Mariposite had waited been looking for her for quite a while, and just hadn’t had any luck at all. Tonight though. Tonight he was sure that he was going to find her. He had to find her.

This game of cat and mouse had grown very tiring indeed and he just wanted to warn Medea and get out of there, to be honest. Get out and never come back…though that would really be something that would be harder than it looked. Or sounded. Whichever came first, to be honest.

The Captain was prowling out again, near to the spots that he had seen her the last two times. He wanted to see her. And maybe kiss her.

And talk. He just wanted to talk, seriously. He had kept his weapon far away in the strange subspace that he had, there wasn’t any sign that he wanted to fight or anything…save for maybe his grumpy face. That could perhaps instigate some sort of confrontation…but that’s not what he wanted!

He just wanted to talk, damnit! Now where was she?

There she was! Leaning against the streetlight, about to power down for the evening. Then, the weight of a Chaos signature. She sighed. "Friend or foe...show yourself...blah blah..." She smirked. Ever since that altercation in the forest, she became so...

Hapless.

Well, not hapless, but hopeless, maybe. She didn't see a way out of the war, and it left her exhausted and sad and grim.

Morbid, even. She expected death now. It became part of duty. She expected it as much as she expected waking up or sunrise, and that, she thought, seemed extremely sad.

"I haven't all day!"

She ran a hand through her hair. She trembled.

It happened at once. Mariposite felt the order signature, and heard her voice. He swallowed and moved towards the sound and the feeling.

Moved towards her. A slow smile began to spread across his face as his eyes fell on her, still as beautiful as before. Still as lovely.

He quickened his pace. “Medea. It’s been a while. I’ve been wanting to see you again. I have a lot to say to you.” A lot indeed. Though, perhaps he shouldn’t be walking quite so quickly, or smiling like that. What if she thought he was coming to get her. Which was a completely rational thing to think.

It was too late to slow down now, the captain was almost upon her. “I’m not here to hurt you…” The words were spoken as a complete afterthought.

"HOMG." Medea made a fist. She huffed. Her heart raced. Mariposite would kill her. He would rip out her starseed and eat it. She ate a starseed once. She knew. "GO AWAY." She backed away, but no use! He moved so quickly. If she enchanted, she could get away. Maybe, but she backed too far from the streetlamp.

No.

She shook. No promises of peace could sway her like this, and even if she tackled him once, she knew that it was luck. Luck or he simply didn't care. She doubted she could bring him down again. Especially not with a broken arm. Her fist loosened. She cradled her cast.

"Here to finish the job?"

Mariposite shook his head quickly. “No. No I’m not here to finish the job. I’m here to apologize to you.” He stopped advancing and looked sad for a moment. “Medea, I am very sorry.” He didn’t know what else to say. There was nothing more to say. He was sorry, that was that. She could either forgive him or not.

But one thing was for sure.

She would never believe him if she couldn’t even trust him near her. Why would she believe that Buddingtonite was out to corrupt her…when she thought it was coming from the mouth of someone who wanted to kill her.

Well. Didn’t he cause a mess now. Great going Maripo. You are such a failure. “Medea…I’m sorry. I really, truly am. If you don’t want to listen, fine. Then I’ll go. But please.” He held out a hand, his eyes searching for hers in the semi darkness, begging for some hint of forgiveness.

She frowned. She couldn't break away from his gaze. He sounded sorry... "I guess you ran into Buddy." That was the only conclusion she could reach. Buddy made him sorry, and that was acceptable because she trusted the redhead to strike fear and regret into the hearts of those who crossed her. She exhaled. Her shoulders slumped. "Is that why you're so sorry, Captain?"

She feared that he would lash out. She still remembered how he left her on that rooftop, weapon in hand, or how she believed he liked her liked her and then brought her to the concrete.

"I guess--" He looked so upset. Purple eyes...Lovely eyes. She watched her feet "--What happened?"

People didn't just drop their values.

Buddy. Mariposite almost snarled. Almost jumped right into what he wanted to say. Almost went off on the other Captain. But he couldn’t. Not yet. Not when she wouldn’t believe him. He wanted to help her, and he couldn’t do that if she didn’t…if she still thought he was here to hurt her.

Maybe the truth would world. Maybe.

“Yes. I was pulled into a meeting with Buddingtonite, if that’s who you mean by Buddy. To be honest, I thought I was going to get a reprimand for being too weak to finish the job.” He looked at her, then finally looked away. “I couldn’t hurt you. I don’t even know why I tried to. I was just…overwhelmed by…by I don’t even know what. Chaos, maybe. I was told that it can change you. Turn you into something nasty…Something that isn’t…you.”

He swallowed and glanced up at the sky. “It’s turning me into something that isn’t me, Medea. And I think I’m losing the battle against it. It…it’s a part of me. And honestly, that thought scares me. Scares me more than I care to admit right now.”

He looked back towards her. “I need help, I think. And you’re the only white moon senshi that doesn’t…think I’m a complete creep or a pervert, and I know I messed up when I tried to hurt you…but I can’t. I don’t want to be that much of a ******** to you. I want to be someone you can count on and someone you can trust.” Mariposite took a step towards her, holding out a hand. “Please.”

"Captain--"

This reminded her of when they met and she stepped forward and looked him in the eye and took his hand firmly. She wanted to believe him. Somehow. To know he would protect her. "--I want to trust you." If he planned to kill her now, at least she could blame herself. Blame herself for approaching. For opening up. This would be her fault, and not his, and that was fair because she didn't want to burden him. Even after all the hurt, she didn't want him to suffer.

It felt pretty strange, and she wanted to cry and let him fade away with the rest of Senshi life, but this was her duty, and he only wanted to talk. He was...losing a battle against himself, it seemed. Against Chaos, he said, but she wasn't sure it could take over minds like that, and if it did, then she feared for Buddy and Natron and the others.

"What's going on, Marpiosite?"

She took his hand. He felt a warmth pulse through him and on impulse he pulled her close, hugging her tightly. He wanted to just tell her. Warn her, promise to protect her.

He just wanted…her to be safe. Her to stay how she was. Her to be the same wonderful Medea that she was now. “I’m afraid. For me. And for you. I’m afraid that chaos will go after you. And I’m afraid that it’ll work its way into you like it has in me. I don’t want you to be lost.”

Should he say it? Should he tell her? Warn her?

It just didn’t…feel like the right time. What if she still thought this was some sort of a trick or ruse or…or just him being a big fat bully.

Maybe he should have made her a cake. Maybe that would have helped…

She closed her eyes and leaned against him. This felt...safe. Warm. She wrapped her arms around him, hanging on as if he anchored her to the earth. He almost made the pain disappear. Almost. "I'm not going anywhere." A dog barked. "There's no reason to fear chaos will work its way in. I'm a Senshi after all." She smiled. Faintly, but then she nuzzled in to hide it. No way he could see that. No way she would let him think he won, though she couldn't deny the embrace felt good, as in pure, morally good. The kind of good that pushed her out of bed and into the streets--the good she protected by powering up.

And giving it was...Mariposite? Strange. An hour earlier she hated him, and now she practically melted into his arms, and she didn't know how or why except that he seemed to care, and really, that's what she needed. Tears welled in her eyes. She buried deeper into him, hoping he wouldn't see.

"Besides, it's not like there's anywhere else to go." She laughed to hide the sob. "We have to fulfill our duties. There's no other choice."

Except there was, she just couldn't wrap her mind around Natron's words just then...

He relaxed when she moved closer, feeling at peace for the first time since he hurt her. Mariposite gave a happy little sigh and kissed the top of her head, burrowing his face slightly in her hair. “Oh Medea…I hope not. I couldn’t bear to think of you with us. I don’t want that fate to befall you…I would die to protect you, I’m not even kidding…I…” He swallowed. “Please just be careful. And when you feel cornered…don’t choose chaos. It’s not worth it.”

The captain spoke softly, one hand gently rubbing her back. “I want to leave it. I want to leave the negaverse. I don’t like what I could become. And I was warned that it will only get worse as the chaos really takes hold…I went after you for no reason, and I can’t figure out why I did it even now, though I’ve spent hours and hours wondering…I just…Medea…”

He hugged her tighter, sighing. “When I leave…you can always come to me. I will always fight for you. I will always be there for you…”

Why was he making such promises for this girl? What did it even matter? She was just one senshi. One poor senshi that one cunning and very charismatic agent had set his sights on…and he wanted to help. He wanted to help the senshi.

But why? Because they were sexy? Was that going to be his excuse for everything? It wasn’t a bad one, just…not a strong one. He needed a stronger reason.

Maybe he’d get one, someday. Maybe.

She snorted. "You're very silly Mariposite." The rubbing and kissing brought her deeper into his arms, and she felt pathetic, but then, she needed this. She needed it because Thraen seemed distant and Thetis couldn't save her, and Mariposite wrapped his arms around her and kissed her hair and burrowed and sighed, and warmth begot warmth, and her heart fluttered. "No one's coming after me." A somewhat lie. Technically Natron offered to bring her over, but he could have meant it in jest. "And it's not like there's any reason to leave the Court." False, again, for she liked Buddy very much, but still, she didn't want to upset Mariposite. They could discuss her...predicament...once he calmed down.

She wondered why he stayed with Chaos if he urged her against it, but then remembered that the Generals held more power than she realized. It wasn't as though they had a choice. At least Senshi were free to act without punishment.

"Thank you, Captain." He wouldn't hurt her, she felt pretty sure. Another agent she could trust. "It means a lot to me. I'm just...worried. I guess. You know. It's scary." She smiled. "You're brave, though, for sticking your neck out for me." She hoped he wouldn't die in the process.

She felt like the moth approaching a flame, growing closer and closer to him, afraid of being burned.

Was this really a good way?

“Maripo. Please just call me Maripo.” He sighed. “I’m going to find a way to stop being a captain. So please…stop calling me that too. I’m going to come to your side. I was talking to a guy named Camelot, and he said I’d become a knight like him…so hey. Why not. Then I can really be your knight in shining armor and I’ll slay all of the dragons that are trying to hurt my beautiful Medea…”

He pulled away from her just slightly and placed a gentle kiss on her nose, looking at her face. “I’ll be with you one day, Medea. Just wait for me, okay? Don’t…don’t let Buddingtonite bring you to chaos. He told me…he told me that’s what he wants…he got angry because I almost killed you…because he wants to turn you…and Medea…that thought makes me sick. And it scares me to no end…”

Mariposite shook his head, feeling just a bit sick again as he thought about her being corrupted. The chaos invading her body…It just wasn’t right.

“You belong in white, my little darling. Not black. Never black for you.”

"Maripo!" She snickered. "That's cute, and thank you, my knight." She smiled hugely when he kissed her nose. Sweet and innocent and kind. A comfort kiss. She couldn't hide now, and maybe she didn't want to. Maybe...it was better like this. A reformed assailant swearing to protect her. This was consistent. This was pure. This was good. "You're very kind to me. It's...lovely."

And then her heart turned to ice.

She frowned. How could he...? Buddy wouldn't hurt her. Her eyes stung with tears, as if her mind said, "Of course" but her heart said, "No way", and they fought so savagely, there was nothing to do but cry. The smile remained. "That's...not right. I don't think he'd change me." She wiped her eyes. She didn't even understand these tears. She didn't feel sad. This wouldn't be news. She didn't even believe him. Not entirely. "He seems to like me!" She flung herself against him, shaking. She could cry into him for a moment, then she would pull away and apologize. "We don't change the people we like, right, Maripo? You wouldn't."

She shook her head. Nope. No way. She could trust them not to hurt her. The idea that Buddy would betray her...

Unbelievable.

Right?

Crap. Crap now she was crying. He hugged her closer, stroking her hair. Damn. Why didn’t he just keep his big mouth shut. “I would never change you, Medea. I want to change for you. I want to be better for you. You deserve someone by your side who will stay there…and if you’ll let me, I want to fill that role. Please.”

He sighed. “I didn’t mean to upset you…I just want…you to be safe. You are important to me. Medea…”

Why did he even have to come out tonight? Why didn’t he just leave well enough alone? If she went and told Buddingtonite…

His blood ran cold. He could be in for a lot worse than what happened previously. If she went and ratted him out again.

He very well could be killed for all of this.
