How to play Please read carefully!

  • Choose one of your human characters; you will be roleplaying them as they follow animal tracks through the Wardwood. They don't have to be in the forest specifically to hunt—perhaps they're following the tracks out of curiosity, concern for an injured animal, or simply because they're lost. Any reason will do!
  • To play, post a brief RP response up to once per day (this can be as short as a sentence or two) along with a 1-100 RNG roll. The number you end up with will determine how many tracking points you receive and what happens to your character in the next round. Days reset at 5:00 AM EST (converter).
  • Similarly to the game chutes and ladders, each turn you take will have a chance of gaining you points or losing you points. Sometimes nothing will happen in your turn at all, and occasionally if you're lucky you may encounter a random surprise in the forest.
  • You may edit your post as needed, but deleting posts is against the rules and is grounds for immediate disqualification. If you roll more than once within the 24 hour period between the 5 AM EST reset, your extra post(s) will be crossed out and ignored.
  • Please do not post again if your previous post hasn't been quoted with a result yet. We will try to respond to posts as quickly as possible, but sometimes several hours will elapse without a response, particularly between the hours of 10:30 PM - 8:00 AM EST when Umbrology is hibernating.

Game prizes

  • The first person to reach 20 points wins the edited fox familiar or, if desired, their first pick of any of the other fox companions.
  • The following four people to reach 20 points win the remaining foxes, with winning order determining who has first pick.
  • If some of the foxes haven't been won by the end of the game at 5:00 AM EST November 1 they will go to the highest score holders.
  • Occasionally your character may randomly encounter a group of creepy rabbits or an injured kingshawk in the forest...
  • If you aren't interested in keeping one, if you've already won one, or if all the pets have been claimed, you will be given points instead.
  • Keep in mind that you aren't guaranteed to win something in this game—please try to have a good attitude if you end up empty-handed!

If you don't have any characters or simply don't feel like playing any of your existing ones, you're free to make up a temporary one to use for the duration of the game!

The air was crisp and the woods filled with an eerie quietness. The atmosphere fit her mood perfectly, and as Soibhan picked her way through the underbrush, she silently fumed at everything bad that had happened to her recently.

And it all started with that damn noble...

She hadn't thought to bring any liquor with her, but perhaps that was for the best. With her luck, her drunken a** would no doubt tumble down a hill into a river and drown in a foot of water.

Boy, Rajani would have a sure hoot with that.

A smile curved her lips just as something caught her eye. Footprints? Wee ones. A dog maybe? Curious, she began to follow them.

A broken twig lies in your path. Bending down to retrieve it, you notice that it has a faint spicy scent and the inside of the wood is green and pliable. Something has passed through here recently.

You win two points this turn.

McSweeney rides with Pontefract
and with that the world goes round.
Home from safari, things went awry
and no help came, nor peep or sound.
Fondly melded bent boots went on,
he took to the forest, eyes to ground.
With a jaunty tune and apple,
he took a wager to see what could be found.

Killian found himself on another safari of a much less exotic variety. Although sea monsters or pirates were no longer possibilities, the risks here were just as great. He found the damning tracks near where the grand old trees overlook his reading nook. It's as if the creature dared to go up to his window and looked in. Intrigued and in a good mood for adventure, he pressed on. Footsteps murdered the dry undergrowth.

There were many that chose to ride when they hunted, and Lucterius di Laurentius did, too: to a point. He disliked bringing horses into the woods; they were fine and fast creatures in the open fields, but large and cumbersome when trees crowded in his vision and he'd ventured off the path. He supposed that was what dogs and squires were for, but there was little joy in tracking prey that had been brought to him practically upon a platter, like so many other things. Besides, he wanted the story more than the prize: sweet Fiordelisia would be far happier to hear the tale than to see a little carcass, though she appreciated those, too.

So thus without a steed he treaded carefully, eyes all around him. A squire tailed him with caution, of course, but Lucterius paid him no mind - he was merely there to carry the compass, so that they would not be lost to the wolves on their way back. He liked stories, but he disliked the idea of lacking preparation. His daughter and Signe were waiting for him to return from this venture, after all.

You turn a corner to find a man standing with his back to you on the path you're walking or riding. He's wearing an expensive-looking dark blue jacket, his hair is auburn and a touch curly, and when he turns around there's a single spot of blood on his spotless but slightly rumpled cravat. His eyes are an unnatural shade of purple. If you have ever met him before you will recognize him as the spirit named Llyr.

"Good evening," he says to you politely, and then points toward a copse of yellow ashes in the distance. "You may find that direction somewhat more fruitful."

When you look back, he is gone.

You win two points this turn.

Margaret knelt at the edge of the Wardwood, leaving her customary offering of milk and a bit of honey at the roots of a spreading young oak. Pausing to flick her braid back over her shoulder as she stood, she squared her shoulders and breathed a near-silent prayer to the spirits, only for welcome and to pass unmolested through these sacred trees.

Her blessing completed, the healer hefted her empty herb-basket and stumped off into the trees.

Sebastian tilted his head back. Autumn winds swirled around him. He wasn't terribly fond of fox hunts, they paled in comparison to whale hunting, treasure hunting, and lass hunting. But he'd felt a sudden pang for the woods and he suspected that it had something to do with Silje who seemed to be growing tired of the sea winds. Not that he could fault her really. And never let it be said that Sebastian was not a kind and caring man. Because he was. That was why he was here and not out at sea. As if sensing his thoughts, Silje brushed her nose against his cheek apologetically.

The forest is quiet; by now most of the birds have migrated south, and the only sounds you've heard for the past several minutes are the rustling of the breeze in the trees, the plop of acorns falling, the quiet scraping rustle as a leaf descends to the forest floor, and the occasional rasp of a squirrel gnawing on a nut's shell in the distance. It is peaceful — or, depending on your character's preferences, a little eerie.

The shrill, almost-human scream of a rabbit's death cry shatters the silence. Once you've taken a moment to recover (or, if you're a badass mofo, coolly evaluate the situation) you head in the scream's direction. It could be the work of a hawk, but there's still a good chance a fox is nearby.

You win three points this turn.

You have reached a creek. Its narrow length is lined with rocks and moss, and bright autumn leaves meander downstream, turning languidly in the current. As you draw nearer you notice faint markings in the mud between two rocks: fox prints, almost entirely worn away by time. They aren't recent, but knowing the animal's preferred path is still somewhat useful.

You win one point this turn.

Conri was dressed in fine fabrics, but they were not so lush as a nobleman's. A family of scholars with good connections allowed him the luxury of doing as he wished and an ancestry deeply entrenched in the Old Ways meant that none who knew him would think it strange that he was walking amongst the Wardwood. This was his family's home after all, the wolf-stones his kin. He blinked, already narrow eyes staring shrewdly out at the lay of the land before him, the small differences in the underbrush that grew between the trees. Brushing stray hairs away from his face, he walked on, looking for clues to his quarry.

Amorpheous

You hear a frantic rattling sound accompanied by a stream of musical but panicked warbling. When you investigate the noise, you find a bright blue and white fairy wren struggling inside a bramble-bush; one of its wings is caught on a thorn. You manage to free it and it flutters away, lands on a bare, gnarled branch, fluffs up all its feathers, and begins preening. You feel strangely lucky afterwards.

You win two points this turn.
