It was a cool October day, preparations for the upcoming Halloween celebrations were in full swing, and all was peaceful..
Well, until a purple pygmy fox with a black silk ribbon tied in a particularly fancy bow around her neck came rushing across the grass. She ran and ran, though it didn't seem to be in fear or anger, simply just because she could. Mommy was playing her favorite game! Catch Sayuri! Playing with mommy and Kuro was always so fun!
The fox let out a series of happy squeaks and chirps until she slammed face first into someone's leg and toppled over with a yelp. Not far behind her, poor Junko was doubled over, hands on her knees to keep herself upright, and panting heavily for breath. Kuro was sitting at her feet with an orange bow identical to his sister's. "Sa..yu..Sayuri! Please!" Junko called after the minipet desperately, straightening up with a hand to her chest. Oh Jack she felt ready to diiiiiiie! "Come baaaaack," she whined, finally realizing just what poor fool the fox was yipping and yapping around in an excited dance.
"Oh.." Uhhhh...

Something smacked into the ghost's legs and he blinked down at the small purple fox as it yipped and yapped and danced around his feet. It was incredibly familiar, and for a minute the boil just stared down at her. Then he heard the whine, and with a sigh he reached down to scoop the pygmy fox up and tucked her under his arm, waiting for the ghoul to catch her breath and make her way over to collect her bet. "I think you lost something." It seemed as though Junko still hated exercise. He regarded her blankly, waiting for any old pangs to strike, but just that moment he felt nothing.

When picked up the fox's tail wagged happily and she tried to wriggle free if only so she could climb up Seiji's chest and lick his face. Hihihihihihihihi I've missed you hihihihihihihiiiiiiiiiiii! Kuro also took off to prance at Seiji's feet. Junko blinked and just watched them at first, only looking up when the ghost boil spoke. "Heh, yeah. We were out for a walk and usually we can do it with no leashes lately, but today she saw a moth and..well," she gestured to him as if to say that was how the story ended. Junko walked up, arms outstretched for the excited fox who was still trying to get at Seiji's face. "I know she's your favorite but I think I had better take her before she tries to lick your face raw," Junko teased with a little smile. She felt fine around Seiji, she could only hope things didn't end up as confusing and upsetting as their last meeting. She did still want to be his friend.

The eagerness with which the fox was attempting to great him made the ghost boil sigh, and he let her go enough for her to turn in his arms, tiny paws planted on his chest, and let her get a few licks on his chin before catching her again and holding her out to the ghoul. "Seems like it would be easier just to keep this one on a leash." Then he smirked. "Considering how much you hate to run." When his arms were free again he stuck his hands into his pockets. He was happy again. He had moved past the ghoul standing in front of him and the pain that had come from their split. Life was easy again. It still bothered him how quickly she'd moved on, but holding onto that anger wasn't healthy.

Sayuri whined when Seiji handed her back to Mommy, flailing her paws in his direction. Kuro sat calmly at the boil's feet, waiting like a good boil for attention unlike his hyperactive sister. Junko pouted at Seiji's advice. "A leash would ruin her pretty bow!" She protested, though she sighed at the comment on running. "It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't make me want to keel over and die, okay?" Junko quietly pet behind Sayuri's ears, cooing to the fox and calming her down until she stopped trying to leap at Seiji again. Every so often she would glance up at him and try to think of what to say next. He didn't look miserable, he looked okay, and for that she was glad. She did truly want the best for him. "Soooo how are things?" She asked with a genuinely warm smile, tilting her head to one side. "Anything new in the life of Seiji Inoue?"

The purple fox was given an indulgent smile before he bent and picked up the other one, tucking him under his arm and scratching under his furry little chin. He couldn't say he thought about the foxes often, but he still carried a fondness for them. Like, he was sure, his pets still carried for Junko. "You wouldn't want to keel over and die if you tried exercising more." Dark fingers smoothed between fluffy ears. "Things are going well. I'm about to take my exam for year 3." Grey lips tugged, and she flicked his eyes up to the ghoul's face. "Dating again."

Kuro chirped happily and, unlike his sister, remained pleasantly calm in Seiji's arms and closed his eyes, tilting his head up and letting the boil scratch under his chin. Junko was still pouting. "Gross, I'd rather skip the wanting to keel over and die part without wanting it at all. But..eh..I've won all my spars and stuff, the ones I needed to graduate," Junko explained with a little shrug. It was true. She'd won all of them.
She gasped with delight when Seiji said he was about to take his exam. "That's wonderful! I wish you the best of luck! Do you have any idea who will be doing it yet?" Junko asked excitedly, hugging Sayuri tightly. The hug got unconsciously tighter when Seiji said he was dating again. Oh? So soon? When had he started dating again? Had he gone to prom with anyone? She couldn't remember.
"Dating?" Junko asked after a moment of quiet composure. She cleared her throat, keeping her smile on her face, though her eyes widened slightly in that way she would do when just..trying to process something.
And not panic over it.
Or lose her mind.
Or when she just didn't want to believe something.
"Any lucky ghoul in particular?"

"All of them? That's impressive. I should probably get on that, I don't think I've got any under my belt yet." He paused to consider, then shook his head, resuming his idle petting of the pygmy fox in his arms. It was safe, and familiar, and it gave him something else to focus on. "And no, I don't know yet. I don't think I care. Anyone will do." He didn't really have any preference. He looked up as she echoed him, brows twitching upward slightly as her eyes got wider. It was probably petty, but he couldn't deny drawing a certain satisfaction from her reaction. It made him wonder if he should actually give her a name. It was clear she hadn't seen him at prom with his date. He wondered if it would hurt her know how little time it had taken him to find his way into someone else's arms. He wondered if he would ever tell her. "Yes, the ghoul I took to prom. You know her." He didn't immediately elaborate, and instead watched her face. She'd been handling their split so.. distantly in his eyes. So positive. Always talking about remaining friends, always walking around so happy. Was she really as happy as she appeared?

"Don't forget! You need ten! I asked though, some of our..uh...field trips can be used! So if you want to add how many trips you've been on to the list, that works. Sure did use as many as I could." Junko sighed.
The ghoul he took to prom? Whooo did he take to prom? She furrowed her brow and tried desperately to think back to it. Whenever Junko had seen Seiji he'd been performing on stage, she didn't know who he spent time with when he wasn't on stage.
She cleared her throat again, still smiling. "I know her? I don't think I recall seeing you with a date that night."

'Ten, huh? Shouldn't be that hard to get through." He was just going to have to best some of his friends.
The smile Junko was maintaining felt like a lie. He looked down at her, then down at the fox tucked under his arm. "You do, and I did." For some reason he didn't want to tell her, and he wasn't sure why.
But didn't he owe her a little honesty?
He scratched under Kuro's chin, stalling for a moment longer before looking up again. "Sarias." A year ago, if anyone would have asked him if he'd have ever considered a relationship with the banshee he would have said no way in hell, not after everything that she'd done. But.. A lot had happened in a year. He wasn't with Junko, the ghoul he'd always thought he'd spend the rest of his unlife with. He'd gotten to know Sarias, come to appreciate her strength, her confidence, and everything that made her uniquely her.

Sarias.
After. Everything. Sarias.
Sarias of all creeple.
Junko took a deep breath, slow, measured, and purposeful. She counted to ten, then twenty, and finally thirty, before letting it out. Sarias. Of course it was Sarias. Sarias always got what she <******** wanted didn't she? She wanted Seiji and in the ******** end she got him huh? Well. That was ******** could Junko say any of this? No. She couldn't say a damn thing. She had given up her claim on Seiji. Had she kind of hoped he would wait longer to rebound after the two years they had spent together? Well, yes. Would she have been happy for him? Of course! Seiji deserved all the happiness in the world. Her lips pressed into a very, very tight smile as she just took in the news and came up with a polite response.
"I'm. Very happy for you," she began, though her pleasantness was forced. "I hope that she is able to give you everything I could not. And. I hope.." Junko took a deep breath. Sayuri had come a security blanket for the moment. "I hope that you are happy." That was all Junko ever wanted, for Seiji to be happy. Even if it couldn't be with her..
...Sarias.
She rubbed her lips together, licking them before she finally clearing her throat and forcing that smile back on her face. "Are you hungry?" She squeaked. "I'm kind of hungry. Why don't. Um. Why don't get get lunch! I sure did work up an appetite chasing after Sayuri!"

The boil was very intent on the monster ghoul's face as the silence stretched on and the reality of the news he'd just delivered sank in fully. He watched her take that deep breath, watched her lips pressing into a thin line that was forced into what he was sure was supposed to be a smile. Glowing eyes casual, half lidded as he continued to pet the furry pet in his arms.
He waited for her to complain, to say something negative, to judge him, but she surprised him with her well wishes, forced at they were. It was almost flawless, the way she handled the news, almost. All except one unfortunate little slip that made his lips twitch, curling upward in a flicker of anger. There and gone in a blink.
I hope that she is able to give you everything that I could not.
That was unfair. He hadn't been left wanting. He'd been happy, content, ready to take things further. Ready to commit one hundred percent to the woman standing in front of her. It hadn't been him that walked away. It hadn't been him that had felt as if something was lacking. He wanted to spit that truth back into that pretty face. That face that he had loved. That he'd found beautiful, flawless, perfect.
Instead, he dropped his gaze, looking away from her, let her change the subject. "I'm always hungry." It was said as if that should have been obvious to someone that had practically lived with him for 2 years, but there was no malice to his tone, and whatever anger had flared was carefully held at bay.
He wasn't sure he wanted to have lunch with her, but he gave a jerk of his head towards the front gates as silent agreement to the invitation. "Lead on." There was a beat, then. "And thank you." He wasn't sure how sincere her well wishes were, but she'd still said them, and he'd seen how much of a struggle that had been.

Oh. He actually wanted to hang out with her...awesome. That actually was nice. Yes, they could do this. They could be friends. She could handle this, he could handle this. It'd be fine. They were okay. She could pretend if she had to.
Junko relaxed somewhat when Seiji said he was always hungry. "I know~. Come on, I know a place that serves things you like," she explained softly as she turned to lead Seiji to the gates. She paused a moment when he thanked her. Junko sagged slightly. She then looked over her shoulder at Seiji, giving him a more sincere smile. "You're welcome, I just want you to be happy." Something she didn't think she could give him the moment she started to have doubts about the two of them.
"Hel's helping me find a place to live once I'm done here. I think I've found a place! It's cute, it suits me. And it's close to town so I'll be able to work and everything still. And I have a loom now, so I'm able to make my own fabrics and patterns. It's pretty great." Junko sounded somewhat more cheerful as she explained what was new with her. Seiji hadn't asked, but she'd made him tell her what was new with him so she thought it only fair she return the favor. "I finally separated from my parents. Dropped my last name, stuff like that." She shrugged. He knew she'd been working on doing that anyway.
She walked quietly, petting Sayuri and nuzzling her face against the soft purple fur of the minipet's head. Something to say. Something to talk about. They used to do all kinds of fun things together. That didn't have to change, right? They could still hang out and do fun things and be friends? The only difference was they wouldn't stop to kiss, or hold hands, or tell each other they loved each other.
Gosh Sayuri your fur is soft.
They stopped in front of a restaurant, its menu boasted mostly sushi but also other various dishes that were very carnivore friendly. Or in this case it would be hungry ghost who eats meat and body parts and stuff friendly. "Here we are~! Uh..we'll have to eat outside since, well," she held up Sayuri and gestured to Kuro. "That okay with you? I thought about dropping them off but my room is kind of a mess right now."
Plus she read books, okay. She'd read those books Calder had given her a long time ago.
Bringing an ex to where you slept never ended well. She was not taking that risk.

The subtle flare of anger was fading under the weight of Junko's recent endeavors. He hadn't asked, but not for lack of being curious. Residual bitterness and separation didn't mean he no longer cared. Cared slightly less then he used to, yes, but her walking out of his life had not automatically removed all concerns or worries for her well being. For better or for worst. "I'm glad everything's falling into place for you," offered softly, scratching under Kuro's chin. "And that you finally managed to get away from your parents. I know how important that is for you." Cool eyes flicked up to the menu when they got close enough, and he took a moment to look it over before glancing down at the foxes and over towards the outdoor seating area. "It doesn't matter to me." It was a nice day out, mild weather. No reason not to enjoy the fresh air. He wasn't terribly enthused, though it was hard to expect him to get excited over having lunch with his Ex. He was, however, maintaining a general laid back air. It wasn't as bad as the last time they'd spent any significant amount of time together. Things weren't still raw now. He'd moved on, he was happy, he could look at her without his chest hurting.

Junko nodded when Seiji agreed to sitting outside. "I'll just go let them know we're out here~!" She chirped, hurrying inside while expecting Seiji to pick a table for them. When she returned outside with Sayuri still in her arms she still looked as cheerful as ever. She was determined not to let things get awkward, at least not on her end. There was no point in continuing on with regret and mourning. They had been together for two years, they knew each other so well, it wasn't like they couldn't not be friends. Junko saw nothing wrong with it. "They knew we're here~. They'll be here soon."
