It was two in the morning and he had a hankering for some caffeine, naturally. Sleep was for the weak.
Jack had been pouring over old notes for the past few days, mostly to avoid having to do work like titans and beach combing, which ended up being more of an annoyance than it ought to have been. Yesterday he had spent the majority of his time underwater fighting off man-hungry mermaids (and not in the way he normally liked his man-hungry women), and the battle had been long and tiring; Jack still felt his body sore in a few places he wished he wasn't. There was also the whole Lina shitstorm, but he tried not to think about it.
So, he decided, he was due for some hot coffee to lift his spirits.
With machines mostly down still and those that were powered hoarded away or mysteriously missing, he was left with one option: gas stoves. Thankfully there was one in the common room of the dorms, and so, a packet of grinds in hand, he began to make himself some.
(( Coffee is what exactly? ))
The best damn drink in the world is what.
Pot filled with water, Jack scrounged for a match, or some sort of starter, to kickstart the stove, and hopefully the rest of what was supposed to be a productive couple of hours.

Kat being the night owl she was, had been jumping at the chances for night duties. Having just recently woken up, the Sun hunter thought to start her shift off with a fresh cup of coffee. Sadly, she was reduced to instant coffee until the machines were up and running again, though even that wasn't much of a step up from Deus coffee. Luckily for Kat though, she had adapted to practically any kind of coffee by now.
Pushing her way into the cafeteria, the sun hunter wiped the sleep from her eye, followed by a large yawn which she covered with the back of her hand. It wasn't at all surprising to find other hunters in here at this hour. Not with Deus being active twenty-four hours a day, so she wasn't at all surprised to run into familiar hunters as well.
Shuffling up behind Jack, she tapped the large green haired male on his shoulder to get his attention. "If you're making one, would you mind putting in enough for two?" She could always wait until he was done and make her own, but that would mean waiting, and that was something she was never good at.

"Yeah, if you've got a match or something to start a fire," he answered absentmindedly, having had no luck thus far. Then Jack recognized the voice a second later, and he paused in his search to turn around. "Ah . . . Kat, right?" He grinned. "Long time no shoot you out of a cannon at a rampaging titan~ Back for a second date?"

At the mention of matches, Kat reached for her pouch, even though she knew the answer. "Uhh.. I don't think.. I do..." Why? Why did she never have a match when she needed one? Surely someone here had one? Bloody hell..
Blinking, she gave the taller boy a lazy smile. "Oh, um, Jack?" She did get that name right, right? She was not always the best with remembering people's names.
"Hah, that all depends on if I can manage to even stay awake without that coffee." She teased, rubbing at her eyes. "Think there is any matches lying around here?"

"Hell if I know." He raised his shoulders in a helpless gesture. "I've been searching for a while now. You'd think with the shortage of cigarettes that there'd be more available matches, but . . . I guess, like other commodities, they've been hoarded."
Or thrown on the beach; odd things turned up there apparently.
Jack ran a hand through his hair and surveyed her for a moment. "You've been here longer, right? Know who might have one we can use? Or just anything: a firestarter, God damn I'd take flint at this point." He needed the coffee.

"Damn.." Why wasn't there a box of matches here in the first place? "Maybe, but a lot of people prefer lighters to matches." Though if people were hoarding the matches, she might have to hunt them down later.
"To be honest, I have no idea. Since I've been here, I don't think there has been a power outage. At least not that I can recall this moment. But I've never had to resort to using this method for coffee before the power outage. There has to be some here somewhere." With that said, the sun hunter started off into the back room to start checking for supplies. Luckily for her, her glowsticks gave off an excellent light source.

So, not only did he have the luck to come at a time when Deus decided to have its first power outage in ages, but someone of a higher rank didn't provide him with the answer he wanted.
And then his non-caffeinated, addled brain remembered something: some MREs came with a waterproof matchbox. Jack snapped his fingers at the revelation. "Think they still have food available at this time?" he called to Kat, remembering vaguely that most people didn't eat past 1 a.m. "Some provide matches in the accessory pack."

Kat was already far off in the back, searching through the shelves of items, in hopes of coming across a small supply of matches, with not much luck so far.
"Sure, why not? With Deus running all the time, I'm sure people come at all hours to get a bite to eat. Personally, I just come for the coffee, but If we don't find some matches, I doubt that will be an option today." Stopping to stare at Jack, Kat rubbed the back of her head. "Really? They do?"

"Yeah. Part of the ready to eat bit of MREs is that they require water and heat, and you aren't going to have microwaves all the time." He gestured for her to follow and headed towards the cafeteria.
"So! Anything been up with you since our last date, Kit Kat? I'm hoping you haven't had other men blowing you away in the meantime."

Still poking through various shelved boxes in hopes of finding anything of use for their coffee needs, Kat nodded at his words. "True that." Following him back out to the cafeteria, the Sun hunter rubbed at the back of her head. Giving the room another quick look over, her attention shifted back to the Life hunter.
"Hm? What?" Was that nickname catching on? Jack was at least the second hunter to call her by that name. "Hah, no. Nothing happening aside from the few shenanigans I get up to. How about you? You been up to anything recently? Making friends?" A small grin stretched across her lips as she took a seat on the closest stool.

"Shenanigans being what new threat they throw the Suns at, hmm? What new dangers lurk out there to make me tear my hair out?" He didn't know much about it, but from what he could glean from Chel, it sounded like mostly field training.
Perusing the shelves, Jack snatched up an MRE that read something about beef slices and a small casserole being the main course. "Me? Ah, I'm always up to something," Jack replied cryptically as he tore it open and stole the match. "Neverending stream of information and sources if you know where to look. Considering the craziness happening lately, knowledge really is the only true power to hold. Life Division consolidating and applying information and all that. Not that I'm allowed access to much as a trainee . . Frustrating, that." Friends, though? Eh . . . he supposed there was some truth in that.
"How do you like your coffee? I've only found dark roast around, but you can try your hand at finding something else."

"Umm, more like what trouble I can cause to the Death assistant." She smiled, not ashamed in the least for her actions. After all, Mark really had it coming sometimes. "But yeah, they do like to keep us Suns on our toes." Not that she minded of course. It was good for someone as hyperactive as her to keep busy. Especially when she got to hit things. "Oh, I'm sure you'll find plenty that will make you want to tear your hair out. I know I've found a few."
Remaining perched on the stool, Kat watched as she rested her face in between her hands. "Yeah, I bet you Life hunters must be having a field day with everything that's happening lately." No doubt, data must be off the charts. "Ugh.. Yeah. That can be frustrating. Though, I'm sure there are ways to gather your own data and what not. Hell, I'm sure the Haunted House is full of it. That place is seriously weird." What with its never ending changing rooms, the whole Fear issue, and everything else that went on in there.
Hearing the word coffee, she perked up. "Oh, that's fine! Once you adjust to Deus cafeteria coffee, you can pretty much get used to drinking any kind of coffee." Sitting upright, the Sun hunter stretched her limbs. "Just milk and sugar is good, thanks."

Jack gave her a half smile. "Someone bothering you? I'm always happy to make a few extra enemies."
Death assistant, that was ah . . . Mark, he remembered. Sounded about right as far as the tormented type. "Dark roast it is," he said rather happily as he set the match and MRE aside to fill a pot with water. "If I'm being honest, I haven't visited the Haunted House yet. Never had a reason to since most of my shifts involve more important grunt work. Like minipets," he explained dryly. "I haven't heard much about it, though, only that it's a hot spot to meet Halloween denizens or something to that effect?" Turning the gas on, he struck the match and started the fire, blowing it out as he set the pot atop the stove.

Snorting, Kat shook her head and rested her chin upon the back of her hand. "Nah. Mark is practically harmless. He's been trying to 'exercise' me for over a year now. He believes I'm possessed. Who knows. Maybe I am." She joked, her grin only growing wider as she watched Jack prep the stove.
Sitting upright again, she stared at him a moment. "Really? Not even once?" Wow she had lost count of how many times she had been to the haunted house. But then again, he was still new, so it wasn't all that surprising he hadn't been there yet. Listening, she nodded now and then, tapping her heel against the stool leg. "Yeah. There is almost always some Halloween denizen there. But its also one of the horsemen's favorite haunt as well."

He snorted as he pinched the embers off the match and tossed it in the trash. "I've seen a woman possessed before--I can handle you just fine," he said with a little smirk. "But no, not once. Soon, though. In the meantime, have any stories you wish to tell me for our little coffee date?" After all, the best way to prepare oneself for a new environment was to gather as much information as possible prior to visitation.
