"Did you bring in the canvases? I don't want the heat to ruin them."
"Yes, Mother."
"Have you seen my needles? I thought I left them in the front room..."
"They're on the porch, Talbot."
"I can't find my vest anywhere! It's the new line and I just..I just can't..."
"Calm down, Morgan, you took it into town yesterday."
"Oh...oh you're right..."
Devereux walked through the family cottage with a wide smile, his arms laden with various artistic accouterments. It was just another day in the neighborhood, it seemed. Today was the first full day he'd been home since his latest hunting expedition, and since it had lasted nearly half a year it seemed his family was making up for lost time in piling on the chores.
Other taurs would have moved on by his age, started a home of their own, but he didn't see the need. At first it had been the role of the oldest son; prepping, hunting, doing what he could to help keep the artists from starving, then it was to take care of Talbot in his illness and now...well, he couldn't really think of going anywhere else.
His oddly rhythmic walk carried the large centaur across the threshold and out into the world. He took a deep breath, set the bustle of paints, empty canvas sheets and brushes in the holster near the front door. When he turned around he nearly ran into his mother.

"Sorry," she giggled, leaning forward to place a kiss on his nose. Even as massive as he was, she was still close enough not to jump up. "Didn't know you were out here. Have you seen your father? We're expecting company, and I want to get ready."
"Not since this morning, and maybe you should let me hold that, and that, and that-" He worked as he spoke, taking heavier jars and sharper carving knives from her already overworked arms. "How you get by without me around, I'll never know." Devereux grinned.
Jynx laughed, and playfully slapped his arm. "You've got brothers, you know, and a father."
"But do they wait on you hand and foot, mi'lady?" His grin broadened.
"No, not like you do." Leaning in to give him another hug, she moved about to her storage shelves, and started to organize.

Zara was literally bouncing on her hooves as she traveled up from the worn path towards her family home. Brushes and canvas peeped out from the many satchels which hung on her sides, but she didn’t care as she twirled around a corner. Her brother was supposed to be home from a hunting expedition so she had even closed her stall in the market to come home earlier than usual, “You going to make it Shamira?” She questioned lightly with a teasing grin. It wasn’t just seeing her brother that was making her so energetic, but rather the presence of the quiet centauress behind her whose cheeks darkened immediately at the question.
“Y-yes! Why wouldn’t I?” Head tilting down Shamira kept her gaze on the ground though she nearly stumbled and dropped the basket that she had been carrying in her arms. Still her cheeks stayed warm as she tried her best to ignore the fact that her stomach was tossing with butterflies. Each hoof step slowed down just a tad bit more as her bright friend danced along ahead of her.
Laughing Zara just looked back once more towards her friend before shaking her head, “You’ll live! I swear it’s like you live under a rock, but I know better~ Excited to see him again?” Even though her voice was light, the artist had remembered the trials that had occurred for Shamira to even come into her life. It was also there in the desert that her friend had first seen her brother…and still even now felt bad about what had happened then.
She, however, was going to try to deny worrying as much as possible. “Who?” Shamira quickly looked away from the artist, “I’m here to help you with making paints and because you kept bothering me to visit! I have no other reasons…I…I don’t even know your family well at all.” Her ears pressed down against her head, “Except Kale cause he helped me to come this way…after everything.” She regretted even thinking to ask Zara about how her brother was doing lately. Hearing he had been gone had obviously made the centauress’s smile disappear for a moment, but once Zara had mentioned he was back then the smile and interest had definitely fueled her best friend’s imagination. Now here she was being dragged along into the spirits only knew what…
Beaming Zara just laughed once more before waving Shamira on, “There’s our house!” Giggling she rushed down the path. Deveroux was back! Admittedly maybe she did miss him just a bit…just a wee bit though, nothing more. At least that was as far as she would admit.

"If you're done with me, I need to go back in to check on the bread. I'm not sure how long I was supposed to-"
Jynx waved her son off with a smile. "Talbot's on it, sweet heart. I told him to keep an eye on things so you could help me tidy up a bit out here. I have a feeling you'll be VERY excited to see our visitor." Waggling her eyebrows, the centauress bounced away from a playful punch and came back in to give her boy a quick hug. "I'm serious, though. Best behavior. Big smiles. Like you mean it."
"Have I ever not be on my best behavior? I'm not Zara." Devereux teased, lugging a large oak bench over his shoulder and out into the yard, completely ignoring his mother's offer for assistance. Big brute like him didn't need it, but what he did need was some more sod to help cover up the spot in the ground where the water had taken to standing. Now, if he got on that soon, maybe he could...
With his back turned to the road Devereux stood, the muscles in his back rippling with a thin sheen of sweat as he pondered the predicament.

Shamira just stumbled to a halt in the road as Devereux appeared. Face immediately flushing she had to grab the basket that she nearly threw in surprise at the sight. What was he doing just standing there like that?! She lost words and instead just squeaked in surprise. While she stood frozen in shock at finally seeing the centaur again Zara was bouncing up the road with a mission in mind.
“Surprise!” Not caring about how sweaty he may have been the centauress jumped up and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, “You come back and are immediately in the way again?” Laughing she peered back down the road towards Shamira who was shyly looking away from the scene, “Hey look, Shamira! I caught a road block!” Her gaze gleamed happily, “What should we do with it?”
“I…I dunno.” Shamira felt like she could just die on the spot. Sure she had been expecting Devereux to be here, but she still wasn’t ready! All she could do was try to focus on the present and not remember the desert and first meeting him and then what had happened…her gaze still went down towards his legs before shyly raising up again, “I’m just going to go ahead and drop off these …” Speaking softly she made to bolt past Zara with the basket dangling on her arm, but was caught by the other centauress.
Taking a step back so that she could let go of Devereux and instead latch onto Shamira Zara beamed, “Oh don’t run away. It’s just my brother.” Zara grinned wickedly, “Dev, this is Shamira…you probably remember her though. She’s been helping me with my shop in the market and today we’re supposed to be making paint and I convinced her to stay for a while! Maybe even for a night if she’s smart~”
“Zara!”
“Well obviously it’ll be dark soon is all.” Zara shrugged innocently before letting go of her friend to tap her brother’s arm, “So what type of mess are you working on now?”

Devereux almost dropped the bench he was carrying in surprise. Luckily he kept a solid hold on it while surprise turned to delight. "Zara!" His eyes were bright and warm, ready to gather her up in a half hug with his free arm. He squeezed her tight, only pulling back to give her a confused look. "In the way? By standing in my own yard? If I'm correct you're the own whose been dallying all day, and I've been playing mover." He teased, openly grinning.
He wasn't really sure what to think of Zara's assumption of a road block, as he was standing in grass, but maybe she meant something else? Females. And speaking of the fairer sex, he caught a glimpse of a familiar face trying to shy away from him.
Devereux set the bench down slowly, pressing it up against the porch before turning back to Shamira. His steps were ginger, and precise to make up for the obvious limp. He would have to go back in for his staff soon, but for now he was close enough to the porch that he could lean. Not that he didn't catch her looking at his legs. His cheeks flushed, his own eyes looking everywhere but the centauress for a moment. Oh yeah, any thought that she might have forgotten about that was out the window.
"I won't bite, I promise." Devereux smiled, his features soft and inviting. "It's nice to see you again, Shamira. I'm glad to know that you've been doing well. You know, despite having to spend so much time with my sister and all." He brushed his hands off on his hide. "Oh, you should definitely stay. The woods aren't safe at night for anyone, let alone a lone taur." What if something came out and got her! Or someone.
Standing tall, he motioned around the newly renovated porch/paint station. "Between Morgan, Talbot and Mom, I've been playing errand boy. I can't wait for Kaye to show up so I can toss this all on him." He laughed.

“Mmmhmm.” Zara just placed her hands on her hips playfully though the stern look quickly faded away into a grin, “I’ll have you know I’m a hard worker too! I just…happen to sell things instead of doing stuff like that.” She pouted looking away sheepishly. She really didn’t have much strength like her brother and the centauress was always envious of it. Selling things in market was just what she could do. She had her fill of adventure already…her gaze dropped at the memories…and that was plenty enough.
Shamira’s face felt like it was on fire. The flush spread as she realized she had been caught looking and if it wasn’t for Zara holding onto her the centauress would have already tried bolting to a safe quiet place. This was so horrible…she was so happy to see him…but here she was just making a mess of it! Yet he was so nice to her. She found herself smiling back at him, “It’s – It’s nice to see you again as well.” She whispered softly before finding his comment about Zara, “Oh yes!” She laughed quietly, “But she’s really more of a help, I would be lost without her.”
“Ahah.” Zara nearly stuck her tongue out at Devereux. Shamira had her back on the teasing! Then again the centauress was too kind to really pick at others. The thought made Zara just lightly shake her head before glancing back at her friend. She really hoped Shamira didn’t pass out on her from this.
“But – I don’t want to be a bother to your family…” Trailing off at the look Zara gave her Shamira finally just nodded, “If it’s not a bother then, I suppose I should.” She swallowed lightly before looking away from Devereux in an attempt to calm her racing heart.
“Well come on then. Let’s get to the house.” Tugging at both of their arms Zara laughed playfully before walking on ahead with Shamira following slowly behind her.

Devereux couldn't help, but to reach over and ruffle his sister's hair. "I'm just playing, Zara, you know that." He smiled calmly. There wasn't much he could do for his family besides being the hunter, and in truth, he would much rather be doing Zara's job; at least he would feel as if he could blend in with the painters, sculptors and the rest.
Lord, how that girl flushed! She seemed as nervous as a little doe caught in one of his snares, and for the life of him Devereux couldn't figure out why. They were friends, right? And it wasn't like this was the first time they had met, so why was she acting so...so odd.
"It's not a bother at all. It's been a while since I've been home, so I'm bound to cook a lot, just to keep my skills sharp, so we're sure to have extras. If anything, you're doing us a favor," He winked at Zara, helping in any way he knew to get what she wanted, which he thought was just to have her friend over.
Devereux stepped up as easily as he could, finding steps easier to walk on with his gimp than flat ground. When they made it up onto the porch, he opened the door and held it for the ladies.
