at the mess of a deer he had in tow.

"This would be Dire," he added, and the doe seemed to puff in recognition at her name. "She has her moments, when the mood strikes her." She seemed to have settled for a moment, staring intently at the hedge witch but without malice in her eyes. Intelligence shined through despite her usual demeanor.

"For better or for worse, as the saying goes," he muttered, shaking his head, "I'll be stuck with her for the rest of my life."

Darcy smiles as the doe fixes her strangely intense gaze upon her, and pulls a carrot out of her basket to hand to the doe. She then slides a hand lightly against the creature's muzzle as she chews.

"Dire, well met," that said, she withdraws her hand and looks at the other man.

"Perhaps I shall, as you say. I usually try to make the trip once a year, if I can... I imagine with recent events this year's trip may prove to be especially interesting."

Her green eyes are sharp, and perhaps too knowing for her age as they fix on Blythe. "They say that blessings may come in the most unexpected of ways. Dire may not be what you, or anyone, would particularly hope for in a Guardian but... I hope that, eventually, the two of you may reconcile. There's too much potential in a life to spend your time wishing on what might have been. Better to accept what's here, now, don't you think?" Bold words, from a stranger, but Darcy's spent too much of he own life watching people squander what they have to ever do the same, or to let others go on thinking that way if she can help it.

The woman's words were certainly true enough. Blythe seemed to mull them over for a moment, his hand reaching to absently scratch the back of his neck. Perhaps as she aged Dire would calm down. Maybe. She hadn't so far, but there were many years ahead of them. He had given up a good deal of hope with her, but the woman had a fair point.

"I'll keep that in mind," he replied at length, patting a hand against the doe's shoulder, "It'll be a long shot, however." Dire grunted indignantly, shooting him a flat look before she resumed her scrounging around for tidbits that perhaps had fallen to the ground.
