Brann's father was a soldier, who had a flighty affair with his mother, a hedgewitch. His mother was young, barely a woman, and when his father found out she was with child, he fled town, never to be heard from again. Rather than attempt to abort or abandon the child, his mother, living and struggling on her own, birthed and raised Brann as any loving mother would. Things were slow and difficult at first; his mother had no interest in relying on a man, so she provided for herself and her son alone. As a hedgewitch, she harbored healing abilities, and all her life, had an affinity for plants. So, working out of their home on the outskirts of Oldcastle, his mother provided what services she could; she sold herbal concoctions, and was also occasionally known to tend to the ill.
From a young age, his mother attempted to teach Brann about her trade, in hopes of taking him as an apprentice, and passing her legacy on. But Brann never took an interest; he had a difficult time in believing in 'magic' and viewed apothecary work as out of his league. He was born for better things; he wanted to be a soldier, and seek his father out. He was consumed with curiosity, with a deep seeded yearning to know who the man was, and why he had left. So he paid his mother little mind, despite her frequent attempts to reach out to him.
Of course, this all changed once his mother fell ill, and died. Brann was seventeen, and although nothing could have been done to save her, Brann blamed himself, and continues to. He feels as though the Gods are punishing him; he believes he was supposed to follow the ways of his mother, and because he ignored the path, the Gods sent a message in the form of taking his mother from him. A ridiculous notion to some, but for Brann, it was a spiritual moment, an awakening of sorts. The day after his mother died, he was chosen, a fact that only strengthened Brann's superstition.
For a time, Brann poured over his mother's notes, teaching himself. He didn't have his mother's talent, but nonetheless, was determined to follow in his mother's footsteps. He worked out of his mother's house for a time, and when he could, moved, and opened his own shop in town. He couldn't stand to live in the house his mother had drawn her last breath in. But he kept her notes, her equipment, her trinkets. Slowly, he's moving on, but still blames himself as strongly as he did the first day. He's vowed never to lose someone dear to him, not when he can now prevent it. And while he has tried to forget his father, sometimes, he still finds himself wondering...
