Dubhan's bedroom and office have been renovated since taking over the position of headmaster. He has reluctantly added a few pieces of technology to his otherwise empty desk. The computer and printer (and all that came with them) continue to mystify him despite his colleague's insistence that it will help him to better run the school. He has been spending his free time over the summer fighting with keyboards, mice, and word processing programs. The end result is an incredibly basic understanding of computers. With any luck, Dubhan will be computer literate by the time first month's payroll comes around.

Behind his desk is a rolling chair, with another chair against the wall for visitors to make use of. The bookshelves are full of books on law around the world, ethical debate, and some of Dubhan's own handwritten volumes. A few knickknacks from his travels fill in the spaces between books.

There is a fireplace on the opposite wall that stays lit in colder months. A file cabinet leans against the wall, full of information on past and present staff and students. When not teaching or in the teacher's lounge, Dubhan can normally be found working here, as he does not take meals.

Outside the door is a small safe. Any who enter the office are required to leave their gold outside. Dubhan asks his students and colleagues to understand why he asks this.

Kenton knocked on the headmaster's door. He was determined not to be ignored or given the runaround. He'd seen movement in the room from down below when he arrived, someone was bound to be in here. "Sir Headmaster? I would speak with you, please."

"Please, enter," came a voice. Kenton squared his shoulders and opened the door.

A headless man sat at the desk behind the computer, black smoke rising from the stump of his neck. His disembodied head rested on a book to get a better view of the screen. He appeared to be having trouble with the keyboard. Waving a hand at the whole technological setup on his desk, the headmaster turned to face the young lord, the headmaster's bright green eyes meeting with the lord's own brown.

If what he had read was to be trusted, Kenton knew what he was about to say would not be well received. "Sir Headmaster, I am—"

"I know who you are," said the headmaster. There was that mystery solved, then. "My name is Herr Dubhan Connolly, there is no need to call me by title."

"Sir Herr," Kenton said stoically, bound by professionalism. "I would speak with you about my tuition costs. I know they are high, and I have not received scholarship from my King. I would like to arrange a system of work study to help offset the costs to my father."

Dubhan gazed curiously at the boy who insisted on taking on more work. "Lord Orphic, please relax. I have heard the case made by your father regarding your entry and rest assured, I would not have allowed it if you did not deserve to be here."
...for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.

"It's not about what I deserve, Sir Herr," Kenton said. "I request that I be allowed to serve the Academy in some way while I am here. I wish not to burden the Academy."

Dubhan watched Kenton carefully, waiting to see if he would break eye contact first. Kenton watched back, refusing even to waver in his resolute request. "Do you insist?"

"I do, Sir Herr." Kenton's feet and arms stayed straight and together, facing down the headmaster with every ounce of military professionalism demanded by his world.

"Very well. I shall send word to the kitchens that you will be assisting with dinner service on all non-event nights," Dubhan said, still watching the young lord. "They will expect you there immediately after your last class of the day, and at 5 pm on free days. Is this acceptable?"

"Yes, Sir Herr."

Kenton did not relax; Dubhan almost laughed. He hadn't seen such respect from a student since the earliest days of his employ. "Then you have your work study. Thank you for coming to see me."

"Thank you, Sir Herr." Kenton extended his hand. Dubhan stared back at the young lord. Handshakes were not an accepted custom among his kind.

After nearly a full minute of tense silence, Kenton finally broke. His hand lowered along with his eyes, casting a glance at the stone floor of the room. "I shall see myself to my room." The young lord turned and left the room.

Dubhan cracked a smile and turned back to the blasted computer occupying perfectly good space on his desk. This might be a good year yet, if he could just figure out how to print out a paper. He poked one of the buttons on the printer, hoping it was the right one. It made an angry beeping noise. This was clearly not his forte. No. NO. I will not be outdone by any thing that beeps. He fussed with it for a while longer, wanting to print out his staff member's rosters before heading to the staff lounge to meet them.

Sister Eleanor pushed open the door, chuckling when she saw the inside. Dubhan had left his computer on, along with everything else. She shook her head, and set her files down on the empty spot on the desk.

She woke the computer from its screensaver and set to work, connecting the printer and printing off copies of what she needed. Once that was done, she filled up her manila folder and tucked it back on her clipboard.

With a little tinkering, she made the desktop and applications a little more accessible to the poor dullahan. Frankly, she was amazed he hadn't accidentally locked the thing down completely yet.

That done, she decided to wait for Dubhan to come back. No matter how easy she made using the computer, it was probably still best if she could show him firsthand. The last thing she needed was to be pulled away from someone in the infirmary because Dubhan couldn't find the proper spreadsheets.
But in the end, our choices make us.

Dubhan returned from the staff meeting and spoke briefly with Sister Eleanor about the computer. Much to his dismay, she'd changed a few things about how it worked. Just when I'd started getting the hang of it...

"Just remember, I can come help you anytime you need it," she reminded him at the conclusion of her little lesson, picking up her briefcase.

"Yes, thank you, Sister." He waved her out of the room, thoroughly done with technology and sorely missing the days of handwritten report cards and passing out payroll entirely in cash. Gone were the simple days, it seemed.

After an uneventful night's sleep, he woke up at what he assumed was morning and kicked off the covers. Today was the last day he had to prepare before classes began. As he looked over his roster, it looked like his hard day would be B day... his fourth hour class looked less like a roster and more like an extensive guest list for a loud, unpleasant party.

With a small grumble of acknowledgement at Mathieu's announcement over the newly repaired PA intercom, he disregarded the computer and instead pulled out the logbooks he was restoring. With a student body this diverse, who knew when he would next have free time?

Dubhan was fussing with the computer again as the sun went down over the Academy walls. He had copied out pertinent information regarding rosters, a full list of students, staff, and payroll, and as much information as he could find that he was somehow able to change within the computer, lest the thing disappear from the screen as it was wont to do sometimes.

He poked a few keys on the keyboard. Something happened, but he wasn't sure what. A new window opened, displaying something called "e-mail" that Eleanor had set up for him. "Oh dear," he said, lifting his head a bit to read the screen. "Hm."

He kept poking at the keys. The email disappeared, and another window opened, flashing words and letters at him as sound played from the speakers. Dubhan nearly fell back in shock. "I've, I've done something terrible," he mumbled, giving the speakers a fearful tap. He found the volume switch, and managed to hush the infernal thing. With a few more stabs at the keyboard, the screen changed back to the stock image of a dog that was his desktop background.

With an angry sigh, Dubhan fell forward onto the desk, his neck flush with the keyboard. His head stared at the screen, utterly fed up with the thing. At least he'd copied everything out of it. Maybe he could get Sister to come help him again later...

No! To do that would be to admit defeat to this infernal, glowing, screeching, thing. He'd figure it out sooner or later... "I... refuse... to be... outdone... by anything... that BEEPS," Dubhan said stubbornly, stabbing at the keyboard.

By the time Izromos made it to Herr Connolly's room he wasn't dripping wet, yet his clothes still hung to his body. It had taken him a bit to find the Headmasters room, even though there were nameplates on each door. He blamed his lack of experience in reading English. But, now, here he stood. Lifting up a hand he knocked and then waited for the man to allow him to enter.

Dubhan fought the urge to incinerate his computer. It wasn't going well, nor would it for many a day. He sensed he'd be taking computer lessons from Sister for months if he was ever to be fluent in technology.

He heard a knock at the door. "Enter," he said, poking at the button that turned the monitor off. What a disaster. He ought to refuse to use the damn thing and just continue on with his inkwells and handwriting for the rest of eternity. It would certainly be easier, at this point...

Hearing the response, the wet Izromos opened the door. The moment the door was open, he bowed to the man. "Good evening sir," he said in his thick accent as he raised himself up. Feeling his bow and quiver shift he quickly adjusted their placement on his shoulder. "I have come to request leave from my position for the evening." Some part of him felt that if he was relieved from his post that he should go eat, yet he knew that he was much more tired than hungry.

"Sir Amnicolo, you need no one's permission to leave your post at the end of your shift," Dubhan said, waving his hand in a 'yes' motion to Izromos. "Our opening banquet is tonight, I encourage you to attend. The staff table will always have a place for you."

He rubbed the back of his neck. He probably ought to attend as well... but first, he ought to sort out whatever damage he had caused here. "I'll be heading there myself shortly. But, in any case. You are free to do as you will," Dubhan clarified. "Thank you."

Hearing that he could be released from his post, and that whenever his shift was over he was free to leave, Izromos felt slightly happy. He wasn't so used having that freedom. As the Herr continued to speak, he mentioned that Izromos was invited to the banquet. Such a kind gesture should not be passed by, he thought. Sleep can wait.

"Thank you sir," Izromos said as he bowed his head. "Excuse me," he said as he turned, closing the door behind him.

A banquet? With a smile faintly on his lips, Izromos headed down the hall to his dorm.

Dubhan beamed as Izromos left the room. He had a good feeling about the staff this year, not at all like the unease he felt upon hiring Astrid. Hopefully, his vetting process had become tight enough that such outrageous staffers could no longer slip through.

He turned back to his computer, determined to strike a blow in his favor against this "e-mail." Dubhan gave a sigh, poking at the keyboard again. Let's teach this old dog some new tricks, then.

He'd lost track of time. Dubhan let the evening get away from him, and his handheld buzzed. He jumped as Sister's voice came through.

A fight? Lovely. The year had officially started, then. He stood up, stretched, and left for the dining hall.

Dubhan shouldered open the door to his office, pulling Thomas in after him and hoping Izromos was not far behind with Kenton and Maeza. Ideally, he could speak with the staff first... then, he could send the two fae off to their sentences right away.

"You will sit quietly with me for the duration of the evening," Dubhan ordered. "This is your punishment."

"Don't I get to clean up?" Thomas spat.

"When Sister arrives I will have her take a look at you," Dubhan said. "You will be released tomorrow morning before classes so that you may return to your room, fetch your things, and go to class."

Thomas exhaled angrily through his nose. "I trust I'm not the only one getting punished?"

"That is not your decision." Dubhan pulled up a chair for Thomas, and sat back in his own desk chair. "Sit. Wait. Say nothing."

Thomas leaned defiantly backwards in his chair, resting his ankle on his knee. "Fine."

"Silence."

Dubhan folded his hands over his head, awaiting the arrival of the rest.

Sister Eleanor gently knocked on the door, fearing what awaited her and her colleagues on the other side of it.

"Enter."

She pushed it open, coming face to face with Herr Dubhan.

"Herr, please let me—"

Dubhan raised a hand to silence her. "Sister, I have been at this school for over a thousand years," he said. "This is far and away not the worst fight any of us have seen in the dining hall. But we must all work to ensure that order remains within these walls. Do not make a fool of me, of yourself, of your colleagues, of your school. Am I clear?"

"Yes, Herr."

Dubhan waved to Thomas. "Make sure he's all right, if you please."

Eleanor nodded, and set to work cleaning the prince's cut and washing the spice out of his skin and hair. It was slow going, and the prince was far from cooperative. Slowly and steadily, she managed to clean up the prince and begin work on closing up the cut on his cheek.

Mathieu was next into Herr's office, his hair still clumping together from the water Sister had thrown on him.

"Dubhan?" he asked uncertainly, knocking on the open door.

"Monsieur. I will be sending Lord Orphic to aid you with your library as soon as he's through with me and cleaned up," Dubhan said curtly. "Wash up and await him there. He will be tasked with organizing as many shelves as you deem him capable of."

Mathieu's eyes trained on the ground as he listened. "All right."

"Monsieur, do not let this happen again," Dubhan sighed. "I know we have all been sorely needing release since last winter, but this is not the way to do it."

"I, I know," Mathieu said, cowed. "I'm sorry."

"Go now. He'll be along shortly."

Mathieu nodded to Dubhan, then to Sister, and made his way back out to the library.

Rob quietly knocked on Dubhan's door as he entered. This isn't going to be pretty...I should have started packing my bags because I'm about to lose my job, he thought as he stood there, stiff as a board, in front of Herr Dubhan. He gave him a formal bow, absent of his usual flourishes, and then stood straight again. "Herr, I apologize for my poor conduct in the dining hall. It was unprofessional and childish of me and I can offer you no excuse as to why I acted in such a manner."
