The law and judgment classroom is simple and functional. There are twelve seats on each side of the room in neat rows of three, all of which swivel to face the inner aisle for debates. Up front, there is a podium on which Dubhan rests his notes, books, class lesson plan, and (occasionally) head. A rolling blackboard is kept at the back of the class along with a few nubs of chalk. There is also a long wooden oar handle that Dubhan uses as a pointer.

Behind the podium is a setup for mock trials that accommodates most of the customs set forth by humans, fairies, and other magical folk. An old gavel is kept under the podium, along with several holy books upon which the "witnesses" swear under oath if the situation commands.

Just outside the classroom is a shelf full of cubbyholes. Students are strongly, strictly, imploringly encouraged to leave any and all gold effects outside the room. The professor has a mortal fear of gold, and wishes his classroom to be free of such a distraction.

A sign on the door reads:

All students are welcome into my classroom and office once their gold is left outside.

The classroom was exactly as Dubhan had left it. Most of the burn damage was gone, but a bit remained on the walls and the edges of the railing. It was but a minor inconvenience, and certainly not a distracting one.

He set his case down behind the bench and rolled his blackboard up to the front of the room. His roster consisted of one for this advanced placement class, and Dubhan had seen hide nor hair of his charge all weekend.

Dubhan sat down at the bench, pulling out a book and waiting for the Prince of Brightenvale to arrive. I hope he's eaten. I will not go easy.

Sherlock lingered in the hallway; his morning had been uneventful, but he was certain that it was going to take a more interesting turn when he entered the classroom. Law and judgment had been among his favorite classes in years passed, but since the battle last year his relationship with the teacher and new headmaster was strained at best. He’d skipped breakfast and ducked out of his room early that morning, taking a stroll along the new lake before he headed in for his advanced placement class, wondering if there would even be any other students to take the heat off of him. Most likely not.
He finally slipped into the classroom and swiftly made his way to the center front of the seats, plopping his bag down and turning to his teacher, briefly uncertain how to greet him. Would the usual nod do? No, he was likely going to be alone with the man all morning, perhaps a bit more. “Good morning, Herr.”
[[sorry about the lack of format! again, lack of my actual computer is making this more difficult.]]

Dubhan stood up as Sherlock entered. "Prince," he said, bowing his torso to the boy. If nothing else, at least he wouldn't be bored in this hour.

"Well, then. We're all present, let us begin." Dubhan tapped the board, on which was written his usual blithering for the younger years. "You know the usual. Open office, discussion based, grading based on how you argue."

He rolled the board off to the side, allowing him to face Sherlock directly. "This is advanced placement, and your final year. Clearly, we do not need to cover all of that once again, so we will be covering less material about the letter of the law and more about applied ethics. This attempts to deal with specific realms of action and to craft criteria for discussing issues that might arise within those realms."

Dubhan made a conscious effort to keep his body language balanced and squared, letting his arms hang at his sides rather than pointing at nothing with his oar handle. He never did anything truly important on the first day of class. It was more reserved for laying down rules, taking questions, ensuring all students knew precisely what to expect. There was no mystery in his classroom for Sherlock. Not anymore.

"I will spare you the agony of having to sit here for an entire empty class, listening to my opening lecture yet another time. Have you any questions before I turn you loose?"

Sherlock nodded his way through the introductions- it was nothing he had not heard before, having taken law and judgment classes with his headless instructor each year. He had to admit a certain fondness for the open door policy that his teacher held, although he was certain the man must be tired of his often all too uncomfortable questions by now, particularly with the nasty habits of lying and arguably also manipulation he had slipped into last year. Applied ethics. How interesting this must be, I hope he doesn’t expect much personal input. After all, he was able to easily apply ethical codes he had learned, the laws and what schools of thought they were based upon, but his own morals presented somewhat of a perplexing flexibility that he was uncertain would be welcome in the classroom.

Sherlock found himself glad for his teachers sensibility in not repeating the usual opening speech for his one student, but questions did still linger from the year prior. “Yes. Will we be viewing morals subjectively then? For all intents and purposes, I cannot imagine you believe an objective view on morality is something I am suited to.” Although, it would not be the first time he had failed to meet the teachers ethical expectations, he supposed. Herr Connolly had never struck him as overly optimistic, surely he had come to realize his student was no moral man by now.

Dubhan stood in silence for a moment before responding. He would not soon forget the heated argument he'd had with Sherlock the previous year, and he felt sure that the prince still remembered it as well.

"Applied ethics is subjective, yes," he said evenly. "And our examination of such topics will be subjective, but my rule applies." He set his head down on his podium, trying to imagine what the coming classes would look like. Although largely empty, this hour was hardly shaping up to be his easiest.

"In this room, you are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled only to what you can argue for." Dubhan rapped his knuckles against his podium. This was a line he repeated and explained for every incoming class, that they might internalize it. This was especially important for his advanced placement courses, where every class was a debate and every student was on their own against Dubhan's most hellish devil's advocating.

He waved to the door. "If that is all, you're dismissed for the morning."

Dubhan sat back at his seat, updating his student files. He'd received some news over the morning that was not entirely welcome, and needed to log it as best he could.

Mr. Ashe Harrison: Ashe is no longer on the grounds. He has vanished from the Academy and I do not know why. Given his failure to attend class this morning, I have sent word with Aidan to town that we are in dire need to another fighting teacher. My understanding is that there is someone in my office who needs to speak with me forthwith on the topic.

Princess Galaxy Scherenchella: Galaxy was recalled to her home planet not long ago. I know not why, but I think it to do with her kind's civil war. She is out of my jurisdiction, so we may never know precisely what happened to her. Honestly, though, with all the other students here, I cannot be made to care.

Princess Saga Arnardottir: Saga has vanished from the grounds. I think she found it too warm here. Far be it from me to understand the finer points of dwarven politics, but I understand she was rather looking forward to seeing the dwarven baobab that Nurse Ivy of last year had in her infirmary. Since Sister Eleanor chopped it down and disposed of it on her hiring, Saga may have taken this as an affront.

Princes Gearvin and Ferin: I am rather disappointed to see these boys go so quickly after being two of our returning students. I do not think their departure has anything to do with the events of last year—after all, they stuck it out the rest of last year and even made the effort to return. Perhaps it has to do with the lingering remnants of summer on the grounds? They know our winters, though, and perhaps this has worried them too much to bear.

Prince Aenon Brookson: Another alien gone from our school. Prince Cosmo must be lonely. I can only assume this is due to the decided lack of water and overabundance of sunlight that this earth provided our grounds. He has not died... not that I can see.

That done, Dubhan stood up. Let's see if this new professor will be worth our time.
