The student's lounge is on the ground floor, beneath the staff lounge. It is a cozy room full of assorted tables, chairs, and windows. The wall of windows to the south looks out on the front lawns of the Academy, with a few smaller windows on the north side looking out at the lake.

Brunch is served in the lounge to all students on weekends. The comfortable chairs are constantly being rearranged as students form study groups, go off on their own, or (occasionally) build pillow forts. With the staff lounge right upstairs, it's best not to make much noise lest the staff come down and berate troublemakers.

Electrical outlets are never too far for technologically inclined students. A few bookshelves containing copies of oft-used textbooks lean against the east wall, alongside a few lockers of blankets and wood for the fireplace.

The lounge is never locked, and students are free to come and go as they please.

Princess Aurelie C. Neustria

of Mount Aetherea

Having the freedom to walk around without an escort was a privilege the Princess of Mt. Aetherea was still unused to. True, she had spent the majority of her childhood running away from her attendants and escorts, but here, on Academy grounds, she was free to roam as she pleased without putting anyone in trouble.

Her explorations had lead her to the student lounge where she would no doubt meet some of her fellow students. She had been curious of the kind of people she would meet, having only heard of them from books or the few members of the Court that had studied abroad. Of course, they had all given her some sort of advice ("Do not court a married man." "Beware of their celebrations. They oft serve poisoned beverage!"), but hearing things was one thing and living them was another.

Unfortunately, Aurelie found the lounge empty though she couldn't really blame anyone, but her parents' eagerness to send her here. She did arrive rather early and it wasn't as though everyone was as keen to explore the world as she was. However, since she was here already, it wouldn't hurt to browse around.

She took in the bookshelves, but didn't linger. Classes had not started yet so she saw no point in spending time with textbooks while she still had so much to see. Speaking of which, she caught sight of a few students out by the lake. Go figure. Who would want to stay indoors on such a fine day? Perhaps she should go join them.

As she made to leave, the power outlets scattered accross the room caught her attention. Electricity as a source of energy was something her people were still unfamiliar with so she could not resist the urge to take a closer look. Unfortunately, the socket was pretty well sealed and she could not see any of the wiring she had heard so much about from the Court's head researcher.

Looking left and right for a solution, her eyes finally landed on the fireplace's poker, hung neatly on its rack next to the tongs, a shovel, and a broom. The thing was made quite sturdily with a black matte finish and was just exactly what she needed to pry open the socket.

Carefully to avoid damaging the wall more than necessary, she wedged the pointed tip between the outlet and the wall and nudged the thing open. It gave in without much resistance and the plastic frame flopped onto the floor, revealing a handful of electric wires that Aurelie promptly started fiddling with.

Kenton entered the student lounge, finding it more or less quiet. There was a blonde girl sitting on the floor, fiddling with something. Hm. It wasn't anything with which he was familiar. She looked like another student. But what on earth was she doing? The wires looked live, one of them even sparked. He folded up his map. He could find the classrooms later on.

"What are you doing, madam?" he asked directly, trying to position himself in her line of sight so as not to startle her. "That looks informative but dangerous. Please be careful not to injure yourself."

He looked out the windows of the lounge, counting two students walking up through the grounds to the residence halls. The midmorning sun was still beating down on the arriving students, though there still didn't seem to be enough to call this place a school. His hand rested on his pouch of water out of habit, and he fiddled restlessly with the cork as he did when he was fighting off boredom.

"Forgive my intrusion. I am Lord Kenton Pelagius," he said, offering her a deep bow. "I thought I might explore the campus before the rest of the students arrive. Might the same be said about you?"

Movement in her peripheral vision caught Aurelie's attention, but she ignored it to better focus on these peculiar sparkling things. She had noticed that the wires were of different colors and had yet to figure out why. She did not have the opportunity to continue on that train of thought because whatever had been in her peripheral vision had moved to stand directly in her line of sight and had even started talking to her. She stopped twirling the wires between her fingers to observe the finely dressed young man.

She noted the pointed ears adorned with a golden ring and the scar above his left eye which gave him a rather menacing air. However, the man had politely let his presence be known before inquiring about her intentions and had even introduced himself to her. Basic etiquette dictated that she should return the favor so she got up as she had been told to do when addressing another person before introducing herself.

"Good day! I am Princess Aurelie of Mount Aetherea," she answered while performing a quick curtsy, the only one that she knew well enough to pull off spontaneously without tripping. "I had discovered these sockets used to power up electronic devices, things my homeland do not possess and I simply could not resist the chance of getting a closer look. My people use pure energy instead of electricity so I'm afraid our knowledge is quite limited on that subject."

Her gaze landed on what appeared to be a piece of paper. "I'm not in trouble already, am I?" she asked with a worried frown. She had heard that some school had disciplinary committees and she couldn't exactly tell Lord Kenton's age by his appearance alone especially since she was told that some races do not age the way her people did.

"Hm? Oh, no," said Kenton, replacing his map of the school in the breast pocket of his jacket. He watched the princess get up and curtsy, inclining his head in acknowledgment. "I do not work for the school." This was not entirely true, but how to phrase that particular part of his world? "I am here as a student, though I intend to work off my tuition in the school kitchens every night for dinner service," he clarified.

He peered curiously at the wires. "I know I do not look it at first glance, but my people, the Tidal Fairies, reside on an island in the Atlantic," he said, flapping his small, dragonfly-esque wings to illustrate his point. "We do not have... whatever that is. Electricity."

Kenton pulled up a chair beneath the sunny windows, inviting the princess to sit as well. "If it pleases you, Madam Princess," he said, nodding to the chair. They were quite comfortable. Definitely softer than what they had in the military barracks at home. "May I ask you where you are from?" he asked. "I am having a hard time placing your accent."

"I cannot wait for dinner time then," she smiled back pleasantly. She couldn't wait to get to taste meals from different culture. The recipe book she had borrowed from a distant aunt sure had looked much more colorful than her homeland's moss-based food though some of them were colorful enough to make her wonder if it wasn't actually another form of the tinted water her people used to build their houses. However, that could wait since Lord Kenton had mentioned Tidal Fairies and those wings!

Aurelie followed Lord Kenton to the a seat by a window all the while staring at the transparent appendages before she noted how bright sun was outside. Fortunately, the temperature was kept at a manageable degree by the school's ventilation system.

"My people, Spellweavers, speak French as our official language since it was and still is the most used diplomatic language when it comes to treaties. However, since English is the most spoken language, my title required me to learn it as well, but I started a bit late," she explained, omitting the part that it was around that time that she had learned how to shift into energy and escape her teachers.

"Ironically enough, we do not live near France at all. In fact, we are Santa Claus' neighbors from above since we live above the arctic ocean though I highly doubt he knows of our presence since our home cannot be seen by eye alone," she added, completely serious. The princess just hoped that her nanny was still keeping an eye on the skies around Aetherea for any horizontally challenged old man dressed in red and flying a sleigh as she had promised. "What about you, Lord Pelagius? Where did you learn to cook? I didn't know that someone of the nobility were required to learn such basic chores."

Kenton listened intently as the princess spoke, nodding. "You speak English very well," he said. "I am fortunate in that it is my mother tongue. I cannot imagine having to learn for years in an establishment that did not operate in my native language."

Kenton relaxed a bit, loosening the cuffs on his jacket sleeves. It was rather nice, not to have to be one hundred per cent on form every single minute of every day. It was a welcome change from the barracks, no matter how much he missed them. "Who is Santa Claus?" he asked seriously. "I have heard tell of him in my adventures around the Americas and Europe, but I have no idea who is is. Is it true he fills socks with presents once a year?"

He cracked a small smile, and fluttered his wings again since she seemed to be so intrigued by them. They made a quiet rattling noise as they brushed against the chair back. "I am nobility in name only. My father is the Lord Pelagius, and he oversees the military in Crescent Tide. Or, at least, he did until the war ended." He winked with his left eye. "I got lucky. My father lost his wings and nearly his whole arm. I hope to take his place when I return, if the prince does not do so for me."

Aurelie saw the tension seep out of the Tidal Fairy and allowed herself to relax as well. She was more than glad to give her back and shoulder a little rest. Although she did not slouch, she could swear that her mother must have broken her back to be able to remain in such an upright posture effortlessly.

"I'm not exactly sure either, but he is a celebrity in the western world and everyone talks about him during the beginning of winter. They say Santa Claus and his elves make toys for children all over the world, but only if they behaved themselves during the year so I guess that must explain why I've never gotten any," she ended in a mumble, eyes locked onto the fluttering of his wings, watching the light dance across them before an epiphany hit her. "Or he may have had trouble reaching the castle I lived in..."

Note to self: write home to have have a fireplace and chimney installed outside of the palace's protective dome and send Santa the exact address and directions to Aetherea,
she mentally recited.

"But tell me about your people! What is this war you speak of?" Worry could be felt in her voice as she recalled the definition of the word. "My people have lived in isolation and have avoided conflicts for generations. The latest civil war had happened over 5 centuries ago and few recall the details, but we have opened ourselves to the rest of the world and I fear that a day will come when my people will have to take arms."

Kenton folded his wings against his back, and his hands in his lap. "I have never known elves that made toys... most elves I meet make weapons and magic, not toys." He now felt slightly hurt; if this story was true he should like to believe that he'd have gotten at least one present in his obedient life.

He frowned as she asked about the war. "The war ended this past spring, between my people and the dragons of China," he explained. "We have always been at odds. My people control the waves and the tide, while the Chinese dragons guide the weather around the world. We came into conflict over a typhoon that no one wished to claim responsibility for, despite the fact that my kind cannot control wind."

Kenton chewed his tongue for a moment. The war was over, all the gory details were bound to be public knowledge at this point. "Our Queen was killed in the earliest days of the war, and our King remarried my aunt. My father and I moved from our local militia in the Pacific out to the Atlantic, where the King and the major forces of the military reside. My father was taken as a prisoner of war three years ago, and I filled his role until the conclusion of the war in spring. We all bear scars, those of us that fought." He inclined his head to Aurelie. "War is an unwelcome fate I would not wish on anyone, Madam Princess, but civil war is a particularly grievous evil. I hope such atrocities never visit your lands."

Christopher, proudly yet nonchalantly, waltzed into the lounge. It was so well lit that it nearly gave him a headache. He noticed a blonde girl and a gentleman with a scar on his face. He doesn't look so tough... I could take him. He turned his attention toward the girl once more. She's a hot piece of.. Wait... Can't think like that... Eh, what the hell. I might as well talk to them both.
Chris approached them bravely, but with caution. Their scents were new to them.
He raised his hand as a gestural greeting, "I'm Chris! Chris London! What's up?"

Kenton turned at the voice, and nearly toppled backward in shock. "Greetings, Sir," he said, trying not to allow his shock to get the better of him. "I am Lord Kenton Pelagius of Crescent Tide, and this is Princess Aurelie of Mount Aetherea."

He looked the newcomer up and down. "Please forgive my forwardness, but what war has scarred you so colorfully and plentifully?" he asked, nodding to the marks all over Chris's arms. They were unlike his own scars, and even had patterns that made no sense to Kenton's eye. "I have never seen such scars in my life."

Chris couldn't help but laugh. Maybe this mook ain't so bad. He stretched out his arms, flipped them around and smiled, "Nah, man. These are tattoos. It's art. They take a sharp needle and poke ink into your skin at 30000 RPM. They sting like a sun burn, but I love 'em. In fact I can't get enough of them!"

He continued to remember Kenton's scent and looked straight into his eyes, "It's nice to meet you, Ken. You're the first guy I've met that wasn't a wolf like me. Now, I've told you about my marks, so it's only polite if you tell me about your marks if you don't mind."

Kenton stood up, and bowed to Christopher. Though he did not know why, Christopher seemed of a higher rank than he. He pulled up a chair for Christopher to sit in, and inclined his head to his inked fellow. "Art?" How peculiar. It certainly sounded painful and unpleasant... why on earth would anyone choose to be stabbed so many times? "How and why does one acquire such art?"

Still trying to wrap his head around the concept of 'tattoos,' he shook his head and tried to focus. He remained standing in deference to the other two. "As I was explaining to Madam Princess, my scars come from the past eight years my people have spent at war. I spent three of them leading the charge," he explained. He tapped his eye, then his left shoulder and right hip. "Dragon claws. I nearly lost my arm."

He cast a glance at Aurelie. "But perhaps we should not speak of such things in front of Madam Princess. I am sure she does not wish to hear of all our battle wounds."

Ferin entered the lounge, already swearing in his native language about it being so searing hot this time of year. Why oh why his father insisted he come to this blasted school again, Ferin had no clue. Only that it had to do with that runt from the other kingdom. He looked around, and decided to take a seat, folding his hands together and muttering. One hand was of flesh and blood, the other was of clear ice. His arm had been seared off during the Winter Ball, and he wanted to get back at those responsible for that debacle. However, they were gone, and the school still stood. He hadn't cared about the rest of the students, only that he was stuck in a warzone and had to survive. If he had taken out someone in the process attacking other students, well, that was by pure chance, and not a courtesy to anyone else.

His eyes travelled around the lounge, taking in the scene. Ugh, more humans. Why did he have to be stuck with humans again? They stank and were repulsive. He hadn't caught sight of his new roommate yet, and he thought it was for the better. He thought it was hilarious that he had a room all to himself last year, but this one? No, he was stuck with someone, and he despised having his privacy invaded. Well, he hoped they enjoyed the frigid cold of the room. He refused to raise the room above what he saw was comfortable, and he didn't see his viewpoint as changing anytime soon.

Chris laughed when Kenton bowed to him, "Man, don't worry about formalities with me. Thanks for the chair," he said as he sat down.
He looked at Kenton up and down and smirked, "You seem like a fierce fighter. That would do you well in the wolf pack if you actually were a wolf," he said chuckling. He looked back at the other princess whom he did find quite attractive, "Probably ain't the best conversation to have in front of a woman."
All of a sudden, his nose picked up the scent of a newcomer. He smelled like straight-up salt water and rock. He turned around to see a boy with silver hair and a look on his face that didn't sit right with him. Still, mama always said, "Kill them with kindness and if that don't work, bite a hole in their neck."
Oh Mama. I'm gonna miss you.
Chris called out to the new guy in the room, "Ey! Why don't you be social? I'm Chris!"
